This review is specifically for the sandwich counter at the deli. Whoever the manager is for that section is on July 5th at 9:00 AM extremely rude and walked off for over 15 minutes after my friend ordered and I never got to order my sandwich.The rest of this Safeway has generally been pleasant to go to.

The 5th Street Safeway in Alameda would be four stars with their selection, but I take away two stars with how unsafe it feels.The alarms go off every 10 minutes every time I come in, and theres rampant theft and people leaving with shopping carts full of stuff. Almost all liquor, detergent, and batteries are locked up as well.Theres also people cooking danger dogs right out from (the kind you see outside of Giants games!) - thats just beyond the pale.Security needs to step up. The 5th Street Safeway in Alameda needs a serious change, or it will end up abandoned like so many other businesses around the Bay Area.Dont know if corporate will read this, but please fix things.

Friendly clean shopping in West Alameda. This Safeway has been our principal groceries place since we moved here in 2018. Noticeable: cashiers are generally very friendly and helpful.

Not even 8pm and Im trying to get something for dinner after work. The deli counter had full lights on and everything is still out on display. Waited for like 20 minutes for a worker to tell me that its closed. Absolutely no indication anywhere that its closed or the operating hours. Nothing on the employee for doing their job closing up the counter but could the company actually do better to not have the customer experience be so frustrating. Safeway is honestly one of my least favorite places to shop but sometimes its the only option. For the exorbitant prices they charge for everything they should be able to do better...

Only real downside of the store is that one of the doors in is pretty much permenantly not open & the deli section doesnt have as many options as other safeways, generally otherwise is fine

Asian kid with glasses at the deli was making sushi rolls for about 10 min while I was waiting for someone to attend me I finally decided to just ask if there is a designated person that works the deli section and I walked over to him and said hey about 10 times to him until someone else from the deli came and told me someone will be with me. I look at the Asian kid and I said “ thanks for ignoring me “ he looked at me dead in my eyes smiled and gave a thumbs up.

This place was always annoying to shop at - there are never enough cashiers or open lanes - but I wanted the points for a discount on gas so I kept coming here anyway. Now it feels like they raise their prices every week and any time theres a deal on something its always sold out which is frustrating. They permanently closed one of the entrances, which is annoying considering the parking lot is large but you can only enter on one side now. None of those things were dealbreakers. After today though, Im done coming here.Theyve put ALL of their hard liquor, except for a couple of cheap bottles of vodka, behind locked doors. Its hard enough to find an employee anywhere, but now you have to push a button and wait for someone to come over. I did that and no one ever came and after waiting 5 minutes I just grabbed one of the 2 cheap bottles that wasnt locked up and got in line. Where I waited for 15 minutes while being the second person in line the entire time. The store wasnt busy, but again, there were only two checkouts open other than self-checkout, which you cant use if youre buying alcohol. The line I was in wasnt moving and then when I got to the front, the cashier told me he was off and another person had to come over and sign in, and the whole time they were telling other people that the lane was closed and were telling people with alcohol to go to self checkout(?) because there was only one other lane open. All in all I spent about 5 minutes grabbing the 3 items I came to get and then 20 minutes waiting, both for a person to come unlock the alcohol (who never came) and then in a checkout line as the 2nd person in line. I wasnt able to get the products I actually came for because they were locked up and there was no one to help me. If theyre fine making grocery shopping a hostile and time-wasting experience for their paying customers, Im fine shopping elsewhere.

Never go to this Safeway Starbucks!!!! They are lazy!!! They don’t open when the actual store opens and they rudely make you wait forever for them to decide when they are ready to open and make your drink. I’ve been standing here waiting forever. They apparently dont want customers, so why not just close the store?Im so tired of moldy produce. Time to ship elsewhere.Poorly managed. They make it so hard to enter and exit. They often dont have any shopping carts even when the store is empty. So you can only buy what you can carry in a hand basket. And now the Amazon locker is so hard to get to because of the new metal barriers that it is easier to order to another location and just not shop at Safeway.

