Within three days, our group had created complete stories in video format — our group that included people who felt like they werent storytellers, people who felt like they werent great with technology, people with a tiny seed of an idea and people with big, sprawling ideas. Rob and Allison guided us through the process, coaxing stories out of the most reticent and providing thoughtful guidance for the more experienced. They made video editing approachable, both by demonstrating the technology in a clear manner, providing assistance, and also by setting achievable goals for the finished projects. Our team enjoyed the workshop and were excited to use the videos to tell our organizations stories.

That started with virtual session to the very last part of the workshop that was held in Morocco. Really loved the progress seen throughout the workshop for myself and fellow trainees. StoryCenter is so very supportive & encouraging. I had been looking for a hands-on experience for a long time. It really was the perfect match & timing! Ive taken workshops with StoryCenter twice, and both times have been an absolute joy! A colleague and I took their podcasting workshop in 2022 to learn how to develop a podcast for our small nonprofit organization working with Indigenous and endangered languages. We loved it so much that we worked with StoryCenter to host a podcasting workshop for Indigenous language activists, to share stories about their communities, languages, and language revitalization work. It was A HIT.I cannot say enough good things about Trauman and Mary Ann as teachers. Their patience, warmth, humor, enormous skill at facilitating discussions and sharing of experiences, and deep expertise in digital storytelling shine through in every session. Everyone learned so much - but also, they bonded as a group, and told us they felt really comfortable and safe in the workshop.For lack of a better way to put it, the VIBES in StoryCenter workshops are off-the-charts good. These folks really know how to create a space where people feel safe, listened to, empowered to tell their own stories, and never rushed or stressed, even when learning complicated technical tools.The podcast segments that my colleagues produced in this workshop are just incredible - I am stunned at their quality and beauty, even from folks whod never done any podcasting before. The skills and tools youll get from a StoryCenter workshop are amazing, and you can carry them with you in whatever work you do afterwards.I cant recommend these folks enough - if you are lucky enough to have a chance to learn from them, do it! I loved learning from Trauman in the Podcast Storytelling workshop. It is like taking a course from your favorite professor without the stress of getting graded! I enjoyed learning from the other aspiring podcasters and sharing the learning journey with them. I came into the course not sure what I wanted out of it except to learn some skills. I leave the course really interested in developing my podcast storytelling craft. If you have any interest in exploring podcasting and telling inspiriting stories, this is the course for you!

I had the pleasure of telling my birthing story during a 4-week session. The sessions with StoryCenter and VNPC were amazing. Just hearing from other fierce women, being heard by Allison Myers and April Bell, and also seeing how my story started to how it all came together in a beautiful video was life changing! I recommend anyone who has a story to tell or anyone who thinks that their story isnt important to attend a workshop because you will be surprised and inspired, I know I was.

