LOVED THIS BOOKSTORE! This is my first time coming here and I gotta say I was totally overwhelmed. Used books, collectable books, new books, DVDs and much much more! Prices are fair for both hardcover and softcover books. The employees were great. They meet u at door and ask if you need help immediately. Sorry to say but goodbye Barnes and Noble.. Im doing all my book worm shopping here....come spend some $$$ :)

One of the best collections of any bookstore I have ever been in. The shelves are overflowing, both with tons of copies of popular books and unique ones you’re unlikely to find elsewhere. The store is deceptively huge as well. The used books are all reasonably priced and in good shape. The one downside is there isn’t a store catalogue to search for a particular book but digging is part of the fun and the sections are well categorized. Bonus shoutout to the two kitties that live here!

This place has a great selection of curated books together with exciting nooks and crannies which seem haphazard but are actually sensibly organized. Every inch of the store is fascinating with books categorized in a whimsical yet appealing manner. There would be some wide-eyed discovery as you go through the shelves here. Of course there is a cat with a very strong personality!The only thing that kept me from giving the store five stars is that there was a sign which stated something similar to ‘Only for employees, trespassers would be kicked out’! Now, ‘kicked’ is a little too harsh!

The whole place is a calm vibe within the wall of great literary treasures. The childrens section is just adorable and I love the homie old-school vibe. The smell of old books is soothing and comforting to me. Hard to control me from buying everything. Parking out front and great prices. They also buy books on certain days. Love love loves this store.

I went in yesterday and boy did I feel amazed. There was a huge variety of books for all ages, and the workers were very nice and friendly :). I wish I spent more time there, but I also loved the smell in there. The fresh book scent always gets me. I’ll definitely be going back here!

Absolutely LOVE this bookstore. Always walk out with several hundred $ worth of gems. The art section is my absolute favorite. Prices are not always cheap. I’ve noticed some new books even more expensive than Amazon. However, I really love this bookstore and will continue to return and spend hours and $$ here.

I did have a problem with an order I placed with recycled books, but they acknowledge their mistake and were quick to remedy the situation. An easy avoidable problem that I hope R.B can remedy in the future. I like shopping with them, I just need my books to be accurately described, especially at the $80+ price point.

Great bookstore. Has everything organized and books are responsibly priced. The 4 star was only because the staff was not so friendly. Checked out and the cashier was just like set your books here and slapped the counter. No Hi no how are you? Or did you find what you needed? Nothing. The cats were friendlier then the staff.

Best bookstore in the Bay Area. Please support them. I come here to browse with my 17yo daughter, we both crave the old book store aroma! She likes the ecology and architecture sections, and I like the art books. I’ve bought several big beautiful glossy books for like $8 over the years. Tons of really really old antique books. Stop and pat the kitties. Great kids section. Plenty of free parking out front. Please don’t walk around talking on your phone :)

I would love to rate this book store, higher, as they have a huge selection of books. This is a great bookstore if you want to browse. If you are looking for any sort of technology books, don’t waste your time coming here. They have roughly 20 books only, and they are all at the very top shelf (you would need to ask and grab a ladder) . When I asked why, they have a very limited selection in a bookstore in the heart of Silicon Valley (tech capital), the clerk replied that the books go out of date very quickly (not true). but they have an entire section on ancient history, where the books are just falling apart and taking up rows of space (weird). Customer service could be better. A woman came in to take part in the book buyback, and instead of allowing her to place the stack of books she had in hand on the counter ( which was clear), the clerk asked her to put them on the floor and wait for the manager. When asked when and how long, the clerk replied “I don’t know, just wait…” 3 stars unfortunately. My recommendation to the ownership/management: make this place undeniable as a place where developers and people who actually buy books are willing to frequent. We are out there I assure you.

What an epic shop! A great mixture of used and some new books, all commingled. All the man fiction and similar is through the back - a trove.Costs are about $2_$4 for used paperbacks up to Amazon+ prices for new books.It is worth spending a bit more here to support such an institution.

Recycle Bookstore in San Jose stocks mostly used books but does carry a small number of popular new books. The store is huge and I cant imagine someone walking in and not finding a book they are interested in. The store has a friendly, knowledgeable staff and two furry live-in cats (one likes pets). This store is locally owned (support your community!) and a great place to wander and browse and buy books.

