Very nice rooms, clean. Contrary to other comments, we didn’t find the room loud at all, even if our room was on the intersection. The staff is super nice, there is an underground free parking, and the coffee/tea/water station was very convenient. 10 min walk from the wharf, but surrounded by nice restaurants (dinner, acai bowl, sandwichs, ice cream…). Would come back again!

Rooms are fine. A little dated but clean and comfortable. Well equipped and has a good tea and coffee station in the reception. The location is very loud due to being on a busy junction overlooking two petrol stations.We had a very noisy neighbour on the first night but the staff at reception sorted it promptly.

This place is a joke. I wouldnt reccomend to anyone. Building is old and plumbing is faulty. There was a leak and they tried to blame us. All we did was take a shower. Worst worst worst motel experience I ever had. The coffee was so gross too. Only plus to this place was its location. Id give zero stars if i could. Dont go here.

Recent renovations, combined with a very central location in downtown Monterey, make this place a very good value. Only 10 minutes to walk to Fisherman’s Wharf, and another 20 min or so from there to Cannery Row and the aquarium. There is a Trader Joe’s about 5 minutes away if you want some groceries. There’s a refrigerator in the room but not a microwave, so you need to go to the lobby to heat things up. Despite being located on a busy intersection, the traffic noise wasn’t too bad. The staff at the desk are awesome, and the coffee in the lobby was surprisingly good (strong enough). The outdoor parking is quite convenient to the rooms, and there is also indoor parking available. There seems to be a fire hall nearby, as we heard fire trucks heading out with sirens blaring several times a day, probably the only bad thing I can say about the place. The tap water in Monterey is horrible tasting, one of the worst I’ve ever encountered (including Mexico), but there is a water filtration unit in the lobby that provides good tasting water.

Easy parking, well located, right next to the gas station so you can fuel up the next day. Room big and well equipped, comfortable bed. Generous with the coffee, as well as a machine in the room there’s a 24-hour coffee service in the lobby to keep you topped up. Only issue is, the curtains don’t draw all the way across because they’d cover the heater. As a result you’re only screened from the outside by a net curtain, and under certain light conditions people might be able to see in. But apart from that, it’s perfectly good and only a short walk from the waterfront.

Amazing hotel at Monterey! The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the coffee provided in the main check-in area is delicious. The rooms are clean with lots of space. There is a pool provided and lots of parking. The prices are very affordable so be sure to stay here if you have the opportunity!

Have stayed here before during and after the pandemic. Like most Hotels they suffered but survived. That alone speaks to their quality & grit; but have to give extra credit for the improvements they did with their time & money during the off time that have fully paid off.You can tell the hotel guests’ comfort actually means something to this long time establishment.Just blocks away to great restaurants and shopping makes this a safe great value with upgrades that will keep me coming back !Thanks Stevenson of Monterey !

I stayed here with my girlfriend in February for 1 night. Overall we enjoyed our stay. The best thing about The Stevenson is the location, as you can walk to central Monterey in about 5 minutes. The room was decent with a comfortable bed, loads of USB sockets and power outlets, a modern Samsung TV, plus a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The shower was really good, with plenty of hot water and the bathroom looked like it had been refurbed recently. Staff were friendly. Would recommend.

Remodeled rooms still dingy office and outside. There seems some conflict if its pet friendly reservations says yes $50 per day is too much but clerk waived 2nd day charge but at checki in I was told twice no pets are allowed no relief area and no waste bags even the hotel rules paper says $250 extra charge if you bring a pet. But inspite room clean and quiet and a good locatiom.

One of the best located hotels in the area. Really close to the strip and everything is within walking distance.Theres a parking garage and some spots in the main parking area.The rooms were clean and thankfully the bathrooms were updated and clean as well. The bed is a bit uncomfortable and the price per night is a bit pricey.

If you are looking for a luxury 5-star hotel this is not your place. However, if you want friendly staff, well stocked breakfast, comfortable rooms, and affordable rates; this is your place! The beds are very soft and the rooms are clean. This is a historical building so expect to see a few cracks and crannies in the wall. The bathrooms are stocked with your usual necessities and the towels are comfortable. The walk to local conveniences are fairly close. This includes a Trader Joes and Starbucks. Main attractions such as the The Wharf and Aquarium are no more than 30-60 min walk away. Or there is always the free trolley running during the day. It was a delight to stay there and look forward to returning soon.

