I’ve been coming to this place for ten plus years now and there are some friendly staff but some of them are very rude and uptight. Unfortunately every room smells horrendous because it seems like they do not air out the place or have proper ventilation and lack cleaning. They also do have broken hand sanitizer dispensers inside the rooms. However, they do have working dispensers outside of the rooms.

Took two cats for TNR spay / neuter. The folks there were very nice (even though they are so short staffed) They helped me with the paperwork and got me out fast. The pick up in the afternoon was smooth, they provided advice for the care. Animal control is always looking for volunteers and foster parents to help take care of the animals. Give them a call, the animals really appreciate it.

Amazing place! Came here to check out some bunnies to adopt ❤️They have useful information to teach how to properly taking care of rabbits as a pet.Rabbits are definitely not a starter pet.

They are amazing and provide quality food, toys and care for there animals.Lots of loving dogs looking for good homes.Able to foster animal for 90 days before adoption and any health issues would be taken care of by the city or can take back if not the right fit for you as well.Currently all dogs over 35 pounds are free too!Also all animals are fixed and have a tracking chip before they leave to be fostered or adopted.Great place and care people!

I understand they are doing great job and I found my 3 year old staffy there. One issue is that if you are not in a city that falls in that county.. Then you cant take the dog for foster care before taking a final decision to adapt. As a first time dog owners..I think fostering a dog before adoption would have been better for me.

I am writing this review to express my deep disappointment and concern about the recent neutering/spaying procedure performed on a community cat at San Jose Animal Care Center. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory, and I feel compelled to share my concerns to bring attention to the issues I encountered.Upon collecting the community cat after the procedure and bringing it back home, it became immediately evident that something was seriously wrong. To my shock and horror, the cat was bleeding excessively, and the blood had spread all over the newspaper(the blood had saturated 5 layers of newspaper), cage, and blanket covering the cage. This distressing sight left me questioning the level of care and attention given to the animals undergoing these procedures.It is disheartening to witness such a lack of professionalism and competence. I expected the shelter to prioritize the safety and well-being of the animals they care for. Unfortunately, this incident has left me deeply concerned about the quality of care provided at San Jose Animal Care Center!

This place is horrible! I do not understand why they have such a high rating! They were totally rude and uncaring. Their employees are do not care about people nor animals. I have no idea why they have chosen this job. I was told a kitten I brought in was stable and totally fine despite having an upper respiratory infection. They told me to take it to MedVet and then they told MedVet to put it to sleep. They are so cruel and should find a different job for sure. Unbelievable!!! 😡😡😡 I would give no stars if possible.

I rescued this dog from the shelter they called me and told me no one claimed them and that I was the only person that inquired about him. I finally got to take him home. I hope I didnt get myself into a big mess. He is and good dog but needs a lot of training to be done with him. They gave me a crate and some dog food for him and theyre going to fix him and Chip him. This is all done for free for me taking him from the shelter.

Loved our visit here. We came a few times and finally found our beautiful girl, Lexie (formerly Niki). The facility was clean, open, and the animals were well cared for. We often found empty kennels because the animals were out on a walk or playing! I would definitely recommend coming here to find your new family member. They also had tons of kittens and some rabbits too.

The shelter put down the cat that we rescued without letting us know !! It was a community cat that we fed for two years. She was cute and sweet, always shared food with her two friends. She unfortunately hurt one leg but you can’t tell if not paying enough attention. It took us time to trap her and send to shelter for medical care.Shelter scanned her chip and found the owner, who obviously abandoned her years ago. They asked for this owner’s permission to put her down. The “owner”agreed(like he/her ever care)! Meanwhile we hear nothing from the shelter for couple weeks. After contacting them, we finally aware of this miserable ending of the poor sweet girl who is healthy apart from the leg!Why asking for the “owner”who abandoned her instead of people who really give cares to determine the little cat‘s life！She is a life，not somebody’s “belonging”! If shelter don’t want to save her life, just notice us and we will pick her up. WHY KILL HER?! Last year we brought in another cat and the shelter also killed her without any notice. Is it somewhere that really care about animal or just somewhere to stage kindness?Don’t bring your rescued animal here unless you dont want them alive.

I find it very crazy, I brought 3 sick kittens and a mommy cat here for them to get help and now I find the mom cat back in my neighborhood with no kittens in site. Now this mom cat is scared and sketch probably because it wants its kittens. This saddens my heart. I understand you guys get bunch of animals a day but for a 2 day turn around at least let the mom cat heal from the spay/neuter you guys did. It’ll probably end up getting infected and getting sick. Let alone I told this place that people in my neighborhood are purposely poisoning stray cats. I can not believe this.

They run the TNR program. The check in process was very quick. We dropped the cat off at 7:30 am and she was ready to be picked up at 2pm.The staff was very friendly and patient in answering our questions as thats the first time we participated in a TNR program.The cat mom recovered well from the surgery and was released back to the community.

Easy to get to, easy to find. Parking can fill up pretty fast. Was constantly busy the two days I stopped by. The staff hard working. Theres just too many caes for them to handle.They were able to help take care of kittens I found, but felt I was pretty lucky to get in. Hoping for the best.

