I had an emergency situation and race to Safeway to arrive by 11: 55. There are people walking out but the security guard tells me they are closed. I told him its only 11:56 You still have 4 minutes. He said Im sorry but were closing early for the workers. I explain that theres no point in having a closing time posted if you dont close at that time. It bothers me that Safeway lies to customers about their hours of operation. I would not have wasted my time driving across the city to get here had I known this would happen. I asked for the managers name and I was told it was Chanel. They told me they didnt know her last name. This poor type of customer service definitely needs to be addressed. Stores do not get paid to be closed

Armed security guards, merchandise behind glass doors, one way in one way out, security barriers at each register...... ***update i just read all the reviews and the owner is replying saying that he apologized for the inconvenience and im sorry to hear about your experience blah blah blah these reviews are over 6 months old, so please spare me your sympathy and do better then treating your customers like prisoners!

I will NEVER set foot in this store again! Once you are in, you are imprisoned inside the store! Don’t you dare have forgotten something in your car or just decided you didn’t need anything because you will have to either stand in line to escape or barge through the self checkout line and then you still can’t get out without a receipt!!! My husband was using the self service water machine and I needed to use the restroom. Walk back to the other end of the store and it needs a code!! No employees visible and no one at service desk. I hate this customer treatment.

I used to shop here occasionally when we needed items like toothpaste, coffee, alcohol, but they’ve added so much security plastic preventing access to items that I don’t want to go here anymore. The waiting for someone to come by to unlock it adds 5-15 minutes to every trip. Then, half of the time they bring the item directly to the register so you can’t inspect it and have to go to a specific register to check out or wait in line to ask the register to give you your items. One time someone grabbed the completely wrong product for me but I only found out at the register. Another time I apparently pointed out the wrong item but I didn’t realize because the staff member took it straight to the register and I never got a close look at it. Horrible shopping experience. Why should we have to pay for other people’s crimes? This is going to lose Safeway my business at the least.

This store has no understanding of what basic customer service means. Every time I shop here is the same terrible experience. No shopping carts available, the parking lot is dirty. Inside everything is caged or kept behind locked display cases. They have more security standing around than cashiers available. The employees dont give a flying F about the customers. Your management needs to do their job or leave so the right person can make a difference.

Really nice store. Lovely to go late-night to avoid crowds, though frequently the stocking-before-close can really be in the way, with a lot of items strewn on the ground that pose tripping and slipping hazards.That said, a really nice staff, great 50% off section, and generally strong array of choices.Edit as of 02/2023-- they seem to have reduced the stocking before closing significantly. Yay!

Locked into store, with only 1 entrance and exit. Makes it hard to navigate if you didnt purchase anything, or forgot cart. This store makes everyone feel like a criminal and charges sky high prices. It is pretty though.

Please talk to your security guard to behave in a professional manner.Maybe you should move the fruit blow stand away from the entrance gate because the security guard got confused thought I was gonna exit the wrong way and started yelling.. This store makes me really sad. Im always ready for discrimination, feeling uncomfortable and rude, biased employees and Im not wrong.How hard is it to just do your job? You are not paid to discriminate against people. Youre literally paid money to be nice. Paid money.My husband and I are disabled and interracial and were used to be hated but Safeway, do better. There were 4 people waiting in line at the deli in the afternoon. The lady working behind the counter ignored all of us while doing her own thing. When someone tried to get her attention, she told her to go down the counter to get help. No one was there either. Lots of workers just standing around doing nothing. My cashier was great though.

Almost every time I visit this store there are extremely long lines at the registers. they have 15 or so registers and 3 of them are open, not counting the self check lines. They even have the nerve to fly signs that say if there are 3 or more people in line that they will open another register. The photo below shows all of the folks in line and all of the light up register numbers not lit. There were probably 20 customers in each line. What a Joke! i will take my business elsewhere.The workers at the registers are great and do their best. Come on Safeway you greedy corporate machine take care of your customers and more importantly your workers.PS your produce sucks and it is overpriced!