I was going to be next and some staff person rudely came to the side of the counter and turned the service light off. Did nto even bother to tell the people who falling inline that this counter was closed. Best shopping place for groceries and produce. Its open 24/7. I like their seafood and tropical fruit collection. Best place to get organic items. Great customer service. It does have carpet cleaning machines and related products. Huge parking lot. Closer to banks, restaurants and gyms.

Across from Tam High my Grandmother was in the third graduating class. She made a great cabinet in woodshop. Different times. This place is amazing. Great employees who deal with Marin customer base of all ages that act like they have never been in a supermarket or even out in public ever before. Great customer service and presentation 😃

What is up with Safeways ridiculously tedious sale pricing. After my visit here on 24 Apr 23, Ill never step foot in another Safeway! I pull up the ad on Safeways website, I see several things that would be nice for my meals for the next week. The website allowed me to click a button on the website instead of clipping coupons from a paper copy of the ad, which Id not have.I get in the store, start adding my choices to the cart. As I finish in the produce department and grab 1/2 & 1/2, milk and some yogurt, I arrive at the meat counter. There are lots of people trying to decide on dinner, so I pull my cart off to the side, and try to find the chicken bits I wanted. Three minutes later, someone has made off with my cart. So I get to start all over, and even need to go outside and even grab another cart. As I re-fill my cart, I finalize my shopping, head to the checkout aisle, as Im waiting I realise my shopping bags were taken. Now I get to pay for bags too! The total when I am paying for my goods, it is considerably more expensive than I had calculated. Much more expensive. Hell, my 18 pack of Coke Zero is $4 more than the advertised price.When I got outside, I looked at the receipt, comparing it to the ad I picked up in the store. Noticing that nothing on the receipt matches the ad, so I go back inside. I ask the woman overseeing the self-checkout. She points to booth at the far end of the store. Closed until further notice. I head back to the checkstands looking for someone to help me. No one other than the woman that checked me out. As she is finishing up with her only customer, I explain what is going on, and ask her to page a manager.The manager comes over, he tells me that if I dont use the Safeway app, clicking the coupons on the website does nothing, even though I had to provide my club card information. Silly me, I assumed that this information would be matched up to my account when I keyed my phone number at the checkstand. NOPE!!! That would just be too logical. I had to pull everything that was on sale out of my bags, it had to be returned, and when the manager got the point where those items would need to be re-rung, I chose not to take them.It seems that pricing is just a big game to the management at Safeway! I guess the goal is to lure customers into the store with great deals, and then make it so difficult actually get those deals, that youll not notice that you are being ripped off by a huge corporation! Whole Foods has better prices than Safeway does, Whole Foods doesnt make one jump through hoops to get the sale prices, and Whole Foods food quality is a thousand percent better!I may present this to the Alameda County DAs office!

Giving one star, so wish I can give no stars. I go to this Safeway all the time to complete deliveries and to also shop for myself. Today, I went to do a doordash order and was followed by employees like I wasn’t going to notice, but I was followed by employees because they assumed I was stealing. This store needs to do better when it comes to the workers because it’s not ok to make a customer feel uncomfortable. Maybe, management can give their employees training on not stereotyping their customers based off their skin color and assuming their stealing. I would like to feel comfortable when I am shopping and not to worry about being watched. So, I will not be shopping at this Safeway anymore for myself but to only do deliveries. If this continues, I will be filing a complaint.

This place used to have the best people, who went above and beyond, cared for the customers. Now this place has turned into a place I am even scared to go in because I know my expectations will be disappointment. Denise-what is up with that, you are the manager instead of hating on people who are better do better. I have been wanting to say this for long time-Safeway’s future is the next Babies are us. Barely any carts, only 1 door is used for entering (probably violating some building codes.) Employees just stand around doing nothing. Inefficient line management. For some strange reason, some employees think theyre working in Oakland even though a giant sign inside says serving Alameda since xxxx. Why is produce and shelves being stocked during busy hrs? Back in my day, all that stocking was done at night and before 10am. Terrible Safeway.