I simply cannot fathom how people who have so little care for animals can work at an ANIMAL CARE CENTER.Recently, Ive noticed that a stray/feral cat in our neighborhood has been in terrible condition (a broken leg, gunk all over his face). Ive been trying to trap him, so that I can bring him to a shelter to get help. I called this shelter, and now I am certain I will NOT be bringing him here. As I have never saved a stray cat before, and I am not familiar with the proceedings of dropping animals off at shelters, I asked the question, So, I just have to drop him off? Is there anything I have to fill out, any fees I have to pay? The staff immediately ACCUSED me of being the owner of the cat, like I was trying to cheat away a vet bill for my own pet. She said in the rudest tone, and I quote, I dont see why youre confused. If this is not your cat, why are you concerned about just dropping him off? If this is your cat, you should be taking him to your veterinarian.Why should I not be concerned!? As seeing from the other reviews how they are carelessly putting stray animals that are brought in down. I am beyond appalled. Major change needs to be made, this is NOT A SAFE SPACE FOR ANY ANIMAL.

Got my newest dog from this shelter. Theyre an amazing place I highly recommend visiting for your next dog or cat. They have so many adorable pets to choose from. The staff is incredibly helpful too with very fast response time even when busy. Ive gotten 2 of my dogs from this shelter so far and plan on getting many more.

Let me tell you something, this precious little girl has been such a perfect addition to my little family and blessing as well. She fills mine and my partners heart up with so much love and fulfillment xoxox when we met her for the first time she was given the name butters lol as cute as that was me and my girlfriend felt like it wasnt the proper fit for her. So after endless thinking 🤔 about a billion cute names for a orange kitty we put names into a bowl and ended up picking her name which is now Autumn. The first day we got her we took her to pet smart and let her choose some toys and got everything ready to make her comfortable as possible at home (food/liter etc.) The first day was rough. As it would be for any animal adjusting to yet another new environment... right when we put her down she went right under the couch and didnt eat much. After a couple days have gone by we noticed she had sniffles and a couple other concerning things we were wondering about and i eneded up taking her to the vet and she got medicine and was properly examined and is now is feeling a lot more better and alot more playful. If you have read up to this point then Im happy to tell you since those hiccups weve had within the first week she is happier than ever and no longer wanting to hide and is even exploring the apartment more. The process of adopting and choosing our fur baby was really easy and simple . Staff was very friendly and helpful. They made sure to go over and explain the current health conditions that our cat had and were forever grateful. So if youre wanting to find a perfect addition to your family. If you want to volunteer in the kitten hut area, be prepared to be met with confused looks and no structure in their volunteering program. Some staff are kind, others are very gatekeep-y.At the fostering/volunteering class, our group was being shown around the kitten area, and one of the female staff just shoved me hard without any apology. Its unfortunate that some people do not know how to socialize properly.If people sign up and show up to volunteer, please have a list of tasks to do so theyre not just left sitting there for an hour or so. Hopefully, this has changed since Ive been there, but my experience could have been better.

We adopted our lovely cat, Toby, several years ago, and hes just wonderful. I had a very positive experience at the SJACC facility. I found it to be clean, spacious, well-staffed, and the animals looked healthy and well-maintained. We were allowed to enter the room where several social (non-quarantined) kitties were housed, so that we could meet a lot of eligible kitties. It was hard to choose just one because so many were adorable, and, more importantly, looked healthy and well-cared for. Our Toby was already neutered and vaccinated when we took him home, and he fit in right away. Ever since, hes been the King of the Castle. I make a donation to SJACC every Christmas; they deserve it for their efforts! Keep up the great work.

Do not send stray cats here to be TNR (trap, neuter/spay, release)!!! I trapped a stray cat on 3/15 and brought her in to be spayed. They told me she was pregnant and would abort the fetuses and then spay her. Today, on 3/18 (3 days later!), I found the very same cat dead along the sidewalk in my neighborhood. It is absolutely disheartening to see that this animal care center would perform a surgical procedure and drop off the cat less than 3 days later to take care of itself.

I had to go out of town for a week and needed a safe and comfortable place for my beloved dog. I chose this animal shelter for pet boarding, and it was a fantastic decision. The facility is clean, and the staff took great care of my furry companion. I received regular updates on my pets well-being, which eased my worries. The price for boarding was very competitive, especially considering the level of care and attention my dog received. Its evident that the shelters dedication to animals extends to their boarding services. Excellent quality and outstanding value!

They stretched their special holiday hours to 2 weeks. Not a problem if you actually informed the public via phone message or website. About 20 people showed up this morning to locked doors. That’s the city for you I guess. Just there to punch in for a paycheck, not actually do a job.

HORRIBLE TREATMENT!!! We adopted a dog and she got spayed when she was there but had no cone or anything on her head indicating that the surgery was fresh. 2 days later we go get her groomed her suture was split open from her licking it! The shelter FAILED to inform us. If you do the surgery at least do it properly now she’s in soo much discomfort !! Be sure to ask WHEN YOUR PETS HAD SURGERY! I had to pay $740 out of pocket!!!!!