All the staff that helped us were friendly and welcomed us with professionalism and enthusiasm. Great location with Downtown 5 minutes by foot, Fishermans Wharf 15 mins, and Cannery Row 30 mins.Its a basic motel, yes, so manage your expectations folks. Clean with all the amenities you need, including free parking and coffee and a pool that was quite popular.Some of the negative reviews say more about the reviewers than the establishment. Besides, once you get there youll see the $300-$500/night places arent all that and their reviews arent that great either.Have already recommended to others and well be back as well.

We’ve stayed for two nights and everything was perfect. The rooms are really nice, the parking is super easy and has a parking lot and a garage. Location is awesome and the staff is super friendly. Breakfast is OK for what you payed, so do not expect more. Its a great value. By they way, we got there by the night and the man at the front desk was waiting for us and ready to welcome us. Lovely atmosphere for a motel but noisy from 6am onwards with trucks n heavy machinery stopping for petrol outside. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Easy check in and out, and parking was included. It was about a 10 minute walk down to the wharf and countless restaurants. A trolley stop was also nearby. We didnt need our car after our arrival. Some traffic noise from the road, but otherwise quiet on a crowded weekend.

This hotel is cheap and yet it has everything you need to enjoy Monterey. Service was good; I left to eat the extended continental breakfast (which includes make-your-own waffles) and when I returned to my room it was already cleaned and prepared by room service. The hotel recently (May 2015) renovated their rooms and it feels like it - everything looks clean and new.A few minor drawbacks: the walls are very thin so staying very quiet is appropriate as to not disturb your neighbors. The bathroom is very small and can feel cramped, and the minifridge and AC were both somewhat loud. Despite these flaws my stay was better than expected for what I paid.

Rooms were OK they arent a brand new eligent hotel but they dont pretend to be. The rooms were clean, beds were very comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. The price is lower than the others in area and its close to all the restaurants and waterfront....what more do you need than that. Theres a gas station next to it but it is not loud...I had a room by the street. It was louder during the day but at night there was hardly no traffic so it wasnt even a problem.

More of a motel than a hotel, behind the gas station. Located within walking distance to the wharf and downtown, a perfect location for spending NYE. The parking is free, ideal for when you plan to park and leave your car in their garage. The facilities were clean, the staff polite and friendly. The manager on duty came up personally and switched out our TV when we called the front desk informing them that it was broken. The breakfast, tea, and coffe were also complimentary.Overall a great bargain. My only critique is that the breakfast selection was limited.

Moderately priced and value for money place. The rooms are big and clean, with amenities like bath products, hair dryer, iron, coffee machine in the room. Easily accessible and well situated, it is an 8 min walk to the fishermans wharf and a 5 min walk to the Monterey downtown. Theres a Dennys right opposite to it and a Chevron on the corner. Breakfast was free and included coffee/tea, muffins, waffles, bread etc.

As soon as we arrived at the front desk, we were presented with great service and a speedy check in. We were given a map of where we were and some recommendations on where to go for food. The room was basic but really nice (TV options were great). Location wise this place is absolutely perfect, there was no need to drive anywhere. There is food and drink places on your doorstep and even more within walking distance. A great night sleep and one of the best places weve stayed on our trip.

As some of the other reviews have alluded to, this is definitely not a 5 star resort. However, if youre a budget-minded traveler looking for a place to stay near the Monterey downtown with free parking this is an awesome place. The building exterior is quite old-looking but most of the rooms seem to have been recently renovated, and the bathroom in my room was actually quite impressive. The bed was quite comfortable and oddly there were about 30 electrical sockets and USB ports at various points throughout the room for charging electronics. They seemed to have really gone overboard on these but its the 21st century and I cant really complain! There was some light noise from roadwork across the street and from neighbours coming home late, but overall nothing significantly troubling. The free breakfast is a bit spartan (fruits, boiled eggs, yogurt, cereals, a waffle station, coffee, and juices), but gets the job done if youre looking to load up on food. The staff at the front desk was friendly and extremely helpful with finding nearby attractions, giving recommendations for restaurants downtown, and other general advice. I would definitely recommend this place if you find yourself in Monterey and are looking for a decent place to stay for a good price.

