I originally had another dog in mind but it turns out that she wasnt the best fit with my grandkids around... and then I met June. She is the sweetest thing! And super smart!!!Everyone there was so helpful and honest. Theyre not just trying to push off the animals on just anyone. they are trying to find the right, loving home for them.

Took one of my dogs there for her second rabies shot. You can live in unincorporated areas and still utilize SDHS vaccine services. Workers are very nice. The sign for the vaccine center needs to be clearer. Had to go into the main lobby to find out it was the left door before the main entrance. They were late returning from lunch. Possibly late going to lunch. But with appointments booked, it would also have been helpful to indicate when they would reopen after lunch. It seems like they had been specific about being prompt for appointments.

Surrendered puppies to them and I took their offer to spay the mom, but they only gave me one whole antibiotic pill, and nothing for the pain, which eventually led to an infection. I get theyre a service that operates on donations, but that doesnt make it any less messed up.

We went in a few days ago to look around, we just lost our 14 year old pitty in August and when we saw this sweet boy we put a hold on him, we were 2nd hold, I figured if it happened it was meant to be and here we are snuggled with him .

I had to take my friends dog down and went here in the morning, without much notice nor any money. They made me wait a while but that’s understandable. They waived the fees for me which was incredibly kind of them. They made this difficult process a little bit easier.

I went to the El Cajon humain society for a euthanasia appointment for my nine year old half chihuahua and half mut with mandula cancer. When I got there I was 15 minutes early and I was balling my eyes out. I was immediately greeted and asked to sit down and wait because they werent done with another appointment. There was a young lady brown hair light eyes asked if I needed anything while she passed by with things in her hand. She passed again and asked if I wanted water ir anything else.They made me feel somehow that they cared. Thank you so much for making me feel better.Even though I wasnt better I realize now that they care and I truly appreciate your kindness.

Great place right now. I got laid off and I cant afford to feed my cats. I own two cats but because of COVID the neighbors lost their house and abandoned their cats so I took him in. So I have four cats and I got laid off and they are helping me feed my cats great folks there. Great people! They are doing our city and county a great job although they seem to be overwhelmed like all city and county workers. They are doing a great job under the circumstances they have to work in

I wanted to adopt a kitten for Christmas so I went down to my local SDHS branch. I had already completed my online forms so I was in and out with my new kitten in only half an hour. I got to hold her and hear all about her. Shes already spayed, had all her vaccinations, and is dewormed ! Its an easy, wonderful way to get a forever pet .

This place is clean, not very large. I was here to make a donation of needed items and food. Sad that almost all of the pets were given up by their previous owners. Please come visit, volunteer or give. Most that I saw today are male. They also have rabbits and cats. Its good that its air conditioned and inside the building. The animals look well taken care of here.

Thank you El Cajon Animal Control. We were able to to reunite with our family dog that ran away but was found and brought to the shelter. When we got him back we could tell he was cared for lovingly. they examined him and took all the precautionary measures to ensure that he would be safe. Every penny was worth paying for and reasonable. If you have lost your pet and is at the shelter be prepared to take your ID a picture of your pets and money.

Horrible place that treats animals very poorly. We had turned in stray cats in that had taken up in the neighborhood, they said the cats were out eligible for adoption since they were our own housecats being surrendered. They took the cats in, now less than a week later these same cats show up at my house with half of their rights ears cut off. If I knew they would be dropped off at my house again after having their ears clipped, I would have just left them.

Im a foster with the humane society and have to go the shelter now and again. I would say that it always seems adequately staffed and the animals seem to be in good condition. Overall. They also try to place a good majority of their animals in foster homes so that they can have a normal home experience.

My husband and I adopted a cat from this facility, and about 2 weeks later we realized he was infested with fleas from the shelter. When calling to inform them about this, they said they’re aware that the cats have fleas and there’s nothing to be done about it. They’re just sending flea infested animals out to homes.My secondary concern is the health of the animals in this facility, as they have a pretty open secret about every animal being infested with fleas but they have absolutely no desire to address or fix the issue.I now have to spend my time and money to go through the hassle of disinfecting my house and quarantining my area that is potentially dangerous to not only myself, but my unborn child, as fleas can carry some serious diseases. Thanks so much!