Recycle is one of my usual bookstores, and I usually go in every 2-3 months. I like the concept of bringing my books in to sell and using the credit to buy other second-hand books. I admit that in the past the atmosphere of this location is not my favourite, but its fine. Todays experience left a sour taste in my mouth. I just wanted to destress after a rather intense week, and I wandered in because I had 30 minutes to spare. I was greeted with: are you here to sell books. No. I have a small messenger bag, and I was told (for the first time in 5 years mind you) that I would need to leave my bag at the front but I could take my wallet and phone (and obviously anything else of value.) Im a woman - no pockets. So you want me to wander the store with the contents of my purse in my hand and what admire the spines of the books? Sorry but no. How exactly do you imagine people shop in bookstores - in all seriousness?I walked right out because I am not going to stand there argue about the obvious absurdity of the store policy (and how it might adversely disproportionately affect some people.) Yeah its your store policy and I adhered to it by NOT shopping there.

This bookstore is wonderful! It’s a bit deceiving since it looks like a “hole in the wall” but it has a variety of rooms and the shelves are labeled really well. You’ll find moderns and old beautiful books. They also have chairs and sitting stools throughout and the clerk is helpful and nice!

I understand the cats are a huge draw for this place but having my friend step in cat diarrhea and gag in their broken bathroom trying to clean it up was a definite low of my day and weekend personally. The employees didnt seem too concerned that a customer stepped in poop so I dont know. I guess the collection of books was ok. 10/10 would not recommend coming here for cats or books.

Wonderful bookstore! So many choices (new and used) including a nice section for kids. Its well organized but still feels like a real bookstore (if that makes sense) :) Extra bonus, there were at least 2 friendly cats in the store just hanging out which the kids of course loved. Fun and quiet bookstore with a good variety of books and I always leave with at least one book. My only concern is its becoming way too expensive for a used bookstore. I always prefer to support local businesses but when you can find a new version of the book online in the updated edition cheaper than what they are offering, its hard to pay more when you have a tight budget and want to support the local business. I am talking about a basic book, not rare, in demand, special edition or the only copy.However, I also understand that they are trying to stay in business too and a brick and mortar shop has much more expenses than an online store. I will support them as long as I can with my tightening budget, but will have to walk away with one book instead of my usual bag full.

As the name suggests, you can buy old books here and then sell them back. I visited this place once and what I like about them is the concept of returning the books (maybe not for exact same price) but I dont like to hoard books, so having the option is great..! I could do the same with public libraries but sometimes hold is too long in libraries.Dont expect books to be very neatly organized but I am sure the staff can help you look for a specific book.

A San Jose classic. I’ve been coming here since they were at their other location in downtown SJ. Just bought and sold some books here last month, and it has the same chill vibe as it did 35 years ago. A very pleasant place to spend an afternoon.

Books of all genres for all age groups, ranging from affordable to expensive in price. Sales are frequent. You can bring your old books and exchange them for cash or store credit. Store credit is double the cash value. Good amount of chairs spread throughout the shop, so they dont mind a little reading while browsing.There is an in-store cat. A Bookstore cat, like a Bodega cat. Made the place feel even more welcoming. 🤩

Great book store. I needed to sell four large boxes of books after my father passed away. The staff was super friendly and took the time to review all of the books and gave me a very honest price for everything they were interested in.They were also very honest about a set of books by telling me they were worth more than they could offer. They suggested I speak with someone else to get the best price.

I am a book lover and when I travel I do my best to patronize local businesses in particular bookstores. I will say I will not patronize this businessI think customer service was extremely lacking, when I walked in no one spoke when I went to check out the books that I was purchasing the gentleman (asian in a mask) said nothing he didnt say hey how is everything Did you find everything you were looking for?So what I did was I left the book right there at the counter and walked out.Having personability and customer service skills will get you more sales. But being distant, standoffish and not speaking to your customer as they enter and leave your store will not .This would be a reason that I would order my books from Amazon.Do better

Great store, if you can get there early. I would highly recommend this store if youre looking for an old time used book store and can get there before 6. Great selection with titles you just wont find in your local Barnes and Noble. Always a surprising find.However, between 7:30 and 7:40 the staff starts telling you they close in ten minutes and you get the distinct impression that theyd rather you leave so they can clock out early than finish your shopping.

