The store is OK. I am glad it exists! Employees are friendly and trying their best. However, I stopped going because of the people that hang out in front of the store and parking lot. Be prepared for aggressive panhandling and/or just straight up harassment as you are trying to enter/exit the store or go to your car.

Do you like paying premium prices for non-premium items and being heckled by panhandlers every time you come to the store? Then this is the Safeway for you.To their credit, the employees are kind, the store is clean, and the location is great. However, I don’t see how the higher prices are justified and the consistent presence of aggressive individuals demanding money outside the front door is incredibly off-putting. I would not recommend coming here at night - it does not feel safe.

Once again, the customer service at this Safeway proved to be an utter disaster. They never disappoint.Meet Mr. Trapper Hat, our standout cashier of the night. Its 11:45pm, hes proudly adorned with a trapper hat and dark shades, apparently believing that the fluorescent lighting was too bright for him.Hes engrossed in conversation with another employee while listening to music, allergic to anything relevant to what hes paid to do. I start unloading my items unto the belt when I notice the self-checkout was open. But its too late, Mr. Trapper Hat has abruptly halted his conversation and redirected his attention towards me, clearly irritated. I say hello but his barley audible grunt is drowned out by the music broadcasting from his cellphone.He stands there for a moment, silently scowling before scanning my stuff. His body language is loud and clear, though. Its giving me Jules (Pulp Fiction) energy. I double dare YOU! Say hello one more G*damn time!!! I decided to say less.Moral of this story. If yourre needing to pickup a few things AND are overdue the anxiety of feeling punked (in worst a way), swing by this Safeway just before closing. Be sure to say hello to Mr. Trapper Hat.Or better yet, spare yourself the trouble and steer clear of this particular location altogether. Otherwise, you may walk (run) away feeling the Dont take care, hope to see you never hospitality.

This is my favorite Safeway in the E Bay, even tho its tiny! The staff here is always so friendly and nice and I just love coming here. A big shout-out to Mo, who works behind the deli counter. She is so great, awesome customer service and again so friendly. Its a breath of fresh air shopping here. And I literally will just make a trip here to get some hot chicken and say hi to Mo 🌞🤙

This is a tiny store in a busy area - a regular sized cart is a tight fit. If you plan pick up lunch at the deli, do yourself a favor and arrive before 11:45am

This is the smallest Safeway Ive ever been to. The layout is unintuitive. The customers are always bumping into each other and confused about where to line up for checkout. I only come here when I cant find something at a different grocery store.

Safeway had more than inside foods; Brother Julio has an amazing Honey, right outside, thats worth every penny. The organic properties are very important and this is the purest honey, that Ive had in a long time. Hats off to you, Julio for being here. Thank you!

I have lived in this neighborhood for 20+ years, while we are glad to have a convenient store albeit small in scale, the service at the front desk is dismal and some of cashiers are absolutely appalling. The good ones have all disappeared. One older relatively new cashier has such a bad attitude even my friend commented that she was very sweet to her while very rude to me. The cashier actually accused me of having an attitude instead of looking at herself in the mirror. She assumed, being non-white and speaking with an accent, I must be extremely stupid and inept. She stated so in her under the breath mumbling and throwing grocery around with disdain accusing me of all sorts of stuff. That kind of attitude is inexcusable. The butcher shop at this store is still excellent, but the customer service desk and some cashiers should be jail guards instead of Safeway cashiers.Update : While the Asian male manager is very capable and friendly, I noticed the employees are increasingly behaving similar to those at 5100 Broadway bigger store. A new male cashier made a mistake entering a code and charged extra on an item. When I noticed, he insinuated that I had put the discount label on the package to get the discount. The supervisor corrected his mistake. He was rude and super unfriendly throughout, did not apologize for his mistake nor his ridiculous accusation. Labor shortage aside, where did Safeway get all those super rude and unqualified people? They dont do anything to the store bandits, yet they treat legitimate customers like we are the thieves and $0 shoppers.

Personal problem: my number only works sometime and I go for the sales so this is a big deal when it causes me to have to remove items or even loose rewards points.Update:Deleted my account, and after two months they erased all my info at my request. Tried again with same number and it was same result.Made a new account with another phone and havent had any problems since. So Ill add an additional star for the 1,400$ I saved this year by using the app.

I dont generally review grocery stores but the lady who worked at the deli left such a positive impression on me. The women who helped us at the deli section was so nice. She mentioned she was new but I wouldnt have guessed. She was able to recommend something I could eat cause the person in line before me snatched the rest of the side I wanted. No worries tho! I was happy with her recommendation!