Always has the freshest foods especially cut up fruits. Great hours at the El cerrito location.UPDATE: So this location is a really beautiful store, until you enter the restrooms. I dont understand why any public restroom needs to stay so filthy. They should be checked I believe its every hour to ensure its cleanliness and to help prevent the spread of germs and disease, but its always so dirty and gross. It didnt have seat covers, toilet paper all over entire bathroom floor, and I dont really want to know what was smeared all over both stall walls. Its inexcusable for restrooms to be available to the public in such conditions. Safeway brings in enough money on the daily to be able to afford extra bodies in the store to cover things like this where it can be kept clean all day every day, but they are too cheap to do so. Customers are lucky enough to have more than one cashier at peak times, so I guess thats where the store falls short. Safeway, please clean your restrooms more often! II wanted more pictures but too many people needing to use facility.

As I was working on a doordash order, and was confused as in where to get the order from. This super nice lady named Dora that was cleaning seen that I was confused and went out of her way to ask me if I needed some help. She ended helping me out by telling me where to go and going to the back to look for my orders. She honestly deserves a raise since it’s hard to find good people that go out of their way to help someone else.

Every time I come here the self checkouts make this experience a -1/10.The one way in one way out nonsense? Youre clogging up lines and the only way out is through a 2 and a half foot exit gate at the end of the self checkouts.Im done coming here. Its such a miserable experience. Not worth the hassle.I feel sorry for your employees who have to enforce this garbage. Leave it to corporate to make poor decisions that negatively effect everybody who isnt in a conference room with a suit and tie. This is the most incompetent Safeway I have ever visited! I placed an order for the bakery over the phone. The gentleman took my order and confirmed I could pick up my order the following evening. I showed up at the store and they claimed to have not received my order. Store team members spent 15 mins running around looking for my order. They told me I should have placed my order online over the app or in person when I arrived at the store. They then proceeded to tell me they were having issues with online orders. If I had to place the order online or in person then why did one of the employees the day before take my order over the phone? The manager, Tiffany, was also unhelpful and basically said there was nothing she could do. I could take the basic cupcakes that were available or get nothing at all. There was no additional effort made to try to rectify the situation. Now my niece will have no birthday cupcakes to celebrate with her class since no other bakeries are still open to fill the custom order by the next morning. If this is the standard of training and customer service, I will not be purchasing anything from any Safeway bakery anymore.

Despite the upward consolidation pressures in the grocery business, Safeway remains a fairly solid value if you are willing to shop a bit. I use the Safeway app religiously - yes, of course it tracks you, but if you are at least semi regular it will start offering you deals on what you repeat buy to draw you in and there is nothing wrong with that! Combine that with the Club specials and you can trim 20% or more off your bill at the register if you are disciplined. The Safeway Select stuff can be surprisingly light on the additives - check their ice cream out; I think it looks a lot closer to real food than most anything else similar in the freezers. They have an organic section in the produce. Take a close look at the meats and you may find something that looks good for a reasonable price. We are blessed with some very high quality grocers and specialty stores in this area, but when constrained by time or budget I feel I find healthy values here. Further, the deli sandwiches and other goodies are food that is tasty and will keep you going while you are out and about. Also, if you drive a car, the ten or twenty cent per gallon discount on Chevron fuels via the app is a great deal, and as a past pro mechanic who still keeps his hand in, the Chevron fuel additives, whatever they currently choose to call them, really do work toward keeping your fuel system clean and working well. Ive only worked with an in-store pharmacist once, but they were very on the ball and diligent; I had total confidence.

This place feels like a prison now. People going around without any grocery should have an easy access. Hire more people for a better service. This Safeway is trying to make this area look bad. After opening Safeway App to see the coupons, I lost my phone. I double checked the place where I have been and asked related people, the answers all were No. You know, nowadays nobody will return a phone that picked it up by himself. I was almost despairing.Ms. Heysia Escobar showed up. she asked her co-workers was there anyone looking for phone? Quickly, she showed the phone to me, let me use my fingerprint to open it and tell me the reason. Im very touched, want to see the finder, but he/she already left. I want to reward some money to thanks, but Heysia kindly refused.I from my heart to appreciate the unknown-name employee. he/she is so honest and has a very good work ethic. Its very precious! Also I appreciate and admire Heysia Escobar. She received information and reacted at first time, resolved the problem calmly. (I was tired, confused, anger, anxious and emotional at that time) She knows computer very well, corrected the mistakes of my transaction expertly....Obviously, both guys have been well trained and practiced. What they do reflects the quality of the team at the store.

