The bike service I received was excellent! Expert advice, quick service, cost savings as a Basementeer; all my concerns embarking on the AlC ride were taken care of quickly! Went there right before an overnighter trip to Yosemite. I snatched a Western Mountaineering 10° sleeping bag and browsed the rest of the store. Nice little store, former ice rink, I believe.Staff was friendly and the store was well stocked. I prefer to go here over the other outdoor store. Plenty of free parking. Will be back for more backpacking items.

I love Sports Basement! I rented ski equipment for my son and myself this year and it was super convenient and affordable. Amazing store in Berkeley! Such a cool vibe in an old skating rink. A great selection of outdoor clothing and sports clothing, with a huge running shoe selection (all the best brands daily trainers and racing shoes). A big plus is the pre loved section upstairs where I found a running top for $4! We spent over an hour in this store and lots of members of staff helped us find the things we needed

Visited Sports Basement in Berkeley on a Wednesday and I have to say, I was pretty impressed. The staff here are not just friendly, but also super attentive. They seem genuinely interested in helping you find what youre looking for.The membership is a great deal and quite affordable. It comes with some awesome in-store discounts. But even if youre not a member, the store offers periodic discounts that anyone can take advantage of. So, member or not, you can find ways to save.The layout is organized well with clearly marked sections, although I think they could showcase the brands a bit more effectively. Its a minor quibble in an otherwise well-organized store.I went in to pick up a rental and the process was smooth as butter. No hiccups, no confusion. Ill possibly update this review when I return the rental, but honestly, I dont expect the experience to go downhill.Prices across the board are pretty standard, but when you factor in the discounts, especially for members, it becomes a very affordable option for sporting goods.In summary, if youre in Berkeley and need sporting goods or rentals, Sports Basement should be on your list. Great staff, good pricing with discounts, and a smooth rental experience. What more could you ask for?

Overall things went well. I was looking for new shoes. I tried on the shoes the employee initially brought me, but after 15 minutes or so of not seeing him again, i needed to track him down to get some more assistance. Otherwise, no issues. Purchased the shoes and will return in the future. I’m a happy customer.

Sport Basement is one of my favorite Bay Area institutions. They run deals that help you when you need it... snow deals during ski season and camping deals leading up to Memorial Day. Love the local community support and being able to socialize my dog in the dog-friendly stores. I dislike shopping in person; Sports Basement is one of the exceptions.

One of the few places in the Bay Area with great snow sport selection. Do not skip out on Snowfest for great deals. This year I was able to pick up a new set of bindings from the Berkeley location and a snowboard from the Redwood City location. Do not hesitate to shop here. Showroom floor may be a little chaotic but it adds to the basement vibe. My experience with the snow section has always been positive. Staff always knowledgeable with their recommendations. In total I have about 3 snowboards, 2 sets of boots, 3 pairs of bindings and countless amount of clothing over the years. Become a member and start saving 10% on all purchases, even works online. 10% of proceeds also gets donated to local charity’s and organizations.

Had to get snowboarding gear and was helped in depth of every step of the way. Brandon was a great help, giving advice on whats good and going in dept on what each part does. Came back for a refit and he again happily helped and got me everything I needed in order to make the boot not only perfectly fit, but helped making sure it really was perfect so we wouldnt have to come back again. Would trust that Brandon would have my back if I ever came back and needed anything.

On a Thursday at 230 pm. Took 15 minutes to find someone to help. This is just for context, I didn’t mind the wait. Brought a bag I also just bought at container store to compare with another brand. I get to the cash register And I tell the guy that one is a purchase and one I brought in. He gives me an exasperated look, disappointed like we’ve had this conversation a million times and asks me if I could please check in with a staff member first next time (note: there were no signs indicating this at the entrance) I let him know that I’m sorry but there wasn’t any staff available and I didn’t know. He looks further annoyed and responds “ ok well next time just check in”. I then again apologize and let him know I have my receipt on me and I can totally show him, he said “ that’s not what I said is it? Next time check in with a staff member.” My apologies for continuing on the subject, but it felt like I was being reprimanded. Either semi accused of stealing or like I was doing something obviously wrong.I used to work in the SB in Sunnyvale until last year and have friends in the San Ramon location and at my time there that was not a rule so this isn’t some obvious chain wide ruleIf this is an expectation now or please put a sign at the door or have someone checking bags.Leaving a 5 star because I love sports basement, but I’ve never had such a negative interaction at a store.