I brought a cat in yesterday that showed up on my doorstep a couple months ago. I brought her in to see if she was micro chipped and if she didn’t belong to anyone I wanted to adopt her. It has been an incredibly stressful process trying to get this cat back. They transferred her. One person told me where they’d be yesterday. Another person today on the phone told me she was somewhere else. The next person said per protocol they’re not allowed to tell where the cat is going. every person I dealt with besides Jennifer was so rude and so ready to just get rid of you without helping. The priority should be the best interest of the animals. I was trying to stress to them that this cat has been with me for a couple months and she’s comfortable with me and should be reunited with me. I’ve made 50 calls between the shelters since yesterday trying to figure out where the cat is and how I can adopt her. I don’t know if the employees need to get paid more so they care more about their job, but they are dealing with animals and shouldn’t be working there if they don’t have any sympathy or empathy. AgainJennifer was very helpful. Ironically enough I adopted my cat stormy from here a year ago where they said he didn’t get along with other cats. He is literally experiencing anxiety from being away from the new cat that is literally becoming impossible to get back home to me. It seems like the adoptions go well and then any other topic you just don’t get helped

It was a busy place when I was there! Dogs being surrendered, which was sad to see some of them were just found. And dogs being adopted which was the best part. I was just there to get dog food for my dog. Its a lovely place. The employees are extremely helpful and very much seem to enjoy their job. My friend went in the back to see what was available for adoption on the dog side and sadly there are many pit bulls there. My son has one that is 15 years old and he is the bestest doggie ever made. There is even a little mini dog park outside.

Staff was really friendly they helped me through the process when I found a lost dog with no tags or chip and took him in. Most of the smaller breeds they put in foster homes so if you are looking for a smaller dog the options available for walk ins is very little. The staff is great, they keep so many notes about the animals when you ask. They said that they only euthanize an animal after all attempts to get them adopted have been exhausted or if they are having medical issues that are too much to cover. All their dogs are on the web so you can shop their inventory on line and go to the correct location. I wish all the shelters I visited were this great. Except for not finding a dog from them I have nothing but great things to say about their shelters.

This is the El Cajon location. They are a No Kill Shelter, we found a pit mix pup on the side of the road and took him here. The were nice and informative. They came and got him out of the truck and took him for a walk before taking him back to the kennels. Hes now on there lost and found list. The paper work was simple, I didnt have all the answers cause I just picked him up. His name was legend he was cute and sweet.

My daughter went to get information on obtaining a dog license as she is moving here. She went in and no one would help her. They knew she was there but still kept taking people that arrived after her in front of her. After 30 minutes she gave up. The receptionist at the Petsmart was very helpful and got us walked through the process and where to go online.

My dog got out for the first time and was picked up by the humane society in El Cajon. It was a horrible experience and although stressed out to the max the girls here are AMAZING! Some of the reviews on this place are comical. You cant take your dog to a kill shelter because its out of control and expect them to rehabilitate it, or not euthanize it after the prescribed amount of time. You cant expect it to be a pet hotel. If your animal escapes, is not chipped, and is brought to this shelter, it will be labeled a stray and subject to all the same requirements as any other random animal that is brought in. That means if it bites someone, it may get euthanized. I understand this is upsetting, but these are just the facts of life.That said, this has been the shelter from which my family adopted almost all of our pets when I was growing up. Ive been coming here since I was a little kid, selecting dogs and cats as needed for our rural property. Ive got some amazing pets from this shelter over the years. Its my go-to shelter when Im ready to have a pet. I just recently lost the mini poodle mix I adopted from this shelter almost 13 years ago, and she was absolutely the best dog.

