Wow, the flavors at this restaurant are unreal! I think it all comes down to the quality of their ingredients. They have a really high-quality ingredients and the food tasted delicious. My breakfast plate had really good bacon, incredible potatoes, great eggs, and the sauce to go with it was just incredible! I don’t even know how they did it.the masala omelette was also extremely delicious. Their coffee latte was yummy as well. We got a handheld pastry sandwich, which was delicious, and they had this amazing lemon, walnut, streusel oat blueberry coffee cake. Seriously just an incredible experience and highly recommend going here!

The service was amazing, server patiently worked with us to explain the menu and find what we like, food was tasting very good with creative presentation and unique taste combinations, will be back here. Our first trial of Burmese food and loved it, Only thing Patio needs some work and it is directly on the sidewalk and people hit your chair.

One of the best eateries in Ventura County. First off the service is AMAZING. from the moment we walked into the rear bar and had cocktails to our appetizers, wine, and main dishes, each course brought us a new unique taste. From the Puri liver mouse to the Casitas duck, each course was amazing. We went thru a lot of the menu between the 4 of us as we really wanted to experience as much as we could at this phenomenal restaurant. Thanks to the attentive and knowledgeable staff this was a dinner we will not soon forget!!

This is hands down the best food Ive had in all of Ventura County, and Ive lived here on and off for 19 years.Burmese is one of my favorite cuisines, and their execution was basically flawless for both the Burmese and other French tradition foods.We got dinner--the crispy rice salad, naan, fish tikka masala, and the falooda dessert.We were so impressed we came back the next morning, where we got 6+ pastries, as well as the waffles and Burmese fried chicken sandwich.ALL WERE SUPERB.I cant wait to go back here again.The only caveat is that everyone else knows how good it is, so you have to wait in line 💁🏾‍♂️

We went to The Dutchess for both lunch and dinner. The transformation is quite astounding. At lunch it is counter service with delivery to your table. We really enjoyed the Burmese fried chicken sandwich but found the pastrami in the pastrami sandwich kind of tough. They stop serving at 2pm and convert to a full service Burmese inspired restaurant. We ordered almost the entire menu and found the flavors to be quite complex and utterly delicious. Our favorites were the crispy rice salad, the goat (very much recommended) and the tandoori chicken. Really everything was delicious and the service was quite gracious and on pace. While in Ojai, a visit to The Dutchess is a must.

My wife and I came here the other night for our anniversary dinner. We called ahead and had a reservation so that we could easily walk in and grab a seat. You immediately walk into the bar and it was a little loud for me there. We were taken towards the back where there was a quiet room where we were able to have a dinner together.We started off with the fried potatoes, and those were super good. In hindsight, though, I don’t think we needed them as a part of our meal. Next we got the crispy rice salad, and the dish was significantly larger than I thought it was gonna be.For our entrées, we ordered the pork belly noodles and the beef masala. Both of those were excellent.Finally for dessert, we ordered this pie that was like an ice cream pie with passionfruit topping and then we ordered some other tart dish. I would suggest going with the passionfruit pie for sure, and I would also look at the float that they had that’s made with pistachio milk.Overall this place was phenomenal. Our service was amazing. The location was clean, the staff was friendly, and the portions were larger than I thought for the price.

Dutchess is a must-visit cafe in Ojai! We tried the Matcha, Cafe Au Lait, cupcake, and vegan chocolate chunk cookie. Everything was amazing! Really excellent coffee and the matcha was delicious. Highly recommend their homemade almond milk! The baked goods were a highlight and I’ve never had such a good vegan cookie.

First time in Ojai for a wedding. The spicy pickled goat cheese scone is absolutely effing divine. Like Yelp worthy divine. Try it with tomato chutney and some chili sauce. The line at this place is long on the weekend but Id stand in again in a heartbeat to have one of these.

Absolutely delicious dinner!! Every dish was carefully crafted with fresh ingredients and layers of herbs and spices. So unique and flavorful!! Wonderful brunch experience. Even though the line to order went out the door, it moves fast, and there is a ton of seating inside. Great coffee drinks, and a fun menu with a Burmese twist, including house-made gluten-free pastry options. I had the Big Breakfast Plate -- excellent. All the servers were kind, helpful and polite. Highly recommended.

