2024-04-12 02:50:00Tldr; great food, great experience. Highly recommended. We were there for the spring 24 menu and chose to get the sommelier pairing with it.The paired wines brought out the flavors in each of the dishes in unexpected ways (Im not very familiar with wine but with how well this was done its impossible to miss). The biggest change was the Moscato with the lemon olive oil dessert. The cake was understated... until I took a sip of the Moscato and all the flavors popped (which surprisingly is not technically dessert wine but worked really well).I got the Porterhouse, not the fish option, so I can tell you the steak was delicious, but cant speak to the fish. The biggest surprise of the night was the Blue Crab Agnolloti. I could eat a bucket of those. You can see the presentation was great (for all the dishes not just the one in the pics).Look, this is a great meal and the price will reflect that, but it was worth every penny. Ive talked about the food already and hopefully got across that it was very good... but somehow the atmosphere of the place and the service were at least as good if not better. The wine cellar in the basement is where you start the night and it really sets the tone. Amazing wine options and a good whiskey selection (which is more my style) as well as some tasty charcuterie. The servers are professional, very knowledgeable, and pleasant. We even got to go back into the kitchen to meet the food wizards and get a peak behind the scenes. If you can swing the bill, I highly recommend it.

2024-05-31 05:45:23We didn’t have a chance to experience The Hobbit under its previous management. Its new owner, however, provides an absolutely stellar culinary experience and leaves little room for regret. The Hobbit clearly prioritizes quality and service above all else. The menu was varied — unpretentious, while still maintaining a creative edge. This isn’t easy to do. Everything tasted fresh, balanced, and each course was elevated by thoughtful wine pairings curated by Matthew, resident sommelier.Overall, this was a fantastic experience. Special mention: Andrew was marvellous and took very good care of us. We can’t wait to come back.

2024-05-02 15:54:47We were excited to return to The Hobbit after they recently reopened (under new management). Unfortunately, we left extremely disappointed. As we walked back to our car, one word came to mind about our experience: Dishonest. Dishonest, because we had this feeling like they had just sold us a $150 dining experience for $600. It was that feeling like we were just scammed. The Good: The Brie cheesecake was tasty. They could leave off the flavorless store bought strawberries, and it wouldve been even better. The wine pairings were interesting, boutique choices that were great discoveries. Someone put a lot of effort into finding some small producers with very good wines. The wine was working hard to elevate (cover for?) the food but at $75 a person, the pours were meager. The Bad: The food lacked soul and any depth of flavor. Nothing from the kitchen tasted like it was made with love. The appetizers looked as though they had been sitting out for a while, the lamb was tough, chewy and appeared undercooked. The beef course tasted cheap and was lukewarm (the butter didnt even melt on top) and the fish dish that we paid extra for was salty. The presentation was uninspiring, basic, and underwhelming. At this level, wouldn’t you expect the food to be memorable or even notable? The 45 minute intermission between the later courses was the lowest point of the night. Weird. The first two courses started the night with positive momentum and was building interest for the next dish. Then the lamb dish arrived. It was so bad, we didn’t finish it. The staff then announced a brief intermission. Sorbet was served as they prepared the main course. After waiting 45 minutes, any momentum they had was lost.Special mention to the service staff. They were engaging, knowledgeable, and tried very hard to make the best of what they presented from the kitchen. The Hobbit has been part of this community for a very long time. It’s sad to see a local establishment that we know, and have had great experiences, fail so miserably.

2024-05-02 23:49:56An iconic staple in Orange County, we went for the first time not knowing what to expect, would it be a timeless classic or older and outdated? We were beyond pleasantly pleased, recently remodeled with a stunning interior, it is a beautiful refresh of restoring historic charm with modern flare. The service, food and ambiance were all spectacular. The chef is a true artist, and paired with a phenomenal wine/cocktail selection, The Hobbit is a truly fine dining experience not to be missed.

2024-02-11 07:40:50What a delight to dine at a restaurant with Michelin aspirations without trekking to LA or suffering the puffery of the Newport crowd. The food is very good, the service earnest and attentive, the wine delightful and careful to avoid obvious labels. Truly a local spot to be proud of and support.

2022-09-07 15:23:36Have wanted to dine here for a number of years and finally had the opportunity. Its a super cute space - converted home that has a ton of charm but no central air. Im guessing thats not an issue most of the year, but on a 100 degree day, it was a serious problem. All of us were really uncomfortable the entire time with the possible exception of the time spent in the wine cellar which was cooler, but packed with the entire guest list for the evening. Super wine list if not a bit over priced.Pre dinner cocktails were excellent, although the bar was in a tiny room upstairs and there was a long wait for hand crafted cocktails. That is really a shame as I wouldve loved a second before dinner. Outstanding selection of spirits.Dinner was good but not out of this world. Plating was beautiful and service was very good. I was really disappointed with the beef wellington and wish Id opted for the fish option. Beef was fine, but just a let down for expectations.A couple of issues, beyond the uncomfortable temperatures in the building, that really stood out...Intermission, we were asked to leave the tables so they could do a re-set. Sounded great but we returned the the same soiled linens just re-folded, and soiled butter dishes and knives. Not the most egregious thing, but it still seemed pretty tacky.Another thing that stood out is they dont enforce the dress code. They are very adamant on their website about what is and what isnt acceptable/permissable, but there were a number of guests dressed in clothing that was supposedly unacceptable. Disappointing. The pricetag for dinner per person is pretty reasonable, but youre probably going to drop at LEAST $200 per person if you just have soft drinks. For an experience like that, I just feel a bit let down. I guarantee that I have higher expectations than most, so I would still recommend the place, but ultimately, its no 5 star experience. It is memorable, however, and for a special occasion would be a good choice.

2024-02-05 05:35:53My husband and I have been trying to get reservations for The Hobbit since November 2023. We are always looking for new places to enjoy delicious food. Our friends decided to check every day to jump on the chance of someone canceling. We were able to get a reservation in February 2024.The four of us walked in, and one of the staff greeted us and confirmed our name and number in our party. We were then directed downstairs to where we could enjoy a cocktail before dinner. A few minutes later, we were then directed to our table. My friends, my husband, and I chose to allow the staff to pair our wine with each course through the evening, ending with the perfect port with dessert. Each wine had a beautiful history coming from a different country, and the food was presented by our server in a way so that we could enjoy each wonderful bite knowing the detail that went into each dish.About half way through the evening, we were invited to meet the chef. I really enjoyed meeting him! He is an absolute genius!!The evening was a wonderful, memorable experience. I give the ambiance, service by staff, and amazing food, 10/5 stars! Thank you, Matt, for an AMAZING experience that my friends, my husband, and I will NEVER forget!