I rented a ski set from sports basement in Berkeley and had THE BEST FIT in a ski boot that Ive ever had!! I had so many questions and issues to tell the person helping me about, and she was so patient and helped me get a better fit than Ive ever had (I usually experience extensive shin bruising and pain). The team at Sports Basement is amazing! I came in to have my skis waxed and Ian from the ski shop team noticed a serious issue with my ski binding that could have led to an injury. He was able to fix it and I’m so grateful he took the time to checkout my whole ski and worked magic on this repair. Every team member I interacted was kind, helpful and really loves their sports!

This place has it all! So impressed with their selection & the breadth of sports and activities that they have specialty gear for. One thing you gotta know is that there is a “pre-loved” used section in which you can find incredible deals like a $10 hydro flask or a $50 hiking pack that’s normally $250!! See you thereeee!!!!

Im from the east coast and came out with my son for a few days of skiing. We both needed rentals. I scheduled a very helpful video consult with a staffperson in the rental department. He listened to my description of skiing ability/preferences for me and my son, asked questions, and provided a couple different options that could meet our needs, including suggestions for length and advice on boot sizing. He followed up with an email containing links to the rentals we discussed. I reserved in advance on the website.Pickup was easy and the equipment was perfectly adequate for our needs. My sons rentals were brand new, though mine were a little beat up on the top of the ski and the helmets were not the most fashionable. Nevertheless, it was a good experience and Ill definitely return.

Where have I been? I didnt know that this place existed. I didnt know that this one is housed in what used to be a huge ice skating rink in Berkeley. This place is massive. I went in looking for ball needles, and court shoes. I found ball needles, and they didnt have any mens court shoes, and havent been able to get any for 3 months.

I am more and more impressed with SB.I have a hard to fit foot and I was initially unsure about the advice that I would get from the very young salesperson. I was amazed to find a terrific fit in a shoe I never would have picked up. Since then SB is first choice for sports shoes. It just happened again. Thank you for your consistent helpfulness and knowledge. I have been to the stores in Novato, Berkeley, Presidio and SF and the trust has continued to build. That is important these days. BTW, I do not usually write reviews but I have given all my friends this feedback.

What a wonderful space. This building was a ice skating rink in its previous life and it’s surprisingly huge when you first walk in. I found this place more interesting than a Dick’s and less hip-ish than an REI. There were comfortable home furniture scattered around for just lounging around. Selections were good and the salesperson who helped me with my shoe selection was great.

Ordinarily Sports Basement is not the cheapest place to buy outdoors equipment, but they do have a great selection and have such a broad range of sports they support, so you really need to shop there to see if they have what you need.My daughter was in the market for her first wetsuit and needed help with sizing and fit. Someone came right over and helped us throughout the visit. It was on sale, so we got a good deal. I will update when she actually has the chance to use it and if she is still happy with her choice.

We reserved our skis online sizesAll set and all prepaid and the person at the service desk took over two hours to fill our order.and reasked all of the questions and made us try on our boots and measure our poles and skis. They would also not give me 167 skis and insisted on giving my husband the 167’s even though he has never skied before. They told me that I would “fall less” I have been skiing since I was two I practically grew up on skies. I was quit insulted but since we had been waiting for so long we said nothing hoping the person would just give us our equipment. Other employees asked us if we were ‘ok’ we said yes because we assumed the person helping us was working but we continued to wait. At the 1.5 h mark they came over and asked if I remembered what boot sizes I put down for the kids I said no but I have their sizes with me. They said that they needed the exact sizes I put down. While we did have four sets of skis we were just picking up. it was clear the person needed help with the computer but they never asked for help and we continued to wait they then charged us 70$ more then what we had already paid. It was not a good experiences. They were rude until the very end when they realized how long we had been waiting and said they “ didn’t want to take up more of our time” 🤦‍♀️maybe more training is in order.

