Four service people- I asked for hot water to rinse my thermus, then i asked to use the restroom to finish cleaning it. I was told only customers. How is it that I am in a coffee store asking for a rinse but Im not a customer? 4 people standing there can’t figure that out? I left. Never to return to Peets on Shattuck. Hopefully the robots that will replace these individuals aren’t programed by any of them. SAD

Well-kept, clean, with friendly staff and service. The drinks and breakfast pastries were on point!My girlfriend and I came here to fuel up before commuting to the city. Its conveniently across the street from the BART Center St entrance, and Im sure itll be even more convenient when the new entrance opens up later this year.I got the morning glory muffin per the cashiers recommendation. Even though it was one of the uglier items on display, it was moist, sweet, delicious, and filling. It really did taste like carrot cake. :DTo drink, I got the caramel javiva blend. It was sweet and decadent, expertly topped with whipped cream and drizzled with extra caramel. It definitely gave me the morning boost I was looking for, all while satisfying my sweet tooth.

In downtown Berkeley. Just got a refresh and the space is nice and airy. Have a few tables and chairs but not really a place you want to sit and stay for a long time. Parking is tough. The staff were lovely! I appreciate them being open so early in the AM and the ease I was able to place my order and get my drink. Basically no wait!

Good coffee and good service, but the space is poorly organized.Bad seating arrangement, and for a coffee shop that is important. They only have 4 tables that everyone wants to sit at: the regular 1-2 person tables. Only 4 of them, while there are around 25 people there at any time and a lot of space, and most tables are taken by a single person (which is normal), so 4-8 people are sitting comfortably, the rest are stuck at the horrible hated uncomfortable “community tables” - there are two of them (one by the window, horrible), and if one person is sitting at either no one wants to sit there (of course).Also they removed all the tables by the brick wall - they should put 4 tables back there.Put small two person tables along the other window, NO ONE wants to sit with their back to the room (for everyone to look over your shoulder) facing the garbage cans outside. Cut the big table on the middle of the room into small 6 tables, and we will be happy.This used to be my favorite place. Still go there sometimes because the coffee is good, but the sitting arrangement is not good at all.

Peets is one of my favorite coffee brands and I have had their k-cups for a long while. Unfortunately, I had a really bad experience visiting this store. I was asking for a small latte but I was given a large one. Human mistakes and all but you would think that a more professional way to handle this is to confirm it with the customer if anything is unclear. The cashier even asked again what I would like to order but she just missed out the size part. And why is large the default size? Caffeine drinks are always the best when the drinker is left wanting more! They also closed the restroom over an 1 hr and a half before they would close the store. Again you would expect the real professionals could at least try to help with customers problems or point them to a restroom nearby. And they didnt. In fact, the guy I talked to seemed pretty fed up with what he does. Id definitely not come back here in a long long time.

Don’t waste your time. They need to close this location down. HORRIBLE customer service. Peet’s on Vine is the original location. If you go to Peet’s for coffee, avoid this location like the plague. The staff are extremely unfriendly, and if you are a white male, it only exemplifies the hate.

This location is a ground zero space for the urban issues facing any retail outlet in Downtown Berkeley CA. Given that notice, the staff at this business is OUTSTANDING!! As a mental health advocate… this staff deserves and should receive high hazard pay. The quality of caffeine is the high quality Peets experience I have enjoyed for 20+ years. They are a model of how commerce can interact with the very realurban realities facing us in this post pandemic social rubble and growing unsheltered population. Short comings are few, but significant. INTERNET access and speed is critical for students as well as active residents. Restroom facilities open during business operating hours and ADA compliant operating entry/exit. I unequivocally advocate for the exceptional caffeine quality, as well as the exceedingly important human aspects of doing business at ground zero. Peets!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I go here occasionally because it’s near my work but today while I was at the little area where they keep sugar, cream, stir sticks, etc. I saw a small woman come in who was obviously experiencing extreme poverty. She dug in the trash and pulled out an empty cup and began pouring milk from one of the little pitchers into the cup. An employee then came up, grabbed the pitcher out of her hand and told her “don’t come in here digging in the trash again”, the woman left defeated. I was heartbroken. She only wanted a little milk. A much more compassionate and reasonable approach would have been if the employee simply offered the woman a new cup of milk. Peet’s makes $2.7million dollars a day, they can afford to give the occasional cup of milk to someone so desperate that they are digging in the trash to reuse a cup.

I usually always give Peets a five Star. However, there was a new barista on duty and Im a very patient person, but the time was a lot longer, and she had to remake my drink because the temperature gauge fell inside. I think she was flustered because of the line. The manager who was present finally came out to assist and gave me my drink. I dont fault the new person as much as I do the manager, who should have been more cognizant of the line, and the young lady skills. Do better Peets, I know you can, and should have, a five star rating. Next time for sure, I hope.

I didnt expect it to work out as well as it has when they redid the interior several years ago. Now, in addition to the great coffee and baked snacks there is a natural flow to the place. Its downtown, so there is a queue sometimes forms, but they dissolve it quickly in general. Its more of a live place than many - not just a bunch of chairs with silent folk behind laptops, but friends chatting with friends, business discussions, small groups coming in to socialize briefly. A very diverse and cool crowd to go along with the excellent beverages and tasties, not to mention some of the best coffee beans probably on the planet.

