This place is a safe haven for young music fans in Sonoma County and beyond. Kudos to the man, Mr. GAFFEY, that makes it happen. Ive taken my grandchild there for shows. The kids are all respectful and kind to each other. What an expressive outlet for so many kids.

Cool venue. Skate park by day, rock shows at night! I went to go see Invader at the Phoenix Theater and had one hell of a night. The building was cool. A lot of young kids. Ran by young kids. But the sound was great and the lighting was great too. And…..INVADER KILLED IT!!!

I’ve visited this place with friends but also to write an article about it for my school journalism class magazine and it’s just such a great place. The vibes, the community, the people managing the theater are all amazing. The Phoenix has stood the test of time and I hope it will continue that way.

The Phoenix is a gem. Truly a beloved, community-minded haven offering free youth services, and also an awesome venue for live music. It operates as a nonprofit and has great resources for younger Petalumans. Its home to a teen health clinic and is a safe place to gather (skate, do homework, take music lessons, etc.).If youre coming here for a show, dont expect luxury. Its spirit is in its grit. Its an all-ages venue, so no bar (there are snacks and non-alcoholic drinks sold in the lobby). Ive been coming here since the early 1990s and its physical makeup feels almost the same. Tom Gaffey is golden, and obviously pours his heart and soul into the place. Its such a fun, energetic, soulful venue to see bands play and one of my favorite things about downtown Petaluma.Im really grateful that The Phoenix still offers a beautiful space to see great bands. It makes me happy to see it still having a positive impact on the community.

The Phoenix remains gritty and punk and a great place to see a show. Dont expect luxuries like a coat check or a bar, and youll need to climb some stairs for the toilet. One of the faucets might even work. Five stars for keeping it real, not a five-star venue by any stretch.

The Phoenix Theater is an amazingly beautiful and large venue that I think all local bands should play at at least once in their career. The Phoenixs had many famous names play there and, in my opinion, just makes the Theaters reputation and history even cooler. Definitely see a show there, its a hell of an experience. 5 stars all the way!

This is absolutely the worst, most disgusting, poorly organized venue Ive ever been to in my life...and Ive been to hundreds of shows at similar-sized places. I drove here all the way from Fremont a couple of days ago to see a local band I really like and left wondering how local authorities havent shut this place down.The door seemed to be worked by a bunch of 16yr olds who really didnt seem to care much if you paid or not. If i didnt want to support the band so much, I would have just walked in. All of their little buddies were just coming in and out anyways and skateboarding around the lobby. Annoying plus safety hazard.The place is completely falling apart. Damaged floors, walls, electrical wires just strewn about unprotected. The place is covered with graffiti inside, and not in an artistic way, in a super trashy way. The building is completely filthy and probably hasnt seen a mop in months.The concert hall itself is clearly modified during the day to be an indoor skate park. The ramps and grind poles were just pushed off to the side, very much in the way of patrons. At one point a grinding pole fell down on a kid. Thankfully that kid didnt get hurt. No one seemed to care.Also this is the worst sound system Ive heard in a venue this size. Ive seen the same band multiple times at places in San Francisco and they sound great. Its the venue not the band. Fuzzy the whole time. Not a good sound for a band that relies on really intricate riffs and song composition.I didnt see a concession stand anywhere for food or drinks. I wasnt really looking for it, but at most venues like this, they have concessions all up in your face so that they can make money. Something im discovering this venue has no interest in. I did see a vending machine that no one was approaching. So if you are hungry an thirsty, tank up and hydrate prior to coming.On top of everything, the show was empty, which I know is not entirely the venues fault. I mean I realize Petaluma isnt an ideal place to book a local thrash show and most people wouldnt make the trip even if they like the band. However based on the lack of care and pride taken in the facility itself, you can tell they put as much effort into promoting this show as they do in the upkeep of the building.Someone buy this place and turn it into a gym or something.