This was an excellent dining experience. The food was good, the service was excellent and friendly, and the atmosphere and ambiance was stellar. It was a very laid back palace that also happens to host private events. They also have a bakery with bread that looks delicious, but I didnt try it so I cant say. The desert I got was phenomenal, it truly was an experience to savor every bit in my mouth. The Naan bread was mouth watering was well. I recommend this place for anyone stopping by Ojai!

Beautiful spot! Head to the very back for a private bar area with more seating plus a pool table. Drinks were great! Kudos to Adrian who crafted all our drinks and even experimented with a few that turned out amazing! Food was yummy! The potatoes and their dipping sauce were our favorite! Since it was my first time visiting in California, my partner convinced me to go here telling me it was the best place on Earth: well, he was right!!The baked goods are homemade and absolutely delicious. This bakery gets busy QUICK, at about 9 AM in the morning! So if you are wanting a quick coffee or baked goods moment before work or wherever you are headed, I would come before 9 AM. (It gets busy for a reason!)We sat outside at one of the coffee tables and had a great view of Ojai. We were waited efficiently by our waitress and the service was top-notch.

This place is a must go. Very friendly service, cautious with food allergies + open a bit later than other places (kitchen closes at 9:15pm).But the most important part : its a true delish. Savory, tasty, creative and delightful. Do not miss this place !We went for dinner and had the tea leaf salad, coconut chickpea curry, a naan and a mango lime pie to share with my partner. Everything was amazing.The next morning we had a croissant and chocolate cookie (with sea salt 😋), it was so yummy and being French I can attest the croissant was a really good one.NB : youll notice on the pics that the food is already half eaten... it was so beautiful and good that we rushed on it and totally forgot to take pictures before 🤦🏻‍♀️

I stopped in last Friday for baked goods for the office and was blown away with the excellent service and delicious bakery goods.Dinner tonight was incredible. I had the kiss me cocktail and would highly recommend it. The tandoori chicken was also scrumptious. Our server Kimmy... wonderful! Some of the best food Ive had. Made with a lot of love. We ordered a little bit of everything (pastries, entrees, coffee). I got the Burmese-styled fried chicken sandwich. It was a culinary masterpiece. It was a toasted bun that tasted like it was baked in the back by an artisanal baker, and it probably was. There was a lemongrass flavor to the fried chicken that worked really well with the Asian-styled coleslaw and even down to the sesame seeds on top of the bread, which eaten all together were like the sesame seeds you would get atop sushi rice or a cucumber salad. I was thoroughly impressed.My wife got a vegan chickpea, white rice bowl with cilantro and I wish I could remember the menu name because it was so light and refreshing. It tasted like a kiss on a spring morning. So good.Then we got coffee and fresh baked sweets. A matcha shortbread cookie with cacao nibs on top, a coconut macaroon, and a vegan pomegranate cake. The espresso shot was well-poured and each dessert was to die for.Beautiful setting and interior design! Friendly service and amazing food. Hard to find a downside other than they are located way out in Ojai and I cant go more often.

It has been 1 year I wanted to try this place and I was very disappointed. They forget the beef masala. The waiter finally came with the dish when our table was clean. The biryani lamb was full of rice with only like 100g of meet. The chicken liver and the side veggie were very good. The temperature was very cold outside, and more heaters will be highly appreciated. We had to eat with our coat.

The best goat (in masala form) I’ve ever had in my life!!! Our waitress Melina was so kind and patient with us and offered amazing recommendations. We got the tea leaf salad, chickpea fritters, goat masala special, and passionfruit lassi pie for the two of us and were STUFFED by the end of the meal. One of the top 5 meals Ive had in my life. We ordered the crudite plate, which I honestly thought it would be boring, but they even elevated raw, crisp vegetables with creamy yogurt and chili paste. We followed that with the tea leaf salad, lamb biriyani, roasted squash curry, and the chocolate tart for dessert. Every flavour was well rounded, balanced but an explosion in your mouth. The staff was delightful (the waitress even brought the chef to the table so I could compliment him personally). The best part was that even though we kept eating even after reaching satiety, by the time we got home, we werent overfull. I think the spices they use are digestifs, and even help reinforce the experience. If I come back to this part of the world, Ill definitely be back!