Wearing baggy patterned light sweat pants, a baggy shirt that reads Im here for the Boos, with a ghost on it. She does not appear to be wearing upper undergarments, but is wearing a yellow wind breaker with the Central Perk logo from the hit show F.R.I.E.N.D.S. on its back.**(Flashback/Background vital to the events that transpired in the Safety that ruinous day)***She enters with the punny intent to purchase two bottles of liquor, in order to continue her enjoyable poolside Saturday with her new roommate, having just moved to California from the Midwest, this was the first relaxing weekend day she had since her arrival March 7th. The date of this visit is May 13th.Upon the roommates understanding they had yet to have any booze in their home, while enjoying a pool day. They hauled festivities to remedy this celebratory indesrcretion.****Conclude flashback*****39F notices the aisle with the elixir, to rectify the unintended party faux pas, as she enters through an exit passing through an unopen register lane and making a right (the entrance doors are barricaded for some reasons.With one thing on her mind, she makes her way towards the aisle, taking in the sights of a new grocer experience in her new hometown of Alameda. Its beautiful. Memories of her unforgettable experiences at Publix on the east coast, the decade plus she lived in Florida Pub Subs became a staple in her life. Having not had them in nearly 3 years you can imagine her awe and splendor at seeing Boars Head signature sub rolls prepared here sign straight ahead of her trajectory.Foregoing all semblance of her current situation, she walks gleefully up to the sandwich counter where a customer was currently being assisted with humor and kindness by a delightful appearing androgynous associate, Rory (early 20s?) Asian/Pacific islander, dark hair and glasses with a Safeway hat and facemask.They were witty and productive, while also appearing under some work related strain with colleagues, but maintained professionalism to the best of their ability with the current customer.After waiting around 2-4 minutes 39F notices multiple employees behind the deli with Rory not helping anyone in particular. One being a short darker woman with clear physical impairments and limitations. She is leaning on a counter deep in a conversation/texting on her phone ignoring everyone behind her, as her back is to the deli counter. Her name is Jessica.Rory, realizing they will still be requiring a few more minutes with their current customers, politely calls over requesting Jessicas assistance to help the 39F.Jessica acknowledges Rorys request to aid customers with a mere eye roll. Finishing up her task on her phone in front of everyone. Then, finally proceeds to saunter over to the best of her physical abilities.The 39F realizing this, relaxed in a patient manner for assistance to arrive. Upon arriving Jessica stands in front of 39F and says What do you want?39F: looking at menu, May I please have a large everything roll.Jessica: we dont have that.39f: confused as the sign says this and the two baskets behind Jessica, indeed look to be filled with everything rolls. Oh! My mistake. Ill do a large multi grain roll then please.Jessica: we dont got multigrain rolls only bread.

Last night I purchased a Spinach and Dijon salad feom this Safeway. It was a day before expirationan. I didnt check the expiration date. I ate it and I had diarrhea and vomiting at night. It is NOT ok to leave items on shelf so close to expiration!!! Eventhough it was 1 day before expiration it made me sick!

Well stocked full service grocery store, part of national chain. Friendly helpful personnel. Convenient location. Bakery, deli, hot prepared foods, coffee shop, wine/alcoholic beverages, butcher. Very good produce section with organics & locally sourced vegetables & fruit. Lots of vegan options. Large well lit free parking lot. Gas station nearby. Shopper loyalty program. This Safeway is simply massive! I like that there is always a huge variety of items in every category. The produce section, in particular, has some great items.Safeway, as a chain, can be a little pricey, but it is really one of the cheapest grocery store options in Alameda, as we dont have the benefit of a nice local grocery store like Berkeley Bowl.Seriously, you cannot go wrong with anything in this store, and the selection and sheer size are huge positives.