Today I encountered two ladies at the front of this place who had ZERO COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS.I AM APPALLED PEOPLE LIKE THEM CAN WORK HERE.My dad is a contractor and he was working on renovating a clients house in San Jose. While clearing out stuff he found a litter of 4 kittens in the bushes in the yard. He didnt see any Mom around for the past two days and so he asked me to see if any animal shelters can come take them. They would be pouring cement in the backyard and didnt want them near any of the cement while it was drying.So I called San Jose Animal Care Center because this clients home was in San Jose and it was the closest shelter. I explained the situation and the person over the phone said sure no problem trap them and bring them in. They didnt specify that they were only accepting sick kittens either.So I trapped them Saturday morning and brought them in Saturday afternoon. Before I even entered the establishment there were two ladies in the front. I explained the situation and let them know I called yesterday and the person over the phone said it was okay to bring them in.They said absolutely not we are not taking them and they look healthy enough and they are not sick. Just release them and let them fend for themselves. I was appalled when I heard this. These two ladies had no sense of compassion what so ever. The kittens were less than 8 weeks old and they told me they could fend for themselves!???When I asked where can I even release them they are pouring cement in the clients backyard right now. They said release it in a neighbor front lawn or something. So I said you are basically telling me to dump the kittens!? When I asked them do you know other places that can take the kittens they literally told me no one will take them just release them back. At this point I was having really bad anxiety and couldnt even catch my breath.How can this establishment tell me one thing over the phone and then when I get there tell me another!?I am appalled by those ladies attitude and their lack of kindness. How can people who are like this work at an animal care center!? SHAME ON YOU TWO LADIES.

I was shocked and surprised with the SJAC operation from start to finish. The building is well designed for calmness. The personnel were extremely helpful and caring to each customer they assisted. The cleanliness was exceptional. There wasnt the smell that usually hit ones nose when first walking into the building.There is a separate wing for intakes. There is a gift shop. They provide boarding at a low price. I was very impressed.

This is only for my experience in trying to find my lost pet and not adopting/fostering.Our cat had been missing for 3 days at this point and we’ve been checking local shelters in hopes of finding him. We noticed online that 3 cats were recently admitted one of which had the same color and about the age as mine, but no pictures. I wanted to call to see if I could provide a description to see if it was him but messages would take 2 days to answer per the automated voicemail which is fine. We were also fine with driving from Milpitas with low expectation that it was him since we’ve had no luck so far. The hours were limited and we didn’t want to wait until a photo was posted in case miraculously it was him and we’d have to pick up another day.We arrived and grabbed a ticket. The front staff all seemed nice and thorough with clients. While we waited I kept refreshing the website to see if a picture had uploaded for the potential match; the other two had pictures uploaded which I thought was odd and on the tablet in the lobby the admitted cat was erased so I took a screenshot of it on my phone in case it would do the same; maybe the site is refreshing/updating, I don’t know.Got to the front and provided the ID number. The clerk was talking to who I assume was the supervisor about the cat and I mentioned I just wanted to see if it was my cat. I was immediately responded with “You’re not the owner. We know the owner and he’s not allowed in the building” and she went back to looking at a computer.I didn’t even know what to make of that. Okay, sure the cats not mine but why do I need to know the second part? I’m sure they’ve got precautions for certain clients but on the flip side you have people just trying to find their pet especially since they’re the only shelter that serves so many cities. I don’t know if it’s been a long day or they thought I was someone suspicious but a simple “No sorry we found the owner” would have sufficed. A weirdly negative first impression and one that made losing my cat that much worse.

We were working toward rehoming our special needs dog, but they called us two days later saying they had to put him down right away as they were too afraid to take him out of the crate. Our dog has never shown aggression towards people. We picked him up and walked by several people on our way out with no issues. Afterwards, we have heard horror stories about this place from other rescue centers.

City of San Jose Animal Care Center is the best !My cat Mr. is a cat that I had rescued from a man in Los Banos who said he was taking the mom and her 2 kittens and dropping them in to the canal . I offered to take all 3 . My mom took the mom, my daughter took the calico kitten and I kept the grey tabby . They were 9 weeks old.And very scared . Mr. is a house cat only and very spoiled . While I was at work he had got out the door . I searched for a whole year, every day for Mr. Finally I gave up . 1 year 8 months later since his disappearance, I received a phone call from City Of San Jose Animal Care Center . They had my cat Mr. He was chipped. I couldn’t believe it . I didn’t think I would ever get him back . I went to pick him up right away . He acted as though he had never left . Then 1 month later he escaped . So again I was on the hunt to find him . It wasn’t until3 years later I got the phone call from City Of San Jose Animal Care Center again. I was beside my self . So I went and picked Mr. up . He again acted like he never had left . Needless to say we are very, very careful not to let him escape again.I just want to say how much I appreciate theCity Of San Jose Animal Care Center . They mended my broken heart not only once but twice ! They saved my Baby Mr. ❤️Thank You Toni and Mr.

I think this place has a lot of potential. If youre planning on adopting or fostering a dog, this is the place to go in the San Jose area. Areas are well maintained, and the kennel attendants are hospitable. They definitely put a lot of energy into the dogs they care for and adopt out. (4.5 star)However, the front desk/help center could do a lot better. There is little to no assistance or guidance for people who already have dogs. I and a few other people I have seen while there are basically just told, Sorry, I cant help. Then send you on your way. While I understand the California shelter capacity crisis, there needs to be advisors or something to help people who need assistance. (2 star)Id highly recommend adopting a dog from here, but I wouldnt for other pet-related needs. I think if the desk can improve their hospitality and offer genuine support for the community, then they could be one of the best in the bay.