Love their coffee. Decided to have their breakfast …. Bacons were partially cooked … eggs were cold. Potatoes too greasy . Salad was over saturated with dressing …. Fried chicken sandwich was burned greasy and didn’t even look like chicken Breast. Very disappointed for the amount of money they charged … services was slow or they forgot about our table, altogether… I hope they bring an experience chef who knows what he is doing… just loved the coffee. They get so much business by all these tourists; would be nice they care … I’ll be back in Ojia again but definitely not going there .

We started with the naan and big eye tuna tartare. Both were very good. And thats where the meal peaked then fell off. We ordered the coconut chicken noodles, expecting a noodle dish and received a ramen. It was under seasoned and bland. We also ordered the grass fed beef masala. This had no flavor at all. I felt like I was eating in a hospital cafeteria. No spice, no seasoning, no development of flavor. Bland, bland, bland. And the portion of rice was abysmally small. Honestly, it felt like pretentious white-washed food served to appease the LA hipsters. Would not recommend. We were left with a $150 bill and immediately went to In-N-Out because we were still hungry.

Pastries and coffee are excellent! Not cheap but what you can pay for good quality these days. I couldnt believe how packed the place was, all morning (over 2 hours), on a Friday. The service to order is quite slow due to how many people, but the staff are very friendly. LOVED that the lady taking the coffee order for drip coffee was clear there was free refills, just ask. Nice touch to avoid an awkward situation. Would definitely recommend The Dutchess for a pastry & breakfast, just beware finding a good table may be hard and you may wait a little while, but its worth it.

What can i say about this beautiful, restaurant. Ive been in more than a couple times, brought friends, co workers, its my first suggestion to go when asked, where to eat. Not only is the food truly delicious, you can taste the care in each dish. They have away of bringing out the food you choose, to mask the intergrity of each dish, to the palette. Like a symphony. When you walk in you feel like youre in another world, the staff are kind, even when busy. The buzz in the restaurant is amazing, its a wrap around concept, so the first you see is the bar, around the corner is more seating, then you enter another place with another bar, and pool table. Then theres the outside seating, when you take a step out there its absolutely stunning. With lights and lanterns, the trees. Its like youre in fairy tale. I hope you go to enjoy the fresh ingredients they use, and the unique twist that they deliver. They are open from 7am to 4pm everyday for breakfast pastries, sandwhiches, fresh bread. And it gets busy. today was my first time going in the morning. Wow. It was packed, a line out the door. When i got in i felt like kid in a candy store, drooling from all the delights, you fancy. You can tell they take pride in what they bake, from the tastes, the smell.Evening hours are 430 to 930pm. Anytime you go, i promise you, you will not be disappointed, and will be back for more!!!! The dinner we had here a few years back was really good, and we had really nice service. However, what I come back for every day when I visit Ojai now are the morning pastries and coffee. Everything is so good and the service is nice and casual. I have had so many delightful pastries here! Chocolate croissant, ham and cheese croissant, passion fruit danish, cinnamon roll, cheddar scone are all favorites.

Excellent food and beautiful decor. Get there earlier in the evening rather than later to be sure they don’t run out of their Biryani. We had a reservation at 7:45 pm and were told they had run out. We chose The Dutchess for a birthday dinner and with 4 adults & 1 small child we were walked through the beautiful, ambience-filled restaurant to our table in the less atmospheric outdoors area, doors closed to keep the diners inside warm.The servers were friendly but not attentive and each of our dishes, ordered for sharing, as the restaurant suggests, came quite some apart from each other. So instead of a table full of wonderful dishes, we shared one dish (small) before waiting for the next. Not quite the experience you see in the photos or on Instagram. We settled for a single round of drinks as we were not asked once if we’d like to order more. Odd.My impression is the outdoor dining area is somewhat neglected and undertrained staff are busy elsewhere. The 3% charge to cover cost-free healthcare for staff .. if you pride yourself on such a virtue, ensure the service and dining experience is exceptional. There are other restaurants to visit in Ojai, we’ll choose them next time we’re in town.

