Valley Art Workshop is a very special and enchanting place to come to learn about art. Miles Lewis is not only a gifted artist, he is also a brilliant instructor who has helped my visions come to fruition. After one year of hard work I learned new techniques, have been challenged and discovered how to enhance channeling my imagination. Miles has an engaging teaching style where his knowledge, communication, and overall uplifting environment come together to give us an inspiring space in his workshops. Therefore, I highly recommend taking classes at Valley Art Workshop.

Valley Art Workshop has one of the best studio environment for life drawing. I like for format from quick study to a long pose provides extra drawing time. If you need lessons Miles is a great instructor and there a lot of talent that practices there. They provide good music and treats. My 10 year old grand daughter is learning to art at Valley Art Workshop.

I couldnt be happier to have discovered Valley Art Workshop where my 11 year old daughter has been taking art classes for the past year. Unlike many other art classes where all kids just make the same picture with lots of adult guidance, this is a place where kids, teens, or adults can learn and apply foundational techniques in art. My daughter has benefited so much from having a teacher who is actually a professional artist and I have seen a huge growth in her skills just during this year. We know this is a class that she will continue in for a long time to come.

I cannot speak highly enough of Miles Lewis and the Valley Art Workshop. Whether you are considering a career as a professional artist or an enthusiastic hobbyist looking to develop your skills, you will find great classes here in a wide variety of media and styles. Several years ago I was looking for an art class for my teenage daughter. Her public high school offered no visual arts classes whatsoever and it was difficult to find a substantial drawing class in the area that catered to teens. We were both delighted to discover the Valley Art Workshop. My daughter is now an Experimental Animation major and a Teaching Assistant at CalArts, and she still talks about the classes she took with Miles, how much she enjoyed them and how beneficial they were to her development as an artist. She appreciates the individual attention that Miles gives to his students as well as his “direct and straightforward” teaching style, and describes the beautiful environment of the studio as a “Sanctuary of The Arts.” Valley Art Workshop is unique entity, a gem of the Valley where students can explore their creativity while developing concrete skills, and Miles Lewis is an excellent teacher. Look no further if you want to study art in the Valley. He also teaches childrens art classes at the Tarzana Community & Cultural Center.

Life drawing classes at the Miles estate are splendid. The drawing-room is spacious and the Plein Air space is equally generous.The fellow artist are lovely, theres often a little snack, and Miles is happy to give suggestions, or you can draw on your own. Highly recommend!

Miles is a world class educator. I attended a master class today. I also have attended the life drawing drop in groups as well.Miles does an exceptional job informing educated professionals and including children in the masters classes at the same time I am very impressed and enjoy his programming, talent, and methodology.Ive taken art classes in many major cities and have a BFA. Miles is an outstanding teacher for all age groups. I highly recommend Miles.

Valley Art Workshop is a fantastic place for children to learn. Miles Lewis’ approach emphasizes foundational skills and the intellectual/conceptual side of art without putting limitations on what children can be expected to create or directing them too narrowly into take home projects. Our son has greatly enjoyed his many classes there and has been proud to take techniques he’s learned and apply them in school or projects at home. Miles treats each student as an individual and delivers a highly personal experience for them. We would recommend this studio to anyone without hesitation. This is a different type of art workshop and a great resource for the community.

I also love that I can have uninstructed drawing time at these workshops to practice my craft.Miles is very knowledgeable, and an excellent teacher. I have had him come to my school for an artist in residence day to teach life drawing to my high school students. He brought an experienced costumed model, and both of them worked very well with my students. I look forward to having him come back again.

I had moved back to The Valley several years ago and was searching for a place to work on drawing/painting - that wasn’t stuffy or restrictive. I recall attending about 3 classes in September 2023 and stopped because the “instructor,” as well as the other attendees and environment did not meet my expectations and made me uncomfortable with their foul characters and intent; therefore I had no intentions of returning since then.

