Dangerous environment. Safeway no longer seems to provide security for the parking lot. Break-ins are frequent. Criminals operate freely with impunity as Oakland PD will not come out, being defunded and overwhelmed, as well as lack of security from Safeway.

One of the more roomy stores in this vicinity. Decent selection, and I feel safer than in other locations. Also, not too long lines at checkout. Lots of rooftop parking and a great produce dept.

First time I placed a To Go order, and unbelievably the Safeway on College Ave messed it up. My order was large. I spent over $220, so when they brought the bags to the car, there were several bags: no way for me to know then they forgot a bag. I called the store after I put away the groceries, to let them know. They found the bag but no offer to deliver it. I drove all tbe way back to the store, and they gave me my bag and a $5 discount card. Why I appreciate the card, $5 was an insult, considering it took at least that in gas let alone 35 minutes of my time. I have no faith in their To Go service.

Says its open until 2am but that is incorrect and if you go at 1:30 the security guard will push all the elevator buttons for you like a funky ghost and then dramatically shout at you that youre trespassing and have been recorded because you walked up to the door and realized it was closed and then left 🤣🤣 10/10 for the funky ghost security guard who took their job very seriously 1 star removed for the hours needing to be made accurate online

The new security measures are too much, but what really is frustrating is that 3 times I have come here to get something from the pharmacy area that’s locked. I pressed the button to have an employee come unlock it and no one ever came, every time. This store also never has enough checkstands open. Self checkout is great but if you need help or approval at self checkout, good luck. There aren’t always employees there to help you. Then, you have to scan your receipt at self checkout in order to leave. Everything takes so much longer at this store now.

My experiences at the store with the employees and the quality of the products I have never been an issue for me. However, what is an issue is when I drive out of my way and online they say theyre open until 2 a.m. ... And they are not. So would somebody kindly change the hours to the correct closing time?? Perhaps these are the hours of covid-19, come on guys... Covid has been going on for a year-and-a-half now. I think that has given you ample time to post the correct hours. I dont know if you as employees notice, but even in just the five minutes or so I was outside taking pictures for this review, five or six people walked up to the doors to come to the same sad conclusion I had. I am not pleased! (And Im not the only one!)

Safeway is the absolute worst grocery store in the state. The prices are high, the stock is consistently bad. The lines are long, they ask you to pay for a bag even though everything youre buying comes in plastic anyways.

Great Safeway. Well run. Not like the one on pleasant valley and Broadway, where the executive staff of Safeway, make four employees run the entire store, while 100 people are waiting to get checked out.Not fair to the employees.The employees are great?Safeway, listen. Stop short staffing these stores to make money. We know whose fault it is and its not the workers there.This store on college avenue, on the other hand being about 1/4 the size, had six check out people working to keep things flowing.Kudos to Safeway workers!Thumbs down to Safeway managerial executive management or whoevers responsible in their ivory towers. The new policy about alcohol it’s wrong. Safeway cashier have to ask the ID only for the person who’s buying alcohol not the group of people if they come together ( if you go with your kids to do shopping they will ID the whole family) it’s a joke . Guys you need to follow the state laws.

This is a review for the Safeway at College St in Berkeley.Not the biggest store of the chain but you will find the most popular products you may need!Clean store and parking!Parking is above the store and the entrance is by Claremont Ave.Did not see any empty self and found couple products I dont usually see at the store I usually go.I definitely suggest this store for a quick shopping.If you want a full size store and that is open until 2 AM (as per my latest info from the store hours) should go to Broadway /51 Street in Oakland!

I would rather drive a town over than go to this shell of a store. From the poorly stocked shelves to the absence of carts, this store makes me feel more like a prisoner than a customer.Twice Ive been locked behind their gate system with no employee in sight to let me out because either Ive had my cart stolen from me (my items removed and put on the floor while I was shopping) or forgot something from my car.Thats not even counting the frequent break ins in their parking lot.Shutter this store and start over.

On May 27th I stopped by here for shrimp Dumplings, Tiger Tempura Roll, Lemon Parfait & a $2 bottle of water, next morning I see my debit card got jacked for $246. You guys need to fix this pronto, thank the Almighty technology gods there was a record on the app. Apparently someone will investigate this, review camera footage and make it right.I could be done with Safeway folks.Thanks Courtney for taking the time to make this right, youve restored my faith. The gates ruin anything good you feel trapped and don’t dare try to exit through where you entered if you happen to not be purchasing anything bc you’ll be treated like a thief. I tried to walk out to get Starbucks which is outside of the gates and they made me walk all the way around to self checkout where I had to again explain why I wasn’t buying anything — not cool & seems like a serious fire hazard or any emergency… I don’t care if people steal why should the majority of customers who don’t have to deal w that??