Been shopping here for a year have spent at least 4k at this store Last night 8/26 me and my son in law made a purchase of 120 dollars. There was an Asian looking manager that I have never seen.I bought flowers 💐 for my wife who has stage 2 CANCER earlier that day that were very dry and stale so because it was no one at customer service and 1 person at checkout I put the ones I purchased earlier and grab the exact same ones that looked fresher.After purchasing 120 worth of foodThe sales associate that check me out calls the manager over and accused me of stealing flowers, Then they took the flowers I purchased earlier and the new ones I wanted to exchanged them continued to kick me and my step son of my Wife with Cancer currently in the hospital.They forced us out there after I tried to plead for at least my older flowers back,Threat was to call police on me, so I called them myself and decided to just move forward with Coorporate headquartersI am a African American male in my 20s and walked out that store in tears thinking about my wife with Cancer her son was Alamo very disappointed

I usually shop for groceries at another supermarket in town. However, I did not feel like going across town to the other store. This Safeway is located in Alameda Landing and close to my home.The only reason I came here was to purchase several items to earn bonus points on another website.There is ample parking and this store also has a Starbucks. They have a large selection of fresh produce, meats, poultry and prepared foods, soups and salads. The only item I had a hard time finding was Kraft Tartar Sauce. I was in the mayonnaise, salad dressing, pickles aisle. They also have a variety of BBQ sauces in this aisle. Nada, zilch. I couldnt find any employee to help me. After walking around, I finally found a jar of tartar sauce (not my brand) across from the cold cuts section. It was the last jar, and as the saying goes, beggars cant be choosey.

WHAT ARE YOUR STORE HOURS SAFEWAY?!!! EVERY time i go to a Safeway the hours are different and theyre closed. No matter which store location I go to. No matter what time it is. This store location claims online that its open til 1am. NOPE! Closed! Someone has blacked out the sign where it said 1am with a Sharpie and wrote 12am on it. Cmon Safeway pick a time and stick with it.I just left South shore which is supposed to be open til 2 except they were already closed at 12am and this time there wasnt a sign with a reason why they closed early. 🙄Im driving all over town chasing Safeways that close early whenever they feel like it.

If I didnt live right next door I dont know if I would shop here at all. Ive wasted a lot of money on already opened products and expired goods and moldy bread. The staff is very friendly. They could use more baggers. Parking is not too bad. I have gone so far as to order from Hello Fresh for dinners now to avoid wasting money and time. Now I just buy breakfast and a few snacks here. Also the prices are way too high here. They should and could be lower. I am not cheap and dont mind spending good money, it just seems like the prices are too high for what you get. And no, all stores do not charge as much.Havent been here in a while. Prices are worse than ever but at this point thats a problem almost everywhere now.

Great place to stop off when you are filling up at the gas tank at the same time.Killing 2 birds with one stone.This Safeway is much bigger and masks and social distancing (self discipline) are required during the pandemic/lockdown.Folks are generally more friendly and relaxed.Its another world unless you work there, Im sure.

This location is extremely conveniently located away from my apartment. The staff is friendly, the vibe is relaxing, and the selection of goods is plentiful. The deli provides for nights when you are just too tired after a long shift to cook and there are easy to prepare, ready made options from a large group of different cultures.

$0.40¢ off a gallon of gas!! The regular price of the gas without the discount us competitive so with Safeway rewards its a GREAT DEAL!! I will be back. You cant get more than. 20¢ a gallon discount from the Chevron stations that offer the Safeway program so if you have a larger discount available this is the place to use it.

A couple of the cashiers there are just plain rude. On more than one occasion I have had to bag my own stuff. One of them actually stepped back, rolled her eyes and crossed her arms when I mentioned something about it. So now I just go to The Ridge Safeway in Oakland. Its newer, nicer, bigger and the workers are super friendly.