I came in pretty close to last minute for a tabby cat I fell in love with online. I rushed from work and the workers were still very patient with me and explained everything about my new cat’s past history and temperament along with the typical care instructions. The only thing I don’t recommend is those cardboard carrier cases they sell. Just stop and get a carrying crate at the Pet Store down the street before picking up your cat. If not you might end up like me with a cat half out of a box in your passenger seat lol. Great experience overall.

**DO NOT AFFILIATE WITH THIS SHELTER**My boyfriend and I were looking to rehome a new pet into our loving home. We had put in an application for a dog and called the shelter the next day to set up a consultation to speak to the representative about the dog. The lady on the phone assured us that we were the first couple to call about this furbaby and that there would be no issue at all on us being first in line to speak to the dog trainer the next day. She then proceeded to tell us we had called at a perfect time and the next opening to speak to a dog trainer wouldn’t be for another couple weeks. We had scheduled our appointment for the next day and she told us she would give us a call if there was a cancellation earlier so we could get on the phone with the trainer earlier. The next day rolls around and we were waiting patiently for a phone call from the trainer, 30 minutes go by and still hadn’t heard anything. They finally gave us a call and had told us they had already found a new home for the dog. We told the dog trainer that we were assured we were the ONLY couple to call about this animal. She then said there must have been a mistake & sounded like she could care less about the situation. Dont get me wrong, we are happy to know that the dog was happily rehomed. But the communication could have definitely been a lot better, and they shouldn’t get people’s hopes up like that. It all seems sketchy and unprofessional. So please be aware, and know there are other shelters who would gladly work with you better then this shelter did with us.

We adopted our puppy (a 1 year old mutt) in June 2017. Shes sweet & happy & a blessing!I agree there isnt a lot of help. There was one awesome Everything lady. She was the only one helping 4 families meet & visit pets. I wish I could remember her name. She was working as quickly as able and didnt make us feel rushed when it was our turn.We love our pup & will start there if we decide to adopt again.

My son an I went in a week ago to look at cats, he found one he liked but it wasnt going to be available for adoption until the following week. We were told we were first on the list and we made an appointment to adopt him when he was available. We go in on the day and time our appointment was for only to find out that they already adopted him out. They had no documentation that we were first on the list and tried to argue with me about the information I received. They didnt seem to care too much.They clearly have NO ORGANIZATION and their front desk is run by a staff that has no idea what they are doing. No one wanted to take responsibility for this mishap, they kept blaming people that werent there to defend themselves. My son and I went home disappointed and without a cat.Im all for adopt dont shop, but if you choose to adopt here make sure they have all their sh*t together and contact them like crazy to make sure they have all of the correct information.

I dont get the negative comments. I adopted a 12 pound mutt here last October and found the customer service adequate. It wasnt the Hilton for animals but clean enough and the staff were friendly and accommodating. To the majority of the people complaining, please realize that these staff are doing a pretty good job while overworked and underpaid. They deal with people constantly wanting to adopt dogs that arent good fits for certain homes and then end up returning the dog to the pound. Be realistic. If you live in an apartment, dont try and adopt a 100lb dog. And if you have other dogs in the home, ALWAYS bring them for a meet and greet with your potential dog. Staff has attitude for a reason. Too many people adopting out of emotion and not logic so they have to play police a lot because people are dumb.

Everyhing was clean, open and airy. The enclosures were well designed....... with separate places for eating and sleeping. There were soft and cozy beds and blankets. The furry, litte inhabitants could be observed easily as they waited to go home with their forever families!💗💗💗

