Our TPA firm has worked with PenChecks for many years now, and we have always found them to be very responsive and customer service oriented. We recently needed assistance in obtaining an old tax document for a new retirement plan client, and were very happy with the excellent service we received. This was a time sensitive matter and Diego Mendez was extremely helpful in coordinating the request for us.

Honestly up until my call today my experience has been terrible. Not getting back to any of my emails giving me little if any info when I call. Then I spoke to Jessie who was absolutely perfect. I asked for a check of an old 401k and I never got it. Mind you Ive never had anything lost in the mail at my current address.So of course they want to charge me to have them send me another one. And I will be charged again if there are more problems.All on top of whatever they charged me to hold it and to hand it over. It all seems pretty scammy. Im curious how my people have had a similar experience?Could this be a legal matter?

I have no idea how they have 4 stars. They provide minimum communication, are not transparent and flat out take your money. My former employer transferred my money to them without prior notice. When I got the letter informing me of the change, there was nothing telling me they were going to charge me fees until I moved my money elsewhere. Nor was I informed theyd taken a $30 fee off the top. So theyve now taken more than half my money and it takes them weeks to respond to an email, which means they made sure to get more fees while I waited for an answer on why my balance had dropped so much since they took over.

I had called today to find where my 401 money was, because my old employer sent to another place different at 1st who then was instructed to send to Penchecks Trust. I had gotten a big bounce around trying to find where it the was. The 1st Rep from Penchecks Trust was nice Courtesy. Though did not do Great Job in response or Research. Just was like cant find nothing.So after making start over ordeal. I ended back calling Paychecks Trust. I had Rep Asil. She was awesome I explained my situation. She was the only one who went beyond the call found my money explained, to me what was happening put me at ease. I want comemend her. She was determined to resolve the issue. Not very many People in todays CSR, do this.She did.I was so pleased and put to ease. I know the next steps to follow and where my money is. Asil needs to Recognize. Rewarded for her work. I told Supervisor Rakia this who I asked for a supervisor. Even the supervisor Rak8a was wonderful.So this company needs more Asil And Rakia. 4 years ago, my father passed away. Now I receive a W2 tax form for some mysterious account worth about $30. I contact PenChecks to pay it out to myself, they give me very specific instructions how to do this. I mail everything in. Now, 3 months later, I receive a notice that one of my documents is no longer valid with no other explanation, and that I have to conjure up some more documents which Ive never heard of, nor would I even know how to obtain. This is absolute nonsense and probably some kind of scam.

ETA: Notice how they never refute anything said about them in their bad reviews when they respond to them, only state they cant find that account. Newsflash: I dont use my full name on Google. Obviously my 401k wasnt under an initial.2/3. That is how much of my 401(k) these people took in fees they did not tell me they would be assessing while they were in possession of my money. Your employer authorized the fees. Fees on my money. Fees they do not disclose upfront. Because obviously they want you to leave it sitting there so they can take and take and take from you. And they target people with less money because over $5k they need employee authorization for the fees and under $5k they dont. Took weeks to find out why my money had decreased so much since the original letter, so even more fees were assessed in the meantime. And even more fees to get the money out, after theyve already taken 2/3. Just one more way my ex-employer found to cheat me out of money—by giving it to this ethically-challenged business.

Edited to add:Thank you for your reply. My son emailed your help desk on March 3 at 6:20pm and has yet to receive a response. This implies your team is not interested in assisting him.My college-age sons summer internship employer CLOSED their 401k plans and PenChecks was charged with contacting the account holders to unwind the funds. What the letter DIDNT say is they happily take a large fee for EACH distribution they process. For large accounts this may be a drop in the bucket, but its nearly 25% of my sons accounts. The EMPLOYER chose to terminate the plans and PenChecks should charge THEM for ALL fees associated with this process. Where is the incentive to save when the administrator just takes whatever they want from the account. It certainly doesnt cost $45 to process ONE check and mail it standard to the new institution, let alone $90 due to the fact he has two individual accounts! I am an accountant/business owner and this is egregious.