Was there the other night and saw a giant rat scurry along under the cake display into the bakery…It reminded me of the time (like a month ago) I saw a cockroach bigger than my thumb **in this very same Safeway** - in the middle of the day!Both these critters seemed totally at home, unhurried, and fairly healthy.I don’t even go here that often, so we’re talking like 1:4 odds recently of seeing things you don’t wanna see at your local grocery store.Somebody should do something about that. Terrible service.. I am so glad I get to review this store.. I came home upset because the Clerk was so rude. Our veggie tray opened up and spilled on the checkout line and the clerk would not help me get another one. I was with my elderly sick father in law who was clearly confused about the incident and the Clerk refused to help me get another tray. He told me he didnt know where they were located after I asked for help. I asked if ANYONE could help and he said NO.. I had to leave my sick father inlaw(alzheimer) alone while I ran to the opposite side of the store to get a fresh veggie tray. The store should be ashamed to not offer help to a sick elderly man.. grrrr

Me and my friends went to the place to get some donuts, fried chicken and sushi, the donuts are undercooked, you can still taste the dough, the rice in the sushi are chewy and tough, while the fried chicken is salty. Im sorry that we spent almost $40 for low quality food. If they could have paid more attention on the food and their staff. There are so many supermarkets nearby offers higher quality food and lower prices. Bye 👋

Nice staff and managers, generally well stocked.HOWEVER, they need a full-time security guard on the roof parking lot who actually pays attention. Had a car burgled in the middle of the day (nothing was inside), and it was clear from the cars video they were pros cruising the lot. An adequate guard would have seen it.

Good place to grab grocery or whatever you need really! I also go here for the Starbucks inside which is great. The only thing I would complain about is the fact that there is zero cell phone service inside which can be a problem when trying to look up products but overall is a good standard grocery store! EDIT: there has been many car break-ins at this location lately. I would avoid this store or make sure you are quick and don’t have any belongings in the car AT ALL.

Im sorry that there are bad people in the world that steal from you, but having a gate at the self check where you have to scan your receipt is just rediculous. What if there is an emergency? Thats just not safe. Change your name SAFEway.Update: Ive been avoiding this place as much as possible, but it has a few things that I cant get at Trader Joes. I went in today and the security features are even worse!! Every unused check out aisle is blocked off with heavy gates. On top of this the check out lines were insane! This was my favorite Safeway to shop at up until a few months ago….what’s going on with the checkers?!?! They are extremely slow! I understand good help is hard to find lately but this is bad! I have been bagging my own items to speed up the process but it’s still painfully slow. Hopefully they figure out how to encourage their employees to move at a faster pace so they can be the 5 star store they once were.

DO NOT ENTER this store, ESPECIALLY if you arent dead-set on purchasing something.Was an solid-ok location before they locked it down into a maximum security prison…I get crime prevention, but they went full destroy the customer experience mode (if not creating a hostage & fire hazard situation), where anyone who enters is considered a potential criminal and there is no quick in-and-out for any transaction. And in spite of all the automatic gates and barriers erected just to guard some baby formula and detergent, the security guards are just as incompetent and distracted as they were before. The parking lot above and plaza outside the entrance remain completely unstaffed and unmonitored - both tend to attract weirdos who want to bother passing shoppers.Safeway are the bottom feeders of the grocery world. Overpriced, subpar in quality, and now irrationally scared of their own community & customer base. Spending money on flashy measures that accomplish nothing productive.Not being hyperbolic when I say this is the worst grocery shopping experience around. Save yourself the pain & suspicion and go to a Berkeley Bowl, Trader Joe’s, or Sprouts, or the local market right across the street before you give any money to this for-profit prison.

(update no longer a 24 hour Safeway store).Who remembers when the front was a parking lot with a 76 gas station on the corner? How many years ago was that? 20 years? That store was dusty. This one is not. Huge produce department. Full of college students on the weekends. Parking on roof top is a high frequency smash and grab spot.

A brief scan of their policy would have been a quick solve but theyd rather inconvenience costumers instead. I support strict policies but not idiotic people in charge of applying those policies.

Safeway has a great price on meats and many items. I am regular. I shop there 2-3 times a week.. They open so late. I love it so much! But I gave 4 stars because they have the worst, unfriendly, and VERY SLOW check out. It is awful. I try to use self check out whenever I can. If you buy alcohol items, you cant do self check out because they have to check id which is understandable. Just wish the store would improve about staff.