I adopted my fur baby there. I also love that they have the TNR program. One of my neighborhood ferals was taken there. They clean up his mange, neutered him and returned him looking healthy as ever to our neighborhood. He sticks close to my house. So I feed him and hope to take other cats from there colony for TNR. GREAT staff and volunteers there as well.

My sister and I really wanted a black cat. We found Clayton who is now Bagheera! Joan or Joanne was one of the volunteers who let us visit him and it was love at first sight. I asked how much the adoption was, she replies $10. Best $10 I ever spent(I think it was some sort of promotion). Bonus, the shelter gives you a free pound of food and a toy. The thing that made me love this place were the people. Before we left, Joan/Joanne came out with a huge FREE cat tree. She let us have it. 10/10 would recommend. Added bonus, the adoption fee consists of : micro chip, spay/neuter, rabies vaccine, flea and tick treatment, and all updated shots.

You guys are terrible. Your customer service skills are so dysfunctional as your guises selves! How are you going to charge somebody $1000 when somebody illegally let somebody’s dog go they decided to find it today and you were charging him $1000 because of room and board ! You are not in this business because you want to reunite humans with their fur babies. You are in it to make money, and you are disgusting and despicable.. I witnessed the whole thing you didn’t think that young couple had the money to pay for said dog that was illegally let go out of said persons home, and now that they’re back in the United States from employment they found their fur baby and instead of you being happy that they’re reunited, you sat there and gave that young couple nothing but grief how dare you guys you need to be trained properly !And then threaten to call San Jose PD after they already rendered payment is beyond me I’m a witness to everything that happened you workers handled yourselves poorly you workers had no empathy and or compassion, but you saw a way to make money and you latched on it. Shame on you, I will never donate to this place again. I will never bring dog food. I will never bring blankets somebody needs to get in there and retrain your whole front office staff immediately.

We showed up to adopt a kitty, and the parking lot was flooded with cheapie trying to get freebies for their animals. They had some event that looked to be for “at need” pets and I see these people come out of teslas and Cadillacs with their fancy expensive looking dogs trying to get free shots and stuff. I waited about an hour in line in the street to get in and park and they told me to drive around the block and get back in line because there isn’t room due to this seemingly mismanaged event.The week before we also came in to adopt and they lady said they close in like 45 minutes and they wouldn’t help us so we had to come back and ended up in that mess.All in all after dropping off my kids and wife and waiting in the car down the street for two hours they finally were able to adopt our new cat. The cat we love and are happy that whoever fostered it did a great job, the cat immediately ate food and used the litter with no issues.

I made a TNR appointment a couple weeks back and they canceled it due to limited staff. Then I find out the SJACC is on strike. I get you guys need to make money and all but these are animals who need someone to be their voice. By the time you guys get back from your strike there will be triple the number of animals who need help.We brought a stray cat there at the beginning of august because he was injured and despite the number of cats and dogs they already have, they told my neighbors they’re putting him up for adoption after he gets fixed and it says he was available on the portal and he is doing great. As a feeder, I went to see him 2 weeks later and they told me he was unavailable because he was very lethargic and in quarantine. HE WASN’T EVEN FIXED. What they told my neighbors was completely false information to get their hopes up. Then a week later he is no longer on the portal and we suspect they killed him. Here you have a cat who’s lived 6 years on the street, freedom and people feeding him everyday, only to be cooped up in a small cage and “promised” to be treated and cared for when only in the end, be put down because the resources was not sufficient enough for him. He was such a sweet boy and his life was taken away from him. SJACC DO BETTER.

Really mad & frustrated at the lack of organization. On Sat March 4th, I dropped off 3 cats from a property I work at. There were 8 total I meant to drop off. I went back to the property and dropped off 1 more cat on Tuesday the 7th. She was pregnant and one of the staff members asked if I wanted to take her after she was spayed. I said yes abd he said hed put down that I wanted her and that they would call me when she was ready. I waited and never heard back from anyone. Cut to today March 20th, I called to check in. Coincidentally someone called to tell me that my cat that Id dropped off on the 4th was ready to be picked up but if I didnt get her by tomorrow the 21st by 3pm (with less than 24 hour notice) that shed just be released. I rushed after work to buy a carrier and went to grab her. A staff member was going to go get her and I asked about the issue with the date. He had a photo and I saw that it was the wrong cat (it was one I had dropped off on the 4th sure). But when I told him that she was not the cat Id put down for taking, I waited for them to look into what happened. Apparently the shelter released my cat on the 15th - stating that they had called someone and they said release her. When I asked to look into it more and asked what number they called because I never heard from them, the staff said they called some other woman who releases cats and she just let her go. When I asked why wasnt my number - the number on the intake paper - called, he had no response except the lady was here already releasing cats so she just took her. I was super livid earlier and upset and couldnt write this review until hours later. What is the point of putting down claim for an animal if no protocol will be followed?Really upset and dont really trust this place anymore.