I love hanging out here and picking up a book or too when Im in the neighborhood. They have some great series, authors, historical books, and sooo much great scifi and graphic novels! The folks who run the place(So sorry Ive never asked for your names, but I will next time!) are extremely kind, and go out of their way to help you find the books you need, or even suggest great reads! From vintage to contemporary - they nearly have it all, most books in near mint condition, which is rad.Its always a great treat to meet the stores in-house feline friends - especially Emma - whos warm and friendly to every visitor!Keep up the good work yall! :)

It is by far the biggest and best Used and new book store in the Bay Area. Tons of books reasonably priced. They even buy back some books. Fantastic low key staff, super friendly and though I am deathly allergic to cats they have some really nice Kittys there. And they just expanded and have more room for more books. Live this place!

Larger than the Campbell location and better-stocked. They take books for trade credit or cash and (like all decent used bookstores) they have a cat.The main room is mostly fiction. The rightmost aisle has a shelf dedicated to nice leather-bound volumes and comics/graphic novels along the right-hand wall. Theyve got some DVDs along the back wall. A doorway on the left leads to childrens/YA; a doorway on the right to everything non-fiction.If youre like me, youre more interested in the doorway at the back, which leads to sci-fi and fantasy. Theyve got mystery, manga, and non-fiction back there, too - but sci-fi and fantasy and theyve got tons of pulp! Super fun to look through.

I would give no stars. Let me start by saying how dare you guys judge a book by its cover, my father came in to look at some old books and when he asked for prices one of the employees was very rude to him and on top of that when my father asked for a price of something they quoted one price and then when he wanted to pay they bumped up the price. There’s so much more but basically the employees there took one look at him and made a judgment that they stuck to. It was very sad because he loves books and to be treated that way is uncalled for.

Recycle Bookstore is hands down my favorite bookstore in the Bay Area. Very wide selection, quiet space that is never crowded, helpful staff. I always walk out with a book or two, whether for myself or as a gift.Im thankful that it is open during quarantine. The ambiance is cozy, well-kept, and clean, even pre-Covid. I prefer buying used books, and their items are always in great condition. I also am able to find titles that I dont usually see stocked in other bookstores.Please keep local bookstores alive. This is one of my favorite places to visit in San Jose! Their collection is incredible. The staff is sweet and always available to help. I was walking around the shop with my baby in my arms carrying a few books and one of the ladies working their came to me offering to hold my books at the counter. I go their as often as I can! Always support local!! With a recently expansion of a more robust children/teen section. This not so hidden gem has been my go too for years depending on my seasonal tasted. Only improvement is some type of catalogue, Ive called many times to ask if they had a particular book, they dont keep track. There is a phenomenal selection of both used and new books here! We came with a list of books we were hoping to find only to find each one- quite the treat. We appreciated the procedure to come in as youre expected to wait before entering, use hand sanitizer, each person needs to wear masks properly and stay away from other customers.March 28,2022 edit: still in love with this place. They do allow vaccinated folks to come in with no mask, but you do need to wear a mask if you chose to not get vaccinated.

Perfect place for book lovers to spend an hour or two, looking for interesting books the old fashioned way. If you like to just search for books without anything specific in mind, this is the place to hit. There are new as well as used books. Rates are mostly reasonable and the conditions of the books are also very well. Plus there is a cat to watch over you. Majority are fiction, however non-fiction is also available.

If you are allergic to cats I wouldnt recommend going here. The cats were part of the deal ( even though the original cats have long since past ) the owners still honor the deal. One of my favorite used stores, this meandering, multi-room treasure has a resident cat, buys or trades as well as sells used and some new books and has a diverse collection of genres. Every visit is a new exploration. There is plenty of room to browse or sit for a moment and thumb through a possible purchase. A wonderful and quirky used bookstore. I love the cats and they add charm to the aisles and aisles of books to peruse. The owner and staff are helpful and polite. They are very interested in keeping a good inventory that doesnt just include popular titles and topics. I find most of the books reasonably priced below the list price.You can sell or trade in books. Bear in mind they have to keep their doors open, so there are some books they cant take because they will not sell. Call and ask if youre not sure of what will sell or trade.There is a little bit of everything here, but some strong collecting areas that I appreciate are the poetry, religion, metaphysics, literature areas. They also have an ample selection of literature for children and young adults.