Discovering the Valley Art Workshop a few years ago was a true gift! I wanted to start life-drawing practice again, after many years. Miles welcomed me in his wonderful valley studio, where every Saturday morning a group of artists of all ages would gather and draw from life models. It was truly different every week, yet very familiar. I loved the practice, the atmosphere, the community, the music in the background, the sharing of conversations during the breaks, and some special moments with Miles family members. Valley Art Workshop is the perfect mix of learning and fun. My 6 year old granddaughter can’t wait until Thursdays when its time for painting class! Miles is exceptional as an instructor. He is able to explain technique on a level a kindergartener can understand. He teaches sketching, shadow, perspective,various brush techniques, and all the skills young artists need to flourish. My husband and I took an etching class a few years ago at the Valley Art Workshop and we found Miles to be an excellent teacher. He is so very knowledgeable and passionate about art and teaching. He is exceptional at explaining concepts and process too. Very patient and attentive. One of my Very Happy Places. I found it when I was looking for art classes for my son. He loved working with Miles. Then I started attending the live model sessions and it became my studio in a way. A beautiful room full of wonderful music and the quiet sounds of artists making marks. Excellent Models. My son joined the life drawing as well, with coaching from Miles as needed. I had a great time teaching at the valley Workshop. The facilities were fantastic. The students were extremely enthusiastic and had a lot of really great questions to ask, which made the entire experience very enjoyable for sure. We went over a lot of stuff during our short class, but I was still blown Away by all the wonderful creative ideas that the students came up with. My 7-year old son loves coming to Miles’ studio. The sketching lessons have helped him improve on several techniques. I like that the sketching sessions are 2-hours long and push my son to sustain his interest along with the older students. The watercolors class is great too. Given the rapport my son is developing with Miles, my son has started to embrace watercolors painting whereas normally he shied away from it.Miles is professional, prepared, experienced, and most importantly tailors his instruction to students’ levels. I wouldn’t mind seeing more art sessions being offered in the future.

I have been going to the worship for 6 Years. The owner offers a very nurturing environment (good music too) and runs the workshop very professionally. There is a good pool of models. I had no experience in art, but always wanted a creative outlet. So I jumped into figure drawing with no art experience. Figure drawing is very challenging, but so rewarding if you can capture the essence of one thing during the session. Also, there is a range of experienced art students, so I can learn from watching others. Of course you can’t beat the cost compared to other studios in the Valley. The whole experience is very therapeutic.

Miles Lewis was one of the first art teachers I ever had and my time spent taking his classes are some of my fondest memories. I felt as though art classes after his paled a bit in comparison. The lessons at Valley Art taught me strong and foundational techniques for portraiture and still life that I don’t believe I learned anywhere else quite like I did with Miles. I have attended Mile’s Valley Art Workshop figure drawing on Saturdays. The models are professional. I attended pre covid days and we worked inside in the great room. Good light, snacks, and occasionally we would hear the mellow sound of some playing the cello in another room. The ambience was calm while we would draw or paint. There were plenty of easels or chairs or enough places to set up a small easel of your own.I loved coming to draw my charcoal sketches there in that studio. I am looking forward to returning. Traveling from Scottsdale, Arizona to visit my family in Woodland Hills over spring break a few weeks ago, my son had an art project due when he got back to school(junior in highschool). Calling several places in the area, I came across Valley Art Workshop and spoke with Miles. He was so accommodating and got my son a session to help him finish his art project before we returned to Arizona. My son went to his session with Miles on a Saturday. Very well run live-model drawing atelier. Miles knows what he is doing and the nice variety of models are coordinated in conjunction with Gallery Girls. There is slight variation between the days but typical poses go from 2, 10, 20 minutes ending in a pose over an hour. It is a comfortable, easy place to come do figure drawing.

The valley art workshop has been a staple to the advancement in my drawing in painting knowledge. They offer a uninstructed (or instructed approach), relaxed, and open atmosphere with local artists, which is what I love the most about it. The models are also always professional. Delightful scene overall.Elegant, gracious setting in Old Hollywood getaway surrounded by ancient SF Valley citrus groves—among the very last. Framed by formal pool and tennis court, Miles has transformed the enormous main hall reception room into “The Studio.” Very cool with hip crowd who laugh at jokes (mine especially) and groove with the muse who always delivers a quality act.

I started my artistic path in earnest at Valley Art. There is simply not a more competent, approachable, and knowledgeable instructor than Miles Lewis. I was fortunate enough to take several years of classes touching on topics ranging from painting, copper etching, printmaking, digital layout/concept art, landscapes, still lives, and live model life drawing. I was introduced to styles and mediums that are abysmally lacking in school art programs.In painting (a medium I found intimidating before taking the class) we used gouache, egg tempera, raw pigment oils, ink, and watercolor. This introduction to painting presented it as the beautiful passion and craft it is, as well as contextualizing it with the introduction of great artists, art history, and technique I am still harboring an obsession for. We learned more about layout, color theory/mixing, style, and technique in one class than I did in four years of undergraduate courses.The Life drawing classes I took here are still the most valuable courses I have taken to date. The portfolio we built got me into the majority of my top art schools, and the techniques I learned at Valley Art have proved accurate and beneficial constantly.Miles is a gifted painter, but his best gift may be in how he conveys his expertise. The classes are intimate and deeply informative while still being fun. Not a single class went by, that I didnt feel like a better draftsman and technical artist.We went to galleries and museums. We sketched and painted landscapes in person. We even got experience doing a mural which was extremely cool to be a part of.Miles is also a community leader in the environmental activism movement, and showed me how art can be a tool for speaking out and unifying people.Go here.