Forcing customers to show a receipt to exit is illegal in California absent a membership agreement (like Costco) or specific reasonable suspicion that a person has shoplifted. This is the best Safeway I have ever been to. Large space that is filled with products, fresh produce (although you can see that there is no large variety, which wasn’t expected, this being a Safeway supermarket), a good deli (although the roti chicken I got was overcooked and dry - not sure if it was the way they cooked it, or if it had been sitting at the warm shelf for hours, but in any case not great), a great selection of wines, a good looking offering of fresh meat, and, in general, everything else looked great, clean, and updated. 180 degrees difference from other Safeway branches. Be very careful using the self check out here. I was just there, and when prompted for cash back I tried selecting none but the machine froze for a few seconds, then continued on as normal. Its lucky I was bagging things still because all of a sudden the machine spit out $60 bucks. Sure enough on my receipt it said I had selected $60 dollars cash back. I assure you that I did not select this option. Cant say for sure, but this may be a very clever hack in action to get your money after you leave. There was a long enough delay between when the transaction closed and when the money was dispensed that had I not been bagging things, Id have turned my back and left the money there. Just proceed with caution; with all automated things but especially the self checkouts here.

I used to shop at this Safeway until I was told to take my scooter with me 🤷‍♂️Dozens of times I have locked my little scooter to the fence upstairs, out of the way between the elevator and stairs. Where I often see bikes and scooters locked (so I assumed this was where I should)Tonight I was locking the scooter up and the security guard said:Sir! Remodeled approx 5-7 yrs ago, this store is spacious and clean with ample parking...located in a quiet Berkeley neighborhood. You can check yourself out, or stand in line for a cashier. The food here is fresh and they offer a wide variety of various food brands.

Consistently NOT open past 11 pm or 12. Got in late and wanted to grab some groceries for the next day. The store is not open until 2 am, they close much earlier it seems. Several other potential customers came up to the door and realized it too. Please correct the hours if its not actually open that late. Ive attempted to come here multiple times over the last few months at 11 or 12 and its been closed. At first I assumed maybe it was closed early randomly but it seems consistent.

Security gates have been added, so leaving the building without a receipt means you need permission to leave from staff or risk setting off the alarm. I also found out from the store manager that the higher prices are paying for the bagging, which means anyone going through self checkout and bagging themselves is being overcharged. This has caused me to begin really shopping around for the best prices since I always bag myself.

Immense store-- almost large enough to get lost in-- with what seems to be a comprehensive selection of products of all sorts. Ive always walked to and from, so I cant speak to the parking situation but the store has a parking garage on top. The 51B bus line takes you to and from Safeway, so the location is convenient and in a nice neighborhood. The store is large with a variety of items. However, Wifi and cellular data both don’t work inside the store.

Nicest Safeway Ive ever visited! The shopping carts are designed with a cup holder and phone holder (great for looking at your digital grocery list) and the sides are shallower which makes shopping easier. With the card, this store has really good deals. The only downside is their bakery. Everything weve bought from the bakery is kinda gross. I bought a cake for my 1yos birthday. She spit out the icing. Even my 4yo said the frosting was gross! We threw it away.The parking lot is nice and Id definitely return again

Great that its 24hrs... but other than that, the workers dont have the best customer service (they often seem in a bad mood, even when I thank them at check out), and the store layout is compact, making it hard to navigate shopping carts when busy. Also, the produce isnt always the freshest (e.g. bell peppers often look wrinkled, like they are getting old), and lastly, though open 24 hrs, they never have more than 1-2 check stands open at night, making for long lines (yes though it is midnight, there are still many people out buying things here).

While checking out today, we had to wait about 10-15 minutes for them to get a manager override. Shocked that it took so long in the middle of the afternoon, the manager was apparently in the back and wouldn’t even come out. I like that this store is on the way to home but the service is always hit and miss. They like to interact with each other(employees) that interrupts them from whatever they are doing. This is not the first time this happen where one of my item did not make it into the bag. This time I notice an item still not in my bag and she is already giving me my receipt. I asked if it is mine or the person behind me. The customer said it’s not his so definitely mine. Instead of checking my receipt if she already charge me, she scanned it again so I have to pay extra couple bucks for it. I did not find this out till I got home of course. I’m in the hospitality/customer service as well and this a no no attitude at work. I do interact with guest and colleague but the main focus is the customer. Come on Safeway, get your act together!!! Do I have to go to other stores to shop now? Cause I can. I have a lot of option near you. Just saying!!Update: I was just browsing some of the reviews. A lot is saying they need more cashiers. True!!!! Good ones please!!! And a lot just give 1 or 2 stars and not even worth their time leaving comments anymore but the stars do explain a lot. There is more no comments actually than us whose saying something. The worst review you get from consumer/customer/ guests is the silent once’s cause you would not know how to fix the issue or matter to better your service. This is not my favorite Safeway in the Bay Area. It has a small cheese section, no deli. Eggs are not all in one place. Produce not fresh. Everything is arranged weird. As I arrived in the store, I was told the electricity was out. I decided to shop anyway. It came on 10 minutes later and all customers were given a 10% discount.