Now, with the security gates locking you in, higher prices, and longer lines... and all the self-checkout lines shut down early evening...Its quite clear that they dont care about customers at all. Ive been coming here for a couple years now. Service always is bad and anytime I need something that is locked, i have to wait between 20 - 40 minutes. The funny thing is that when I walk to the front to ask for more help after pushing the button 4 times, theres usually 4-5 employees talking to each other. I made a visit today and did my usual shopping, which was normal as all shopping trips are, but it was when I got to the checkout lane where my experience was bad. The cashier in the lane, Tanisha, seemed nice(based on how she was treating the other customers in front of us), however when It was my turn there were no words. I even said Hi, how are you and got no response. Now Im not sure what the reason was, but it felt like racism as I was the only Indian in the lane. I use the online order and pickup service. I would give them a better rating, but the experience I have in the parking lot is pretty bad. There are only 4 spaces to park for the service, and they are almost always full of cars of people doing their regular shopping. Id be happy to see them add more spaces. Ive only had items missing once, and was refunded fairly quickly. The staff are always nice, and I appreciate them. Its the management I dont care for, and they need to have someone patrolling the parking lot, as well as inside the store.

On August 4th, 2022, 12:10pm, I tried getting a sandwich from the deli but the deli clerk told me that the person in front of me was there last customer and they would be able to serve me. I thought that was strange so then I tried getting a half pint of coldsaw and mac salad but the clerks just ignored me and actually helped another customer. I informed the manger and she did told me that she had spoken to the deli clerk to assist customers even though they were short staff but by the time that I walked back to the deli section there was a line. Since I was on my lunch break, l decided to leave and take my business somewhere near by. The manager also presented kind of harsh, making an excuse of why she had to remind the deli clerk to service us. I dont think that was necessary on her part. Im going to make a formal complaint.

I’ve just never seen a store in my life that wants to inconvenience its customers more than this one. I’m currently in a 15 person line at 10pm on a Saturday night as they only have one checker and they’ve shut off the self checkout machines 2 hours before close for some reason. On top of this, EVERYTHING in the personal care aisle is locked. Deodorant? Locked. Vitamins? Locked. I recently moved to el cerrito but I will always go to Lucky even though it’s an extra 5-10 minutes for me to get to. Every time I try to give this store a chance, they always find a way to disappoint. Just want to add on, the staff is nice and it’s not their fault at all for any of the issues here.

The absolute worst Safeway Ive ever experienced and I hate writing bad reviews. The store itself seemed fine, but the restrooms were absolutely atrocious. They were filthy and looked as if theyd never been cleaned before. There were two stalls, but there werent any seat covers in one and the toilet paper was jammed inside the holder. After waiting for access to the only other stall I entered and found the seat covers on the floor and the toilet paper on top of the holder. The floors were stained and something red was smeared on the wall by the door. (Disturbing.) After exiting the stall I unfortunately found the soap container almost empty and on the floor. There were paper towels, but that was the only positive part of the whole experience. Definitely try to hold it in if you shop here, its not worth using the bathrooms. Just awful.

