Thank you to Dr. Michal, Mandy, and the rest of the PETS Referral team for taking such wonderful care of our pup, Clark.Our pup was trying unsuccessfully to throw up, having difficulty swallowing, and was clearly in distress. At the recommendation of her vet, we took her into emergency care to get her checked out. The team at PETS was professional, kind, thorough, and efficient when it came to triaging and treating our girl. The quote for Clarks treatment was priced in a range based on possible treatments, as it was unclear what was going on until the doctor checked her out. When I returned to pick her up, I was refunded the difference between the cost of treatment and the deposit I paid. The price for her treatment was reasonable and fair, and everything about PETS felt professional, ethical, and confidence-inspiring.While there, I saw the PETS team providing the same high level of care to other people with their pups, and I feel fortunate to have a place like PETS nearby.Thank you for everything! Your dedication to such a challenging line of work is truly admirable. Yall are saints for the care and attention you provide to our furry friends. We are truly grateful for folks like you!

I visited PETS yesterday morning, after a sleepless night with a sick dog, and couldnt be more pleased with the experience (obv, the dog is OK).The techs were all SUPER friendly and attentive, as was the Dr (Dr Jarvis). I wish I had gotten names so I could call more people out for being so awesome! I arrived at around 6-6:30am, and they even made sure there was coffee readyJack (the dog) and I highly recommend PETS!

It was our third emergency visit to the PETS Referral Center, and we felt cared for every time! However, this time, we had a VERY serious emergency with our cat!We arrived during the late evening hours, and they took care of my kitty with a blocked bladder immediately and saved his life. 🥰 Couldn’t be more grateful! It might be pricey, but when your cat has a severe emergency after all the places are already closed, nothing matters! I HIGHLY recommend this place for your kitty. We got an invoice for 4800 dollars for hospitalization for 48 hours, but then our kitty was okay after 36 hours, and they let us know immediately that he was ready to go home, and then we got over 1000 dollars refund. Loved it! Oh - during our pet’s hospitalization, we were able to visit him - posting a pic of my kitty from our visit with him. So glad to have my kitty back home. Thank you, PETS Referral Center. 😻

The whole staff is amazing. Attentive, calm, professional, and kind. Opthomologist Mitzi Zarfos worked a minor miracle with my dogs detached lens that was causing him terrible pain. I am so grateful to have this special service so near to home.

Great experience at PETS Referral Center. On a visit to Berkeley from NYC, Sam, our Golden, started limping after no apparent injury. PETS Referral Center saw him right away, the wait was short, and all the staff top notch. Blood work turned up something potentially serious (including possibly Cancer, which kills a lot of Golden Retrievers young), but instead of advising more tests then and there, the vet recommended we wait until we returned home for a further workup, since it could also be something that Sam could fight off with a little time, rest, and some anti-inflammatory meds.Some vets would have seized the opportunity to push (and charge for) more tests at the outset, but this Berkeley vet was very balanced as to how it could be serious but might very well not be, while not sugar-coating things and making it clear that follow-up at home was essential. He explained that there was no risk in waiting a couple of weeks for our vet at home to follow up, especially since that vet would be advising us as to any further treatment. At the same time, he was very direct, while kind and measured in delivering inconclusive but scary news. By the time we got home, Sam was on the mend and blood work by our regular vet showed that the earlier problem had resolved itself. A happy ending. I cant imagine better interim care while traveling. Recommend highly.

I never thought I’d be writing a review of an emergency vet center but here I am.My poor 6 month old baby accidentally ate some grapes (which I didn’t know were toxic) and after some impossibly helpful advice from the ASPCA and this center we decided to proactively give her an IV and keep her here for 48 hours to monitor her kidneys and help flush her out. During this time every single vet and vet tech/nurse was so impossibly kind, supportive, patient, educated, and compassionate.I felt safe keeping my baby there and knew she was in great hands. It’s not cheap, for sure, but pet insurance was crucial and I was so grateful for their care of my pup. I was also so happy they let me visit her and all of the staff throughout 24 hours a day were so so kind.I hope to never come back, but if I do I’ll be grateful they’re here!

We took our dog there two weeks ago because she was short of breath. She was promptly diagnosed with an aspiration pneumonia and needed to be hospitalized. I can’t stress enough how much Im thankful for the care the whole team provided to my little one. From reception to nurses and doctors, everyone was very caring and compassionate. They made us feel comfortable by providing reports frequently and being very transparent about everything they were doing. Thank you so much to the whole team for everything you did for our beloved Antonella.

Our family was deeply grateful to Dr. Nate Kane and the team at PETS this week when our beloved 15 1/2 year old, already not well, dog had a crisis and needed to be seen in an acute emergency. We found the staff super kind and caring, and Dr. Kane extremely sensitive, knowledgeable, and able to deal with the complexity of the hard decisions we needed to make in a way that truly lessened the trauma for us. The wait time was short and simply everything about this clinic was stellar in our opinion. We recommend PETS and look forward to coming back for future care of our animals.

I love this place. Their staff, Drs and nurses are kind, helpful, thorough and compassionate. My dog is seen by Opthalmology and Oncology here. Excellent experiences, great advice, beyond excellent care. I cannot say enough good things about them. We see Dr Knight and Dr Murray and my dog adores them both. She wags her tail when we go to this vet.

Barely any wait time to be seen and the nurses and Vet were very kind and treated my dogs face wound when she was attacked by another dog. The initial price they gave us was more then we could afford so thankfully they worked with us on that and we had her (my puppy) back first thing in the morning. Would very much recommend.

My dog had an emergency last night and PETS Referral Center took fantastic care of him. The staff was kind and did a great job explaining the treatments. They were transparent about the cost of treatments and helped us figure out the best course of action. My dog is recovering and I’m so thankful for the care he received here.

I cant recommend PETS highly enough, both their ER and oncology department. A little over a year ago, my 15-year-old Yorkie was diagnosed with highly aggressive melanoma and Dr. Kimberly Shaffer became his oncologist in the PETS Annex Center. Dr. Shaffer was great at explaining all our treatment options and how they worked. She was super patient with us as we asked a thousand questions, even when we doubted her conclusions because we didnt want to believe our dog was really dying. Franklin hated going to his regular vet, but the staff at PETS treated him so lovingly that he didnt really mind going there.Last week, to our utter devastation, Franklin finally reached a point where we had to end his suffering. We knew we wanted to go to PETS because it was the one veterinary hospital that didnt make him anxious. It was also really nice that we only have to give them a half-hour notice. We actually chickened out on our first attempt to take him in and called to say we needed another day, and the staff was nothing but sweet and understanding of our decision. In fact, thats how that they were every time we called. We did have to go back the next night and they set up a room that was peaceful and private for us to say our final goodbyes. As awful as it felt to lose a member of our family this way, the experience was so much more bearable because of the empathy and love of the people at PETS.Franklin was actually the second pet Ive had to say goodbye to at PETS. Three years ago, our cat suddenly became ill, so we went to the ER because we couldnt get an instant appointment at our regular vet. Unfortunately, they were not able to save her that day, but we were impressed with how kind everybody was even then.If I could make them my primary care vet, I would, but thats not what they do. Losing a pet is one of the worst things in the world, and hopefully, you wont have to do the same as us on your visit to PETS, but you can trust that any visit there will be handled with care, competence, and compassion. I honestly, dont know how they are able to maintain this level of care 24/7.

