Great place to watch a movie if you can find parking and feel comfortable in this neighborhood. The vibe is young, welcoming, and relaxed. They have plastic glasses for you to drink. Beer and food are available, but Id advise you to come 45 minutes early, at least because the line is long. As a matter of fact, the line twists along the floor to maximize the small space in the front. Just follow the painted strip of film.

I could not speak highly enough about the New Parkway Theatre - its a response to all the commercialized and profit-motivated theaters that has taken over the industry. And what a breath of fresh air. Its such a gem of an institution, clearly very detail - from the food to the seating to the popcorn seasoning to the commercials to the programming - is so thoroughly thought out. Its such an extension of the community-orientation that is so fundamental to Oakland. They only play free ads for local businesses and brick-and-mortars, wrap their tips into the cost of food/drinks, and everything is reusable.Will be a staple theater for as long as I live in Oakland x

This is way more than a movie theater: its where community comes together. Be it through board games, shared art activities or karaoke, they make a point of providing a space for people to come together. They have great movie options - the usual but also some more artsy ones. They have a full f&b menu, their popcorn is delicious and Ive never had such an amazing stout milkshake (yes, you read that right, a beer milkshake). They keep their prices low by being very sustainable and locally sourced, all in all an amazing place!

Best movie theater I have ever been to by a large margin. It is so imaginatively unique, community forward, liberation-minded, comfy-cozy and they have a great selection of vegan options on the menu. I feel lucky to have such a place in the community I live in. I would give the 10 stars if I could.

A treasure of an indie movie house. Warm staff, good food and drink selection reasonably priced, and fun social events throughout the week. Good movie selections, though I wish they would show more classics. Movie seating on comfy couches is a nice touch.

This is the place to go see movies in Oakland. Delicious food, good beverage choices, and the staff is always very friendly. I especially love the adult cartoon showings they do in the back theater with the comfy couches.

We hosted an event at this space recently. It was amazing. Moses and his team were super helpful, responsive and caring. The food was fantastic and our guest loved it. I highly recommend this venue for corporate or group events!

I love the vibe here! They have fun social events during the week. The food is great and the seating arrangement is cool. You dont have to tip people! The theater actually pays them a livable wage so guests arent expected to tip. Plus the theater is eco-friendly and sustainable as well. I like that they go out of their way to support the community.

The vegan cheese isnt vegan, its actually caused an allergic reaction in my friend when we ate their food there whos allergic to dairy, when we were assured it was vegan.Also tables are sticky, bathrooms unclean, and the staff member Tia had an attitude with me over asking about it, treating me like i was dumb as my friend started itching and entirely dismissed us, and lo and behold we had to leave because their throat started closing up. that is a lawsuit waiting to happen

I rented out the New Parkway for my partners birthday party and it was incredible!! The staff was so accommodating, responsive, and helpful. It is such a fun unique and local spot. Great food and drinks as well!

What a wonderful place. New Parkway is my favorite movie theater by far. Super family oriented and warm, you really feel like at home, but better! They have couches and tables all over instead of regular seats, which makes it so unusual and great. But you can also buy food and drinks (good variety). They also have all kinds of events that I would love to go to. I have been only for movies and always enjoy myself so much. I love EVERYTHING about this theater.

It changes of traditional movie theaters. I really appreciate the atmosphere.The staff is really friendly. Some couches arent comfortable but you can always move to others! Some you would fall asleep in!!Foods great so are the drinks.Parking cant be a problem but I never had the issue.I hope to be back soon.

I enjoy coming to this theater. Decent food options. They show a great variety of movies. Only complaint is that there are a couple of employees who are rude. Today I called to ask if they were showing this movie at 225. I forgot the name of the movie so I just said the 225 movie. The person on the phone sounded very annoyed and said we dont have a 225 movie in a rude tone.After that I just said thanks and hung up. The movie was not 225, but 255. If the employer had any awareness or cared for their job, theyd just say there was a 255 movie.Its a high possibility that this employee was the same one who was rude to me in person. I wont say what happened to protect my identity, but they didnt need to be rude to me

I have conflicting feelings about the New Parkway. It comes down to the core question: “Why come to the movies?”You may be wondering: “What food is good here?” The answer: Literally nothing I’ve ever eaten here. Drinks are bad too.“Are the seats comfortable?” Not exactly. They are dilapidated couches.“Why come here then?”Honest answer - this movie theater has the best movie selection/offering I’ve found in the Bay. The people that run this place and the people that come are also fun and interesting. The tickets are also reasonably priced.If you want a comfy theater experience, go to Alamo Drafthouse in the city. If you want to seek unique movies with the local community, this is a must-visit. Vibes off the charts.

