Friendly staff! Wonderful diverse pet selection. Warmth and love fills the walls of this place. I met a wonderful distinguished American Bully named Kukor and a talented young employee Max. Together, both of them changed my perspective on Shelter Dogs. Ive donated the pictures I took with Kukor and I would love to donate a few more Ive taken around SLO. Feel free to reach out. What an amazing and patient group of people who truly love and care for the animals. I adopted from here and was blown away when I returned three months later and one of the staff members remembered my dogs name from across the yard! You just dont get that kind of attention at some of these other shelters. It NEVER stinks in there and I do not believe in the several times I have been there that there was even an accident on the floor. An amazing facility and I will be back!

On the day I visited, looking to adopt a dog, front desk staff was indifferent. OK, so I figured they dont matter. I was brought out to meet a dog who was clearly a poor match. The volunteer who introduced me to the dog knew nothing about the first dog offered, and she was uninformed about other potential matches. Fortunately I have enough dog experience that I was not misled. Im baffled why Woods is talked about as though they are the only adoption service in SLO. Go instead to the County Animal Services, where youll find helpful, knowledgeable, caring people. I adopted my wonderful dog there in October 2023.

Took my English Mastiff Boogie to his last C.H.A.R.M. School class yesterday. Michelle and Skyler are excellent instructors and trainers--we have ALL learned so much from them...and Boogie has made a lot of progress.Really nice to see how well Michelle and Skyler work with a variety of dogs--such knowledgeable and patient trainers! I highly recommend these classes, and the entire Woods Facility is well done, and a safe environment.My gratitude to all the people and volunteers who work so hard to find good homes for SO many deserving pets.Thank you for all you do!!

Such amazing people! We fell on hard times and couldnt keep our beloved dog at the only place we have to live, and they were really good to him. He was adopted within a week. The staff were all super friendly, understanding, and caring. They even called us to let us know he was adopted. We miss him so much, but they didnt add to our pain at all. I wish the people who adopted him had opted to contact us so I could send them pictures from he was a puppy and have an update on how he is doing, but we just pray that theyre all happy together and that he has lots of love shown to him.

AMAZING and LOVING staff! I ask so many questions everywhere I go and sometimes get snobby and sassy attitude BUT Woods staff is so patient and understanding♡ They gave me the most precious pup. Knowing how scared he is of people and seeing him with staff just showed how loving of a staff they are. My pup was so comfortable with them!

They showed amazing kindness to a dog (Clyde) that was there for seven months(!) until I adopted him. We went through obedience class for bonding/training purposes, and Clyde is now a well-adjusted part of our family. Thank you, Woods!

Amazing staff, quite impressed with the cat facility. We got a nine week old kitten. Meet my Wink!..her sister was Blink. Wink is in process for a newer, non-shelter name. Many wonderful adults and juvinals are waiting for fur-ever homes. Less mess and you already know what kinda cat its going to be-less surprised ahead.I hope to volunteer there with my kiddo. Even if you cant adopt, you can impact the lives of these awesome animals by spending time with them, which helps prepare them for adoption with your love and attention.

Woods is great! I got two of my dogs here, and they are really great people to work with. You get a free vet visit and awesome pack to take home. The people here genuinely care that the dogs go to good homes. Theyre a no-kill shelter, and they take really great care of the animals here. Very clean and great pets.

Clean environment with plenty of friendly and helpful staff members (and some volunteers) that are here to answer any questions or issues. Woods seems to be more interested in quota than placing animals in the right home. Watched my friend who is not a dog trainer adopt a dog that had a history of biting people and still does, with no follow up. She should have not been given a dog like that. It was plain to see she could not socialize it. Just witnessed another adoption to a family that already have 2 dogs in a small condo with 3 people in Grover Beach. I love animals, but this is why I am not a fan of Woods. Other trainers I have spoke with witness the same thing with Woods.