Youll find many cute animals looking for their forever home. The volunteers here are the best!! I adopted some rats and the small animal expert volunteers gave me a lot of information and guidance on their care. They even emailed me recommendations and tips.The front desk staff isnt as warm but they got me through the paperwork quickly. Amazing experience. We came to adopt one kitten and back home with two. They are siblings and better to stay together. The staff asked if we can take both and we of course accepted. We just surrendered a stray husky this am, that we had found on the 11th of Nov. running around in our neighborhood. I have to say I was impressed with Corinna, she kept her word. We were there yesterday & got turned away, because of the shelter being @ full capacity. She told us to return the following morning & that they would take the husky. Unclear websites. had my cat for a week after a neigbor trapped it. Even thoughj trapping is illegal I was misinformed by staff and fined 311 $ to get my cat released from this animal jail. I got fined for having a cat off leash, cannot find any cat leash laws, and state law which supercedes local states clearly cats are allowed to roam. Animal control officers straight lied about laws will not give up the lawbreaker who trapped and turned my cat in. This place has been great in helping me get feral cats in my neighborhood spayed and neutered for free. I just dropped the cats off after Ive trapped them and then they return them to the neighborhood a couple days later after theyve recovered from surgery. They also get their shots and de-flead. Very rude at the front desk when inquiring about a dog. We drove 2 hours to see a dog and made sure to call the night before and hours before we got there so we didn’t make the trip for no reason. Right when we got to the door they told us that she had been adopted. We ended up making the trip for no reason. All around very rude and hostile workers. They need to communicate to possible adopters better and all around make their process a lot less confusing. They don’t answer back phone calls or emails and are very confusing. I got the love of my life Stormy there! The person who handed her off to us gave us a disclaimer since it was our first time owning a husky. He was 100% right about everything and were glad he was honest about her behavior to get us in the right mindset. We started training her and its been 8 months now and were so so happy.Also, **just an awesome added bonus:** someone recently gave us their malnourished dog (due to unfortunate reasons) and Im working on bringing him back to a normal weight. I lost my job because of COVID and I just needed some help during this month. Luckily, they have a free pet food program. I thought it would just be a small bag of food but no!! I went to adopt a girl dog, and did. She is beautiful, and about as undomesticated as any dog Ive ever known in my 35 yrs as a Certified Veterinary Technician. Unaware of all of this they let me have her for the $120/adoption fee. I was handed the dog on a slip noose lead and paperwork that was not gone over as well as Id have liked. She has training needs Im now feeling I cannot provide. Turns out shes a sheepherding dog I have been TRYING TO get a hold of Monte there that adopted her out to me to get some help and its been 4 months Ive tried calling showing up etc and I dont get anything but excuses that they cant find Monte or hes off today etc. Customer service was great when I took her, really need help with behavior and training now shes unpredictable and gets frustrated...5/29/23 Still have never been given the time or decency by anyone at the Animal Care Center. The dog I adopted had turned out to be the biggest handful of any dog Ive ever known. She had EVERY SINGLE BAD BEHAVIOR, BAD HABITS, SHE BITES, SHE WINT LET ANYONE IN MY APT WITHOUT A SNARLING FIT, and I cant afford the training she needs. I am so disappointed that these people at SJAC never helped like they said they would if I needed it. Be aware there is not followup adice or care that I know of

Had an extremely misleading listing which said nonreactive, good at dog parks, and easy to walk on leash, drove 45 minutes to this shelter to view the dog and when I got there the dogs listing at the shelter was completely different, they said that the dog had bitten multiple people, aggressive, will not be good with other dogs, and tugs on leashes, they had also told us that we would have to sign a waiver since the dog has bitten a few people. I approach my concern to one of the office staff and said they should update her online listing to remove the false advertisement, the staff said they couldnt because of the management, which to me makes no sense. Its a shame that they list such positive things about their dogs to drill you in and then you get there to basically tell you its all false. I truly hope the one dog I viewed today can get adopted but I dont see why they cant just update her online listing to the correct information. What a shame. 🙁🙁

Money is funny every now and then and this was the third time this year that the shelter helped us out with dog food. I appreciate how empathetic and understanding the staff and management are. My dog got out and was picked up by the city. He was tagged and microchipped but I was never immediately contacted by the shelter. When I was finally notified nearly a week later that he had been processed at the shelter, I went over immediately! The front desk receptionist told me that it was too late. This place is very unprofessional. I was fostering a kitten several months ago, and they accused me of trying to keep him and not reporting him having diarrhea. First off, I was giving him meds for several weeks from the first check up visit. I also had another emergency vet appointment scheduled the same day that they were calling me leaving me threatening voice messages. It’s not my fault they do not communicate with the rest of their staff and departments. The way they treated me was unprofessional, rude and down right hurtful! I have been fostering dirty ringworm infested street kittens for them for years and do not deserve that treatment. Even adopted 2 healthy cats back in 2017. There are way better places to get kittens and cats from, and Rescue agencies that respect and communicate with their foster volunteers, then this place. They then told me I can’t volunteer for the rest of the season. Hey, with the way they treated me, I don’t ever want to volunteer here again, anyways.Also if you are interested in fostering to adopt, this isn’t the place, they don’t want people who want to adopt. 5 stars goes to Monty for being a great animal behavior specialist, he’s the go to guy if you want to see if your choice of animal will work out for you1 star to the shelter. They don’t seem to care about the animals though, we wanted to adopt a 13 week old Lab. We were told we couldn’t do a meet and greet with the lab we already own “Because the puppy doesn’t have all of his shots.” Understandable. Everything went perfectly but they wanted $600 for adoption. They have a $10 adoption promotion for dogs 30 lbs and over, they said he was 28lbs and we’re unwilling to even negotiate a donation for a dog who will be 80+ lbs full grown. Mind you their phone line states their adoption fees do not exceed $275!They were unwilling to negotiate over money to see this dog went to a good home. The manager seemed to have no regard for the puppy but rather that he get $600 for a dog who hasn’t even received his full regimen of vaccinations which they would then make our responsibility.All together the dog would easily cost $1000 after his first check up. How a shelter could expect an orphaned dog to go to a good home when you can purchase a pure bred Labrador puppy TRAINED for close to that amount is ridiculous to me hence the reason for this review. All they have done is sentenced a young dog to more time in the shelter, sitting hopefully with cortisol level through the roof. I’m sure we aren’t the last family that won’t be able to afford him.