We stayed at a number of motels in Monterrey and this one was our favorite. The owners obviously take pride in this place which is nice to see. Our room was very clean, ready on time, and quit. The free breakfast was good and included waffles, cereal, coffee, etc. There is a 24 hour gas station next door which concerned me at first but turned out awesome because 1) we never heard noise from it and 2) it made it very easy to buy bottled water, snacks without having to pay a premium or go far.

The hotel is a bit awkward. Plenty of parking on the side streets, but the single lane drIve was weird initially. The room temp wouldnt go below 75. It said maintenance. The neighbors could clearly be heard in the other room. The walls are thin, which could be a problem if you had noisy neighbors. The bed and room size are reminiscent of a cruise ship quality. In all...the room was okay. It wasnt awesome. It wasnt terrible.

The location cant be beat for the price and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. The room was not fancy, but was very clean and kept up, which is all we needed on this trip. You can walk everywhere in downtown Monterey from here and its an easy (though a bit longer) walk to Fishermans Wharf and Cannery Row. If youre a light sleeper, just beware that the gas station next door and the busy intersection nearby can be loud.

Its nice enough. They did a pretty good job of renovating an old travel lodge. After reading a few reviews talking about a leaking shower my girlfriend yelled after she was in the shower and I said let me guess.. Shower leaking? The shower head wasnt tightened all the way and was spraying over the shower door and all over the bathroom. I tightened it with my hands and it stopped spraying. The continental breakfast was nice. Overall the stay was pleasant. Side note. There was mystery water leaking in the parking garage.

Great value. Rooms are remodeled and pretty decent. Employees were nothing but amazing. I read other reviews that said it was noisy and I can see that, but for me it was bad. I was on the far end of the building on the 3rd floor. I could here the bus stop and announce the drop off location but it didnt bother me or impact my peace and quiet. If youre sensitive to noise you might want a different location further away from the downtown area. I thought this place was great, and never thought time I visit monterey I will definitely book here again.

The Stevenson is an excellent value for the money if you want to be within walking distance of everything in Monterey. Its super-clean, well-kept, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I ate breakfast at the Paris Bakery just a couple of blocks away, so I cant comment on the breakfast, but the hotels rooms are very comfortable, with everything you need, and extremely clean. You can walk to just about anything in downtown Monterey within 10-15 minutes.The only reason I give four stars is because--as other reviewers have commented--its noisy (from outside and inside the hotel). The hotel basically shares a parking lot with a 24 hour gas station, and theres also noise (doors shutting, kids crying) from the other rooms in the hotel. Im a heavy sleeper so this did not negatively affect my experience, but something to consider. Kudos to the staff on maintaining an affordable option right in Monterey!

The location is the selling point with excellent access to the main Monterey shopping streets and the wharf. Everything is pretty good and reasonably well kept, including the rooms, breakfast and pool.Parking in their onsite car park is limited so if you are going out in the car during the day you cant be back too late as you will be unable to find a spot.