Worst Bike Shop Ever Rating: 1/5 starsI have always been an avid cyclist and biking enthusiast. I usually go to Mikes Bkes, but they were booked, so I was excited when Sports Basement was available for repair. Unfortunately, my excitement quickly turned into disappointment after my first few encounters at the Bike Shop.The issue started with a simple repair: changing my disc brakes. However, what should have been a straightforward job turned into a series of frustrating visits.To my dismay, I had to go back to the shop three separate times to get my disc brakes fixed. Each time, I was assured that the problem had been resolved, but each time, the squeaking occurred while still in the shop, and nobody checked to confirm the problem was fixed.Worse, there seemed to be a complete lack of quality control at the shop. The same mistake was made repeatedly, and no one seemed to be double-checking the work before giving the bikes back to their owners. It felt like my concerns were not being taken seriously, and the staff was more interested in getting me out the door than ensuring my bike was in good working order.Overall, my experience with the Bike Shop has been incredibly disappointing. From the repeated mistakes to the lack of quality control and customer service, I cannot recommend this shop to fellow cyclists. I hope that they can learn from this feedback and make necessary improvements, but until then, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Staff expertise - Over the years, so many different departments have helped me find just what I need... cycling, shoes, camping, backpacks, climbing. The knowledge of the staff is incredible. I feel confident coming into the store with a sense of what I want, and relying on staff to help me find exactly what I need. One staff member spent half an hour helping my kid find the right backpack and sizing it correctly for them. The ski department took back a pair of skis that partially de-laminated with use over the season, sent them back to the manufacturer, and got us a new replacement pair.Community involvement - The store is a hub of outdoor program events. Ive been to several here. A great place to the involved in the outdoor community.Sustainability - You can bring in used boots/shoes and they will find a new home or recycle them, they sell and refill refillable propane gas canisters, they even recycle tennis balls!This outdoor gear store rocks!

Sports Basement Berkeley provided a smooth and efficient online order pick-up service. In my case, they were able to fulfill my order of about 20 different items in just a day and a half. Upon arrival, a staff member greeted me and directed me to the designated pick-up area, which was very convenient.Although I was able to quickly retrieve my online order, I also had time to browse around for additional camping items. The store had all the items I needed in stock, and the staff was friendly and helpful. While there were only two staff members at the registers, they were able to assist customers on the phone and in person. Despite my forgetfulness, they held my items for me while I quickly retrieved the additional items I needed.Overall, my shopping experience was fast and easy, taking only about 20 minutes. Additionally, there was plenty of parking available outside the store.

I dont visit as often as Id like because its farther than other outdoor recreation retail, but Ive yet to be disappointed when I visit. The staff and customer service here is excellent! This was my 3rd time renting a bike here. Excellent experience every time, but this time was exceptional. Jess went way out of her way to find a bike for me a day earlier than I’d booked, found replacement wheels because the wheels of the bike had been stolen, and upgraded me at no charge to a terrific Cannondale aluminum bike. I found what I was looking for in the hiking shoes department. My interactions with staff ran the gamut from helpful to sullen to over-helping. One staff member presumed to know what I needed based on what he decided was my activity level and age. I didn’t challenge his assumptions because I had already been there for almost 2 hours trying on shoes & boots and needed to get to an appointment.The stock in your store is great but customer service is definitely hit or miss. I found two pairs of hiking boots at a great price and will return for workout gear.

Love this place. I use their rental department during ski season and they are very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. I recently bought ski boots there and the sales person was very chill, not pushy and was genuinely interested in helping me make the right decision with the information available. Great selection of merch, though sometimes pricey. The discounts are decent though! Highly recommend them especially for rentals so you can get a feel for equipment before purchasing!

We really love having Sports Basement in Berkeley. Its our first stop for our outdoor/recreational shopping.It seemed like their disc golf selection was growing when they got a shipment of MVP discs earlier this year. Lately, its been much more hit-or-miss. My wish for Sports Basement is for the Berkeley location to expand their disc golf section, and specifically keep smaller brands like MVP and Discmania in stock... the store is so close to historic Aquatic Park, where lots of discs get lost in the lagoon.