If I could rate no stars, I would. I have been waiting on a certified check from them and every time I call its a different story and guarantee that it will be handled differently. I literally started this process on the 4th. I was told it would get to me by certified mail should be no later than the 10th. That should be was her way out of a guarantee, as on another call she said she never guarantees anything. I call on the 12th, Im told its been issued on the 8th, so the 15th is the latest youll get it. I also have to request the tracking number and it will get to me after the 15th. They dont provide it without a special request. I request it. I call the 15th, no answer, and no check. I call the 18th (as theyre closed on the weekend) and Im told the person never put in a request for the tracking number and the check wasnt issued until the 10th, but this agent will request the it and they will mark it urgent. I get the tracking number by email that day and try it. Its an invalid number. I email back with screen shots. They put in another urgent request for the tracking number. I call again on the 19th. They say lets stop payment on that check and Ill push through for an over night. . . . That was an option? What about wirelss? No one discussed any options they just decided what they were going to do, even though the first person I spoke with I asked what my options were. So its 3 days later, still waiting on the overnight check. Its Thursday, the fed ex tracking number says its coming out of California but the agent said thats wrong, its coming out of Chicago. Im in Arizona. It still says its in California with no movement. Now they say its totally out of thier hands. Also FedEx doesnt deliver their companies certified mail on the weekend as it requires a signature. . . . when are most people home???! And yes, the supervisor says, their company made mistakes but they did everything they could to correct it. So here I am 5 days before Christmas with no check and no consequences for them. Hopefully this will help you decide not to do business with them. Good luck and good night. Merry cussing Christmas. I will NEVER use this company again and I strongly advise anyone else to steer clear.EDUT: EPILOGUEI got both the USPS check and FedEx check today. I shredded the USPS one and no one will cash the other one. The bank wants to put a 3 day hold on it and now Im at a title loan cash checking place who has taken 30 minutes to verify it. Id give negative stars if I could. Dealing with Penchecks was a horrible experience that simply compounded my grief at the loss of my Husband. They insisted on addressing everything to him, even though they knew he was gone. That was sick and cruel. They wanted his signature to process anything. If I had signed, it would have been fraud, but they spent months refusing to address anything to me. I had to have my financial consultant help me navigate the impossible paperwork and we would send in all the forms they sent us, only to hear nothing for months. When we called, they said, oh, we put it on hold because you didnt send this other form - WHICH THEY NEVER PROVIDED! This miserable nightmare went on for over a year. We had to beg them for information, and each time it was the same - oh, you need this form yet, which again, they hadnt given us, and each form had to be notarized causing even more delay and expense. The pattern became so predictable, I am convinced they made the process as difficult and slow as possible on purpose, so that they could hold on to the funds and make interest on it for themselves. HORRIBLE COMPANY!

Be careful with your interactions with this organization. They have new employees not fully trained to handle our larger money interactions. You are held hostage essentially as this organization is assigned to handle your transfers, and new employees are not required to help the client beyond their expertise in large money transfers and language use needed and required by the IRS on their end. I am rating this organization as low due to lack of training and allowing inexperienced agents to work alone without mentorship or supervision.

Ive already spoken to my employer and the broker they used and neither state they were not aware that things were going to go down the way they did, so it feels someone dropped the ball somewhere and now I literally have to speak to my state regulators. It certainly didnt help that customer service was unable to answer a significant amount of questions. In fact, one woman actually laughed at me so if the company is going to go out of their way not to help, Ill handle this on my end then. The best thing that could be don is create awareness around their 401k dealings because I can imagine other companies not being aware of how bad they could screw their employees and their 401k.

I would never recommend this company!After several phone calls and follow up, documentation sent after a family members passing, this company took months to disperse deceased family members IRA. Now a year later, they still do not know how to operate. One representative tells you taxes have already been paid last year. Another representative is now saying taxes were never paid. This has now caused issues with settling the estate and having to amend documents, already filed at the county level. When asked to speak to a supervisor to start taking names of representatives this request was denied. I would never ever recommend using this company. They were unprofessional and not knowledgeable from the beginning. Do your own research before moving forward with this company. The Better Business Bureau has very accurate encounters posted.It appears your records did not reveal the several documents I sent it on various occasions beginning early Jan and the numerous follow up calls I made because no one would follow up with me. WARNING. DO NOT trust this company - especially with something as important as your life savings! This past year PenChecks sent my entire 401k to someone else. Upon discovering this devastating news, I provided PenChecks with everything they needed to “open an investigation”. (Btw they told me it would take 1-6 months to conclude. It took 12+ months and several calls from me to get any answers. They were not proactive and to this day won’t even tell me when it concluded - truly shocking lack of care or follow through for a client considering the circumstances)Penchecks said that since the money had already been distributed to the other person there was nothing they could or would do about it. Please BEWARE they have zero protections in place for you if they distribute your money to a fraudulent person - your money is NOT SAFE with them and there is an extreme lack of care in this process if it happens to you.I then received a letter from their attorney with minimal information from the investigation and it included the email used to transfer the money- this email was someone’s name and was not remotely close to my name. Their attorney also wrote that the money was transferred to a bank known to “specialize in prepaid debit cards.”So, just know that there are likely minimal to no alerts/ red flags when someone goes through the process of withdrawing their life savings.If you’re considering them I highly recommend looking elsewhere where your hard earned money is better taken care of and protected from fraud.

Incompetent customer service. Did not specify the account they were sending my investment to had to be in my name and then proceeded to charge me a reissue fee, and a check fee, etc. = to over 10% off the investment, absolutely ridiculous. Horrible business acumen and communication.

I spoke with Ricardo Gastelum. He immediately responded to my questions as the professional Im convinced he is. He is knowledgeable, polite, and energetic. He stayed with me until I was satisfied that my account was in good hands. He answered all my questions, and successfully addressed all of my concerns. Some of the issues I outlined needed further research, which he tackled in the most expeditious manner. Admittedly, I was quite anxious, but I was fortunate to have Ricardo on my side. After getting everything all set up for payments from a terminated plan to be sent by Penchecks via regular mail, I learned it was very important for one of the plan participants to receive his check immediately. The Amplify site suggested that the payment had already gone out via regular mail. But I called the toll-free number. Brett was able to retrieve the check from the mail and upgrade it to overnight delivery. They didnt have to do this - they could have said it was too late - but Brett and his colleagues helped me out and made me look good to our client.

I needed help with a wire transfer to another facility. The transfer was rejected twice so I reached out to Laurie in customer service for help. Wow, she was great. She really took the time to dig in and figure out what was going on.The issue was solved and then Laurie followed up later by phone just to verify all was well.