Regardless of the negative ratings on the El Cajon Animal Shelter this facility runs on contributions and donations. I have adopted 2 animals from here, and NOT ONCE have I had negative assistance. They are SUPER rude and disrespectful. The worse thing is when you need help and then you try and talk to them and they start giving you attitude. It is your JOB to help me when needed, you are getting PAYED to work here and help people when they need it. I would rather die than recommend this place to anyone. My kid saw this adorable cat and he asked the lady if it’s okay to see him and she literally started being rude to a 7 year old, like what the hell. My kid stormed out of the place and got inside the car crying to his father saying, “She was so rude, I wanted a cat and she yelled at me for no reason”. This shelter should be greatly valued. Cats are kept in a warm area and if you think its cold read the sign of the door Keep door closed.. so... Dogs are in open but DO IN FACT have heated floors. I have donated $40 worth of toys and i know they need more so donate. I HIGHLY recomend this shelter, i have brought home 2 dogs: a puppy and a elderly dog. I’ve adopted four dogs from here. Was not informed on ANY of their behaviorial issues (aggression towards humans and dogs, resource guarding etc) the most recent dog we adopted we had to return sadly. We were told he was a GSD mix but we had found out he was a Belgian Malinois mix(big difference between the breeds). We took him back and gave them all the information we got while the dog was in our care. When we went back to check on the dog we were informed that he was adopted back out and none of the information that we gave them was taken into consideration. We had highlighted some important things about this dog that the next owner should’ve known about but the lady with the red hair had told us that what we wrote doesn’t matter and was not passed to the new owner of this dog. I’m sorry but this place is poorly ran and the staff barely have any knowledge on dog behavior, dog training, or dog breeds in general I saw multiple miss labeled breeds. This was the first result that popped up on google for animal shelters in El Cajon and I called in a panic looking for two pit bulls that escaped. Initially, The receptionist was very helpful but my dogs were not there there. I then called other shelters and one was under ACES Foundation when I called it was in fact the El Cajon animal control. Officer was certainly friendly, professional, helpful, and approachable when she visited my house to handle the quarantine matter for my dogs. The most depressing shelter Ive ever been to. I cried when I left! The poor animals are not treated well at all. The facilities, cages, rooms, and litter boxes are a mess. The animals are not kept in good conditions (not enough padding, sitting directly on the wire cages, no AC, filthy) and the workers there dont even seem to care or give the pets any attention. Now I knew we would probably get questioned about it but I still expected theyd at least hear us out and let us explain at least that we still had plenty of space to keep a large dog happy. Call me naive I guess. So still under the pretense I could get a large dog we went to look at the kennels well here is surprise number one. Awful living conditions. I mean this was appalling. I felt so awful for the poor dogs and came across this 8 year old german shepherd. When I went to ask if we could see him they immediately told us no as we lived in an apartment and thatd be unfair to the dog so we go and look at this other dog that is smaller. Medium sized and 3 years old. They again tell us no as itll grow. Okay at 3? Its medium and will remain medium but they apparently felt we should only have a small dog even though I wanted a guard dog. We left and came across the Chula Vista Animal Facility. They were so sweet. They let us explain that my husband is deploying and I want a guard dog. We were led to the kennels that were so much nicer and were allowed to socialize with an adorable 1 year old German Shepherd. We adopted him with no trouble. They explained how to live in an apartment with a large dog and were very helpful. And they charge less than El Cajon too! Id recommend forget El Cajon and go to Chula Vista as El Cajon is prejudiced against anyone that doesnt own their own house. Catch that I said OWN. Not rent. The only good thing I found at El Cajon was the directions to Chula Vista. Thank you Chula Vista for caring for its dogs and customers!

Killed my dog without my consent. The heartbreak is unreal. I thought the shelter would help rehabilitate and find him a home, because they are part of a coalition working to decrease euthenasia. The person who brought my dog in was not the licensed owner and he did not have my permission to consent to euthenasia. Called to check on him 2 weeks after he was brought in and he was dead. I was pretty upset when I visited this Friday, I purchased an AKC registered AMSTAFF puppy and I want to be a good owner, so I figure while she is young I should get her a playmate so I dont have to worry about under socializing her to dogs. Tried to drop off stray kittens and refused cause it was on the wrong street in El Cajon. Sad to find a shelter not willing to help.

Fortunately there were not a lot of animals when I visited. The staff was somewhat helpful but it must be a generally depressing place to work.

Its been torn down & completely remodeled. Way better than ìt was 4 years ago.