Amazing service and food.This is a unique place that is a Bistro Cafe for breakfast/lunch, and then transforms into a Bar/Burmese fine dining restaurant.We made a mistake of reading general Google reviews about their Burmese food and went for some Burmese lunch. Obviously we were disappointed 😁, but then decided to try their Burmese dinner. Jackpot!😀We weren’t terribly hungry, so shared an entrée and a dessert.The ‘Goat Masala with Naan’ was one of the best we had (including some good Indian restaurants in USA).The Strawberry Geranium Kulfi was heavenly with flavors of rose water, strawberries mingled with creamy cold Kulfi (Indian style ice cream). Sharing it was a little difficult, both practically and because it was so good.😂Had a pleasure of meeting Chef Saw and learned that some of his recipes are adapted from his grandmother’s cooking in Burma. That absolutely made our day, because I enjoy my grandmother’s recipes from my childhood and the fond memories associated with them.Thank you Chef Saw for sharing your cherished memories!

This place alone is worth the drive from LA to Ojai.A gorgeous eatery in the middle of downtown Ojai, The Dutchess welcomes you with open arms to its beautifully lit and meticulously decorated atmosphere. THE FOOD (Im just going to jump to it) IS INCREDIBLE. The naan was to die for; the mussels were divine; The Pork Belly noodles had to have been my favorite... I mean, the glaze was impeccable; cant go wrong with the curry; but the Goat Masala IS A MUST. Oh- and dont pass up on dessert. The Lime Pie was incredible, but you HAVE to get the Brulee Pie and the Sticky Rice Donuts. Youll thank me later.

Wow! Has entered our pantheon of favorite restaurants. We were floored by how good this was. We had a wonderful dinner experience dining at the Dutches. We sat in the charming middle dinning room near the original “Dutchess”oven in the brick wall. The staff was friendly and explained all the options on the menu. Our waiter provided excellent service through out the evening. We shared the Biriyani lamb pie and golden egg curry with a side of naan and garlic ghee. For dessert we had coconut crème brûlée. It was all cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. I can not wait to return and try the other dishes on the menu. They have many GF and vegetarian options on the menu. Highly recommend driving out to Ojai to enjoy this restuarant in the morning for pastries and coffee.

Unfortunately, since the electrical fire that shut down Rory’s, this seriously overhyped restaurant qualifies as “fine dining” in Ojai. The service is miserable, the food decidedly mediocre, and the prices laughable. Can’t wait for Rory’s to reopen.In the meantime, try the excellence FullMoon Ishikaya across the street and the ever-inventive Pinyon one block away.

Great new addition to Ojai that’s both a restaurant and a bakery. The bakery is great and the pastry items are amazing, although expensive. They also have great coffee including decaf drip, which is rare. The restaurant in the evening has a Burmese menu and excellent cocktails. It’s family style, although none of the entrees are too big for one person except maybe the chicken. Highly recommend saving room for a dessert cocktail. They also have a cute patio out back and a billiards table in the back room.

The prices are outrageous, they then charge a 3% surcharge for healthcare. The space is much bigger than it seems from the front, as it extends down the right side and has a lot of charming seating along the way and in the back of the building. Lovely decor, kind staff, and incredible pastries. Everything was fantastic and we can’t wait to go again. When you go, it’s good to know that you order at the front counter and take a number to your table. I love that they use ingredients from local farms.However, I am giving 3 stars for the following reasons:The Service: My friend and I walked in one day, and there were a bunch of staff members walking around who saw us but ignored us while we stood around wondering if someone would greet us. It was so awkward. Finally, we approached the bartender who advised us that they are only serving alcohol right now and that dinner will be served at a later time. We wanted a meal so we ended up going to another restaurant.The Food: The next evening, I returned to the restaurant and ordered the biryani. They bake it covered in a puff pastry which is very creative. However, if I had to be picky, for $32, the rice was slightly under cooked. I have a feeling that the puff pastry absorbs some of the moisture from the rice while baking, or, maybe that is just the way they want their rice. It is a nice idea, but the final outcome is a rice that is a little too al dente.Additional Charge: You will be charged an additional 3% to your bill for employee health care. I would rather they increase the price of the food than reveal their lack of accounting skills. It is an insult to their patrons. They should also then charge a toilet fee, a water fee, an electricity fee, and a liability insurance fee. Should we also pay an alcohol license fee? A smarter marketing concept would be to increase the food prices a bit and then print in the menus that by eating here, their patrons are providing health care for their employees. Starbucks does not itemize a health insurance fee. What we pay when we buy food is payment for all of their expenses. I come to a restaurant to purchase food and service - not health insurance.