I came in with some new hockey skates and a hunch that SB might have an oven in which to bake them for heat molding.Asked two very nice greeters at the front for guidance, and was directed to the snow sports area after a quick radio query.Jesse was helping someone with boots, but soon checked in with me and agreed to give the skate bake a whirl. I had looked up directions, vowed to accept responsibility for the outcome, and we got into it. He grabbed a laser thermometer, started up the oven, and went for it.Twenty minutes later, the skates were cooled and molded. On the way out, asked the two nice cashiers about somehow leaving Jesse a tip by charging my card for something nonexistent, and although that wasn’t possible, they suggested leaving a positive testimonial.Five star review? But I was floored by one of their employees named Andy who assisted my husband and I with installing a roof rack. As a newbie to skiing, I thought renting Sports Basements The Works package would make my first time skiing easier but it did not. I made my reservation on January 8th for pick up on January 19th. I picked a North Face The Works w/ Bib package yet I received Columbia apparel with pants that were not the size I had reserved. While I would not have cared if it was a Columbia bib I paid for a North Face set. It does not make sense to me why they have different brand options if they are not able to guarantee items. Thankfully, the person helping me was able to find a bib and jacket in my size but the process felt rushed, and to make matters worse after I left I realized they did not give me ski poles. I leave early tomorrow morning and will be forced to rent some from somewhere else. Overall, it was not a pleasant experience.

Its incredible to have a chain store with a large selection still feel like a local business. The managers and staff remember my dogs name (she is a pretty memorable monster for treats), thoughtfully ask about what they should look into stocking in particular sports or fields, and are extremely helpful no matter which department you are in. The Basementeer program is a no-brainer, and maybe my favorite store membership because it gives back to the community. Sports Basement partners with local groups, like my favorite East Bay Beer Runners, and races to promote wellness in the community and raise brand awareness of other businesses worthy of your support. Buying a bike could be a great experience. The excitement and fun adventure you will have when you are out there riding. So when I purchased my bike at SB Berkeley I was disappointed with the service I received. I don’t expect a red carpet roll-out, but at least the basics of fitting the bike with the customer. Learn about the customer’s technical experience in relation to the bike. Explain the basics of components that came with the bike that is different from manufacturer’s list. None of that happened. I wasn’t going to ask the moon of information but enough to equip me with knowledge and confidence of owning a new experience.Here’s what happened. I arrived there. SB guy was behind the counter in front of the computer. I was the only customer. I waited until he finished what he was doing. He saw me. He asked me “are you here for the bike”. I said “yes”. He went to get it. Rolled it out and leaned it against the counter. He asked me if I needed pedals. I said “yes”. He pointed me to the area where they are. Then he went back to his computer who knows what he was doing. No questions from him. No customer service type of interaction. I asked him about how to get my discount refunded for my online purchase. Boy, he punted that inquiry faster than I can say another word. He was hesitant with a tone of irritation of why are you asking me this question kind of thing. He said that he only build bikes and he doesn’t do online stuff. He commented to call the customer service. So. There’s this SB kid who was there cleaning up. I asked him for a favor to install the pedals. He was happy to oblige. Man, this guy (not the kid) just lost an opportunity to sell me more bike stuff by just being that. I know. I know. Don’t expect this kind of service from a non-bike store. The service mainly provided is a “rental service” mindset. Can’t blame him. He was just doing his own parameters. And I’m asking a lot. Yeah — basic customer service and I was the only customer there at the time, not that I was holding up a long line.Oh yeah I have thoughts about their online checkout process. It needs more clarification of how discount is applied when paying.Cheers. And happy trails. PS. Kudos to the kid who helped me install the pedals. Thank you. I didnt want to say this was racist, but I was shocked. At least two staffs seemed to think I dont understand English, just because I am multilingual and have an accent. One time, the staff didnt want to continue our conversation and insisted that they dont have Merrells shoes even though they obviously have them. Another time, the staff was commenting on the backpack I bought there. I just need some clarification, but he thought I dont know English, and asked my friend to explain to me what he said. I ride my bike 150+ miles a week and am a member of several East Bay bike clubs. I ride plenty and put many miles on the machine. Sports Basement is great. They are my general road repair shop and have several good mechanics. JD and Tito stand out. Sean and the team at the Sports Basement bike shop are not just expert and skillful mechanics, they go above and beyond to get you back on the road (or trail) as soon as possible, with a bike thats fully dialed in and riding like a dream. When a replacement part I needed (and that was fully covered by a warranty) turned out to be on back order for many months, Sports Basement ordered an upgrade part and then reduced both the cost of the part and the labor to make it work. Now the bike is riding like brand new, if not better, while if I took it elsewhere it could very well be sitting in the shop until next year.