BEST ALTERNATIVE MOVIE THEATER!Instead of traditional concessions & seating, you get more of homie & community vibe. Their menu is quite impressive for the place (unfortunately I didn’t take a picture of it). That also includes the IPA’s they carry. They also have student discount! Just a million of comfortable furniture. Not only do they movies they host game nights.Side note - my family took me to watch the Rio Olympics 2016 final women’s soccer game! It’s been cool since day one

First time visitor and really satisfied. Clean, well run theater with food, Italian sodas wine and beer. Theater room is an amalgamation of sofas and chairs, some at tables, all comfortable. Good quality projection and sound system. More for a date or out with friends than for the fam. A nice break from AMC standardization.

Favorite place to see a movie, always. Love the Parkway, a bit funky, which I like, with great beer and drinks options and even better popcorn thanks to the toppings/spices bars they have in the lobby and each theatre. And having sofas instead of chairs is always nice. Havent had the entrees or other food yet but it always smells pretty good, and theyll bring it to your table (each sofa has a table).

This is a unique community minded theater that is located in Oaklands Uptown area. There are couches and comfortable chairs that you can hang out with your friends.They have comfort food and drinks (including alcoholic drinks) available at their cafe. They also have vegetarian and gluten-free choices. You can order and have it delivered in the show.Besides, new releases that you find that the movie chains, they have cult classics that are hard to find in a regular theater. They also have community events.The biggest issue in my mind is parking. It can be hard to find a parking spot on the street. Make sure to mot leave anything of value in your car. There is an expensive parking lot not far from the theater that is safer.Next time I go there, I will take pics

I really wanted to like this place. The staff is so nice. We waited over an hour for our food and our friends never got theirs at all. When they asked for a refund because the showing was *over*, they were told they had to keep waiting and take it to go. They then waited so long they eventually gave up and left!Maybe it’s a good movie experience? But definitely plan to eat elsewhere before or after.

Why did they have a line out the door and decide Ah yes, lets have this couple place orders for food in drinks in the specific this line is only for tickets, the two other lines are for food and drinks line?Really bad move by the asian girl working at the front, made me late to my film starting. And the white male with the mullet and mustache was rude when I asked them what pizza slices they had for the night. He just slapped an empty machine to the right that I didnt see and yelled We dont HAVE any!, then walked off. Busy night, sure, but yeesh.Just not great. Maybe 5 minutes into my movie, I decided to dip, because the service and more was all around really not great. The manager was sweet, even though she kept insisting on talking over me every time I spoke and had a scary massive eyes wide stare. Looked like her eyes were gonna pop up, but very sweet, said my ticket wasnt refundable but that I could use it on food instead. Alright, cool.Nice venue, the food was....... hmm. I dont know. But, service needs work.

One of the coolest movie theaters in Oakland. You can order beer, wine, shakes, soda, food, (love their chicken wings). Theres comfortable seating, couches, chairs, bean bags with little tables for your food and beverages. They play old and new movies, they even have game nights. Kid friendly. Sweet Oakland vibe. Theyre pro Green! And they sometimes help people in the community with food packages during some holidays.

I saw the Barbie movie here last night! It was great, lots of couches. My friends who drank got a big pitcher of cider and sangria, but I was able to get an italian soda that tasted delicious. My partner and I went to the New Parkway Theater to watch Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse. The movie was excellent, and the couches and ambiance in the theater was adorable.The food was some of the most shamefully terrible I have been given in my life. I dont expect fine dining in a movie theater. A greasy spoon is what I want! That being said, I have standards.We both ordered the Jalapeno Mac and Cheese. It was brought to us while the movie was playing, which was convenient. Unfortunately, the Mac and Cheese was awful. More accurately, it could have been called Mac. It was as though they had forgotten to put cheese in the dish. We debated if we should complain, but since we had not really eaten, my partner said something. After some discussion, the front of the house agreed to bring us cheese sauce to put in our dish.Several minutes later, the waiter dropped off the cheese sauce. It was as cold as the refrigerator it just came out of. This is unacceptable.It has never been this bad before. I have good memories of this place. What happened? I hope it was just a bad night.