Woods is an incredible facility! We adopted a wonderful dog from there in San Luis Obispo. They take incredible care of the animals. They are ready to be adopted because they have onsite Vets, are walked every day multiple times, and are given some training. The animals leave trim and healthy. The staff lets you know about the dogs personality as much as they can and any obvious health conditions. Very few animals are returned. I love this place! The staff is devoted to the animals. The facility is funded by donations. We have a rescued Pitbull originally named Tex. We renamed him Buddy and hes the king 👑of our home now. Thank you Woods and Phil for helping us find our fur baby!

Last time I went to Woods it was a friendly environment. Today I went to see dogs and see which one I bonded with. Surprise you need to pick one, and they bring it. That isnt good for a person wanting to see, and feel the dogs. Sadly, I cant do it that way. Went next door to SLO Animal Services and got to visit all the animals. Found a guy, who isnt available today, but soon. Disappointed in changes at woods, sure they have reasons but it isnt fair, to the dogs that arent cute in picture, but have it in person.

The building is kept immaculate and is impressive. It is a beautiful shelter. Over the phone the staff was helpful, at first, but once I surrendered the litter their attitude became indifferent. I had called to inquire about the litter of kittens and the Mama cat. I understand this shelter is busy but the impatience was heard in the tone of the employees voices. Only one gal was helpful and a joy to speak to. I was worried about the two kittens they had placed in the sick room. They werent sick. The shelter was full but they couldnt be visited by potential adopters because of where they were placed. It took months before the two were adopted.

Granddaughter volunteered and red to the kitten. Dreamsicle is 4 months old available for adoption and is the sweetest softest cat Ive ever been around. I was very timid to rescue an animal but my wife and kids really REALLY wanted a dog. Woods makes everything comfortable! The rescue fee is extremely reasonable. Neutered, shots, bag of food, 30 days of pet insurance... and more. The people were super nice and went above and beyond. The website was updated regularly with good descriptions. I would recommend them to anyone looking to add a furry companion to their house.

Yesterday afternoon, 02/01/2020, I adopted my first kitten as an early birthday present for myself. She is the exact age, short hair length and black color fur that I was looking for. Plus, she was up to date on her shots, had recently trimmed her nails, healing from being spayed, and is in great health so far. They had so many adorable kittens/cats. The facility looked very clean. The cats were free to roam around and play in a large room or they could catch some vitamin D outside in a caged patio type room. Most importantly, the staff was extremely friendly and gave me a lot of appreciated advice. The process of filling out the adoption paperwork was rather quick. I even saved $30 for the adoption cost, compared to what was stated it would be online. I was also thrilled to save 10% on all the pet items they had available for my sweet kitty. I got a litter box, litter, scratching post, toys, and a collar that she will grow into eventually. They provided a free cardboard carrying case and a bag of kitten food. They also offer 30 days of pet insurance for free, you must sign up within 24 hours of adoption. I went ahead and signed her up, just in case something comes up within that time related to being around so many other felines. My kitty is 11 weeks old, well behaved and has already used her new litter box! I highly recommend using The North County Woods Humane Society, if youre interested in adopting a cat/kitten.

Only got my cat neutered here but it was an easy experience. Dropped him off when I was supposed to, picked him up when I was supposed to and the deed was done. He was in high spirits within an hour of pick up. Very competent and well run organization. I didnt get his shots here but when I got him neutered here I saw the prices for shots and they were considerably better than what I paid so I recommend doing that here as well

We were told by the lady at the front desk with a nose ring that we needed to bring our dog in, who we know is socialized, we got him from there too, so I had to go all the way to Santa Maria and back if we wanted this other dog. She had told us that if one of us stayed while the other one of us went and brought our dog that it could work. So I drove back to Santa Maria and then back to SLO twice. All that just for them to let another person see the dog and take it. If it wasn’t guaranteed I wouldn’t have wasted the gas but she gave us hope. You never know what people are going through, this was supposed to be a gift to my mother to help her get over her father passing away. We are devastated to say the least and now I feel terrible that I promised my mother this dog. I’m sorry on my end for cursing, I’m not gonna play holier than thou on here but we were both upset at the situation and are coping with it now. I don’t even want a response I just want you guys to know, don’t go giving out false hope. I can’t see myself ever going back, I’m sorry. We were excited and didn’t read anything extra other than the dogs info, maybe put it in bold letters on the top next to their picture? We’re just angry and hurt but nevertheless wishing you all the best.