I am a Berkeley native and use to skate on that awesome rink, so of course if I need rain gear I will think of Sports Basement first. They do nice things for the community and have a good reputation.For me, it was the WRONG CHOICE. I thought I would actually find what I was looking for, choose it, pay for it and leave. No. Sports Basement is good for shopping if you have plenty of time and money and love to browse.I came to shop purposefully and leave. Instead I got completely confused on every level. The music was so loud I couldnt even think. It was so cold - I should have remembered to dress as if I riding the zamboni itself.Though there are a million signs in the place, I turned around and around to find the mens section vs the womens section because its NOT MARKED. I felt like a mouse in a maze getting sensory torture. where is the cheese? I couldnt find it.After searching around and around, I got over to the section labeled rain. But there was no rain gear. Lots of snow gear. So I wandered around more. The music was so loud I really felt assaulted and couldnt even hear my own thoughts.It became clear that there was no rain gear anywhere near or around the sign. It has been raining since December without stopping and no rain gear!?I finally asked someone: oh its upstairs, under the camping sign.thats bad sign placement they said.I proceeded upstairs to the small rain section and didnt find anything I liked. $300 for rain pants? no thanks. Normally I would have hunted around. But it was too hard to find the womens options in that section, the prices were so far beyond what I wanted to pay, and the music gave me no ability to even see what was in front of me.It was just all completely disorienting situation and drove me out. I have never in my life had a shopping experience like this. It really surprised me.did you find anything you liked said the nice person as I left No, with the music I cant think straight. I am sick of seeing Black people getting racially profiled at this store. I have now witnessed it two times. Today was the second. The first was me.I was taking my bike in to get new handlebar tape put on. The guy who rang me up for the tape was a tall redhead. When I came back two hours later, he again rang me up for the labor. As I was putting on my helmet outside to leave, he came out and claimed that I hadnt paid for the handlebar tape. This was the same tape that he sold to me only two hours earlier. When I showed him the two receipts in my hand, he claimed that someone matching my description had just been seen trying to steal something. Today, a guy got accused of stealing a chinstrap. Unlike me, he wasnt very happy or nice about it.I really though that maybe it was just one bad employee at this location. But I dont believe that thats the case anymore. This store can sponsor Major Taylor rides until the end of time. Im not going to this location—or maybe any SB location—anymore.

I live down the street from this location and always love stopping by whenever I need something! Ive rented snowboard gear here, and it was quick and easy (though the rentals themselves arent great, but thats the same for any rental place). When I came in the other day to buy snowboard boots, Eric was very helpful and patient in bringing out every possible model for me to try on and giving me advice. He encouraged me to check out the pre-loved section as well, and I ended up buying a pair of great boots for a much cheaper price than I expected--so thank you, Eric! Overall, Ive had only positive experiences at this location and am happy to support them over REI or any other sporting goods store.

Ive recently stopped shopping at REI and started shopping at Sports Basement. I love the local, community vibes, and their discounts are unbelievable. They really make getting the gear you need to get outside into nature incredibly accessible and affordable. I feel like Im around family when I walk into the store, everyone is super friendly, and theres places for people to gather and hang out. Their email receipts are really great, too, and when you sign up for a Sports Basement membership, you get to select a local non-profit to have a portion of the Sports Basement 10% profits donated too.