Nothing but bunch of crooks!!! Money money money is all they are about! We brought our sick dog. Initially got a bill for nearly $6000 ( deposit). They painted doom and gloom. They gave us a list of potential problems but no concrete answers . They wanted out dog to spend the night at $6000 . We took our dog home and he is doing as well as can be suspected. Never will if I need medical care for my pets will I return. Update (2/3/24) my dog is extremely well. What pet referral did was an absolute nightmare. They terrorized my wife with a “ possible “ fatal diagnosis along with potential other problems but no concrete diagnosis: Lung Lobe Torsion ( extreme rare, fluid in the lung, infection in the lung…. They presented us with a bill for $6000 for basically doing nothing except an x- ray!!!! They wanted our dog to stay the night for observation for $4000 telling my sobbing wife ‘ He could possibly die if we take him home. We recommend leaving him with us tonight.” Then they said we need to do more diagnostics in the morning with an ultra sound and possibly a CT scan for another $4000 on top of the $6000 for a total of $10,000+!!!! $10,000 for just a diagnosis????? They continue saying he could have this very rare diagnosis. They didn’t care about the other possible problems ( fluid in one lung ( maybe) and lung infection). They picked the most expensive possible diagnosis that would cost possibly $10,000 to diagnosis and surgery would be another $10,000 for a grand total of $20,000!!!!! My wife was being terrorized and it seemed they took advantage of my wife’s trauma. We asked can we take our dog home and they recommended against it saying “ your dog could die tonight in your home.” Even the thought of putting our dog came up. I am glad to say two weeks later our dog is as healthy as can be…. Running, jumping all over the place. He was never ill and the vet prognosis was your dog may die. Unbelievable experience and it cost us $2,000 and they absolutely did nothing for our dog… no prescription for a lung infection— NOT ONE DAMN THING!!!!! Again our baby is perfectly healthy and very much alive. Bad vet experience!!!!

We had the best experience taking our dog here when he was having respiratory issues. A very nice nurse named Bunny was thorough in explaining what steps would happen, and how billing would work, then she took our little dog back to get his vitals done. When they returned she had good news for us: that he was healthy overall and that the breathing issue was due to an allergic reaction would clear up with regular Benadryl. She ended up not charging anything at all, which was far beyond our expectation of kindness. We will definitely be coming back here for any future emergencies.

We have had to come to PETS several times with different animals over the years and what was once my go-to, “they will fix it” place has declined into a terrible, “can’t be bothered” hospital. Maybe if your pet has physical, visible trauma they are still okay to treat them. But stay away for anything internal—they will not listen, let your pet suffer for hours before doing anything, and hardline on the most obvious/standard diagnosis even when the symptoms don’t match what they are communicating is the issue, and telegraph blame to the pet parent. They are not staffed appropriately or with the right expertise to be handling urgent cases with complexity.

Great staff. Prices are not that bad considering they will most likely attend to your needs pretty quickly without an appointment. I have brought my cat and 2 bunnies here. Highly recommend.

He is a reactive pup and the staff are always so patient with him. Having to take him in during pandemic times, we appreciate how communicative the staff are during the whole experience. I would give them a million stars if I could. Our 9 y.o. Alaskan Malamute, Murray, was diagnosed with anaplastic sarcoma and we were referred to them by our amazing primary care vet (Leah Isaacson @ Walnut Creek Vet Hospital) after we were rejected by UC Davis Oncology for an appointment. Im so glad it worked out that way because our whole experience from reception, appointment scheduling, Oncology, Surgery and post-op has been amazing and they really moved quickly to help get us in for an oncology & surgical consult to help save Murray. The doctors were very up front and realistic about treatment and costs, really taking into account Murrays quality of life and not trying to sell anything. Leg amputation was the best chance at saving his life and giving him hopefully another couple of years. They moved quickly to accommodate us and scheduled his surgery as soon as we got all the reports back showing no metastasis. They got the last report in the evening, called me after-hours because they knew we were already on borrowed time, and they got us in for surgery first thing in the morning. This is a phenomenal hospital and team. They are professional, kind, caring and even though they are a busy hospital, whenever Ive called with questions they are always so nice and helpful. They all love what they do and took the best care of our Murray and saved his life! Thank you Pets Referral Center!

Brought our dog up last Sunday to find out after an ultrasound that she has a large tumor on her spleen. We spent several hours throughout the day getting different tests and exams done which included a little over an hour in the waiting room while she got an X-ray and labs. While it wasn’t immediately apparent how busy they were if you just saw the waiting room, I kept getting flashes of how busy they were in the back as different workers came in and out of their back room. I couldn’t believe how much our vet was juggling bc it never felt like she had any other patients but our dog. It really felt like she took a lot of time talking to us and listening to us. Her exam felt thorough and we left feeling well taken care of. I’m really grateful for the team that took care of us.

I took my cat there because he hadnt eaten in 2 days. They have me waiting for over three and a half hours. My cat was stuck in his carrier all that time. He may have had to go to the bathroom he may have been thirsty he may have been hungry and I could not wait any longer I left. That is just not right.

I have lived in Oakland for over twenty years with three different dogs, and I have always struggled to find a vet that felt just right. My dog came down with a high fever, no appetite, and lethargy, and needed to be hospitalized over night while tests were run. After being told there was a 6-8 hour wait at a/the oakland pet hospital, during which i would have to sit in the car in the parking lot with my my sick dog, I walked directly into PETS referral and was given EXCELLENT Care from stem to stern. The vets were knowledgable and kind and very willing to discuss options to help me understand what they wanted to do and why. the assistants fell in love with my sweet girl, and everyone took time to communicate with kindness. My dog is back home and the cost was under what they had originally estimated. THANK YOU PETS REFERRAL!!!

I have had to take my cat (Bear) here for a few visits recently for recurring issues at times when my regular vet has not been open. They are my preferred emergency vet. They are very kind and compassionate and do a wonderful job and are really responsive. They are in a temp spot as their regular offices get renovated so be aware of that. Everyone here is nice and for emergency care - their prices are fair - it is more than your regular vet but not outrageous. They have come through for me and I will always go here for ER stuff for my cat.

My 2 year old cat Bogey jumped two stories off of our balcony and fell on a cement bird bath last January. He was screaming and covered in blood. I immediately called PETS referral center and brought him in. I was so worried and they did an amazing job. They monitored him for around 8 hours to make sure he didn’t have a concussion, took scans, and ran a full panel. The vet called me after about three hours to tell me how Bogey was doing and how exactly his medicine should be administered. It was around $700 and worth every penny. I also had to bring my cat Bella in because she had a terrible allergic reaction to flea meds. Once again it was amazing service and I highly recommend taking your pets here when there is an emergency! I meant to write this review a while ago but Bogey had his yearly check up since this accident and it reminded me.

The ER is completely unprofessional, I arrived at 11pm last night, with my dog coughing and choking. After waiting for half an hour in the lobby, when I pushed to have his vitals taken, I was quickly ushered outside and told he might be infectious and that we would need to wait in our car. The triage nurse did not take his vitals, and tightened his collar to the point that it exacerbated the choking.The triage nurse informed us the wait would be 1-2 hours (it is worth noting that the last time I came to PETS referral I was told it would be 1-2 hours and it was instead 6 hours). After waiting 2 hours I attempted to call in, respecting that the staff did not want my dog in the lobby. The phone rang for 30 minutes before I gave up and went to Pacific Veterinary in Lafayette where my dog had his vitals taken immediately and where the wait time estimates were accurate.To add insult to injury, at 9:30am I received a call saying they werent quite ready to see my dog. It is appalling that anybody would find it acceptable at an ER to leave a patient waiting without even taking vitals to assess the urgency of the case. While I understand triaging patients, there was no assessment taken to even determine the urgency of a dog who was stopping breathing intermittently (which we informed the nurse of).I would not recommend anyone take their dog to the ER here for care.