I don’t consider kimchi fried rice to be a great accompaniment to steak, but even if it was, make it a great fried rice and a great steak. This was neither. Why not separate the two? Make a killer fried rice as one dish and a great steak as the other? Tea leaf salad and naan were fine, I’ve had better. I get the feeling a lot of folks oohing and aahing over this haven’t really eaten around much.Desserts were cloyingly sweet, the pie being unpleasantly cold, like fresh out of the freezer, so that biting in just gave a terrible icy texture mouthfeel. I’ve enjoyed pastries from Huckleberry so this was a letdown.Wine list is good, filled with many producers you won’t find elsewhere in Ventura County but at exorbitant markups, even by LA standards. In the European countryside you can pay slightly over retail (sometimes less!) for great bottles. In California countryside it’s 4x apparently.What Ojai needs and deserves is a Chez Panisse or Zuni cafe to highlight all the great ingredients available locally, cooked very simply but with a keen attention to detail, accompanied by a killer wine list that’s priced attractively to enthusiasts. We love all of the Rustic Canyon Groups restaurants and this is right up there with the best! The building itself used to be a bakery so they are famous for baking. Thus the Naan is incredible. I had such high hopes for dinner at the Duchess, unfortunately it was a disaster. We had 5:45 reservations because we were going to Libbey Bowl for a concert, we informed the staff that we had to leave by 7. We were seated outside next to the very busy and loud road. Our meals was delivered every 1/2 hour. So 1 person at time ate while the other 3 watched. The last meal arrived at 7:00 pm. The food was imaginative but the service was inexcusable.

We had dinner at the Dutchess last night. The space is warm and well designed, the people were friendly and helpful. Despite having just opened, they seemed relaxed and knowledgeable. This is not “fast food” but the modest wait for our entrees left us time to enjoy the back porch and do a little people watching. We came back for the pastries this morning and were blown away. Try the Fat Uncle almond croissant but don’t tell anyone else…

Bad service. Definitely dont go if you have food allergies or any dietary restrictions!I had to ask several times and to different servers which items on the menu were nut-free. First, they ignored my request, and after insisting several times one of them confirmed that the curry only had the ingredients listed on the menu... when I finally got it I saw that it had some more ingredients so I couldnt eat it.Also, they didn´t inform us that the menu was supposed to be shared until we had already ordered.On the bright side, good drinks, beautiful décor and nice atmosphere.

I didnt have any problem with the waitresses, but the manager was very rude to me. She talked to me as if she was superior and looked down on me. She acted like she was better than me and that made me feel unwelcome. I will never go back there again because of her attitude.

The worst pastrami sandwich I’ve ever had. The pastrami was 90% fat. The toasted bread was drenched in butter. Almost no sauerkraut on the sandwich. All of this for $18.50. Avoid this place.

The Tea Leaf salad, Chickpea tofu and the Biryani were delicious. Better still, the staff was exceptionally kind. Stranded at 10:30pm and unable to order an Uber a 10-minute drive away to our Airbnb one of the staff members was kind enough to personally drive us home. Cant wait to come back!

Adorable little cafe with tons of baked goods and good coffee. I went for breakfast and the coffee was good but some of the breakfast items were questionable. I got the frittata and I’m sure the frittata would have been better warmed up but it was an average frittata with potatoes and vegetables cold. The pico de gallo that came with the frittata was also very garlicky. The olive oil citrus cake I had after was delicious though. The ambiance of the cafe itself is nice though.

Walked up to the host stand and had a really weird interaction with the host. She looked at us almost as if she didn’t want to seat us. When we were finally sat we waited for about thirty minutes until we decided to walk out. Our server literally looked at us as we were getting up to leave, then decided to get back to her conversation with her other table. Service was very unfriendly, would recommend to skip this place. Way better options in Ojai.

Absolutely an original experience is the only way I can explain this place. Classy beautiful atmosphere that flows naturally, draws everyone’s attention to their displays filled with gourmet pastry masterpieces, and a frittata to die for. And don’t get me started about their coffee… best ever PERIOD. I’ve traveled the world and to find my ‘best’ coffee in Ojai California is hard for me to fathom lol. Ojai is a wonderful town and The Dutchess just adds to another of many reasons to come visit. The Dutchess is worth the detour off of the PCH, and I’m saying this as someone who hates to get off my path. I promise, you won’t regret it.