I grew up going here. My first memory of going to the Phoenix it was still A movie theater. I saw the movie E.T. Also seen the first ROCKY the boxing movie. Im sure Ive seen more than that too. On week days it was a movie theater. Had movie posters around the outside of whats showing, and up coming. I like looking at the posters. And on weekends its was a concert hall. For local bands to show their stuff. Also the spectators to release their passion of all different kinds of music. Off the top of my head of what I remember? To name a few bands that played at the Phoenix is...Death Angle, Les Claypool of Primus, George Theirgood and the Destroyers, Snoop Dogg when he was going under a new name the Loin?, Ice T with his metal band Body Count, Slashes snake pit. Slash as in Guns and Roses Slash and best for last Slayer & METALICA! played here. When METALICA started they pumped out a new amazing album every year. They took a break for a couple years. But When they put together the Black Album. They played at the Phoenix to try the songs live. Before the album released. To see the reactions of the crowd. Before they were to take it on the road.Plus So many other great bands that I know i will remember as soon as I post this and have to edit over and over again. Bands love this place. The acoustics are perfect.Now none of that would have happened with out TOM GAFFIE. He has kept this place from closing by the skin of his teeth. Its a good place for kids, adults and bands of all kinds to express themselves. Tom is the most kind and thoughtful person. To keep this open as long as he has. Thinking of others. Other than himself. For a long time there was a snack bar counter with popcorn and candy. Behind that was a room for the arcade. Tom had video games in that room and the lobby. Great selection of games too. I can only imagine the abuse and up keep that was. Now with games on your phone. Stand up video games dont make money like they use to.Go check this place out. See a show. An old building always needs some work. Its a little grungy. But if you dont like that. Find a way to help make it a better place. Keep the music alive here at a historical Petaluma building. Say HI to Tom.

Our visit to the Phoenix Theatre was fun! As you walk in, the first thing you notice is the stark white walls are covered in random graffiti. Its mostly random, but there are some beautiful murals in some places. Dont read the graffiti in the womens bathroom if you are faint of heart! They dont have food or drinks other than a vending machine that had $1 sodas and candy, which was fine. We sat upstairs and the seats were comfortable. The sound for all bands was not great. I could barely hear the singers at all up or downstairs. Im not sure if this was the venue or their setup but thats the only reason why I took off one star. Definitely worth going back!

Went 1/13/18 for Homesick a concert fest that went from 2pm-12 that evening, and although there seemed to be a lot of cool bands I went to see Power Trip. Power Trip rocked hard and was super stoked to see them in such a small venue. Im pushing almost 50, but held my own banging my head against the stage, dodging an onslaught of stage divers, and partook on my own stage dive, which may have been my last, of the many Ive done, in my lifetime of going to shows. If this show were my last to thrash in the pit and do a stage dive, I can live with that, and hope to see Power Trip in the Metal Scene for years to come. And, Yes! An awesome venue I hope to visit again soon, although I live about 150 miles away!

This is a youth hangout by day, and a concert hall by night. The owner, tom, is very friendly. The building is haunted (according to several sources.) The place is downtown Petaluma, so its a bit of a hassle to get there by car, but biking is perfect. There is not much to say other than the fact to not play with ouija boards, as you WILL be kicked out, as the owner and about everyone there things its haunted. So beware of that. Its like a community center for the local area that hosts bands. Street-art and skateboard ramps everywhere. Nice sound system and production staff. Watch out for stray skateboards and bicycles rolling by everywhere inside. And when its an all-ages show, they mean ALL-ages. Toddlers to old timers. Phoenix Theater has such sights to show you.

You either stand downstairs (recommended and if you do I would move my review from hate to dislike) or sit in the balcony where the seats that arent run down are broken. More than one person went right down to the floor, and the floor and the venue else where is simply filthy. They have set a motley collection of old office chairs around tho. Balcony is very dark and hard to see your way around tho. Went to the rest room upon arrival and it was already horrid. Yucky to infinity. Easy parking tho!Added: I have been in most of the seedy bar venues in San Francisco and this was much, much worse.

Saw a wonderful play of Les Misarables. The actors were from Music to my Ears. Brilliant 13 year old actor starred whose name was Ronnie Neilsen. All actors did a fabulous job. Some will become stars.

Ive always loved the Phoenix Theater because he has kept it open for all the local talent. My 14 yr old son and I just seen a concert there a couple weeks ago. Phenomenauts and Tsunami Bomb played, giving all the proceeds from the show straight back to the community. To our SoCo Music Coalition, who is now being housed by the Arlene Francis Center. SoCo MC opened their doors right after the fires, giving our kids a wonderful place to learn music, as a positive way to escape the stress and fear from the fires. Proceeds also went to the Redwood Empire Food Bank who continues to help fire victims and anyone who needs extra food. We thank the Phoenix Theater for letting local talent continue to play. There will even be a wedding there!