Fantastic, caring, professional, and helpful.My dog was attacked at a park and as I was rushing him to another emergency hospital in Berkeley, the same dog attacked a friend’s dog in the same manner. The dogs are the same size and the wounds were almost identical. He took his dog here while I took mine to the other emergency hospital in Berkeley, where my dog is also a regular patient.I ended up paying more than $1000 more at the other hospital than my friend who came here. (They also charged me for blood work despite the tech noting that he has just had blood work done there 1.5 months ago which looked perfect, and the veterinarian also tried to push an unnecessary ultra sound exams that would cost thousands, and said X-Rays would also be good to have. My friend who brought his dog here did not deal with any of this.)Well two days later my dog had popped his stitches and I decided to bring him here. I braced for the worse, but right away I was treated far better than at the other hospital. The veterinary technician brought my dog back almost immediately, unlike at the other place, and they were out within a minute. I was told that the veterinarian had taken a look at the wound and feels that it’s healing well and would not recommend stitching him up again!I was not charged for this and sent on my way. It is incredible seeing such honesty and kindness from this practice! At the other hospital, where my dog is a regular patient, it was necessary to pay an emergency exam fee before they even took the dog’s weight. I feel the other practice is a straight up money grab and exploits and preys on people who are distressed about the health of their beloved pet.I whole heartedly recommend this practice to anyone whose pet is experiencing an emergency or any other condition which they treat. I will be bringing my pet here and have already recommended it to all my friends with pets.Thank you Pets Referral Center!

This was the only place in a 30 miles radius who was able to see us same day (or night in this case) I called several emergency clinics and the wait time was between 6-10 hours, while I understand they may be understaffed I wanted my pup to be seen sooner than later.Check in was fast and easy, staff was friendly, the doctor explained to us what needed to be done and why.Total wait time and treatment 2.5 hours and prices were reasonable.

I recently visited Pets Referral Center with my dog who was suffering from blood diarrhea. I was desperate to see a doctor as my dog had lost a lot of blood and fluid. The staff at Pets Referral Center were amazing and helped us with our dog, providing top-notch care and treatment.One thing that really stood out to me was their approach to treatment. Rather than immediately prescribing antibiotics, they provided probiotics, which shows that they prioritize finding the most effective and least invasive treatment for their patients. This was a refreshing approach to pet care, and its great to see that they are keeping up with the latest research and trends in the field.The wait time was about 5 hours, which was still significant and thats why I gave it 4 star, but it was much better than the 9 hours I had to wait at another hospital previously. The only downside was not being informed about how long the wait would be, but the staff were friendly and helpful throughout the entire process.thats why I gave it 4 starOverall, I would highly recommend Pets Referral Center to anyone in need of veterinary services. They provided excellent care and service, and Im grateful for all they did for my little dog. If youre looking for a veterinary center that prioritizes effective and compassionate care, look no further than Pets Referral Center.

No one wants to visit an emergency vet, but when an emergency requires your pet to be seen, this is the place to go.Dr. Haughton saved our cats life this weekend. She helped us make appropriate and most affordable choices when our female cat had a serious urinary blockage. Yes it was expensive, yes we had to come back over two days as there were many animals that were triaged ahead of us(!), but they kept an eye on her vitals and she is alive and well today because of the care she received.I saw many bereft pet parents come with pets and leave devastated after putting their beloved animal down - several treatment rooms were filled with crying families saying a final goodbye.We were fortunate to leave with our girl after receiving amazing care. But, in my 8 hours at the clinic, I watched many pet parents attempt to get shots or other non emergency care and yell at staff because they had waited hours. And then the foxtails. So many animals with embedded foxtails in their sinuses and eyes is a good reminder to keep our houses and parking strips clear.

Unfortunately we’ve had to bring Mac to PETS a few times for various issues. The staff has been consistently wonderful, from the front desk to the vet nurses to the doctors. Like any emergency department/urgent care, animals are triaged based on severity. Waiting sucks but it’s par for the course and means your pet is stable- something to be grateful for! We spent the afternoon/evening yesterday dealing with what turned out to be a foxtail lodged in his neck. Dr. Mamo and her team took excellent care of Mac. We were provided with a very fair, itemized estimate before anything was done. Hopefully we won’t need to come back any time soon, but we’re comforted knowing PETS is always open and available!

Avoid at all costs. They lie about wait times, eventually everyone peels off and goes to PESCM. My dog has been waiting with no other animals here, in respiratory distress for two hours and they havent had anyone at reception for the last hour. No new patients in the interim. Wont answer the phone. Rude and dont care about your pets whatsoever. Driving hours away to another clinic would still save you time and frustration.

I usually dont write reviews, but unfortunately my experience at the Berkeley Pet Referral Center was so frustrating I thought it was worth sharing. We brought our dog into the referral center in order to ascertain whether he needed emergency medical services after eating a package that may have contained macadamia nuts. After waiting 3 hours and spending 500 dollars, we were finally told our pet was absolutely fine and we could take him home. They were unable to induce vomiting with one injection and then gave our dog a second injection, which we did not authorize. After still not being able to induce vomiting, they instructed us to contact the ASPCA poison control line. After spending 45 minutes on the phone with poison control, and being told that our pet was probably not in any danger, the vet insisted on contacting poison control himself. We were then forced to wait another hour until the vet was able to speak with the toxicologist and receive the same information we had received an hour ago. Why the vet did not contact the poison control line initially, is beyond me. During all this we did not have the opportunity to speak with the vet, and only received brief updates from a nurse. If we had been able to speak with a vet initially, we could have made the decision to go home within the first hour. I understand that the staff was busy, but frankly i felt taken advantage of. It really felt as if they were holding our dog hostage in the backroom until they were able to squeeze every last penny from us. I do take some responsibility, as a I never should have brought my dog into the center, however, I expected some honesty from the staff as to whether the situation constituted an emergency in the first place.

I had a great experience at PETS Referral. The staff was kind, knowledgeable, and really seemed to care about my cat. She had an infected abscess from a fight and I took her in around 3:30pm. They had several other critical pet patients that day, so they couldnt see my cat until about 11pm, but they were apologetic and its understandable since my cats condition was stable. The cost was reasonable and they offered, but didnt push, additional costly procedures. Im very grateful since they gave her quality care at a fair price.

My wife brought our very shy, 8 year old yellow lab to PETS last weekend with intermittent, sudden, hind end collapse. They were so gentle and kind with her. She did need to return the next day for more tests and even went happily into the back with the technician. They were professional, thorough and compassionate. We appreciate their skill and will definitely go back to them should the need arise.

The staff at PETS Referral Center are absolutely amazing! They saved my babys life! My 12 year old pit/lab mix developed a large tumor that turned out to be malignant and I was literally watching it kill her until I took her to PETS Referral Center to be removed. Her surgery went smoothly, they kept me very up to date and well informed about the progression of how things were going throughout the time that she was in their care. We had a great experience with PETS, our dog hurt his back and was unable to be seen right away by our regular vet and we were referred to PETS. The staff was very kind and helpful. The vet tech was great with our dog and very clear about costs and how long it would take for our dog to be seen since he was stable. The vet was able to see him sooner than expected and called me with a very logical treatment plan. I liked her approach to rule one thing out at a time, rather than running every test under the sun. Im hoping we dont need to come back, but if we do, well be coming to PETS.