Employees are doing their absolute best.Ownership/management needs to do a better job of preparing their store for *average* levels of store traffick.Curbside pickup is a joke since the employees arent notified when you tell the app, the phone number takes you to a voice-mail box that hasnt been set up yet, and theres no one to answer any of the phone lines inside meaning disabled elderly and otherwise unable to go inside folks are left sitting in their car with no one even knowing theyre there unless they go inside.If the store makes a mistake and doesnt give you several bags of your food theyll call a full 2 days later asking if you still want the already refunded food.Its really not acceptable to have such a skeleton crew working that they cant even keep up with minimal services.I hope theyre at LEAST being paid their worth.

Wider selection than the store that is closest to me. The security here though have been a little interesting. One time I saw staff smoking with guests or friends right outside the exits, which was interesting. But if the store thought that was fine I didn’t see a reason to protest it. Cashiers tend to be faster than some of the other stores I’ve been to, although at times the lines can get a little lengthy especially during weekend rushes. Overall it’s a nicely stocked store with lots of savings if you get the app. Not sure if they are phasing out the drive up and go service though, as the last time I went had the wait quite a long time to get my order. To the point I just went downstairs as nobody would answer my calls to the number provided and even then had to wait extra long for an order placed early in the day for later evening pickup.

I just dont like the demeanor of the black security guard who is older who stands there at the front door with his arms folded as if hes ready to arrest you, I dont like how he looked at me when I came into the store as if I was a criminal. I feel unwelcomed at this Safeway. I dont like how they have a security gate to enter into before you go shopping. It really takes away the fun out of shopping. I do not like this store. It appears to be too hostile for a family to go shopping.

Good small store that caters to mostly the people working and living around the neighborhood with some coming from the Lake Merrit area who are out for walks or exercise. There is no bakery but every other department is good and has mostly what you need except for things that they cant get from the manufacturer or warehouse due to shortages. One thing to make sure of when visiting this location is that you must make sure to hide any thing inside your car that is in plain view. Even an empty plastic bag will entice someone to break your window. So make sure to hide everything. Also, be aware of your surroundings. There were quite a few robberies in the parking lot.Still a nice site to go to if you are in the neighborhood. There are now barriers in the front of the door to prevent theft. Its too bad that criminals have made it more inconvenient to do.

Alot of everything, not the best quality goods. Sale items can be good. I am a bit fussy, we have two Berkeley bowl grocery stores and wow, the lines at those stores can be long. I pay close attention to how stores respond to exaggerated shopping while maintaining effective sales. On a packed day this store has responded surprisingly good. Once you see Management get behind a cash register to help ease the load... you know you have a store that cares. And thats the store Im shopping every time.

Try another branch. This one is always low on stock and youre competing with personal shoppers who are running around with carts and grabbing everything off the shelf. half the things you want are always gone. And the lines at the food counters are so slow, 5 minutes to make one sandwich and all you want is half pound of salad

Though a busy location, this Safeway has helpful, friendly staff, the store and carts are continuously being sanitized, and the staff continuously stocks the shelves. The people who work here are the worst. Bought some alcohol and while at the register the cashier asks in a loud voice for my birthday. Then has something smart to say when I give a surprised look. So much for privacy. Whenever I shop here I seem to leave upset. Im done with them. Its pretty remarkable how consistently bad the employees are here.

This Safeway location isn’t very good. It’s small, claustrophobic, and has a poor layout that lets lines get very long very quickly. The selection here is really weak compared to other Safeway’s, and they run out of things quickly as well. The staff here are nice, and the location is convenient, but overall, this one leaves a lot to be desired.

An easily accessible food market in the Grand Lake area. The produce quality and selection are adequate, and the non-perishables are standard. They have a better coffee selection than Whole Foods, but smaller beer selection. Do not buy meat here unless you are a member, their prices are outrageous.

Let me say first that Im not sure if she is the assistant manager or manager, but she is very professional and competent (maybe her name is Chanda or something like that). She has my sympathies though, because everyone else Ive interacted with at that store is terrible. Customer service hits an all time low at that store. I can only imagine what its like working with the rest of them.

Im not a huge fan of Safeways and this one is among the worst. It is egregiously understaffed, those who are working dont seem to care a bit, the parking lot is a nightmare and an invitation for a smash and grab. Except for the quick pick-up, dont get why anyone would shop here over either of the Berkeley Bowl locations which have superior everything, at much better prices.

Very small, old store; lack of adequate shelf space seriously limits choice and quantities. Not even a spot to pull out of the way to consider a shopping list or Safeway Mobil app. Think of it as a really fantastic 7-11 for convenience to its Oakland/ almost Piedmont location. Staff mostly doubles down to provide decent service in lieu of reduced air, space and selection.