This is just the sort of review that I find hard to write. This is an older motel that survives because of the constant demand in Monterey; so fairly priced for the area, but no real bargain. Very well located. The proprietor, Craig ? Smith ?, is often on duty and is very accommodating and friendly. “Ditto” for all staff. Typical “free breakfast” with that ubiquitous waffle machine, juice and good coffee. Free internet. Our safe was “DOA” but resurrected within 5 minutes, so great service. Excellent bed. We could have had a larger room, but didn’t want to spend the extra money. The commode seat was small and very close to the shower, which had poorly designed shower doors that leak like a sieve unless you direct the water toward the wall. Great shower otherwise. Probably inadequate parking if crowded. Excellent Denny’s across the street if you want more for breakfast or whatever. Trolley or bus to the great aquarium is nearby, as are many restaurants and shops. Despite a few minor shortcomings, we both really liked it here and will be returning for the big “car weekend” in August. Not the Portola, but less than half the cost.update: 08212017:We’ve stayed here on a number of occasions sometimes related to the Monterey “Car Week”, sometimes, not. It’s a nice older hotel, clean, comfortable and with excellent, friendly service.The owner, Craig, is always around so it’s easy to get any little extras you need. On the face of it, The Stevenson is expensive during the “Monterey Car Week”, but you’re paying for the location more than anything. If you want a fancy, luxurious, 5 star hotel with a great location, then you really want the Portola at conservatively a 3X markup where you pay extra for parking and internet. After a long drive and finding out our reservation had been made in error at a Best Western (it did not have a room turned out), I booked my family into a room at The Stevenson late (around10:00 pm) needing a place to stay for the night. After unloading and entering the room I was contacted by their on duty staff (Wendy) saying she saw my family exceeded the capacity limit via video and we could not stay in the room unless we booked two more rooms (we have seven total). This is the first time this has happened in likely over 75 plus hotel stays over the past 10 years. But whatever, Wendy was doing her job.I told her we would find another place to stay. We picked up our luggage, left the room and I went to the lobby to return the keys and make sure I was not charged for the room ($200+). It was at that point Wendy became very rude, unhelpful and confrontational. By the way the room was not appealing or as advertised (the room info said it had a king bed, which was really only a queen bed I’m pretty certain).I had booked through Expedia and needed her to confirm the situation to the Expedia rep I had on my phone, but she refused and required Expedia to call her directly. Expedia told me they would try do so immediately, but at that point Wendy told us we could not stay and had to leave the property and we could not wait in the lobby for Expedia to call. I said I just wanted to make sure Expedia called and the cancellation was confirmed and I would not be charged. She then claimed my refund was totally dependent on working with Expedia only and there was no reason to stay, but I told her if that was the case why did she require Expedia to call her directly. Me pointing out the inaccurate statement to her led her to then threaten to call the cops (the ridiculousness of the situation just continued to escalate). My wife, who had joined me in the lobby while our kids waited in our car, told her to feel free to do so, which she actually did. In her call to the police my wife heard her tell the police (I was still on the line with Expedia trying to make sure I wasn’t charged for the Best Western hotel too so I didn’t hear what was said) we were refusing to check out or leave our room and greatly misrepresent the situation and portray us in as negative light as possible.The Monterrey police arrived and the THREE officers who responded were all very professional and kind. We explained the situation from our view (who knows what Wendy told them) and they were far more helpful and responsive in explaining how to go about getting a refund/making sure we aren’t charged for the room. We then left and got another room.By the way I noticed the pool at the Stevenson was either very dirty or run down - not appealing at all to swim in for sure, not that we were going to be swimming given how late it was.In short, by far the worst experience I’ve had at a hotel in my life. I would not recommend this property. There’s far nicer places for less money. And based upon my interaction with their one staff member, you couldn’t find someone more unhelpful, rude and unprofessional.

I am very disappointed with the customer service I received regarding the reservation.I received a phone call from Andrea around 8pm asking time of arrival. I explained to her that my husband was having car issues and he was driving from Stockton. He would most likely arrive after midnight. I asked her if there was a problem that he would be checking in late and I didn’t receive information from my confirmation e-mail that check-in stopped at a certain time. Her attitude changed and she stated she would let the night auditor know.I received another phone call around midnight asking for time of arrival. I explained to the employee that I already spoke to Andrea regarding the information. The employee stated her shift started at 11pm and she did not receive information regarding a late check-in.The lack of communication among your staff and the unprofessional attitude is disappointing. I wish I did not booked a room at this property. I will be sure to let my friends and family know to stay away from this property, as well.

Everything was o.k. but not great. I felt like it was overpriced for what it was. The location was good though. It was a quick walk to restaurants a grocery store and the Tuesday night farmers market. A long but fun walk to the aquarium.The breakfast was dismal, the heated pool was cold and the room was small with only a tiny shower. Everything was clean enough.Next time I visit Monterey Ill either spend more for a nicer hotel or go cheaper. This was a weird overpriced middle ground.

Very pleasantly surprised by the Stevenson Monterey. It was a last minute booking for a quick overnight stay in Monterey. The desk staff was very courteous and helpful, and the room was comfortable and clean. And theres free wifi! If youre looking for no frills but comfortable place, I would definitely recommend it.

If you need cheap.... The room we stayed in was small and not suitable for tha plus sized individuals. I have seen tiny houses with bathrooms that seemed larger. The shower marginally suitable for plus size people, but certainly not for the claustrophobic. Unimpressed with breakfast.