This emergency clinic saved my little dachshund after sand impaction, which almost cost his life with a sudden drop of body temperature, extreme dehydration over 4hrs. He was the sickest among all the hospitalized pets. We had a great experience here. Our kitty was sick with a facial abscess and other vets could not see her for weeks. They were able to see her within a few hours and perform the minor surgery she needed to heal the infection later that day. She recovered so quick. Staff were professional, caring, and courteous. I took my dog, Lucy, there for diarrhea and dehydration. I thought that the care and service was exceptional.Lucy spent 3 nights there. I got a call from the vet on call each shift. The staff was easy to contact, cordial and very helpful. As a physician, I can understand and appreciate the thorough workup they did. Understanding that there is a shortage of vets affecting the volume of people accessing PETS referral center, it would have been better if someone had told me one, two even three hours into waiting we probably wont see you today because we have determined that your pets condition isnt critical. I dont think staff was super honest with me. I waited five hours to get seen by a vet and finally went home. Turns out theres only one vet there at any given time. You could have been more up front earlier on. My cat sat in her carrying case for all that time.

I have been here twice and have mixed feelings. I do appreciate that this place lets you sign in and come back when its your turn vs. sitting in the car with your pet for hours. My first experience with PETS was just perfect - both office staff and vet. So much so that when I needed to bring my boy in to check on a limp he had developed, I didnt hesitate. Same great staff checked me in around 11:30am. I didnt get a call to go back until about 10pm, which I knew could happen, but people answered the phone all day/night when I would call to check and were always friendly and helpful. I do appreciate they have two cues and we were in the non-emergency cue. After being put in a room with our dog, the nurse came and took Ty away without us talking to the vet first. The nurse came back saying Ty needed a pain blocker because he was biting. When the vet did come in, she said she couldnt check much because he was so tense. Well of course he was tense, he was frightened. She gave me an estimate of $520 which included x-rays. I told her I didnt want the medication, which should have knocked off $60, but when I got the bill, it was $560. When I questioned it at the desk, they just said the vet wasnt regular and didnt know the prices - no apology, just matter of fact which was super frustrating - why bother giving an estimate. So the night vet was not staff, seemed very inexperienced, had a horrible bedside manner and really couldnt answer my basic questions and kind of just blew them off. For example, when the vet recommended I contact an orthopedic surgeon in a week if my dog wasnt walking and I asked if they had a list of surgeons, she actually rolled her eyes and told me to Google it. I did get a follow up message from PETS giving me accurate information and telling me who to call should my boy not get better. He didnt get better and I am torn what to do next. My experience was day and night - literally!

Best vet experience Ive ever had. The service was so outstanding. I felt like my baby was in good hands the whole time, and the doctor who treated him gave extremely helpful feedback and explained all of the procedures in lay terms. She was also very contentious about my budget and had no problem recommending me a course of action that honored where I was at financially. I never felt like I was being up-sold services like what you can encounter at a lot of vets. Ive been here several times. Once was a simple foreign body extraction from my dogs mouth, all they charged me was the emergency fee! (awesome!) 2 other times were for end of life treatment. My little guy was run over by a car, and DOA. The staff were very understanding, let me visit with him privately, and only charged me for the cremation. The most recent was to put my first dog to sleep. I was asked to give them a 20-30 minute advance notice to when I would bring him to be euthanized, and they immediately escorted us into a private room for the procedure. I was not inundated with questions and they understood that this decision didnt come lightly. They also were considerate enough to let me pay the bill in the private room so that I could simply leave quickly and grieve privately. When I arrived home the other day I received condolence cards for each pet I lost. Handwritten sympathy cards. That really shows they care when you go the extra mile like that. Overall good experience but my partner ended up waiting in the car (as instructed) for over an hour while several people just walked in with their animals. When they called to check in the employee was extremely rude, and they couldnt get any update, either! Fantastic pet care! Weve been here three times for various issues including one severe allergic reaction which took 3 days to resolve enough that we could bring our dog home. During this time, we met many of the staff and they all worked together on our dogs case, so transitions between vets was smooth. Additionally, the vet staff was fantastic at communicating with us in person and over the phone, took ample time to answer all of our questions, laid out clearly what our treatment options were at each step, and were open about what aspects of our their diagnoses they were more or less certain about. This ER service can be victim of its own success (its quite busy) but the experience is great if you are a little prepare (tips at the bottom of the review).While I was waiting on my last visit, I saw many situations that are difficult to handle:- A sick dog had a pretty massive accident in the reception area. It was cleaned very quickly.- A customer was very frustrated by the cost of the medicine she needed. The staff remained friendly and did their best to help even though they were being talked down inappropriately.- A pet owner came to visit their dog who was on their way out. They were understandably very emotional and the staff was really nice and attentive to them the entire time.I especially remember one of the front desk attendants (with brightly colored hair) for her incredible service. I cant think of anything to complain about!Now, a few tips:- Its impossible to know how long you will have to wait.- Sometimes, you will be triaged rather quickly, then given the choice to go home and wait for a call to return.- Sometimes, you will wait several hours to be triaged, then be seen very shortly after.Because there are many factors at play, be ready to wait by bringing anything you need for work or to pass the time. The waiting room has power to plug a phone or a laptop, and its overall fairly quiet.

Had a interesting experience here. My little dog suffered a fall on his neck and was instantly paralyzed. I rushed him to the hospital and they immediately took him in. When you go in, they require a deposit of $600.WHAT BOTHERED ME:-They wanted to charge me 1K to keep him overnight.-They insisted his recovery would be unlikely and that if I couldn’t afford a very expensive surgery I should euthanize my dog!!Fast forward a week, my baby is walking again and is recovering little by little from rest. He was in a lot of neck pain the first four days, but now doesn’t even need his pain medicine! I am taking him to a Hollisitic vet rehab center in Oakland to help him recover.BOTTOM LINE: Don’t feel pressured into euthanizing your pet!! If I wouldn’t have insisted of taking him home myself, maybe my baby wouldn’t have been given the chance to recover. Trust your gut and don’t be manipulated by the financial cost to let your baby go.They really made me think my baby would never recover, but a week later his is doing SO much better! That was one of the darkest nights of my life but I am glad to have my baby still by my side 💛💛💛I am giving 3 stars because they did see him right away and the receptionist was super kind, comforting and professional (I wish I got his name).

We received amazing care from the staff and doctors. Our cat stopped eating and was getting very lethargic. We took him to his normal vet and they couldnt figure out what was going on. So we took him to PETS Referral Center in Berkeley to get an ultrasound. After several more tests he ended up having pancreatitis. He requires 24 hour care and ended up having to stay in the hospital for several days. I wont sugar coat it. It was very, very expensive and we sadly didnt have pet insurance. But it was ultimately a great outcome. Our cat recovered thanks to the care he received and he is home now and on the mend.

Do NOT bring your pet here, no matter the emergency. The clinicians do not communicate between each other, and one will tell you one thing at a particular price point, then the tech will deny and create an entirely different price despite the doctor ensuring ease of treatment. Our experience included them completing 2k of diagnostic treatment (for a diarrhea diagnosis) shaved our dog, and sent them home with 2 days of meds (despite the appropriate treatment being 10 days). The cherry on top is a very rude Tech named Melonie trying to charge us hundreds of dollars to be “reevaluated” for the SAME diagnosis, reporting that there’s no way to verify what the doctor initially told us about the refill of meds because Dr. Sagy (and other doctors) in their clinic are “rotating in and out.”

