Founder of the Missionary Society of St. Vincent De Paul and the Sisters of CharityMr. Yun was born in 1581 in a small village in Gasgau, Southwest France. His parents are farmers, and they have six children, among whom Yun Xianxing is the third. Even as a child he had shown great kindness to the poor.Yunxian was intelligent since he was a child, and his father sent him to school. After graduating from Dulushi University, he studied theology. He was promoted to a priest in 1600.Yunxian has experienced various adversities since he was a child. When he was preaching in various places, he had contact with many suffering people, and he had a very deep understanding of the hardships of life, which further strengthened his determination to start charity.Yun first gathered a group of people who were enthusiastic about missionary work and went to small towns and villages to preach the Gospel. This new religious order, called the Missionaries, grew rapidly. Since 1633, the main institute of the congregation was established on the former site of St. Lazarus convent, so most people call this congregation Lazarus Congregation or Yunxian Congregation.Members of the Missionary Society dedicate themselves to missionary work, and their main tasks are to preach to the countryside, persuade the idiots in the village, and cultivate outstanding talents in the clergy to serve as the basis for missionary work abroad. The businesses they set up and their work areas spread all over the world. Before Mr. Sheng Yun, there were as many as twenty-five branches of the Mission Society.In addition to founding the Missionary Association, Yunxian also devoted himself to various works of mourning. He and St. Louis jointly founded a convent for the care of the sick, the Sisters of Charity. He also called on the Womens Organization of Charity in Paris to raise donations and help promote various charitable causes.Yunxian built many hospitals and relief institutions in various places to take in orphans, abandoned babies, the poor and helpless old people, depraved women, criminals serving hard labor in prisons, the sick, the disabled and beggars. At that time, the relief agencies of France and Austria competed to hire saints as chairmen. He is truly the father of modern international relief agencies.Yunxian made a detailed plan for the spiritual karma, which is specially designed for those who are preparing to receive the divine offering, or those who intend to make a general confession. He also gave sermons on spiritual advancement for the clergy to strengthen their holiness.In the eyes of ordinary people, it seems impossible for one person to set up and manage these many complicated and arduous undertakings. However, Yun Xian was able to manage all his affairs by himself, and he managed all the businesses with good results, which is a miracle.When the Loren war broke out, Yun first raised donations to help the victims on a large scale. He sent missionaries to Poland, Ireland, Scotland and other places to preach. He redeemed twelve hundred slaves in North Africa.Yun Xian was busy with various affairs all day long, but his soul was always in close union with God. He encountered numerous setbacks, failures, slanders, and blows throughout his life, but he always remained calm, patient, and optimistic. No matter what he does, he has only one basic goal: may God be glorified in all things.Yun Xian was originally a violent person. However, with the help of Gods grace and personal efforts, he often controlled his emotions, practiced the virtues of patience and love for others, and became a kind and benevolent saint.Yunxian regards the virtue of humility as the basic virtue of the sending envoys. He repeatedly taught his friars to practice the virtue of humility. He often said: As far as possible, a person must not talk about his own achievements, so as not to generate pride and self-love. He also said: The main purpose of the Missionary Society is to instill religious knowledge into the ignorant, to persuade the ignorant. Sinners repent and repent, and plant the spirit of gospel love, kindness, humility, and simplicity in the hearts of every church member.”In his old age, Yun Xian often suffered from serious illnesses and suffered terribly. He died peacefully on September 27, 1660, at the age of eighty.This peasant priest was canonized in 1737. Pope Leo XIII also made the saint the patron saint of charity.
