They are not only professional, extremely knowledgeable about tenant protection laws, they are beyond compassionate and kind. No one ever wants to be in a vulnerable position with their landlord. When a crisis happens its difficult to sort through your thoughts and the trauma, never mind the details of essential aspects of the situation. My husband was seriously injured in a hot water heater accident. This took place in a shoddy rental that we moved into at the start of the pandemic. We needed help immediately and I was worried that we had no one to turn to.I had never considered calling a lawyer in my life because any conflict I had ever encountered was negotiable to some degree. As my husband was lying in a hospital bed and I was staying in a hotel room with our three disabled kids, our landlord was suggesting we call the Red Cross and shelters to get help. He refused to help us and didn’t care that this wasn’t an inconvenience as he described it, but rather a horrifying life changing event. It rapidly became apparent that we would get no extension of concern or care for a situation that he created.When I called Tobener Ravenscroft I was devastated that we found ourselves in such a bind with so much hanging precariously in the balance. I was scared because we knew my husband would never work in his chosen career again and he had sustained life altering injuries. The implications were far reaching. While the injuries and the cause of such were apparent, I’d had little time to think about all the egregious code violations that led to the situation. I figured this was a tenancy issue somehow so I decided to start with lawyers who dealt with just that. I found Tobener Ravenscroft law offices through a search. She quickly sent out someone to take a record of the code violations and to contain the amount of damage the landlord could do had he gotten wind of us seeking legal counsel. With that information they took on our tenancy case. The injury case was a separate case and they referred us to another law firm who took over the injury side. They worked in conjunction to make sure that there was a solid flow of information and so that we had the most optimal chance of winning both suits.Allyson Murphy, who is a Senior Associate, finished our tenancy case and we won. She was proactive, mindful and communicative. I cant say how much we appreciated her attitude towards the case and her hard work.We all know that lawyers too have a vested interest in winning, but the reality is that their job has an underrepresented and unseen value. Tobener Ravenscroft is a top-notch, professional tenant law firm. During the pandemic our landlord moved in tenants who operated multiple illegal businesses in their apartment. I had never experienced living next to this type of activity. We discovered their social media was used primarily for advertising to host parties, provide female escort services, gambling/entertainment and other operations that could generate money in their apartment. Without getting into all the details, I can say we felt extremely unsafe and disturbed by these activities. Law enforcement could only do so much, ultimately it came down to our landlord who continued to look the other way and let us suffer living next to this insanity.We reached out to city officials, law enforcement and other law firms to seek advice on how to proceed with our landlord and nuisance neighbors and Ravenscroft was there to help right from the get go. When I first contacted this office I felt they were very responsive, they follow through etc…Of course they did because they saw the possibility of making money.The issue happened during mediation. I felt bullied into accepting a settlement by my own attorney Toberner. I felt abandoned by the attorney. He even yelled at me for not following his legal advise and telling me to settle. I felt he wanted a quick payday and didn’t want to risk losing in trial because he would get zero money if we did.In my heart I felt we had a good case. I was a protected tenant in a rent controlled flat given a 3-month temporary eviction for Capital Improvements. All I can say is WOW! I did not expect such stellar service from these people who I came to find out are WONDERFUL! In my occasional dealings with attorneys in the past, I have usually felt rushed or not important enough in their eyes to be fully heard, unless I paid thousands of dollars in retaining fees. Such was absolutely not the case with Tobener Ravenscroft, and specifically attorney, Tina Collins.I contacted them because I was being harrassed by my apartment manager at a brand new apartment complex I just moved into 3 weeks ago in Oakland. They have been harassing me mercilessly because my two sons have been visiting me almost every day (not staying overnight) because they are essentially my caretakers. I have severe arthritis and I am dependent on them for many things to get through the day. Sometimes Im fine but other times Im quite disabled. The apartment managers watch the cameras like a hawk and every time they see my sons entering the building with the fob or by calling me on the intercom, they harass them and tell them they cannot use the key fob and and that they are coming here too often. They also call me day and night and tell me this over and over, and accuse them of staying the night..which is absolutely not true.This seemed wrong to me in every way. Forced to be put on the lease for visiting their mother to help with activities of daily living she cant? Ridiculous! I can see this being an issue if they stayed the night frequently and stayed for hours on end, but they dont. They come over for a few hours, help with what I need, maybe return later to help with more things, and then leave. Some days they dont come over at all.Anyway, I finally got fed up with the endless harassment and felt I needed some answers and possibly some leverage, as the management was beginning to insinuate they would evict me if my sons were not put on the lease.I had my doubts that an attorney would help me without charging an expensive retaining fee, but this companys website seemed so friendly and I loved how they really seemed caring in the verbiage they used on their website, and also how adamant they were about how passionate their lawyers are in defending tenants rights. After nearly 3 years at my apartment in Oakland my property manager decided to enforce breed restrictions, giving us 3 days to get rid of my dog or face eviction, despite having my dog as a registered ESA, and having no incidents or complaints about my dog on the premises. Joe Tobner has to be THE TENANT ATTORNEY OF THE BAY AREA. Joe gets the job done. We were threatened with price gouging from the city in our rent controlled apartment. Joe Toebner was able to talk to the new landlords to bring down our rent for the next five years saving us several thousands of dollars. I was up against a slumlord that did everything possible to get away with being what he really is. An individual who doesnt abide by laws that we are supposed to abide by. Being a single parent in a very expensive county is no joke.Having to practically work 3 jobs to survive practically not kidding almost killed me. I had a daughter I had to support and make sure she was educated. This man turned my world upside down literally, not wanting to fix anything but put a bandaid on it. I was in a landlord-initiated buyout situation where I had no experience. Jim Lucey ended up getting me more money than was initially offered, but there were times when I needed to remind him of details or some buyout conditions ended up being not quite what we had discussed.