All kitties appeared well taken care of. I have not been through the dog residences yet, but have met many new owners with their newly adopted dogs & all parties were extremely happy & positive about Woods. Went in to ask about my cat Tiger whom was found at 5 weeks old by my friend on her property. Have had Tiger since March and was curious about spade and microchip options at Woods. Due too phone problems and no internet at my place they let me use a computer they had for public use. They were very kind, helpful and I signed up my Tiger for the two things in one easy, simple application. The deposit was $25 down and overall around $70 for both procedures. Way more reasonable than the local vet clinics!

I ALWAYS rescue dogs there or at the county shelters, Id guess Woods does more for their charges, the counties have misrepresented dogs AND PROVIDED DOGS that hadnt been retrained. Which required many months for me to retrain! Animals at these facilities all have histories--sometimes BAD!

Well maintained and clean facility staffed with people and volunteers who obviously love animals a lot. They have signs on each kennel explaining the temperaments of the dogs and describing what type of family/situation would be a good fit. They have visiting rooms where you can have one-on-one time with potential pets. Always seems well staffed with volunteers giving cats social time, walking dogs, talking to visitors, etc.

Woods is an amazing place for so many reasons. Not only do they help animals find loving forever homes but they work endlessly to ensure that the animals have the best care while there. When our family dog got out and into some trouble they found him and brought him in in a hurry. They gave him a little check up and kept him safe. They were able to contact us and get home fast. This is one of the best shelters I have ever been to in California. The staff are extremely nice and have extra information on each of their pets. Their goal is to adopt the right pet to the environment they have at home. This is a very clean environment for the animals. There are so many toys and cat walk ways for them all to enjoy while co-existing with each other. I heard that the dogs get let out at least 2-4 times a day to exercise. Other shelters barely seem like they let their dogs out of their kennels. Please adopt from woods they have the nicest dogs and cats.

Great facility. Lots of space for the various animals. The people were courteous and friendly. When taking one of the dogs to be viewed by potential adopting family, the dog was scared and would not be moved with the leash. Instead of dragging the animal by the leash like many employees may do, this employee knelt next to the dog to comfort him then picked him up and took him to the viewing room.

We found our forever pet--thank you! before meeting him, one of the techs gave us thorough information about the dog over the phone, and then solicited information about our lifestyle. When we arrived at Woods, we were met with another tech and were taken to a yard outside for us to interact with him. We took him home that day, not only with our perfect dog, but also a great amount of information about him. The process was so easy -- even during the CoVid pandemic. Earlier in the pandemic I could never get there in time to adopt a small, couch potato fur baby (pup). I guess theyre less in demand now because I didnt have any competition. They now do walk-in only with prior online application. I liked being given the option to wait outside as there were a lot of people in the lobby. I had my meet and greet in an enclosed outdoors area and the employee gave me some treats (nice, since I forgot to grab some at home). They didnt rush me. I decided to adopt a 3 year old Maltese I named Namaste. They gave thorough guidance and are available post-adoption for help. Thats why I love Woods and am a donor. They truly care about animals. Wish me luck that my kitty CousCous gets along with him!!

This is a great organization. I donate to woods every year, as well as donate supplies and toys during the holidays. We’ve also adopted 3 dogs from Woods in the past 14 yrs. Our two 14 yr old Woods rescues passed away in 2018, within 5 months of each other. They were the best dogs; loving, loyal, sweet, beautiful, smart and happy dogs. I miss them so much. We decided to adopt a new dog for our boys and our remaining dog (she’s a local rescue, too) and we saw a puppy on Woods FB posts. We went down there, met the puppy, and fell in love. She’s such a good puppy and my boys love her. Woods is clean, the dogs/cats are very well cared for, and the staff nice. We did have a bit of an indifferent staff member helping us when we adopted our puppy. She was sort of rushed and not the friendliest, but they were also very busy and close to closing. Regardless of that, I will continue adopting from Woods! And there will be more adoptees in the future!