The coloured older cashier has humiliated and harrassed me today as I had gone to his line of que and as I work for insta cart I needed to seperate the orders and he snatched the insulation from my hand and laughed at me and left the counter. Whats the reason?why he acted this way - what did I do wrongWhere’s the customer service.He has made me so stressed as I could not grasp what just has happened. I know his face as I go there daily as I do the insta cart.His very racist as he acts polite and kind to the Americans that his serving but with the other nations such as me - an Asian. I was just profiled at this store. Myself and my co worker were clearly waiting behind the sandwich counter when an older woman employee saw us in line and immediately looked towards the woman who looked like her and began to serve her, even after I voiced that we had been waiting for a while. Instead of calmly recognizing her mistake or even asking if she could help the other white woman first, she instead decided to raise her voice at us. We decided to leave instead.

Convenient in regards to my location, but only preferable in comparison to the co-op-ish place a similar distance away. This place is as expensive as any other Safeway. Coupons are a necessity. This particular one has a few unfriendly staff, but it is pretty understandable, given the retail/food service industries. The lines can be long, even at times that are not rush-hour. Go in the early morning or late evening to save yourself trouble.

What great service!! We needed to order deli trays for people to come to the house after a local funeral. I live out of the area - I called and Steve the manager and Buffy in Deli were terrific. Took my order ( and a credit card though they dont usually do that) and I was set. Got there yesterday (8-26) day of the funeral - stopped to pick up - - all trays were ready - - And they were gorgeous:). Always use my local Safeway for party trays - but these were really outstanding!! Thanks to you it made our memorial gathering very special.

Ive lived in this neighborhood for almost 20 years and this Safeway has overcharged me more than any other store, and has often had misleading price signs, more than any other store Ive observed.Make sure the cashier discounts the price if you buy items from the 50% discount section. A manager told me the discounts are not programmed into the cash register, and the cashier might not see the red 50% stickers.Update: today I bought reduced price bananas, but the price wasnt programmed into the cash register, and the cashier argued that there were only two prices: organic and inorganic, but no reduced price. I asked is everything programmed into the cash register? but no answer. I said Im letting you know because if it goes by, and then you see its wrong, youll have to refund them and give them to me for free, per the big sign hanging above the check out area (the policy was imposed by the county Bureau of Weights and Measures because Safeway is such a repeat offender). So I went over and took a picture and brought it back. It shouldnt be this much hassle.Then there were avocados with a sign that said, among other things, buy 1 get 1 FREE and $1.25 per each. The avocados were a bit soft so I thought theyre probably trying to sell them before they rot. In this area, avocados are priced about $1 each. On the sign it says non-member price of $2.50 each, but I have the store card. My take away from this was it will be $1.25 for two, since they are buy 1 get 1 free. They charged me $2.50 for each of these. Deliberately misleading sign. I returned them for a refund.I emailed the Alameda county board of weights and measures, and the next day or so I got an email back saying they visited the store and found a violation.

Three stars for a daytime visit. If you come after dark this place can be a little bit scary. There is a vagrant perched outside the door harassing all the customers as they come out, but this one was relatively unaggressive. Inside the store the situation is relatively benign.

Pros: convenient location. hot chicken and deli are tasty. decent pre-packaged soups, sandwiches, and chicken. shelves are always stocked. robust liquor section.Cons: deli counter is regularly a ghost town. long lines and slow service. be prepared to be hit up outside for cash more than once. in/out of the parking lot can be stressful at rush hour.

While the late hours and extensive liquor section is great it was really the typical American grocery store experience to find good food (fresh uncut non organic strawberries) it literally took 10 minutes of wading around mountains of junk food promotions to get to the good stuff! For such a large store I don’t understand why it makes sense to put the bad food out front and hide stuff that’s good. But it’s not Safeway’s fault, I had the same difficulty finding Healthy well priced food in Florida. I wish I didn’t have to swim through mountains of chips and soda to get to stuff I can actually eat though.

This is by far the worst Safeway Ive ever established. Stock and supplies are limited with slim pickings. This store is consistently understaffed with long lines and slow to help customer service. The Safeway corporation needs to either shut it down or better yet invest into adequate staffing, space expansion, and a better supply of products.

Went shopping around 01135hrs, I see most customers complain about parking, but my main concerns are the workers!!!! Spent over 280 dollars and the cashier automatically said your club card is already typed inn???? When I didnt even touch the key pad yet!!!! BE VERY WARY ABOUT WORKERS AT THIS SAFEWAY LOCATION!!!!!!!! THEY WILL ENTER THERE OWN CLUB CARDS SO THEY CAN GET THE POINTS ECT....... THANK GOD I DONT OWN ANY STOCKS IN SAFEWAY!!!!!! Super convenient for me. There’s always a bit of a wait. But that’s true of nearly all big chains. It doesn’t deserve a 5 ‘cause it’s a smaller store & doesn’t always have things that are advertised. Prices for some things aren’t nearly as competitive as other places. I always look forward to their weekly circular & $5 Fridays. And I’ve become familiar by name w/ some of the staff. Best time to go is very early when they open. Less people!