My rabbit stopped eating one morning. After calling many vets Pets Referral Center said I could come right over. They took him right away and they started monitoring him. He seemed to be getting better and then the bun suddenly passed, perhaps due to GI stasis. The vet and veterinary staff could not have been kinder and more empathetic. They gave him immediate and ongoing care, gave me clear information and options and when he passed were so sensitive to my overwhelming emotions.This is an emergency vet, so if you are going here expect to have a serious wait as they have to prioritize emergencies (like the one I had). Absolutely incompetent staff. I would not trust them with a toy dog, let alone my real dog. Here is what happened today:10AM: I called and told them that my dog is in pain. They told me to fill out the online form and bring him in ASAP. I filled out and submitted the form right away.10:22AM: I arrived at their place and called them to let them know I am here. I was told that a nurse will be out to pick up my dog. At the same time, I received a text confirming that the form I had filled out has been received.10:50AM: I was still waiting for a nurse to come pick up my dog. I called them and the representative, without checking, said that the nurses are working their way down the list.11:30AM: I am still waiting for someone to come pick up my dog who was in a lot of pain. I walked up to the front, rang the doorbell, and spoke to someone who came to the door. They said that they somehow missed the fact that I had arrived and were apologetic. However, she still told me that the wait would be long and suggested that I take my dog somewhere else. She even offered to give me a list of vets around.11:45AM: I am still sitting in my car in from of PETS Referral and calling other emergency vets. The same lady comes up to my car and tells me that they are now ready to see my dog. So I made the mistake to trust them after what had happened and gave my dog to them.12:27PM: I receive a call from their doctor. She goes over what needs to be done, and tells me that someone will be in touch with an estimate.12:51PM: They call back with the estimate, and after discussing with the doctor, I asked to remove some unnecessary items. The doctor tells me that since my dog is in pain, she will attend to him and give him medication for the pain after the call...at 12:59PM (after my dog and I have been waiting for over two and a half hours).2:35PM: My girlfriend is waiting by the place on-call in case they need us there. I call them to see how my dog is doing. AND THEY TELL ME THAT MY DOG HAS NOT BEEN EVALUATED BY THE DOCTOR YET. HE IS JUST SITTING THERE... IN PAIN. They said that another pet came in that had breathing issues and so the doctor attended to that dog first. I totally understand the fact that the other pet needed more urgent care. But after how they messed up with the schedule in the morning and made us wait for long times due to their mistake, they still thought it is okay to not let us know that we need to wait there for hours longer after the doctor told me that she will get to my dog after the phone call. When I complained, the nurse on the phone said that there is no trust anymore and we should pick up our dog. The day was gone, and they did absolutely nothing but to waste my time.If you go there, you are likely to be faced with business people who will willingly lie to you to get you there without telling you about long wait times. Once you are there, they know that it will take you much longer to go and start fresh by waiting somewhere else. Every other place I called warned me about their wait times. Had I taken my dog to another (honest) place first, my dog would have gone through much less discomfort and pain. My experience has led me to believe that the staff at PETS Referral (on that day) are careless, heartless, immoral, and liars.

Two weeks ago we noticed a mass/swelling on our cat Phils tail that was very painful to the touch. We were pretty sure it was an infected abscess that needed to be drained. Regular vets are very backlogged right now because of COVID. We couldnt wait so we took him to PETS, which was recommended by a couple vets and some social media discussion I found.PETS was fast and efficient. The phone staff were very responsible and helpful. The vet examined him within 2 hours (emergencies understandably took priority) and called to explain the plan and ask permission for sedation. Everything went well -- they shaved the hair around the wound, drained it, and set us up with a treatment plan, e-collar, and painkillers to make it easier for him to tolerate warm compresses. The costs were all explained up front and the price was quite reasonable given that its an emergency vet.Two weeks later, Phil is almost completely healed. Many thanks to Dr. Nario and Nurse T for taking such good care of him! I hope there wont be any future emergencies but I know where to go now if needed.

Even though you only go to the pet ER when things arent going well (which is an inherently unpleasant experience), I and my pets have only been treated really well here. The staff is really nice, both on the phone and in person, and are sensitive too the fact you sometimes have to make hard decisions about your pet. They can be a tad impatient when you ask lots of questions, but they are an ER and they do have lots of patients in the queue so I totally understand that. They answer my numerous questions and provide helpful info. They are somewhat expensive but not exorbitantly so (and again, they do provide emergency care). On cost, the thing I appreciate is that they outline options for you and are understanding that cost is a consideration. Ive called for follow-up care questions and they are good about giving guidance.

My dog (a large German shepherd mix) had an ear infection that took a turn for the worse at the beginning of the weekend when I wasnt able to schedule an appointment with his usual vet. Because he was in serious distress, I decided to take him to PETS Referral Center. The staff was very communicative and let me know when he could be seen, given the triage situation, which was in the afternoon, maybe 4 or 5 hours after I initially reached out. In the end, sedation was required, which increased the costs considerably, but I think it was just the price of doing business (emergency rooms arent cheap). The costs were explained in advance before treatment was given so I had a chance to opt out but decided in the end to bite the bullet and go for it since leaving my poor dog in misery wasnt a viable option.

Our dog needed immediate attention because of sudden bloat after eating his dinner too quickly as usual. His stomach twisted, which caused immediate distress and could have been fatal. Several vet hospitals we called said the wait could be hours, but PETS Referral Center said they could see our dog quickly. Unfortunately I had a bad experience with this place, I had to rush to the vet because my dog got very sick out of nowhere. I wish I had read more reviews or asked my friends sooner as all of them share horrible stories of this place. They charge an insane amount just to see your dog, then they said if my dog didn’t receive over night care (costing 1K) and possibly a very expensive surgery he would die. When I shared I couldn’t afford all that the women working was cruel, she told me I obviously don’t care if my dog dies since I couldn’t pay the full amount. Originly called a different hospital who said they had a 2 to 3 hour waiting time. They recommended I try somewhere else. I filled out a registration form online with Pets Referral. It was fast and easy and I could upload pics.We waited about 1.5 hours before they could see my pet. We waited 2 hours to hear from the doctor who seemed very helpful. We waited 3.5 more hours until he was ready for pickup. Why didnt these jerks tell me that it would take 7 hours? Probably because they wanted the ability to overcharge me.They charged me $60 for an ace bandage. Some of the other charges seemed pretty extreme. Why did they charge me for morphine and a sedative? Very expensive to deal with a broken toe nail. Over $600.I will not return. They completely failed to communicate from start to finish. Communication is easy if you do it. They didnt. We took a fresh fecal sample in to be tested since we obviously wanted to make sure that if she had a bacterial infection that we got the correct treatment. After waiting over an hour for the doctor (who did not realize we had submitted our own fecal sample to the technician and was about to invasively extract more - probably a first sign that these guys were disorganized), we were sent home with some medicines and told to wait for the results. I checked back in after 2 days, 3 days, 5 days, 1 week and finally after escalating the matter was told the sample was never submitted for testing in the first place. At a critical care center like this, this is negligent at best, so unprofessional, and my dog has continued to suffer. We will not be coming back here.

I really appreciate the services of the vet--especially since they were so last minute, and on a Sunday; however, I feel that the receptionists were not personable at all and they only felt inclined to acknowledge me or interact w/ me when it came to $$. Even when it was time for me to pay, she took my card from a slit in the door and barely interacted w/ about my bill. Mel (vet tech with no bedside manner) told me that my dog who’s lost 15% of her body weight in less than a week, isn’t eating, is vomiting, is collapsing, and has bloody diarrhea is not sick enough for them to treat as an urgent patient. When I tried asking Mel any type of follow up question, I was rudely dismissed. So much so that afterwards, another pet owner sitting next to me said he thought Mel was being ridiculous as well.