Hey shoppers, this is it. Quite possibly the most well run Safeway I have ever seen. Ps. I worked for Safeway for 28+ years. Their shelves are well stocked, the meat dept .has a great selection. Produce is incredible but that is not a great thing though. . Heres what I mean. I walked by the jumbo yellow onions, and theyre perfect but Remember onions dont grow like that, they typically are large and small fat and thin so, The perfect onions are probably GMO. I PERSONALLY DONT LIKE THAT. SO BE CAREFUL. PRODUCE IS NOT TYPICALLY IDENTICAL TO OTHER PRODUCE. OverviewThis Safeway is great. Good selection fast lines, make sure you shop for specials .

I shop here a lot and general get good service from the cashiers and produce department. The service in the meat department is questionable. They always run out of sale items (meat) then wont put together packs of meat for waiting customers with 3 butchers standing behind the counter!

The store is nice and clean and the employees are friendly. However, everytime I come here, no matter the time of day, there are huge lines. They only have 3 lanes open. They need more lanes open. I wait at least 15 minutes. Usually more. They do not have enough baggers either. I do not mind bagging my own groceries, but it does help speed up the process when a bagger is there.

They have more stuff than the one local to me. Ive seen that they have frozen marrow bones in the meat case. How cool is that?The beer selection is good, I dont know about the wines, but a full aisle should help you pair with nearly any dish you could think of.The bakery is big with lots of fresh choices, attached to the nearby deli, which has a surprising amount of variety. You can tell the neighborhood has a lot of different cultures from the amount of options in the deli case.While the lines can be long, the service is good and your shopping can be finished in one stop.

It’s a Safeway where you might need to check items. Bought a cake off the fridge and it looked fine, but then I saw mold on the fruit. Could’ve been avoided if I checked, but I think it should be the responsibility of the department manager to come in and verify their products are up to sellable standards. I could make a return, but I really don’t want to haggle in customer service and bring the gross moldy cake back and make a scene out of a bad situation. Check the products and if they’re moldy they need come off the sales floor.

Today at around 2pm there were only 2 checkers and a line that went the length of an aisle! I saw people abandon their cart when they saw that the self-checking was closed as well. At the best of times the checkout is the worst part of the shopping experience there but this was absurd. The baggers have had no training and seem incapable of using common sense (like not putting canned food on top of tomatoes et.al.).

This is my favorite Safeway to go to, not because it has things others dont, its the location. Theres a few restaurants nearby so you can grab some food or boba. The Safeway itself if newly built so its nice and clean, plenty of parking in the lot and havent had any issues when shopping here. Only complaint is with Safeway in general, its more expensive than other grocery stores.

Of all the Safeways Ive been in, this one is the worst. Prices are much higher here than in other locations. Additionally, this location is severely understaffed. The self checkout is supposed to help with the long lines, but half of the machines are broken and those that work are very slow to process.This Safeways only saving grace is the location, as there are few large well-stocked grocery stores in the area.

Easily the slowest Safeway I have been to in the bay area and I wish I could say it was a one time thing. I live near here and every time I swing in for a last minute item the trip takes me 30+ minutes (20 or so spent waiting in the line). Ive gone at peak hours and off hours and nothing ever changes. Fewer customers just means fewer cashiers. Management needs to pay the cashiers more to motivate them or look at efficiency processes because Im just about tempted to drive to South Shore when I need groceries.*12 month edit: Someone must have taken my original review seriously because they have seriously upped their service. Can still be slow at times but not as painful as it used to be, more what I would expect from a grocery store. Have made a few quick stop ins over the past few months and had good success getting out in 15 minutes. Do not go. I will never go again. Today I went to just get some extra chicken for dinner at the deli really quick around 5:45. After an hour of trying to pay for the chicken I got from deli, I walked out without being able to actually buy it. The deli counter couldnt check me out because the employees there were not trained on the register and couldnt figure out how to clear a transaction on the register that was left on there previously. The poor lady working there struggled for 15 minutes trying to find the right button and then gave up and told me I would need to use the regular line.I took my chicken and walked over the lines but realized they only had two open lanes and two cashiers going for the entire store. The line stretch nearly all the way the produce section. Lots of livid patrons annoyed by the line. The self-checkout line wasnt any better and was wrapped around and double backing to the liquor.After going back and forth trying to find a line just to buy my chicken quickly, I tried to go to the customer service to see if they could help. They had 2 customers in line at the customer service counter, trying to troubleshoot Western Union transfers they did earlier. After waiting 30 minutes to deal with those customers, I tried to jump in and ask the one person working there if they had anyone else that could help or if could call more cashiers. That is when the customer who was dealing with Western Issues snapped at me and started going off about everyone having first world problems. The lady at the customer service counter did nothing and then finally responded that she would help me in a minute. It already had been 30 there and 1 hour in the store. My chicken was cold. I gave it 5 more minutes but I didnt feel comfortable standing next to the unstable woman that snapped at me. I asked the lady if they had a manager on duty and she acted as if I wasnt there so I through the chicken on the counter and walked out.I will never go back to that store until they fire whoever is in charge there and re-train everyone. Complete joke. Their pharamcy is also trash and never has any of meds in stock.