This was one of the best movie going experiences I have ever had. The food here is amazing, so many vegan options that are all delicious. The price to proportion ratio is excellent. And the ambiance with the customer service experience was 5-star especially considering I went on a Friday night. This place is an absolute must, for a local intimate theater. Only thing that has nothing to do with theater is parking, it took me a while to find parking, but it was Friday night in Downtown Oakland. I will definitely be back soon Thanks.

A very unique and special place. My nephew had a gig going on there. He was a key speaker. The atmosphere there was on point. Really cool spot for upcoming young entrepreneur film producers up coming. First time inside there. A few of my yüts and I went to see a few films here( one week was Paris is burning which I highly recommend and the other was the Batman and robin with George Clooney and they had the nipples on the bat suit which was very comical) but I digress on the films; the atmosphere was bomb! It’s mad small In the front and they got all the proper snacks for a movie goer like it’s 2001! But they got them wavy couches out in the theaters and them thangs sitting cozy! You can tell some people be PLOPPING on the couch because they be sunken in a likkle. But once you locked in the love seat with your loved ones it’s a wrap! Best experience! You might see me lounging on a sofa with my kicks on! Holla!

Fried plantains are great too. Love the couches in theater 2. There used to be more couches in theater 1, but they were replaced by mostly office chairs. Pretty comfy, but not the same.

Went here with my kids for the Saturday morning Cereal Cinema. When I first heard about an open cereal bar, my skin crawled at the thought of random toddlers (and adults) reaching into boxes of Lucky Charms and pulling out marshmallows before picking an entirely different cereal. Not the case.The cereals were stored in easy to pour covered containers and labeled. The bowls and spoons were very clean with no soap residue. Everyone who was here was very considerate and respectful. The staff very friendly. Cloth napkins showed how green this place really is.Couches and chairs lined the rows with tables in front of them. It was like joining a bunch of friends and neighbors in one giant living room.At 10:30, classic cartoons spilled across the big screen and an instant warm, comfortable, nostalgic feeling overwhelmed me as I was taken back to my childhood. A time before cartoons 24/7 and episodes on demand. My kids and I had a great time, and we look forward to the next time we sit in that nice little time machine of New Park Theater!

A very socially-oriented theater, with seating around tables that make it easy to enjoy eating with friends while watching the movie. Outside of the theater room, there is also Karaoke. The food is in huge portions, making it a good deal. The garlic fries could use a bit more garlic, but it was still good, and it was a huge portion that I couldnt even finish.

Was walking around Oakland on a Saturday night looking for a bar and came across this place, with lawn chairs and people on blankets sitting in a closed outdoor terrace with a large screen up front. The host for the event Diem was so kind and welcoming even though we didn’t make a reservation online. We ended up grabbing some drinks from a nearby liquor store and coming back to watch the movie of the night. The employees who host the event are so nice and helpful, the bathrooms are clean, other audience members were quiet and respectful and the ambience of the place is really peaceful and community oriented. No issues with the movie set up as video and audio were perfect with no glitches. Thank you New Parkway Theater and I’ll definitely be back!