My wife was looking forward to visiting our daughter at school this weekend. Unfortunately she tested positive with Covid today. The hotel is not willing to give us another stay or refund. Terrible business practice under these circumstances. Very tight underground, very limited parking stalls. One way entrance/exit and bearly any room to turn around to get out without hitting another car. BEWARE OF MOTEL MANAGEMENT AND EMPLOYEES!!! I stayed here for one night on 05/26/2019. I was in Monterey for Scuba diving and I thought this would be a great place to stay, well I was wrong. Today I found out my card was charged an additional $250! I called the office during my lunch break at work and the lady on the phone was accusing me of smoking marijuana in my room. I told her there was no way it was me, but she insisted there was a strong smell of marijuana in my room as well as smoke. Either management is flat out trying to rip off their guests or the housekeeping staff have made a habit of smoking in peoples rooms. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

This is the Worst Stay I have Encountered. Stayed here from Tuesday 3/19/2019 through 3/22/2019 and everything was normal for our vacation until check out. We left the hotel 20 min out on our way home and got a call saying we are being charged because of a missing hairdryer that was not in the room at all, but the front office guy was only told what was missing and swear based on a physical check from the maid that there was one before we entered. This has been a mess, we had to complain on the phone that we didnt have one, or take one because we have no idea what it looks like. We drive back to the hotel and It started raining and to prove to the staff we dont have it, we took all of our items out of the car while all of our stuff is getting wet, and still nothing. But the staff(guy with long black hair)can do is still say its missing and you will be charged. I asked him how much and he said 50 dollars. It turned into a he said she said, and I was so mad, as we just stayed at your hotel for 4 days and just checked out. I tried talking to the staff working and the front office guy came out yelling at me saying I have no rights to talk to the staff and I told him I do have the right to communicate, as he threatened to call the cops as he walked away back to the office. We are still outside looking all over again for something I asked the staff what it actually looks like for more clarification. This is the worst place and service I have ever had, to be a customer here who just checked out. As times goes by, Im upset crying while my boyfriend is trying to calm me down as we dont have it, and how could they assume we took this.They didnt think it was possible that there staff made a mistake or the fact people probably have been taking stuff all the time or there staff is, and they are just replacing it with backups or extra storage. But blame and try to charge the people who just checked out and swore they didnt have it, even with a physical check of there own outside in the rain.

The ocean and location keeps me focused. I enjoy the Travelodge in downtown Monterey because you can walk to our destination. Also staff are very helpful. They only got two stars because the rooms were decent and clean. The staff was not friendly at all the manager/owner was even worse, very rude and nasty to guests all because we were a group of bikers. Now I remind you never judge a book by its cover, just because someone comes into your hotel dressed in leathers and motorcycle gear doesnt mean they are bad people or part of a gang. We were there for a nice weekend ride with friends and a trip to the aquarium and a nice ride to Caramel. But as soon as we entered the building the owner had an attitude and was very rude when he was asked about AAA discount and implied that our friend was lying to him when she said she called and someone told her they offer a AAA discount. Then the next morning at breakfast the girl who was making sure everything stayed full was not a happy person and when we spoke to her and said thank you she just ignored us and went on with whatever she was doing. Parking was tight and not many spaces. The hotel itself is behind a gas station on a 3way corner and it was very noisy with lots of traffic.

I booked on a major internet travel site and paid extra for cancelable, non-pre payment rate. Room charge was to be over $1,0000. Stay as for just under 10 months out from booking.Well, about 2 hours post reservation of my NON-PRE PAYMENT REQUIRED, more expensive, cancelable rates, they charged the entire rooms in full.Calling them twice did not rectify the situation. Nor did the customer service department for the site I booked these rooms on assist.The people were rude, dishonest (told me I had booked a non-cancelable rate, which was proven to be not true) and would do nothing to help me.I made a review on a major travel site, indicating what had happened, and the hotel management is currently trying to get my 100% truthful, documented review removed.I highly recommend you do not stay here. They are provably dishonest and you apparently cannot trust them with your credit card info, as they feel it their right to charge you, even 10 or so months out, regardless of the type of rate you booked.All they had to do was apologize and refund the rate.