My experience was quite a disappointment and very disheartening. After my cat passed away at the ripe old age of 18 years, I wanted to find another companion to hang out with me. After spending time looking on line and calling to verify, i pedaled there and spoke to a young lady who was enthusiastic about my desire to adopt an older cat recovering from a very recent eye removal.While I understand the need for the animal to go to a good home, this went beyond conventional logic. They asked where and how I was living. I live in a fenced private lot, well protected and secluded with shade trees and a garden. They insisted the cat must be kept indoors as it could no longer defend itself. From what, I asked. Well, other cats, stray dogs, even a bird might take em was her response. Back and forth we bartered and reluctantly i agreed, the cat was to be kept indoors.After nearly two hours of waiting and interrogating me, the young lady, perhaps less than satisfied with my answers or unsure of my intent, finally relented and went to find the cat. I cannot find him she says, returning after a twenty minute wait. Again she leaves, seeking info on this old one-eyed cat only to return and say, hes not ready to leave yet as the eye surgery was yesterday and he needs more time to heal.Three hours have gone by. Okay, may I leave my number and you call me when hes healthy enough to escape and I will be here to get him. No problem she says.They never called me, its been nearly a year without a companion and I wonder if the old cat died without ever leaving the place.That employee effectively prevented an old man from giving one tired old one-eyed cat, perhaps the last couple of happy years it had remaining, because she didnt like me!It was a difficult experience and I no longer contribute to the animal shelter.Sadly,Dave flowers

Volunteers and staff are so kind and helpful! They all really seemed to love the work that they do and were very enthusiastic! Cages are clean, and the animals are healthy and cared for. It is so good that unlike other shelters, they work to make the animals that come in healthy and adoptable instead of simply euthanizing them. The facility is very big, and the animals seem constantly very happy. I have no doubt that the animals here are living the dream.

My poor tabby died after 25 yrs couldnt get him to a vet due to Covid. Months later,, I just adopted a cute little Lynx pt kitty. The people are so nice especially on the day of adoption. They give you pets medical info in a folder of treatments during stay, neuter/spay license, microchip, so you are up to date on your new furry babys health, plus coupons.. My dog bit family member. The emergency room reported it to city. A polite agent came over to check my dog health and vaccine records. Went here for clear the shelters day. It was somewhat crowded but they got us through to look at some dogs very quickly. The staff was kind to us, and we got our new dog in less than an hour!The only reason Im giving 4/5 stars is there was some confusion about what to do. No one told us, but they were handing out goodie bags with free dog food. We only heard this from another visitor once we were outside with the dog.I also noticed that they tend to rush people when theyre looking at the dogs, but maybe that was just because there were so many people looking to adopt today.Overall it was a great experience! Please volunteer here. They have so few staff that they are having to kill animals. Please help any way you can. Adopting animals from this shelter literally saves lives. When they dont have fosters to bottlefeed kittens, they have to kill them. They are so full they cant take in animals. They are killing record numbers of dogs and cats. Brought in my outdoor cat (semi feral, with a tipped ear) for medical care. We followed up many times (email, call, came in person to the shelter everyday) to find out his condition, receiving radio silence and being turned away. Then, finally after a few days we call and find out they failed to give him medical care and gave my cat to some random people claiming to be the owners without giving us any details or notifying us (the caretakers). We have been unable to get him back to us. I still dont know if my cat is okay :(. Extremely unprofessional and straight up rude, does not care about the best interest of their patients/animals.