From the initial experience when a technician came to my car to get my cat to the phone call with the veterinarian, to the final encounter with the same technician when my cat was done, I had a very positive experience. I received some sad yet also hopeful news from the optometrist who explained everything very clearly and even shared about her own cat who had to have the same procedure done. Im writing specifically of our experiences with Mary, Anyi, and Dr. Siedlecki in the oncology practice, from June 2020-October 2021. The three of them were incredible. Their support and kindness to us -- as owners going through the horrible experience of knowing the best we could hope for was a little more time -- and their love and care for our feisty girl, Roxie, was so appreciated. I actually looked forward to Roxies appointments because they understood that Roxie wasnt just a patient; she was our world. We felt supported and listened to. They made Pets a safe space for us to be single-mindedly obsessed with our cats wellbeing during a time when, globally, there were a lot of big/bigger things happening. This is the first time that it takes more time to be seen by a vet than a doctor at a hospital in the Bay Area! We brought in Scratchy because he was limping this morning and after 5 hours + we get a call from the doctor saying she couldn’t make a full assessment because our cat was agitated. No surprise, my poor cat has been waiting for hours at the clinic in an foreign place without us present (due to COVID-19 restrictions). So essentially, she did not complete the exam (but we are charged the full visit examination fee) and told us we would need > 1000$ for bloodwork and X-rays on account that she could not physically examine him. This is OUTRAGEOUS, worst vet ever! I had to call multiple time to see where he was in the cue and after being told he would be seen next which still resulted in a further 1 1/2 hour supplemental wait time. I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND unless you have absolutely no choice.

I wish I had words or means to quantify what the doctors and nurses at PETS referral center did for me and my family. My dog, Maggie, was tragically hit by a reckless driver yesterday - we thought we had lost her. We immediately called PETS during transport, and due to the acuity of her injuries we were told that she would be seen immediately. When we arrived, she was immediately triaged and evaluated by the team of doctors and nurses. While we waited in the parking lot (due to COVID restrictions), the ER vet Dr. Lee warmly called us and gave us her impression. It was recommended that our dog undergo an amputation the same day with Dr. Moser- who was incredibly professional, knowledgeable and reassuring. We called our own vet to see if he had any thoughts about the amputation and his statement was I fully trust the recommendations of the doctors at PETS. And so we did...our Maggie survived this tragic accident with nothing but a damaged leg, thanks to your team. My dog is not a pet...she is my family. She has provided so much comfort and healing - she rescued me. Knowing that PETS took care of her during the worst day of our lives is more than we could have ever asked for. I waited in their parking lot for over 2 hours. My dog was sneezing and drooling and I was worried he inhaled a fox tail. When we arrived they told us it would be quick as there was only 1 pet ahead of us. Great! After 45 minutes we called they said they are sorry for the miscommunication and there was actually 4 pets ahead of us and it would be about an hour. We were upset but chalked it up to a miscommunication and waited. Two hours and 15 minutes into waiting we called and they again apologized for the miscommunication but it would minimally be 3 hours before our dog would be seen by the doctor?! What?! I can not say enough about Dr. Cecile Siedlecki and her team! Our French Bulldog Georgia was diagnosed with lymphoma while we were travelling away from home. It was not an option for us to return home right away to seek treatment. Dr Cecile agreed to see Georgia and start treatment on very short notice (hours). Her care gave us the time to get Georgia home to continue her treatment. I credit Dr. Cecile and her team on the positive outcome we are experiencing. I brought my cat here after she had a seizure and a local vet hospital said they were too busy and recommended this place. We called ahead and they advised us to bring our cat now. We sat in the car after we checked in for three hours until anyone came out to take our cat inside. My cat was weak, lying in my arms and panting the whole time. My partner called them a couple of times letting them know she was not looking well and needed attention. Finally, brought her in. Another hour passed and no update. We had to call and ask what was going on. The staff said the doctor would call us. Another hour later, the doctor called saying she should have some testing and an IV started. THEY HADNT DONE ANYTHING YET IN 5 HOURS!!! The doctor said the staff would call to give the estimate. Another 40 minutes and they would not start any treatment before this encounter was completed. We gave consent of course and were told to go home and doctor would call with results. Doctor called saying fluid seen in abdomen c/w cancer and hyperthyroidism had affected organs and tried to get us to consent to euthenizing. Doctor called three more times trying to get same consent. My partner went to get our cat out of there at 2 am after the last call. Next morning, he called and asked for copies of results and notes from doctor. Radiology report stated cat had air in her abdomen, most likely from the panting. We had to sit in the car for 3 hours waiting. Cat was dehydrated. No treatment after her acute seizure for 6 hours. Bill came close to $2000.00 for their assistance in killing my cat. Let me say this. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS HOSPITAL!!!! They are incompetent, greedy, uncaring, unprofessional and will deny treatment until you accept the estimate that takes them hours to come up with. This is a barbaric establishment with zero concern for animals. If they cared AT ALL, my girl would still be alive. She finally died a couple of days later. If you want treatment right away, go somewhere else. They neglected to take any action to care for my cat for several hours leading to her decline; the doctor was incompetent reporting findings that were COMPLETELY INACCURATE!! If the incompetent doctor would have taken action a few hours earlier, my baby girl would be with me now.

The staff here are wonderful and extremely helpful. You can really tell they care about helping you and your pet. I brought in a female rabbit that I had just taken in. She was abandoned and came with a male. I came home to find she had plucked all her fur and was bleeding from her genitals. They dont specialize in rabbits, not many places do, but they took her in and were able to find out she was pregnant but she was having complications. The vet was able to get in touch with a vet contact of mine and took her advice and helped saved my little Tonks. They got her through the night so that I could bring her to specialist the next day. She survived the surgery and is now doing well. I like to thank Pets Referral for being professional and doing what they could to help out.

I have been here 3xs. The first two times were great, but the third time was not at all. I understand it is an emergency vet and animals are not seen in order. But, after waiting six hours I noticed a lot. People had the option to be called to go in instead of waiting in the lobby. I was not given that option. I was given the option to see my vet basically. But, making an appointment to the vet is like making a dmv appt and my dog keeps me up every night with his issue and it wont stop growing. I needed my dog seen. I was being ignored. No one told me they could not help me at all. If they could not help me at all, I would have left and found someone else instead of waiting for six hours. I was just in the lobby while everyone else came and went. I was willing to wait longer, but acknowledge people after awhile. Ask if the animal needs water, etc. I was upset I was not given the options for a call or an internal medicine appt. at least. Something. Anything. The young lady in the front was great. She handled herself well in such a stressful situation. I apologize for raising my voice at her like that. She did not deserve that at all. The gentleman in the front was nice too. I would have done the same as he did. I apologize to him too. I just wanted to be treated like everyone else. I saw other employees hide and listen and watch instead of coming out and at least try to help the situation. Never let anything go that far with clients, always help your coworkers. Talk to your clients. I was not treated like everyone else and that was what upset me. Treat everyone the same. It is a great place to go to, but I will not be going there anymore. Thank you for the first two visits. But, this third one, I have never gone through that at any hospital. Not that. Cant deny the great care that is offered though. Thanks.