In general, lounge seating (couches, rocking chairs, bean bag chairs) options are good. There are rows of computer chairs (on wheels) that I personally didnt find appealing. I used to go to the old Parkway before the sofas moved in during the 2000s. I went to see Swamp Thing and some Kung Fu films at the old space (1980s).The New Parkway is an extension of the old Parkway in that it has coaches, sofas and chairs as seating options. Its very new Oakland in that its location is in whats considered KoHo (ie Korea Town) near Uptown a weird term used the last 20 years or so to describe the First Friday area of Telegraph Ave. In so being, stop at KP plaza for cheap Korean snacks and drinks to sneak in the theater, otherwise pay for popcorn, pizza and the like. They also serve booze. If you order food, youll receive a buzzer that alerts you when your food is ready. A server will bring it to your seat.Theres an upstairs area that hosts trivia nights, dungeons and dragons, and other fun stuff.The New Parkway fails in that it tries to be one million things besides a theater at the expense of its movies. Theyve crammed so much stuff in a tiny two theater space it comes off like some weird art collective that doesnt know how to do an art exhibition.Of the many times I seen films here, the adjacent films noise can be heard.Additionally the commercials and PSAs sometimes given in person take away from the movie experience and feels like a vain attempt to rekindle the old John Waters PSA - There is absolutely no smoking in this theater - that was shown before films at the very missed UC Theater which closed in 2000. Just looking at the scrawls one may see what the Bay Area has become - a lot of transplants from universities in Michigan of all places are represented on the chalk boards.With the closing of most Berkeley, SF theaters - many of the Landmark Cinemas chain - it blows that the New Parkway is oftentimes the only cinema to see some independent films alas with a noisy adjacent theater.

This place is a good movie theater, and a great community center. While this is a relatively negative review I dont want to take away what this place does really well. If youre coming for a movie and just a movie New Parkway is great. That said I think there is room for improvement on some things, first and foremost the line getting into the theater; we arrived at 6:15 for a 6:40 showing to get good seats, we were told that the doors open at 6:30 and too wait in the lobby till then. We ordered and sat on couches and waited. With no system to check when people arrived the line was soon out the door and people who had online tickets were able to get in-front of people who had been waiting. We were one of the first groups there but one of the last seated. This along with the fact that some seats in the theater have little to no view of the screen, makes it so that when people arrive and how they are seated is important. The other thing that was an inconvenience was the pizza we ordered, while others in our group had delicious food, the pizza was both burned and under-cooked. So ordering food here is hit or miss it seems. Those things said though, The popcorn was good and the drinks too. I like New Parkway and with some changes it would quickly become one of my favorite movie theaters in east bay.

We were somewhat worried about going out but they put our minds completely to easy while we were there (only interacted with one very friendly staff member). I was a big fan of the original Parkway on Park Blvd and their second location in El Cerrito. I was sad to hear about them shutting down back in 2009.With new ownership in 2012, the New Parkway opened in Uptown. Im happy to say that I contributed to their fundraising campaign because this place is overall a better theater experience.The concept of the Parkway is basically a small independently-owned theater that plays second-run movies while you sit on couches. They sell popcorn🍿just like any other theater but whats different about them is they serve full meals and alcohol.A big complaint of the original location was that their couches were dirty, which doesnt seem to be a problem here, fortunately. I was not able to attend the old parkway in this lifetime or universe, but the new one is incredibly fun and the staff is very accommodating. We saw David Lynchs lost highway here, used a group on, and were 10+ minutes late and were still welcomed warmly and treated like family you actually like. A true bay area gem! One of the best trivia nights, Saturday morning cartoons with a cereal buffet, themed nights, throw backs, reusable popcorn dishes, pitchers of beer, and fantastic company! Theres always something going on here and definitely worth checking out!

Food delicious. Service good. Bathrooms???? I’m used to gender neutral bathrooms, but one expects those to be single or family occupancy. Nope, not these. The signs on both doors say something like everyone is welcome. So I tried the one on the left first. Uhm... that one had all stalls and I was greeted by a few ladies so I pardoned myself and promptly vacated. Then I went to the door on the right. Once again I was greeted by a lady as she was washing her hands, and said she would be leaving soon. I politely waited and observed this bathroom had 3 urinals and one stall, so I quickly recognized that this bathroom was designed to be a men’s room. While I was standing rather still with my face towards the wall facing the urinal, another woman, a patron, came in and realized what became obvious, excused herself and embarrassedly exited.I’ll leave political inclinations aside and merely suggest more descriptive gender neutral signage such as “pee standing up” and “pee sitting down”. This only seems fitting. Until then, if you continue to give this theatre patronage, prepare yourself for mass bathroom confusion.

Great place to see movies that arent currently in mainstream theaters. More of a homie feel than most theaters. Food orders can take a while but still pretty tasty. Highly recommend if you live in Oakland or even if youre just visiting from SF or beyond!