Excellent source of some rare and otherwise used books. The prices are decent, the staff knowledgeable and the cats keep the house in order. If theres a need, they buy back books or give a bit more in store credit. Ive been coming to this particular store for years for all kinds of craft books, or when I need a book in an old series and its not at the library. Its sort of old fashioned with stacks of books piled up and cartloads of books waiting to be shelved. Also some old magazines and quarterlies. Its cozy enough to spend quality time in.Great place in my opinion.

Overall, this book store is very cozy and comfy. Quite happy for the most part. I like the place interiorly a lot. It feels amazing. There was only like, one cat outside when I came here. It was cute. But I saw how rude the rules were written out, pretty out of place for a book store tbh. And that two way mirror I noticed scared me a little while I was just trying to get a book. Also the hand sanitizer was there, but it was smelly and spoiled and made my hands stunk. Other then those few problems, its nice. Very large selection of all kinds of books, could easily spend an hour just browsing. But plan to spend about that long in here because the categorization does not make it particularly easy to find anything (i.e. I couldnt find Stephen King even after searching in Horror, Mystery/Thriller, and Fiction) but assumed they would have some kind of computerized indexing system where if someone was searching for a specific book or author they could look up exactly where to find it in the store. Also, fair warning, they are very particular about what books they buy back. Allegedly, only brand-new editions of books are accepted (wont take hardcovers if a paperback version has since been released, etc.)

Found a set of antique books I have been looking for online. I just needed volume 1, but it was being sold by Recycle Bookstore as a 3 volume set. The price of the set was about what I was looking to spend for just the 1 volume and it said great shape, but there was no picture and $240 was a little steep to take chances. Called the bookstore on a whim and spoke with a very helpful gentleman named Eric. He took the time to pull the books to make sure it was what I was looking for and took my info over the phone. I was nervous as the books traveled all the way fro California to Florida but when they finally arrived it was like Christmas! Eric assured me they were in great condition, but they were almost like new! So glad I contacted them and did business with this store! This was the first bookstore that I went to post COVID shelter in place lift. Real impressive store. I love how it is organized in various sections, so you can browse by author and category. Will definitely come back again to kill a few hours. I just hope there will be areas to sit at in the future, but realize that store fronts may be changing away from that due to health considerations.

Always a great place to escape and find another world to escape in. I mostly read fiction, but theres a wide and wonderful selection for all sorts of content. The atmosphere is everything one might imagine in a bookstore. Soft but well lit. Almost but not quite cramped shelves of books, all overflowing with some even stacked on the floor and some step ladders. Even the slight creak in the floor boards are quiant and endearing. Cozy barely scratches the surface. This place is truly any readers dream.

Very easy to drive by this place without knowing its there. Parking is on the side or on the main Street. The store is pretty big and have tons of used books in great shape. Comics like brand new and a small collection of DVDs also. They buy books also (not on Sunday) and plenty of people come in for that so sometimes you have to wait. They give the option of taking cash or store credit for little extra.

In terms of selling used books, I disagree with a previous reviewer. The prices offered here for good quality, well preserved books are quite low. I had $600-650 worth of used books that were from top publishers like Oxford UP, and were in good shape. Their only liability was that they were older. The bookstore rejected about half of them and gave me $20 for the rest. That is a ridiculous amount and I am not going back to sell any more books.

A used book store saves you from paying shipping and handling. Moreover, its nice to think of books sitting in an old and grimy place--waiting for a curious patron to inattentively flip their pages. I guess thats why book stores are still around; not because people save money or find rare titles while standing in front of a shelf of old crap. This place is terrific--a book hunters paradise. Shelves loaded from top to bottom, stacks on the floor, 3 huge connected rooms, books everywhere! And yet, the place is well-organized. Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. They have titles ranging from great antiquity to new publications and my favorite aspect of the Recycle Bookstore is that they have loads of 19th Century works mixed in with newer titles throughout the store. Its a treasure hunt everytime I go. I Highly recommend you go somewhere else until Im done collecting!