I have been a customer at Berkeley Sports Basement for many years at this point. Typically, the store is great. However, when I went earlier this week, I experienced some of the worst customer service I have received to date. As an avid backpacker, I had been researching tents for my treks this coming summer for the past 10 or so months. Finally deciding on a Nemo model that I was thrilled BSB had in stock (love the 10% discount and the model had been sold out in many places), I went one day after work. Seeing no one on the floor and no Nemo tents set up, I began unpacking one of the tents to get a closer look (as one does with a $500 purchase). After about 10 minutes, a middle aged white gentleman comes over and immediately reprimands me for setting up the tent without asking permission, lecturing me on how I should have asked and essentially should not be unpacking the tent at all. Given that I was about to make a $500 purchase, no model was out, and no one was on the floor to help me, I found this ludicrous. Additionally, the absolute disrespect and tone in which the sentiment was relayed was condescending, dismissive, and highly unprofessional. To say that customer service was lacking would be an understatement. As a prior manager in restaurants, I would absolutely not tolerate that type of interaction with guests, regardless of their behavior. Sure, I should have asked. But no one was there. And to think that anyone would purchase a tent for backpacking without seeing it first is absurd. Overall, do better. While I love to support a smaller company, this experience certainly made me question whether I will continue to shop at BSB.

Sports Basement is my go to place for any outdoors adventure needs, it should be yours as well. I rented a MTB, the entire process was extremely easy, the staff in the store was the BEST! When I picked up my rental the associate was excited for me,he called over to the bike shop just make sure the bike was tuned to me based on my height and weight...he genuinely cared for my enjoyment and safety. Wait...the experience gets even BETTER! When I returned the rental I noticed the pricing on their rental sign was less than what I paid for online. I asked the associate who was assisting me with the bike return about the price, no questions asked he said yea I was overcharged online and promptly issued a refund of the difference. The Berkeley location is the BEST, every staff member I encountered was extremely friendly and helpful.

We rented skis on a Saturday afternoon it was understaffed and took over two hours. The next morning my daughter woke up with a fever. I returned the skis right away. We had them for about 18 hours. They did give use a rental credit but they did not refund any of the fees we had to pay upfront. Go to California Ski on Gilman for rentals. Bad service, bad policy.

I got my fox 32 float serviced there and it came back not working. They couldn’t even get the fork back together. They sent it to fox for 2 months and they told me fox said it was fine. When I picked up the fork I mentioned it didn’t work and they guy said oh those fork models don’t have a full lock out. Yet it fully locked out before and I know the fork model because I work on bikes but I guess they thought they could just get away with it because I’m a kid. I sold my bike and for hundreds less because my fork didn’t work it it’s expensive to find a replacement. I’m never going to send a fork there ever again. I’ll do it at home.

DO NOT get your tennis rackets restrung here! After playing once with my newly restrung strings, the tie-off knot came undone. This was okay at first as the person on the phone said they would restring it with no fee. However, once I got to the store, the employee admitted it was his fault for cutting the string too short but required me to pay for the strings again. I called the store manager the following day, and they reassured me I would get my racket fixed with no additional cost. Once I got there, the employee at the tennis department said my tennis grommets were the reason they came undone and refused to provide any service until I got the grommets fixed by them for $25. I got a second opinion from another tennis professional and he said my grommets were not the problem of the incident. The employees at Sports Basement tennis department do not have the best employee etiquette, and it is disappointing that I will no longer be a customer there. I will also not be referring my friends there to get restringing service done at Sports Basement.

I was barely into a bike ride after work yesterday when I suffered a mechanical problem I couldnt fix on the side of the road. I made my way to Sports Basement hoping they could get me going.Bike mechanics have been booked up pretty solid through the pandemic at times, so I was worried that I was going to be bike-less for a week. Benton, the bike mechanic on duty, was kind enough to take a look. He did his best to get me back out the door as quickly and inexpensively as possible, and even though in the end the best solution was a new chain and cassette (wasnt in the plan for a midweek ride) he had everything on the shelf and only charged me what seemed like a nominal fee for labor.Thanks to Benton I was in and out in less than an hour, and back rolling in time to salvage part of the ride.

Ive had a bunch of bike work done at the SB Berkeley shop and have always been happy with everyone Ive interacted with there. From finding a replacement for an oddball fork with a 1 steerer after a wreck, to upgrading drivetrains, to sourcing parts during the Great Pandemic Bike Shortage, I always get great customer service and great mechanical service here. Theyve also bailed me out more than a couple times when my own routine maintenance work went wrong. Im super glad to have them in my neighborhood.

Awesome space (a former ice rink) and huge selection! The decor is really nice too. Staff was friendly and helpful (I was looking for slim fit hiking pants), but I ended up leaving empty-handed as I picked the one type of pants that they didn’t have in the right color-size combination.
