My “deafening” was noticed when I was 58 by a friend. We were attending a seminar with about 500 people. I missed so much of the crowd interaction with the speaker and it never occurred to me perhaps I had a hearing problem. When I walked into the hotel room we were sharing, my friend asked me if I liked the music she was playing, I couldn’t even hear it. I was shocked though I should not have been considering how much of the seminar I had missed. Denial is a potent emotion. But at the same time, I never even considered I would ever have a hearing problem. She encouraged me to have my hearing checked.I got tested for hearing loss and received hearing aids from a different organization. They worked, but I was not really happy with them or the people who ran the business. I will say the most important thing I did learn from them was that hearing loss is not like regular vision loss which gets corrected by glasses. Hearing goes through the brain and is frequency dependent. Hence, it is the loss of the frequencies that affect the hearing quality. The other important thing I learned was that losing the ability to hear frequencies can lead to dementia and the more frequencies you lose, the more risk you are at. This really scared me.When Park Place Hearing Center took over the other facility, it was like finding a doctor & an office you just love and trust. They presented me with the latest technology in hearing devices and I said to myself, “now is the time to upgrade” and I invested in them. I use the term invested because investing is what I was doing. I was investing in preserving the hearing I had and doing my best to stop further loss. These hearing devices made a huge difference in the quality of my hearing.I strongly recommend Park Place Hearing with Dennis Tobin and Laura Dundas. They work with you to fit you with the right hearing devices that also fit your pocketbook. Their supportive environment and follow-up appointments to check & clean the hearing aids is a very important service that they offer. This ensures the hearing aids continue to be in good working order.Having a yearly hearing test is also important as well and if there is a change, your aids can be adjusted. I have been pleasantly surprised that some of my ability to distinguish words has actually improved. But the very best of all is that with the hearing aids I chose, everything is online, i.e., so any adjustments are made right there in their office. This makes excellent use of your time as well as keeping your hearing devices with any updates which keeps them in tip-top working order. It is just like updating your computer.If you suspect you might have a hearing loss, it is truly better to know and to what degree that loss is. It will be up to you whether you move forward to purchase aids or decide not to. This is a no pressure organization, which is focused on giving you the facts so you can make the best decision for you.