This is a recent addition to the Island city and is a Safeway flagship store. This location is huge. I tend to not shop grocery store with out knowing the layout because it takes me too long to shop. These people have the WORST Safeway Ive ever been to, hands down. They have signs hung all along the exterior of the store, claiming to have extremely short to non-existent wait times. Caveat Emptor!!! If you take the time to read them (believe me, you will have it, in spades), you will understand why you have been waiting a solid 30 minutes in a checkout lane.They have solved their problems with the unacceptably slow service, with a promise to open another lane if there are three or more customers waiting in one. This would be a great idea... if there was even one checkout lane lit up with an actual checker present. I stood there the other night, frozen dinners and ice cream melting, and one customer behind me, for that amazing half-hour, and the most unbelievable thing occurred, twice. Someone walked by, and said, Have you been helped? When I said, No, they walked away without a word!The guy behind me was less than thrilled about this as well, and we still went totally ignored, even after I resorted to throwing my hands in the air, waving them, and asked, Does this mean its free?Eventually someone came - slowly - and offered no apology. Then I was given even more time to process, after he rung me up, then suddenly disappeared without handing me a receipt or even loosely bagging my stuff. I had everything bagged and was again standing there with my stuff melting, when he came back to inform me that they were out of Monopoly cards. This may sound ridiculous, but his next statement was truly the kicker: If you come back in the morning, I will give you the two I owe you. The time was ~03:00. Thats morning, as far as I know. My receipt, interestingly enough, said 02.40. Imagine my surprise, when I went back at 01.50 the next morning, and couldnt buy alcohol, because a stocker told me it was 02.03.My best guess is that they knew it would BE 02.03 by the time I had grabbed my items and actually gotten someone to allow me to pay for them. Seems optimistic, actually. I walked right back out of the store without buying anything, this time, and it horrifies me to think about what time it will be on their planet, should I need to return to that store.Truly the worst Safeway I have ever, ever, been stuck with. I will happily be going way out of my way to patronize other stores for anything I need in the future.

Worst grocery store experience I’ve ever had. Exceedingly lazy employees especially at self checkout. One poor woman had the only “old fashioned” checkout line and she was swamped because the rest of the lazy stand-around employees refused to help at the self checkout.I was in this store an hour trying to get a coffee at the Starbucks and about 4 other items. Reasonably good Safeway, with pricing consistent with others in the area. But the one on the other side of Alameda, at South Shore Center, has more variety and is open 24/7; I find 95% of what I want at that one, but about 80% at this one. The main draw for this one is that its near Target, Michaels, and various other places, so you can go to several in one trip. Well, same goes for the other one, but its near Trader Joes, OfficeMax, and PetSmart. Both Alameda Safeways are easily accessible via transit (just keep an eye on the night schedule so you dont miss the last bus out, if youre a late shopper). Parking at both locations is plentiful. The Starbucks café in this one is better, with a more convenient outlet, some comfy chairs, and less foot traffic. Deli service is about the same.

I found this store to be extremely crowded. The aisles are closely placed together and then they place things in the aisle that make you have to angle your cart around.