Kind of cramped, not a lot of parking, not all the employees wear masks all the time, there is NO cell phone reception, and I havent been able to get on their wifi, so I can never look at online lists, look up products, clip digital coupons, or contact my family members while Im in any part of the building, very frustrating, decent selection though, and lots of good little sandwiches

I remember the first time I went to Safeway in Berkeley it mustve been either the 20th or 21st of July 1 or 2 days before my mom came back from Atlanta. and it was great, I had a shopping list of my Granddads stuff and my stuff. my step father took me there and as soon as I went in there I got down to business. and when I tell you that I was on it I was really on it. I got everything on the list even my stuff, but I didnt get too much, because I felt like I didnt need all that stuff. because I was so busy getting all of my stuff for my granddad that I almost didnt even have time to go get my stuff. it was kinda hard to keep our stuff spaced out away from each other. anyway, my experience there was great by the way hopefully Ill get to comeback and shop more.👍

My advice is go somewhere else. This stores been deliberately organized in a way that forces you to walk through the entire store on almost any visit. Rooftop parking is at times non-existent, and the only way down is an industrial lift or a long staircase. This Safeway got so much better when it was renovated. Things were kind of hard to find at first but its great to have this Safeway open again and alleviate some of the shopping pressure off of Trader Joes. Things are still a tiny bit hard to find: the aisles are not organized intuitively but its fantastic for having a store open 24 hours a day. What can one say? Safeway is Safeway! This one is not especially better or worse than any other Safeway. It has all the usual items we expect Safeway to have. You will find lots of cans and cereals and paper towels and tomato sauces. It has the usual baked goods, cheese selection, and butcher. What does distinguish this Safeway for many others I have visited is the small plaza they built at a time when lots of people could gather in a socially not very distant way. Today there are no chairs just a few tables that are cemented to the floor. However, being able to sit in the plaza and watch people go bye really makes sheltering in place a lot easier. So thanks Safeway for thinking of the community when you designed this store!

Safeway continues to under-staff the check out registers to the extent that they could double the number of open registers and still have lines forming. The only good thing is its 24 hrs. No one working at checkout or any way to call for them. They never gave me one of my bags. I didnt even think there was a second bag because all my items could easily fit in one. I was even standing right there for a really long time after I checked out because I was waiting for my friend, and they never gave me my other bag. It is unfortunate they don’t maintain this place which is heavily used but not cleaned. :-(. Cashiers in self checkout pay no attention, spend time talking and being distracted instead of monitoring and resetting checkout stands when necessary. There are long lines for both regular and self checkout and the inattention makes for a frustrating experience.

Safeway always seems to have a more than adequate selection of products at seemingly competitive prices. Vegetable prices seem to be rising to the expensive level compared to Smart&Final, Sprouts etc. Deli and Bakery departments offer a good selection at very reasonable prices. Meat and fish department has a good selection of quality products...and realistically priced.Parking often just sucks...but if your patient and willing to circle around a bit, you can always find something. But watch for crazies backing out with no concern of whats behind them. Be patient with parkers that seem to simple believe the white lines in parking spots are meant to be Straddled. And of course the ultra-priviliged who think the open parking spot next to them is there to put their empty cart in to avoid having to bother finding a cart return area.

Make sure to walk left from the elevator if going late at night, as the first entrance from the elevator is closed at night, but don’t mistake the entire Safeway as closed! For example, the yogurt aisle/area at most Safeways has maybe 50-100 different varieties - the one here had maybe 10-15? This one is huge and you can find anything you are looking g for and some. I was like a kid in a candy store. Had a very good experience, especially from the women at the pharmacy.

This Safeway (6310 College Ave, Berkeley, CA) is open 24/7 and took 1.5 years to rebuild and expand with rooftop parking and elevator to store on ground level. Grand re-opening was in 2015. The bakery is a favorite of mine. If youre an insomniac like me and love fresh baked bread, pick up warm rolls, baguettes or French bread as early as 4 AM and breakfast pastries and doughnuts around 6 AM. They restock shelves and produce throughout the nite and theyre always friendly about rainchecks if out of stock.

I just went for western union and there was no problem and almost efficientThe guy was foreign and seemed lime he didnt know what he was doingMore I think about it . I had a problem with there western union before and some stupid rule were only one person was allowed to do the western union. But that person was on lunch. Ya know I think Im gonna have to take some stars away. Another time the wouldnt take my EBT card so I go call and o still had 193.00 but the wouldnt take my card.Turned out that there deli never changed the scanner from it was hot chicken but when I brought it itu was cold outta the fridge but these stupid people never switched there tags from hot to cold. I suppose if you have money and are privileged youll get treated good ( I honestly dont know. ) But I do know if your poor its gimme your money and get the hell out now!! In fact keep your money poor man just get out .!!!! In there defense Safeway does give food to the homeless shelters across California. But the sure dont wanna see them.