It took 5 round trips from Richmond to Berkeley to drop off & pick up my pet. My cat needed an ultrasound and there was too much miscommunication between the radiologist and the front desk. I was overcharged for services and a massive delay to get my pet back. I was on the phone standing right outside the lobby for over 30 minutes for a pick up. The employees saw me waiting, knew I was on hold and continued to ignore me. It took a technician walking out to help another person for me to get help. There is no appointment service so everything is first come, first serve basis. I was there and everyone who would ring the doorbell was attended to before me. Between the 5 unnecessary trips to this location, being overcharged for services, and having an extended wait time for a pick up.....I have no faith for this place

Our older cat has been in and out of PETS several times in the last two months, and every time we have been treated extremely well by all of the staff. They discuss all options and issues with us before taking any action; they explain things thoroughly and compassionately; and they take very good care of the animals which are currently hospitalized. At this point weve worked several times with two of the doctors, Dr. MacAllister, and Dr. Sonnenshein, and both of them have been just remarkably helpful and kind. Weve also gotten to know several members of the staff quite well, and their genuine concern for and care for our cat has been so reassuring when weve had to leave him there.I certainly cant say its cheap (what vet is, really?), and it can get quite busy, as they do take emergency walk-ins, but in terms of care and follow-up, I think theyre really excellent.

Our beloved, 18-yr old cat was suddenly having trouble breathing on a Saturday morning, and our regular vet couldnt fit him in for days. Im very glad PETS Referral could see him. The online intake expedites the process, and our cat was soon triaged & put in an oxygen tent for his comfort. Dr. Barlia spoke to us and understood & respected our wish to save an elderly pet from invasive, painful, or drawn out procedures. It was his time to go, and we wanted our cat home with us. Dr. Barlia helped us contact a pet hospice program and later that day, our sweetie passed very gently, in our arms. My cat died at PETS in June 2020, and I believe it was due to their negligence. On Day 1, after initial exam at 10:45am revealed painful fluids in her abdomen and likely blockage, a tube to empty her by then full stomach wasnt placed until mid-afternoon. She vomited a large volume of acidic fluid and aspirated some into her lungs, giving her pneumonia and ultimately killing her.I understand keeping her in an oxygen cabinet while treating pneumonia, but her blood O2 % only increased while she was in it; taking her out always resulted in it dropping. On the afternoon of Day 3, blood and radiology results indicated serious worsening. She was kept for that third night; I was allowed to visit, but was required to notify if I wanted a DNR in place. She was struggling to breathe, and the next morning I was called at 8:15 to agree to euthanize. I was advised to get there quickly, as death could occur shortly.I believe it was negligent on PETS part to have made her suffer overnight after the poor test results and the condition I saw her in. I believe it was their responsibility to have brought this up that afternoon, given the test results and required DNR decision.My total bill is just under $10,000. When I arrived for euthanization, I was required to sign off on the procedure (understood) but was also asked for immediate payment, when they already had me on the hook for ~$8k. My cat was suffering terribly, and they wanted payment first. I demanded to be with her and they did it, but their focus on money over everything else made a heartbreaking situation that much worse.

I was referred here when my dog was found to have both a mammary tumor and a lung nodule by another vet through X-ray. They did an ultrasound, then referred me elsewhere for a CT scan. Dr Siedlecki struck me as caring, knowledgeable and compassionate. She, as well as the doctor at Oakvet, gave me the impression that my dogs lung nodule was most likely metastatic cancer, with a probable survival rate of one to three months. She did say that the CT scan was not a diagnosis, and if a later X-ray showed no change, this would call into question the apparent prognosis. The overall tone of the message, though, was pessimistic. I was devastated. Follow up X-rays months later have shown the lung nodule has not changed, and the mammary tumor was the least aggressive type of cancer. I don’t share this to discredit her in any way. I’m sure she was following correct protocol, and I’m sure she would be happy to hear that my dog is still running along the beach, flirting with other dogs and fixated by cats and squirrels. I do want to say though that experts can make mistakes. The doctor at Oakvet also gave a dire perspective on my dogs prognosis, and he struck me as equally caring and competent. Other vets later, however, pointed out that the radiology report was entirely inconclusive. I only want to convey that it is always best to seek out another opinion—no one, however experienced and competent, is in a position to know.

It got worse and I had to rush him here on New Years Day.The I take and process especially during covid was very smooth. You fill out an online form and once you arrive you call them and they come out to get your pet.After a few minutes (as you wait outside), the vet will call and speak with you and give you the run down, the staff will then call you back with the financial estimate. When they told me it would be $4000, I immediately gasped because this is my baby but where can I find this money especially being out of work since covid struck?! Keep in mind no treatment is rendered until estimates are paid in full.The staff immediately mentioned “CareCredit”, I -applied and we were approved within minutes, thank you Jesus and St. Francis of Assisi🙏🏻 (Patron Saint of Animals).I’m grateful for everything but I’m confused after two days of still not knowing what’s wrong, 24/7 oxygen dependence with wheezing why my baby wasn’t treated more aggressive with bronchial or asthmatic treatments. Instead, I was told he would benefit being seen by and Internal Medicine Specialist, this is a hospital, and there isn’t one on staff??? Next step? Transfer to a facility that has one, in this case BAVS in San Leandro.The transfer was smooth and the Pets Referral Center let us borrow a mobile oxygen chamber to take our baby to the new hospital. If there’s one thing that I can do to offer you or someone in this predicament, choose an ER that comes staffed with specialists! I could have save d a time, shiny for My baby and extra costs not to mention stress.Thankfully after two days our little one was off of oxygen and ready to come home with a fairly new diagnose, sort of. We still were waiting on a lung worm test result. We later received results and a followup app turns out our boy is suffering fromAsthmatic Symptoms! Here comes another bill but I don’t care the second facility was superb and the internal medicine doctor there finally gave us hope and answers!I’m not complaining about a thing again I’m grateful, but if I knew better and had to choose again, I’d go with a Pets ER that’s complete with Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedic etc.And yes we’ve reinstated our pet insurance. Killed my hamster....Called ahead to find out if they had a vet that could see hamsters, they said yes, so we drove 20 mins to get there because its the only place within two hours that would take them. Once we got there they made us wait 5 whole hours without my pets being seen. Tried to ask if we could put them in a bigger cage or bin because being in a small travel case is very stressful for hamsters and stress can kill them. 5 hours in, we get in a room and the vet tells us she doesnt know much about hamsters, but says giving them fluid would help even though she didnt even check if they were dehydrated. She was acting almost fine before she took them back. She took them back and 30 mins later they came out. Our baby cream was almost unresponsive. The nurse couldnt be bothered to check with the vet to see if it was normal. The ride home our cream was still unresponsive. Even putting her back in her cage she seemed to only get worse. The next morning she was still the same and we took her to a vet that actually knew about hamsters. He said there was nothing we could do at this point. She died a few hours later... He says the stress from being forced in a travel cage for the 5 hours they made us wait is what killed her. She died because of this places lack of care. The whole experience, between the lack of communication, lack of knowledge, and unwillingness to help or prioritize them all because they are hamsters are insane. My cream would still be here today if on the phone they had just told the truth. I pray her sister doesnt die of grief due to her sister dying because of this places incompetence. That night we talked to over 6 different people with pets while waiting, we were not the only ones unhappy with this place. One mans cat had been taken in the back for a new splint and stayed in the back, not giving the man updates even when he asked for 6 hours. 2 different people came back in, one whos dog was just in the er, and got worse after their treatment (to which they made her wait again) and a mans dog who had surgery there a few days before and her stitches had broken and she was bleeding out. Save your trip, your time, your money, and your pets life and PLEASE go somewhere else. Id be fine with the wait and the 300 dollars if they had cared and actually tried to save my baby girl....