I was able to work with Story Center on creating a maternal health related project. It was a really amazing process and was extremely healing. I participated a 8-week long workshop on creating a segment about endangered language stories. It was absolutely amazing. We learned so much Trauman about storytelling techniques as well as audit editing using Audacity. What amazed me was Trauman and Marys patience and careful explanation of every step to make sure we were all following. My colleague and I took the Podcast Storytelling workshop and it was so worth it! We are complete beginners to podcasting, and learned so much, both about storytelling and also enough technical skills to create a podcast. Storycenter led a podcasting workshop for us, that was supported by US State Department. Our mentors, Allison and Trauman created an amazing 6 week program that was designed with student learning system and a virtual interactive ecosystem that was truly enjoyable and engaging. Podcasting is something I had no experience with and Storycenter really helped me learn everything possible and gave me a strong agency to explore more options in podcast creation. In a fast paced world surrounded by environmental, religious and political intolerances, storytelling spaces are such a powerful platform to build meaningful relationships with each other, and the natural world. Thank you to the staff, interns and volunteers at StoryCenter for working so hard to create such spaces.I have had the opportunity to be a student in a digital storytelling workshop organized by StoryCenter and highly recommend their offerings. I was guided throughout the process with so much care, thoughtfulness, kindness and respect, and the staff really go out of their way to make sure your story is ready in a way you feel most comfortable. StoryCenter is not only a place where you learn to put together a video story using your own voice and pictures/video and so forth, but they work with different organizations to pull people together where you can feel safe and find strength in each other to give each individual confidence to share the personal details of their life experiences. I think that storytelling is a great tool that will enhance student and teacher relationship. The workshop provided me with skills for creation of my digital story. I plan to transfer these skills to my students. It is all about students!I see storytelling as a unique tactic to break the ice by allowing students an opportunity to tell their stories digitally.The Story Center workshop facilitators were professional and personable. This was my second time under instruction from StoryCenter. This time it was for the podcast workshop. I admit I knew nothing going into this workshop except that I needed to do this. The material is really easy to follow. Trauman is really a Godsend when it comes to facilitating. He listens. He understands. He is prepared. He has solutions. He has the time to work out the kinks with you. Im sad that our time in the virtual classroom has ended but I look forward to getting as much education from StoryCenter as possible. I took an eight-week Podcast Storytelling Workshop with Story Center in March-April 2022 and learnt a lot about what the work implies. Truman and Harley, our instructors, made great presentations, answered all the questions and offered productive insight on podcasting. All the material is already part of the foundation of my work as I move into a project to tell the story of the Latino community in Northern California. This 2 week course was so interesting, with plenty of valuable information provided as part of the course and through interaction with fellow teachers. It was an awesome experience for me in improving, especially my teaching skills to a new paradigm, by adding storytelling, writing exercises, storyboarding, and technology. On my plate for retirement are a couple of projects that tell some of my story and the story of a group Ive been involved with for about 45 years. Legacy projects. Stories for another generation. I absolutely believe in the value of these projects but needed some inspiration, direction, and technical know how to helpi me move these forward. I stumbled on the Online. Podcast Storytelling Workshop and decided, not without some fear and trembling, to sign up. The Online format was perfect for COVID times and did not require travel.It was great. The instructors were top notch and supportive. The instructional materials were spot on. The classes were great, small group breakouts very positive, and the end products, our podcast segments something to be proud of. StoryCenter has been an amazing partner to Asian Womens Shelter, and to the many storytellers and co-project leaders over the last 15+ years. Amy Hills knowledge of gender-based violence and trauma, survivor-centeredness, digital story script and overall development, technology, team building, and confidentiality is central to our success making stories in at least ten languages. Storytellers have had moving and empowering experiences, and stories are being ethically used in training curricula, case management, fundraising, presentations, staff onboarding, and more. Our participants have been diverse in terms of race and ethnicity, English proficiency, tech experience, formal education background, sexual orientation, age, and more. StoryCenter is an amazing, unique resource.

Our community has held 4 storytelling workshops (and 3 virtual public viewing events) over the past one and a half years as part of an effort to highlight the diversity and inequalities in our community as a path toward advocacy and positive change. Each workshop has been an incredible, life-changing experience for the participants, some of whom shared very intense personal life challenges in these safe and supportive workshops. The public viewing events have created a local buzz and more vocal proponents of various highlighted issues revealed in the stories (affordable housing for one!). I cannot say enough about the highly skilled and compassionate facilitators we had. Mary Ann McNair is a calm force that everyone loves. She helps people navigate their stories and emotions to create an impactful and enlightening video. The facilitators from the StoryCenter used the workshops to help the participants identify their unique story and then how to tell it with audio and visual effects. I felt empowered by the friendship and feedback from other survivors and thrivors as we shared our stories. My own creativity soared as I learned to trust the reader/audience to make the implied connections. This has been a transformative experience!

Ive just completed a podcast storytelling workshop and it was a really satisfying experience. I learnt a lot from the facilitators, who were very experienced and extremely patient and encouraging. It was overall a very nurturing space and the course provided a good grounding in what it takes to produce a podcast.

Im very grateful to the US Consulate, Kolkata, for inviting me to take part in StoryCenters workshop, Imagine Another World, that centred on developing and sharing stories about life during the Covid-19 pandemic. Its a tricky balance to strike when facilitating workshops where personal stories will be shared and the facilitator, Amy Hill, was exceptional in creating an empathetic space and also offering feedback and suggestions about crafting our stories. As a result, writing and sharing my story was both cathartic, an uninhibited assertion of myself as well as artistically extremely satisfying. Im a writer who over time may nitpick about past pieces. But its been close to a year and theres nothing Id change about the story I wrote in their workshop. I think thats a testament to StoryCenter and Amys ability to make writing an experience thats respectful of vulnerability and, simultaneously, unobtrusively, not compromise on technique. Its a holistic process and thats what made it so fulfilling for me.

If you ever get the opportunity to work with Story Center to tell your story I highly recommend doing it. It was an experience I won’t forget.Take the time to listen to stories created by Story Center. Very powerful stories told about real life experiences.

The support in all things technical (plus their genuine enthusiasm and patience as we tried to learn the how tos of the new tech world order) were the best.