We went in yesterday to look at rabbits. The front desk clerks where not very helpful or nice, but they were not awful either. We waited almost two hours (I had my 5yo and my 3yo with me) for our turn but I didn’t mind because it’d be worth it, right? Well, not really. The “expert” (who didn’t even know how to properly handle a rabbit) was ok the first two minutes of our interaction, then I mentioned I had talked to the Manager about how we were not 100% ready to take the rabbit home that instant (I had already asked her if it was still okay for us to do all the paperwork and go through all the process so we could meet and hopefully find a furry friend that feels comfortable around us; she, the manager, said it was completely fine so we did everything the way we were supposed to, and we but we’d be back that day or the next day, I only got to tell her “we are not ready right now...” and she didn’t even let me finish. She literally took the bunny out of my daughter’s arms, shoved her in a box and said OK, BYE.My son was crying, my daughter was speechless and I was so upset! I tried to approach the lady again and tell her we had questions and we had waited almost two hours but she just said “There’s SERIOUS people waiting. BYE.” I mean, do you think I was playing games? Yeah, I waited those two hours with two toddlers while my baby was with my In-laws because I love to waste my time... I get there we’re other people waiting but first, we didn’t skip steps, we were there with the same purpose as everyone else. Second, there’s a POLITE and PROFESSIONAL way to do and say things. Third, you said it yourself, lady; not many people adopt rabbits and your attitude could have cost that sweet fur baby her for-ever home.The only positive part of our experience (besides meeting that cute little ball of fur and energy) and the reason why we are going back there is how the manager handled the situation; she approached me when she saw my children crying and apologized multiple times, she seemed genuinely concerned and she helped me get some extra information before O left. I didn’t catch her name, and i don’t even know if “Manager “ is the proper term to use, but she was really sweet and thoughtful and I am very thankful there’s people like her in this rescue center.

My little 13 year old Pomeranian got out of my grandmothers backyard last night and a neighbor found her and took her to this place this morning. I was putting up signs all over my neighborhood and put a post on a neighborhood app, neighbor advised me on the app that she found my dog and took her here. I then rushed over to this location and advised them why I was there, when she said yes they have her there. The reseptionist told me that it would cost $181.00 to get her released. I told them I am homeless and cant afford there charges for keeping her in a crate for 5 hours til I found out and rushed to get her. She called a senior officer Sharon to tell me about there charges and said there was nothing she could do, then she walked away commenting you should take better care of your dog! I told the receptionist I didnt deserve that at all and demanded her name. She then came back and said she denied saying what I and a few others in the lobby heard! She was absolutely unprofessional and extremely rude! Its truly sad how everything revolves around money, and when you have none and your pets are your life how selfish and rude people are especially those who are working for a animal Care center and claim they are all about finding homes for pets! You can donate 24/7 supplies such as newspapers, blankets, and food at the entrance for the shelter animals. If you want a pet, please rescue and adopt from a shelter. I went here on a Saturday day for the homeless animal Care. The people are very caring and friendly. They are very organized and orderly for at least 58 animals waiting for care. I waited for 3 1/2 hours and the cutoff for the day was number 48. I have to get there bright and early with the sunrise next time if I want my cat to be seen on a Saturday homeless clinic. However, I was able to get some very healthy glutten free, no antibiotic cat food and some fun toys for my cat. It was a lesson well learned to come a sunrise and I got some great food and toys. So, my visit was not a waste at all.

My experience has been absolutely frustrating!!! I sent an email about 4 cats that our family was interested in. We received a “canned” email saying that “the pet” we were interested in had been adopted. Ok fine, but I also specified what type of cat we would additionally be interested. Why couldn’t we schedule an appointment to come and see what’s available.When calling in for information or even an explanation, you are told, you have to email, they call when they call or not at all!!! The person I spoke kept giving me “I don’t know” as her answer. Then she flat out told me I could call other adoption services. It’s absolutely ridiculous.This process with them is comparable as trying to pass an act through Congress just to adopt a pet for our family. They used to be a no-kill shelter. Then during the beginning of COVID, they told me they kill surrendered animals, regardless of the health condition. Because Santa Clara county has too many irresponsible owners and too many un-neutered/un-spayed, starving strays There are specific times you can bring pets in, before 3pm, and they need appointments. Not sure if that’s still true. But I try to get there early. I think they need more vet doctors, a better adoption program, and more staff working to help find donated pets, homes and good health care. More like jail for donated animals, as well as questionable cleaning, with strong urine and pet odors.

I put my dog to sleep today because I was too poor to defend her in court. San Jose animal shelter does not care and I was not able to tell her side of the story. Aloi is dead and my heart is crushed. After being a responsible dog owner and working with dogs professionally for 20 years, I was shocked by the citys indifference. The place is very clean. The staff is very helpful with many resources to offer the community and knowledgeable as well. They offer free TNR for community cats to keep down the feral population down. The only downside is it is very hard to get ahold of anyone through the phone so you would literally have to drive down there to speak to anyone. Too be perfectly transparent, I often find myself villanizing animal shelters, when thinking of them. I imagine some horrible kill shelter, with some menacing anomal executioner. Good news, i just have a wild imagination. Its nothing like that.However its always difficult for me to see so many animals, with no home. Most of them are stressed out or have anxiety and I want to rescue all of them. I get anxiety, they have anxiety, then suddenly a calm, rational and helpful employee, who works there at the San Jose City Animal Control Center, appears and is there to answer all your questions and to bring you whichever animal that you want to visit with. They will bring your animal of choice, to visit with you, in a a designated visiting area. There is a visiting limit of, 3 animals per day. Something to keep in mind.Anyways, as far as this kind of place goes, Im going to give it a good review. All psychobable aside, its a friendly place and they will take the time to answer all your questions and you just might walk out of there with your furry soul mate. You cant beat that!

