It was Thanksgiving time in 2008 and our tax practice was drowning….more red ink than black and not sure why. My revenues were down and expenses were rising. I was depressed and trying to figure out what to do….everything I seemed to try just wasn’t working. Advertising, marketing, etc wasn’t doing what I wanted. My staff & I were grinding it out to no avail!! Working longer hours and not making much headway in growing the practice.Then an answered prayer seemed to fall into my lap from a letter I received from a CPA who was espousing the virtues of a company I remembered hearing about in 2003 at a tax meeting I attended. The phone call to the number listed on the letter was as enlightening as the letter, only more so. I spoke with Ben, who proceeded to tell me about a technology that Sterling teaches that has helped many companies in my condition turn around. He sent me a package with brochures, magazines, and a video. During follow-up phone calls he convinced me to give it a try. Although I did not have the funds I financed a Sterling SPEEDO visit in early February of 2009 & paid for a visit to Glendale for the Executive training course for both my wife & I in the summer after tax season.It would be fair to say that the SPEEDO was a disaster….not because of the consultants that conducted it but due to my staff & I not knowing what to expect. Additionally, everything was backwards….SPEEDO should have come in the summer after our training. Much upset was caused, which I have later come to realize was because of some of the type of personnel I had on staff (Coverts; Defiant-Negative; and Wholly Shiftless). These personnel did everything in their power to not only sabotage the SPEEDO but also my practice….which is why I was drowning in red ink!But we persevered….and stuck with the program. We were a mess, literally & I was heading into a dark place emotionally. I discovered with the help of my wonderful consultant, Ahuda, who the problem children were & what actions I needed to take to deal with them.Occasional visits to Sterling HQ in Glendale to visit with Ahuda and take additional training have also been enlightening. Private consulting sessions with Dan have uncovered issues unbeknownst to me which have helped me deal with getting my business & personal life on track.During a recent visit to Glendale in May of 2015 to attend the CPA/EA summit, Ahuda suggested an office visit…sort of a mini SPEEDO. While apprehensive due to the previous SPEEDO, I agreed.I must say, I was not sure how it was going to go based on our previous SPEEDO; however, I can honestly say that the SPEEDO consultant, Jeanne Bush, was wonderful. She made the learning so natural & easy that everyone who attended raved about how much more they understood the technology…evidently, I am not a good teacher of the technology. She was able to help me implement a bonus system, straighten out staff, help me to recognize not only the productive staff but the few remaining that needed to be excised.I would highly recommend that anyone who is contemplating a SPEEDO or an office visit ask for Jeanne…she is wonderful! You will get a wealth of knowledge that can help your business take-off.Today we run what I would classify as a highly successful tax, small business, and financial services company. Since finding Sterling our revenues have been on an uptrend, averaging 7% per year and our expenses are only growing at 1%. Since the SPEEDO, we have been consistently growing the practice while further reducing expenses enabling the practice to fly past the $1M mark.My stress levels are down, my practice is flourishing, my staff is happy with the games we are implementing. My only regret is that it took me so long to fully commit to implementing the technology.