This emergency vet is really hit or miss depending on what vet you get. I’ve had to bring my dog to the veterinarian for many acute problems over the years, and on top of my sister being a vet, I can tell when a vet is trying their best and when they are trying to run up the bill. Previous visits I felt like my dog received excellent care here. On this most recent visit, the veterinarian was clearly trying to run up the bill. We waited for over 3 hours to be seen by the vet, so clearly they didn’t think she was an urgent case. Not one update in the 3 hours on how long it would take to be seen. My dog had diarrhea the previous day and now had been vomiting. Over the course of the 3 hours of waiting my dog actually got much better. In the exam the vet was super rushed and didn’t clearly explain what she thought was the best path forward to figuring out what was making my dog throw up. She listed a bunch of things to do in no particular order and rushed out the door saying that the tech would bring back the estimate for x-rays. I did confirm with her that it wasn’t likely that my dog had bloat (a serious issue that would have required to be seen immediately, not 3 hours later) or a hard foreign object in her throat or intestines, but an x-ray would rule it out. The vet tech comes back with the estimate for x-rays which was over $1,000. I’ve spent a lot of money on my dog for surgeries and emergency vet care, so the bill itself didn’t seem unreasonable but the x-rays would not logically help my dog get better-especially if it was a bacteria or a virus making my dog sick. When I asked the vet tech to clarify what the x-rays would be useful in finding, he told me it was in case she had bloat or ingested something. I told him we ruled out both with the vet (and I had been home with her all week and knew she didn’t ingest a toy or hard object), then he said oh well in case she got into foxtail. While fox tail from the park was a possibility, she would have reacted immediately to foxtail and an X-ray would be useless, you’d need an ultrasound to be able to see a foxtail. We had to send the vet tech back several times to talk to the veterinarian to clarify the very confusing “treatment plan,” while the vet refused to come talk to us. The vet tech seemed pushy over the x-rays. It all seemed like a sales pitch that lacked any logical process to determine what was making my dog sick. And if it was important for my dog to get x-rays, I would have thought the vet would come back in a explain why she thinks my dog needs them. It was impossible for the vet tech to explain to me if we could do any tests to see if it’s a bacteria or virus making my dog sick eventually he conceded that I would need to bring my dog to the regular vet for that.My dog has been fine since and I’m glad I didn’t go with the unnecessary x-rays that the vet pushed for, but couldn’t explain why it would help in this situation. While there are other great vets at this hospital I am going to stop going here. That was the worst care I’ve ever seen- the vet can’t explain why the dog would need expensive x-rays and refused to come back in and talk to us, but rather sends her sales associate of a technician. No thanks.

My dog couldn’t stop vomiting on Christmas morning, and got horribly dehydrated. She has a complex blood disease so treatment is complicated. They were totally responsive and careful. They are genuine vet detectives, doing blood tests (all normal), full body x Ray (all ok), and getting fluids and anti emetic in her. The next day they had an ultrasound that found a foreign object lodged at the end of her stomach. Within two hours, they had a medical specialist skilled in endoscopy come in to remove it thru esophagus. I got to take her home a few hours later. It was a horrible 36 hours for me, fearing the worse. The next step would have been surgery. Instead, they solved it with a non invasive procedure. No amount of money would be too much for the skill and service and care my little Misty got.

We had to bring our dog to PETS due to an emergency, never a pleasant situation. The entire staff was very helpful and friendly. When the doc came back with the horrible diagnosis, which lead to our decision to have our beloved dog put down, PETS and especially Dr. Kathy Lee went above and beyond to accomodate us in a very sensible manner. They brought us to a room with soft light to say goodbye to our dog, let us sit with her as long as we wanted, and then stayed with us until the end. Our dog just peacefully fell asleep and passed away, with us around her. This experience is the toughest thing one has to go through, put Dr. Lee made it so much easier and actually always gave us the feeling that there was no rush, we had all the time we wanted. A very rare experience with any vet we have visited. Dr. Lee rocks.

This place doesn’t have the heart to care for lost animals. I found a really sweet dog at a Target Parking Lot so I called in before hand to see if I can bring her in. Following their protocol, I called Animal Control after but they were closed. They said that if Animal Control was not able to pick up the phone or unable to pick up the dog I can bring her in. When I came in they wouldn’t take her! I understand they couldn’t take her because she was not from the city of Berkeley or injured BUT I asked if they can at least check her microchip so that I can house her for the night and return her to the owner. They DID have the ability to atleast microchip her and refused. They didn’t even let us through the door. They had no interest in helping us help her which is awful service. We ended up taking her Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital 8 minutes away. They were also shocked to hear they wouldn’t atleast check her microchip. Finding out she was registered. Berkeley Dog and Cat hospitable was able to hold her for the owner. Pet Emergency Referral Center wouldn’t have done that. PLEASE TAKE YOUR BUISNESS ELSEWHERE.

My dog Zed had Osteosarcoma and had to have his leg amputated. It was very difficult for me to hear the diagnosis but Dr. Shaffer was thorough in her explanations. She followed up on our phone conversation explaining Zeds condition, prognosis and treatment options with it in writing with just as much detail, if not more, than our phone dialogue. I have never met her in person because of Covid regulations, but her communication made me feel confident that he was in good hands with her as his Dr.Zeds surgeon (Dr. Moser) was also very thorough in explaining the surgical process and patiently answered my questions and addressed some of my concerns (mostly nerves on my part). He also followed up on our phone conversation with written information in detail with medication instructions and release notes.This is a busy hospital but every one of the vet techs were kind and helpful and never made me feel as if they were too busy to answer questions or help.The costs werent cheap but the care was stellar. I would highly recommend PETS referral center.

It depends on who you get as a vet. I brought an elderly stray in who Ive been taking care of for a year and he had to be sedated for a blood test. Although I told the vet it was gut pain they never checked him out. They said they would give fluids but didnt. Here, the price was ridiculous, my cat seemed traumatized, they did a lousy job on his staples. I loved that crew! Third time, the technician that came out was very short with me and not very pleasant. I asked him if he was having a bad day or something. He told me he doesnt show emotion so he wont get attached. Ummmm.... ok. But you work somewhere where people are upset and worried. Im not an animal Im a person. You can show me compassion! You think I want to be at the ER with my baby!!!! Today..... not so good! My dog has been really dizzy, with a swollen abdomin, and blood in her stool. So I take her to the hospital as directed by my doctor. I get there. I told them I only have about 45 min before I have to go to work. They took her back and then came to tell me there isnt enough time for them to write up an estimate. But they did want to run some blood work. I said ok can I just leave her here for 4 hours while I go to work? Nope! They said without the estimate they dont know how much it will be and I have to pay first. I said but she is really sick and now I have to go to work. I dont have time to take her home. Nothing they can do. So now my dog is sitting in the car unable to hold her bowls because payment is more important than my dogs care. I get you need your money but to turn away a very sick animal because of payment is just really sad to me. Ive been there 3 times and always paid. I wouldnt have my dog at the ER if I wasnt willing to do whatever to save her. I mean humans get treatment before having to pay but our animals have to pay first? I just dont get it. Very upsetting experience today. I was already crying all day thinking Im about to lose my baby and then I get turned away because estimate wont be done in time for me to pay the bill.

Paid quite a bit of money for a potential foxtail wound where they couldn’t find the foxtail after some excavation and it ended up working its way out of another spot in my dogs paw weeks later. Called for follow ups as she was limping during this time and didn’t get much help other than being told to go elsewhere...would expect them to want to make sure the work they did actually helped her. Me and my girlfriend came in with our dog Rocky who happened to have gotten into some bad cookies. Theyre staff is great especially Janice at the front desk. My neighbors and I managed to rescue a little stray pup in our area of Oakland. I was going to bring it home for the night and then take it to the SPCA in the morning. My dog had an emergency and I took her here the medical service was great and they did a good job taking care of her but the receptionist chelsie is rude, disrespectful, and definitely not the face you would want to represent your business and help upset owners going through a stressful time