Most of the staff are not courteous and do not care and will not hear customers complaint. Usually only new staff are being helpful. A nice & big Safeway with a separate eating area next to the deli/prepared- foods section, which offers a good array of ready-to-eat items, from tasty fried chicken to salads and even standard Chinese food (chow me in, bbq pork, etc). Even the self checkout has long lines, since at least a couple of self-check kiosks are always out of service. I am almost always a complete night shopper and i am so glad that they stay open late. The cashiers are always very pleasant! the checkout takes a bit long during regular hours, but that is completely normal and i cant blame them. The only thing that bugs me sometimes is the lack of staff that are around to help the customers around the store. For example a friend of mine wanted a bottle of liquor and it took them about 10 mins to get someone up to the isle. And he actually had to ask two different employees since the first one took too long. The Armpit Of SafewayDreadful!! The design of the parking lot is horrendous so you arent even inside and the place is already stressful. The design on the inside is just as bad - poor lighting and narrow isle. The color scheme is crap as well. Whoever they paid to design this place really screwed them over good. I cant think of a single area where these guys are doing a decent job. They are short staffed and the few staff they have are unfriendly and unhelpful. Forget about getting something from the deli unless you brought a copy of War and Peace to read while you wait. The 2 staff in that dept only have 2 speeds: SLOW or STOP. The checkout line isnt any better. You know the drill, 15 registers but only 3 are open and theres almost never any baggers so get ready to bag your own groceries. A 20-30 minute wait to check out is not unusual. Also this is the go to place for street people for some reason so be prepared to be hassled and hit up for money going in and coming out. The frozen food section is in the middle of the store so your food is thawing out as you shop the remaining isle in whatever direction youre going. (Luckys wisely has the frozen section on the end so you can hit it last before you check out). Also, the place just reeks of the Dark Side of The Force for some reason. There is a ton of negative energy here that just lays across your shoulders like wet blanket. You just cant wait to get done and get the hell out.

Ive been coming here for about a year and a half, and on the whole it is a thoroughly unpleasant experience. The entire store is consistently understaffed regardless of the time of day. Going through checkout is an exercise in frustration since they often dont have a bagger for most lines and are already running low on clerks. The clerks who do work there are often much slower than they could be. Its fine to make small talk when there is a small line, but when theres only two lines open and fifteen people in each waiting to check out, it isnt a good time to talk to each customer for five minutes. The self-checkout area is a complete joke. They refuse to give you bags until after you fully ring up which wastes everyones time while you bag up after you are finished instead of while ringing it up. The layout for the store is also haphazard and things that would logically be grouped together are often far apart (such as dairy items like milk and butter, bread, meats, etc). Often sections are ill-stocked and when they are things can often be in the wrong section.On the whole, Id recommend staying away from this location unless you live very close to it. If you do, be prepared for frustration.

Not that great. The deli people arent very nice. I learned about shopping in the hood here. I once went in to buy lunch picked up sushi and wanted to look around the store and buy more but learned in hood Safeways you cant. That was a turn off because I might have seen something better and be wanted to change my mind. It made me feel the store was unsafe and getting robbed or something. In the Safeways I normally shop at are friendly and you can pick up whatever and want around the store and not treated like a theft.

I like shopping here on Sundays: fresh fruits and veggies. Unlike their competitors, the meat/seafood department is well-stocked, early. The delta: in certain sections of the store (health/beauty & liquor), have to have an employee unlock a shelf case to get what you need.

Its pretty good if youre enrolled for their savings card program. Sometimes the lines are long. Three stars because they have an entire row of things like toothpaste, shaving gear, shampoo, Etc locked up and getting an associate to unlock the cabinet is a pain in the ass and takes a bunch of extra time. They do it because theyve had problems with theft. Most all of those items I wait and go to CVS Pharmacy.

Its a nightmare to shop there after 5pm . It gets to crowded!!! This store Is big. They have 14 checkouts only 3 are ever open. No joke. Im being honest. So I also shop at the pet food supply next door and everyone brings their pooch to size them for whatever they are buying. I went into Safeway and I pass the self check to here some lady yell hey no dogs in here!!!!! Thats embarrassing since theres always little dogs with their owners shopping. I like Safeway a lot, but i think they need to come back down to reality... Prices are too high on products in this store. Convenient place to shop but it feels kind of unsafe at times. There is a lot of selections and departments and for the most part the employees are friendly. The shopping center has smaller shops around it such as subway, a pet food store, barbershop,etc and it is conveniently located dead center to all commuting agencies such as the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station, AC Transit, West Cat, etc.

I use to love this Safeway but not anymore. Bathrooms have been vandalized--no toilet paper dispensers--torn off wall, no soap and just a big roll of paper towels left on diaper changer. Shelves in store are half empty. Soda machine doesnt work. Bagels are almost completely gone shortly after lunch--bakery section has gone downhill also. Came in to pick up some advertised meat special but none in meat counter. Asked for raincheck but eventually they marked down something close to whats on sale. Mentioned to clerk that store has gone downhill and he just mumbled a lot of things have happened to the store and not in a good tone. Sad to see this Safeway look so run down.