What can you say about an underfunded city service? They do pretty well with what they have. We just adopted two kittens and the staff were very helpful. One kitten had minor complications from her spay surgery, and they let me take her back twice to them for checkups. Then I also got a free checkup visit with my own vet after that. Each pet here is priceless and I strongly encourage all to support & rescue pets from the pound.Yes - they will be more challenging than one from a breeder, but thats hopefully when the goodness in a person comes through. Free spay and neuter for cats and dogs is offered here! The people working there also seemed very friendly. The downside to offering a free service means that they have to implement a few very strict rules, though. No overnight boarding for animals whove had their surgery, strict pick-up times, etc. Be sure to schedule your appointment online in advance, because I dont think they accept walk-ins.

My family & I came in to possibly adopt a dog . My son & I both were hanging out with a beautiful blue nose named Gucci for a short while & then he asked me if we could get her out of her kennel, so we made our way to the front desk, I filled out the forms & about 7-8 min later the woman said that we couldnt see the dog. With a shocked look on my face I asked her why & she replies with, sir, you have an an outstanding balance of $12.37 from 2013 . You brought your dog Jackson for vaccinations & neutering I replied with thats impossible because you guys wouldnt have let me leave with my dog had I not taken care of the bill, thats completely beside the point, are you really going to stop a possible adoption over a simple $13 bill???Long story short I ended up finding the collections agency they sent me to and taking care of the bill, this is now almost a week later and I go back with my son hoping that Gucci is still there come to find out she was put down 3 days later.F*** that shelter, they put that poor dog down over $13 f*** that shelter🖕👎

We found a dog when we drove in Saratoga. After calling the owner from the collar tag for a couple hours without response, we heard about this place and sent the lovely boy here. The people there were uncomfortably rude and even nasty, to people and to dogs we saw there, to the point we were worried about the dog’s safety. Came here today to drop off the sick stray cat. The staff here was very friendly and kind. I didnt get any of their names, but they were all nice. Especially the gentleman that checked me.The dispatcher gets o stars. . Called yesterday 9/2/2017 about a sick stray. The lady on the phone was not pleasant at all, kinda rude. I thanked her for her help and she said mmmmm and hung up. I work in a medical office and deal with a lot of stuff,but Im never rude or nasty with someone. You dont know what someone is going through, or how helpless someone feels when wanting to help an animal that may be ill. I suggest you guys record these calls or hire people with more companion and patience. I understand that you can get people on the other end that are rude, or make things complicated. But its your freaking job to help out and not be rude when someone is asking for your advice.

This review is only for San Jose animal field service officer, Wendy. I recently had a sick opossum taking up residence in my garage. After realizing it wasn’t going to leave on its own I placed a call to SJACC. My request for service call was less than enthusiastic, so I wasn’t hoping for much help.Wendy arrived well within the two hour window I was given. I was really disappointed. I found some kittens abandoned (in a box) I couldnt in good conscious leave them there so I took them home feed them even took the time to take off the millions of fleas thinking I was helping out the shelter workers. When I went to drop them off at the surrender spot the worker was extremely rude. He asked me if the mother was near by I told him no they were alone. My dog died March 31, 2020. She had CHF and recurrent pancreatitis which required her to be on prescription food, which I pre-ordered by the cases. After her death, I was unable find a place that allowed prescription food donations. So I came in today looking for a bunny that I had called in about 15 minutes before I showed up then instead of letting me see the bunny one worker treated me as if I didn’t know anything about rabbits ( rabbit owner for a year and a half) and constantly made it uncomfortable for me as if I had no clue what I was getting my self into when we got to the waiting room where you meet the animal after about an hour of talking and filling paperwork out I finally got to meet the animal the room where you meet the animal smell like chemicals and gave me a headache just sitting there and i felt really uncomfortable having to come in and basically have someone tell me information that I already knew and made me feel like I didn’t know anything about rabbits. And one more thing I would like to add is that I felt as if I was interrogated because of all the questions about where the bunny will stay, what food, and what size cage and other information about me that had nothing to do with getting a bunny. Well I’m glad that I got the bunny I had came there for and 5 stars for the bunny but 1 star for customer service

I had an assistant go down to check on a missing gray tabby cat named Jack, several times searching for him. The staff has been very helpful, Sharon U., has been so kind, and generous with her assistance. I appreciate this so much in this time, pandemic included.

We had to give our little companion Chico over today. He passed in the night after a long fulfilled life with us. We will miss him dearly. They treated him and us with dignity and respect. Thank you and God bless our little family member who brought us so much joy.

I have never had issues with this location. And I am not hating.... but if your facility doesnt do spay and neuter anymore.... PLEASE TAKE IT OFF YOUR WEBSITE TILL YOU DO

The employees are usually nice but many are not informed of their own policy. We dropped a cat off and asked to be notified if it was up for euthenasia but we were never contacted and the note was never made. The cat was put down due to a expensive and complex surgery.

We rescued a stray cat and took it there. They were very helpful and gave us updates about how the cat was doing until the cat got adopted. Very nice people and what a Nobel cause.

Rocky the gentle giant pit bull looking for a forever home with no cats. Easy going Rocky loves people to pet his head give him treats, especially treats! A very good boy who likes walks and snoozing in the middle of the day.