A great bookstore with thousands of new and used books! It is best not to come with a specific book in mind as the organization of the shelves leaves much to be desired. Mostly used books spilling from the shelves into crates or sometimes just piles on the floor, there is always something to pique your interest.We visit from time to time, but Today my son and I found the rest of a pair of series he is reading. I found and was reminded of some my favorites from the past I want to get his mother to read. Then I just started finding weird little gems, like the original Mercedes McLaren GTR book that came with the car at launch! Amazingly cool and not something youll find at a big box.The other thing is the knowledge of the inventory. Didnt see any computers, organization is haphazard at best, but somehow the older gentleman behind the desk seemed to have far ro strong a grasp on what they had, how many, and where.Now the shop small, shop local movement is great, but often times poor service and high prices have been excused, but here the service was great, prices of the Couple new books we got were not only below cover, but even below the barnes and noble member prices!Please check them out, support local because they are, and they are still better than the national brands.

Discovered Recycle Bookstore through my son last week. Great store, great find, and great reads. I couldnt wait to tell my brother about it since he loves reading, and buying books every chance he gets. Well turns out he already knew about Recycle Bookstore back from the time he attended San Jose State University and how he would visit the bookstore regularly. This is a local jem, a place that I want to visit every single weekend. As a Chinese, I used to mainly read in Chinese. But after finding this place, I realize myself reading more and more in English, because there are just so many interesting books out there, in each genre. I personally like the literature and history section there the best. I see some comments complain about bad organizing of the books, but in my opinion used bookstore is just not expected to be well organized in the same way new book store is. And I find the history section very well organized, into American history, civil war, two world wars (even section specifically about Hitler), etc. I would wish they have better social science collection, but its already a superb bookstore! I should barely ask for more.

Think about it.If you’re used to paying full retail for books, you need to visit this store to break that habit. This place is a treasure-trove of music books and books of all sorts. There are so many books passing through its worth it to visit as a weekly routine.Hm, especially music books .... they have opera libretti, I saw a series of books on piano jazz by Art Tatum, there are just treasures galore.However, the music books are so plentiful that there are stacks of them besides the shelves of them and rolling carts overloaded with them. I was looking for trumpet books and wanted to access one of the higher shelves, so to make a space to put one of the step-ladder-y things, I tried moving one of the rolling carts, as I had in the past .... BLOOSH!! Over it went! And nailed me on the leg because with the stacks of books there wasnt room to jump clear. which hurt. Not as much as the time a skateboard hit me in the leg but pretty painful.Some colorful language was issued and I went to the front and collected my trumpet, which theyd had me check there, and muttered something about having just gotten Amazon Prime as I left, but seriously, I love this place and consider it a treasure to be supported and cherished.Update May 2021: They have indeed enlarged their store, taking over a space next door, and book-a-lanches seem to no longer be a risk. Its bigger, airy-er, and even more friendly than ever.

If you like books, you could spend hours just browsing here. Ive found a lot of sci-fi here, but whatever subject youre looking for, they probably have it. Its also located in an older building with character, the complete opposite of the modern/sterile style.

I love books, and bookstores. Recycled Books is epitome of the stereotypical used bookstore, lots of books on shelves and piled on the floor waiting for space. There are some real gems out in the stacks. I found many more books than I was ready to buy. We will be back for sure.

Old school. Tons of books from new best sellers to really old curiosities and everything in between. Theres even a 🐈 and employees are readers.We love this place and the sister store in downtown Campbell.

I have enjoyed Recycle Bookstore since the 1970s, albeit with a long gap up to now. This new (to me) location has all the ambience a biblioholic could ask for, creaky floor, stroke-demanding cats, and that ineffable scent of old books. And lots of them, too. Long may they remain.

Terrific selection and incredibly helpful staff. Im a fiction writer, so the books I was looking for were particularly literary, story collection because thats what I am working on, and RBS came through! I scored Pulse by Julian Barnes and The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, not the likeliest books to find.RBS also has a magnificent sci-fi collection. Alas, I am currently off Sci-fi or I would have bought some Le Guin.

A great and big selection of old and used books. If you looking for anything chances are they will have it here. Besides a small New selection of books, RBS is always a treat walk into if you love the smell of books.