I avoid this place like the plague!!! There is so much rampant crime there that I would rather shop at Costco. Half the items are in the store is sitting behind locked cabinets and takes forever to get a customer service to retrieve the item. Security is non existent playing favor to the thugs that rob it blind. I know theres a pandemic, but it seems as if Safeway is hiring off the street. They have a young lady that is a cashier who was VERY unprofessional. She and another young lady were having inappropriate conversations in front of customers. At one point, the cashier (Samiya) stopped scanning my groceries and young lady she was having casual conversation with the cashier and using inappropriate language. Just sad! It was as if there were no supervision!

Terrible customer service at Starbucks.Older women said shell be right back was gone for 15 min. She had 3 customer waiting the EMT guy was pissed so he just left. All other workers was just standing around not asking us if we need help. When she finally came back the coffee was cold and her attitude sucks. She was working Tuesday morning. This store sucks. The lines are always a mile long. Safeway is trying skimp on labor costs and as a result, you can plan to spend a half hour in line any time you go in here during peak hours. I avoid shopping here as much as possible, but it is convenient to my BART commute so occasionally I make the mistake of going back in there and being reminded of why this place sucks so much.On several occasions I have had really friendly hard-working checkers who are doing their best to move the lines through, and I applaud their work ethic. But the fact of the matter is this is one of the most expensive grocery stores in town, and has by far, always the longest lines.If you can shop anywhere else in El Cerrito, do yourself a favor and avoid this under-staffed craphole. If you must go here, pack your patience. And maybe bring a book to read while youre in line.

Lines too long. Never enough cashiers. Right hand side entrance is nearly always closed causing more problems on the other side. Toothbrush/paste/shaving cream/deodorant/etc are all locked behind glass. I miss the old El Cerrito location. I prefer and drive to the Albany and Berkeley locations.

I am upset about the customer service. The Caucasian lady wasn’t even doing anything, and she said: it was closed, when couple of minutes, I called ahead and asked about the customer service hours. And they were open. I asked a cashier and he said it depends if it was busy or because the pandemic. Just excuses. This is the WORST store. Do not shop here if you can help it. All sundries and medications are behind lock and key and you have to wait forever for someone to come and unlock a cabinet for you. The pharmacy can be 100 times worse than the post office. Slow pharmacists do not look to next guest with eye contact or to let you know how long it may be to wait. This is a 3rd world market. Couple observations from my shopping trip yesterday. Tshirt selling booth set up right in front of the only entrance/exit. Tshirt sellers not wearing masks in the now completely crowded entry. No cart cleaner present anymore and no supplies to do it ourselves. Walk in the door and three security guards standing right there. Why cant you open the other door with that many guards on duty? As usual, long lines at the limited number of registers open and the cashier talked nonstop about how sub par the other workers were. Icing on the cake were the homeless panhandling in the parking lot.

I like Safeway, however can fruit be organic if man starts rearranging how or if it breeds. Seedless watermelon and grapes I dont trust it. Just to be fair they are not the only ones. Other than that and groceries almost a mortgage payment it good all the different varieties of things we eat. Something is wrong with the produce, looks ok, hardly any smell to the fruit. The store itself is nice, however, at checkout the checker and I were threatened, (for no apparent reason), in the afternoon by a mentally ill male for 8 minutes before security showed up. Six weeks later a Hispanic male made violent gestures towards others in the store; the El Cerito Police, (4 officers), arrived 15 minutes later and arrested him. Bagging assistance is scarce and getting their assistance for the elderly, (me), is non-existent. Venturing to/ from parking lot and store is at best a challenge due to instances encountered and described above.

Apparently, one doesn’t have to wear a mask in this Safeway location. A stoned looking person shopping without a face covering was asked by me to wear a mask. She replied “no s—t!” I complained to security and they told me they couldn’t enforce the “mask mandate”. No Safeway employee seemed to care. With the beginning of a new COVID surge I will have to think twice about shopping here.