Yessss!! You know a steak must be good when it turned me from vegan to a carnivore, lol! This is like my 14th steak from this Safeway within the past 2 weeks and I can honestly say it never gets old! The ribeyes are tender, juicy and flavorful, and I feel like royalty when I cook them stovetop with my famous homemade garlic butter😁 If you are wondering what cut suits you, or even if you need a certain price point cut of steak, talk to Cliff whom is an expert when it comes to a great flavorful cut of steak! Cliff always stirs me in the right direction and is above and beyond! Everytime I talk with someone in this Meat Department they are more than happy to share their levels of expertise(and they have alot of expertise). What I love most is the knowledge levels, genuine concern for what I am looking for, honesty, and how much pride they take in their work. Some places try to sell anything, but this Safeway Meat Department genuinely wants you to be happy and goes above and beyond, and I can really appreciate that😁

This is my local Safeway. I always come here and I love it because it’s convenient. However, the lines are always long and I’m disappointed that this location allowed a customer service agent yell at me after throwing my groceries in my bag. I told the manager and she did nothing about it. I came back hours later and he was still ringing up customers. That is unacceptable. I hope this location starts to value their customers more.

Not a good place to shop nor work there. Some of the meat they have be old same with items in the deli. The manager walks around with an attitude and rude to the employees. Long lines due to the staff not getting enough training. Food thats bought and leaves out the store 9/10 itll come back to the store within that week or less. The store parking lot, cars get broken into and Safeway has cameras but wont help the customers identify the suspects. A lot of the Safeway meat gets tossed into the trash.

I love Safeway! I always find everything I need. Today I asked the Butcher a question, and he came out from behind the counter, and found what I asked for. I especially LOVE Grand Ave Safeway, because it feels so intimate. Ive shopped there for many years, and Im very comfortable there, and The Just for You is INCREDIBLE!

Avoid this Safeway if you can. It is poorly organized and the checkers are agonizingly slow. Ive made the mistake of popping in because I thought it would be convenient only to find myself cursing as I wait and wait and wait. On top of that the entrances to the parking encourage a lot of bad behavior among motorists. Its only a matter of time before theres a pedestrian fatality.

This is my local Safeway. I hate the parking lot and how difficult it is to get here, but sometimes, you have to make the trek as certain items can only be purchased here; produce, herbs and spices, ice cream cakes, etc. I would advise visiting another location, or visiting this store during off hours.

Honestly from all the grocery stores I been in by far this Safeway experiance was the worst. I came in to get a sandwich after long 3 days at the ICU due to my father having A heart attack when mother was very upset and she didnt eat So I thought of by Safeway deli I know they they have good sandwiches so I walk N and I asked to be made a sandwich and they were doing a shift change so the lady she came out of her duties to help me out with a sandwich because of the Main lady was leaving But she made me the sandwich and to only reason why I gave 2 stars but the bigger problem is once I got into the register to pay the Cashier this mid 20s girl Ring my stuff up and literally got up got her phone out And started looking this snapshot at Instagram photo bought a good 7 minutes while I am at the rich the waiting to pay and there is a light and I just looked at her surprised though she did with I cannot although a someone bear or shes even holding her phone on the On the shift she had a bright pink phone cover, After Being in shock I told her scuse me are you going to finish the transaction She threw her phone down and finished it this was the most unpleasant experience and specially other time that I am in A tough time But I just wanted to get out of there go back to the hospital This is why Safeway or any business earns badd stars for employees that they just not know their normal duties requirements I never wish or nobody any harm or them losing their job but if I was the manager for that Safeway I would have fired her on the spot

Not terribly excited about the speed of service here. Its borderline failing. Only safeway that is slower is on Jackson in Hayward. The deli workers are nice but slow and non accommodative during the lunch hours... What happened to Safeways superior service?

My local safe takes time to make me one which I normally get done any ways because we dont eat pork, I get the ham substituted for something else. What customer service? I called to find out if their Western Union machine was working. Spoke to someone in customer service who told me that the machine was working. I took the 20 minute bus ride there on my lunch break. I get there and the and not only is there a sign on the machine saying its out of order but theres no one available in the customer service department. Apparently the one person in the entire store who can do man the customer service desk is on their lunch break for an hour. So now Ive wasted my time and money. If only the person who answered the phone actually bothered to check if their WU machine was working. Thanks for nothing!

This Safeway is in the center of busy Grand ave. Really convinuint loacion. Although in front the door always has homeless, charity or other different organizations asking for some sort of favor.