Very cute and artsy movie theater. I love their unconventional seating in theaters (a hodge podge of different chairs and sofas) and their selection of films that they show. Big emphasis on reusable materials, bowls, cups, etc. Its always a joy coming here!

Enjoyed a movie with my dad on Fathers day. I would give five stars just for the kischness of it all, but the food was just ok and the seats were awful. Still had a blast... Visiting from out of town but would love to go again. Next time I am totally sitting on the huge bean bags instead of the lumpy couch.

Ive been here for movies and for their open mic event! The open mic was fun but the hosts talked for a lot of the time which kept performers from performing. Movies are fun the the seating is eclectic. Good food and beer is served!

Great community-minded local business. Charges the lowest ticket prices and pays the highest wages in the bay area. You can sit on couches or beanbags and order real food on real plates. Plus they have cartoons on saturday mornings with an all you can eat cereal bar.

Love the vibe at new parkway but not so much for trivia. The upstairs space (where Trivia takes place) is really small / awkwardly laid out for trivia, especially if you have 4 or more people. Definitely get there at least 15 mins early. I also just can’t believe how expensive their food is for what you get. $9 for fries and $19 for cheese pizza is just nuts. I know Oakland is gentrification-center but these prices are not justified.

Super disorganized theatre. Which door do you enter from? Which line for tickets? Which line for food? Which doors are the bathrooms? Once you get in the bathroom, which stalls are free?Our buzzer never buzzed and our food was just sitting at the counter. They don’t use paper napkins or towels, but there were no cloth napkins available. The staff had a loud meeting while we were there eating before our movie. Seats and tables are so close to each other in theatre. Chairs not that comfortable . The whole experience was like a confusing Fun House, but not that fun. Will not be going back.

On Fathers day the place was busy yet, the call our name almost exactly at the timeframe they gave us. Service was great and food was scrumptious. I only giving 4 out of 5 stars because at the bar, I ordered a bloody mary and the celery they put there as garnish was looking very old and almost brown. I mentioned it, but the bartender just turned arround and left... too bad! Almost perfect score...

I love it here. I have been to see two movies here and been a satisfied customer both times. It’s a funky vibe much different than the megaplexes . There is a community feel that is missing from a lot of movie theaters. They play good movies! As the for the food it’s hella good. I have had the Kung Pao Brussel sprouts and fried chicken sandwich. The service is good.

Appeal: Im a diehard fan of the old Parkway so I was thrilled to find out the new one opened up. Parking can be a little sketch, even though this part of Telegraph is gentrifying, just the other week, the owner of a bar in the area was nearly mugged at knifepoint in broad daylight and there are still break ins of cars. Parking is hard to find, so BART if you can.Facilities: Hipstery cheer with found objects. Inside, theres a succulent wall and the rear theater has nicer couches/furniture. The other theater (with upstairs and downstairs) has some issues with playing movies sometimes (at least for Purple Rain) and the tables and chairs set up downstairs are good for watching a basketball game, but maybe not so comfy for a full length film.Service: I still dont have quite the hang of the system that lets the servers find you but food generally comes out faster than it did at the old Parkway. Better menu options and beer on tap is always a good thing.

I have given The New Parkway and it’s crowd many chances to live up to the reputation spouted by the general public, but I do not go to the cinema to socialize.Films I’ve had ruined by this establishment:-A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night-Twin Peaks: Fire Walk w Me-The Florida Project-KrampusIf you ever want to see anything you’d like to pay attention to or feel any sort of brevity to the events happening on screen, avoid this place like the plague.The customer base is the pier one sort, wandered off the street squint eyed, looking to eat chicken salads w their clinking silverware and frequently turning to their party to too loudly whisper their interpretation or thoughts.I will spend the extra time and money to travel to the Alamo.This place sucks for the passionate filmgoer.

I loved the old parkway and the New Parkway has done a great job of paying homage while creating an experience that is all its own. Well done! Great flicks, locally sourced & sustainable practices for supplies, food, adult beverages, family friendly & community building events with a quirky decor all under one roof?... Cmon thats a win for sure. The biggest hurdle is parking, more like the lack thereof. The up side? Its close to BART and AC transit lines.