Great staff: always friendly, attentive, accommodating. Good reliable coffee. (except decaf: their decaf latte is bitter/sour and tasted horrible both times when I ordered it! I usually don’t order it, so whatever... but I would order it more if they fixed it.)They run out of butter croissants by noon!!! They should stock up on them. Order twice as many!!! Otherwise, it’s a race of who gets there first. Everyone likes them and half of the time I don’t get any by the time I get there. And I don’t buy other pastry.Also they don’t have enough chairs. Each small table should have two chairs and the long one by the window should have five. And the marble counter should have 3-4. This place is very popular and gets very busy around noon.No one likes the big table in the middle, by the way. Homeless people tend to congregate there. Wish they would trade that table for three small tables. Even if there is just one homeless person at the big table, no one wants to sit there with them, of course. If the homeless person/people would sit at their own small table, we could sit at other small tables. Otherwise it’s a waste of the huge space occupied by that huge table.

Ive been enjoying Peets coffee since the late 70s. Always loved the coffee and experienced excellent and friendly service. I have always had great service at this Shattuck location as well as at the 4th Street, College Ave and Fruitvale locations. I was surprised and disappointed to have a poor experience at number number of other Peets in the East Bay Area. I did give corporate the feedback and I recently tried a few other East Bay Peets locations and am happy to see and very much appreciate the improving customer service.

Nice location. Quick service. I did notice that the place has covered all the power outlets. I assume its an attempt to keep people from staying too long on their laptops. I just needed to get me email when I noticed and my laptop had little battery left. Will keep this in mind in the future. The Starbucks nearby has power access for customers, btw.

This Peets has become one of my regular stops. Its on my walk from BART to my office and usually has friendly staff but that seemed to suffer a bit over the summer. Im hoping that some, or at least one, of my favorites will come back now that Cal is starting up for the fall term.They make a good cappuccino, not great, but much better than is found across the street at the $B. Like most Peets they just cant seem to get a solid foam on the drink, but its still better than what I do at home so why am I complaining?I actually like some of the food offerings they have, the cold lentil salad has become one of my favorites and I will get one from time to time just to put in the fridge at work in case I forget to bring lunch and dont want to go out.This part of town has a lot of transients, not specific to Peets but I do understand why they have to keep the bathroom locked. A few months ago people could borrow a key and get in and it never seemed clean, its better now that theyve moved to the code.

I watched the manager kick out a guy who had BOUGHT A FREAKING COFFEE and was quietly drinking it because he had been there 45 minutes. The restaurant was only 1/4 full, if that. Today I went in to buy morning coffee, as I have for years at Peets on Shattuck in Berkeley. I was in line waiting my turn and went to the cashier and started to order when the person ahead of me left. I started to order with eye contact from the counter person [a new person not one I knew] what I wanted. Then someone rushed up to my right with an internet order or online order. I was abruptly told by that counter person that computer orders have precedent and I most go to the back of the line--about 7 people. Which I did--waited a very long time as internet orders kept going ahead of me. I do not really understand what is happening, computer wise, as being almost 80 years of age, hard of hearing and severely disabled where the continued standing becomes painful. Why the counter people but me through a painful morning I do not know. If I was not old with all my grey hair and disabled I would have been treated better--a couple of folks Ive seen there before, and were in the line agreed. I cant believe this is my first time coming to a Peets Coffee bar !!I used to be a total SB caramel macchiato junkie, until today that is. I came to find out that SB is an offshoot of Peets. In fact, Peets used to supply their coffee to SB. IMO, Peets coffee is waaay better than SB coffee - its not bitter tasting and the caramel macchiato is at least 10X better !!Sorry SB but, Peets is much better.

This location can be somewhat crowded or almost completely empty it really varies throughout the day and youll never be able to predict which one is which as a blind person I find it difficult to make my way to the counter to purchase. They have a lot of product stacked up and it interferes with navigating and the lineup at times

Be very careful when walking to this location. About 20 street people always gather around this store. When I last went there one of their pit bulls lunged at me. I was within inches for being a mauled victim. I am74 and handicapped also, but and this place is very dangerous for anyone to go to. It is a matter of time before someone gets hurt or MAULED AT PEETS. I told the kids working the counter at Peet;s and they did not seem to care. Berkeley is becoming one big homeless camp. The same group, with dogs, were camping on the handicap walk way at post office a few afternoons later. In fear I did my mailing in Albany.

I went in to the Shattuck Ave. Berkeley today to buy a round of coffees and one person wanted a hot water. I was fully willing to pay the $1 they want to charge for the cup for the hot water, thats ridiculous considering there are laws saying water is free but I have no problem paying $1 for a 2cent cup, even after buying a round of coffees more than making up for any profit they might lose on the water cup.What pushed it all over the edge was an assistant?manager (with passive aggressiveness and taking her job way too seriousness going on.. but hey weve all been there) named LIZZ who actually went out of her way to walk up to me and tell me I was taking too many SUGAR packets (I counted and it was 8). I told her that they were for all the drinks I just bought and that this was ridiculous and asked to speak to the manager. She said she was the manager, then when I asked her her name and how to reach corporate she quickly divulged she wast actually the manager, who was really in back and busy...At that point she was angry even though I was nothing but nice and professional in my words AND my inflection. Im a very easy person to get along with and I avoid confrontation.THEN, She had no right to then tell me that I might as well just not come back to the store... which she recanted when I mentioned how much I spent there a month and/or how many of my coworkers would probably switch to Starbucks once I told them my experience and/or mentioning Yelp, Yahoo Locals, and the half a dozen other websites I am going to paste this in to.If you want to avoid extremely rude, strangely entitled, and just plain horrible to their customers come to Peets on Shatttuck... otherwise go to Starbucks or any other Peets (as I generally respect their company). As far as Lizz goes... she just cost your store a lot of money and I am willing to bet that she does it a lot.

Boycott Peets! Its become just like Starbucks only with worse working conditions. FWIW, this is not the original (thats on Walnut Square), but all their stores look the same. If you want to read more there were a couple of stories in the East Bay Express. One was called something like how Peets starbucked itself. The other was about how the owner sold the chain to a private equity investor. Alfred Peet much be turning in his grave.