I enjoy visiting the Woods Humane Society. They have a great selection of animals and the cats seem pretty happy to be there. They have tons of space for them to hang out inside or outside and be constantly visited by potential owners. This is the cleanest and most organized Humane Society I have ever been too. My experience was back in 2010...we adopted a 3 year old female dog. She will be 10 this year and she is an angel. She had been brought into Woods in terrible condition, but you should see her now...shes gorgeous. Everyone was great there and I would definitely go to Woods again.

Beautiful facility and very clean. Youre allowed to spend time with the cats, play with them, pick them up and hold them (if they let you), pet them, etc. Its therapeutic for you and the cats. I wish similar could be said for the dogs but I do understand theyre less predictable. Very good place to get an animal. I would have adopted if I could have.

This shelter is the BEST! We just adopted a 7 month old Shepherd/Lab mix from here and we were so impressed with how the adoption process went. They first let us meet him and get to know him then asked that the other dog he will be living with come meet him! I love that they did this because it gave us the opportunity to make sure they would get along! They really take care of the animals because our new puppy doesnt show signs of any mistreatment or any PTSD type behavior from being there like fear or anything. On our first night with the new one (Jack) we expected he would be a little stressed and worried about a new place, but nothing like that happened! He climbed up in bed next to me and slept through the night. Now I think we just struck gold with Jack, but Woods helped! Their staff is friendly and helpful and advised us that if there any problems that we can call and ask questions or seek help! No complaints about Woods!

I adopted REBA in 2010 after losing my first dog in 2007 and Woods helped me through the loss in order to adopt my REBA. REBA was my whole being she loved me more than herself and I loved her for a wonderful FIVE years- was I lucky as she was 10 when I adopted her. I again was at a loss of a dog and heart broken. Misty came into my life as a 10 year old and she looked just like my REBA. My first dog taught me how to love a dog, my second dog taught my how a dog loves you and my third dog taught me both love for me and love for herself. Thanks to Woods and my rescues my world became bigger and better. I will again adopt from Woods as they are TRUE LOVE. Thank you GOD.

Nice and clean facility. The problem is that they refused to allow me to adopt a German shepherd despite owning 3 previously. Tried on two occasions with two different dogs and told no both times because I have kids despite not even allowing the dog to meet my kids. Employees didnt meet my kids. Because of their refusal to even consider my wife and I, we bought one instead who loves my kids and they love her in return. Too bad a home owning foster parent doesnt qualify for adoption. Not sure what they dont like about me, just deny me with little feedback. The county believes I am good home for children, but evidently Im not good enough for a dog according to woods.

Had an unpleasant experience with a worker. She basically talked down to us because we asked about a specific dog (which we had seen online) and then asked to look at a completely different dog. Then she made it uncomfortable and awkward and pushed us to hurry up. We then wanted to see another dog and she was so rude and didnt give us the opportunity to see how the dog meshed with us before asking if wed like to get her or should she put her back in the cage. Very unsettling and not able to view or bond with dog with experiencing an attitude. Everyone else was super friendly and we had no issues. Unfortunately we left without adopting a dog and may not consider returning in the future.

I meant to submit 5 stars for Woods Humane Society and unable to edit/correct it, despite following Googles instructions. Im grateful to Woods for caring for our Bailey when my husband was ALS terminal, and we could no longer provide high quality pet care. Woods volunteers worked with Baileys social skills (we rescued him from an abusive home), one of the Volunteers adopted him, that had met Bailey at a Pet Hotel we would place Bailey when traveling, and to this day, sends me photos and updates on his health and well-being. The volunteer has since moved out of town. Though forever grateful for all the hard work, dedication, cleanliness of the facility and the happy-go-lucky smiles of the staff who works with great devotion.

They do such a good job and are so friendly. The only bad thing I have to say about Woods is that they move their animals through so fast you have to be very decisive if you see one you want. Otherwise it might be gone by the end of the day. But that is only bad for me, it is very good for the animals.

Great shelter! Adopted a cat (named Flizzard, renamed Lewis) from there back in 2017.(Unfortunately, we had to euthanize him today due to kidney failure 😥. RIP.) Service is great, strongly recommend going there to adopt a cat! Next time I travel to SLO, I will definitely look into adopting a cat from here!
