James is awesome!! I’ve ridden bikes most of my life but am totally new to road bikes. His laid back approach and level of detail in explaining everything really helped me to better understand the sport as a whole. His attention to detail was amazing as small changes made a huge difference in comfort and performance. I rode 30 miles the following day and felt amazing the entire time. I highly recommend getting a fitting from James and will definitely be back in the future.

James is the man. I committed to racing in RAAM 2023 and decided I better get a bike fit on the TT bike I borrowed before heading out across the country. James knew all about RAAM and shared his experiences racing it twice! He really knows his stuff and I didn’t have any issues with my fit the entire race. He will assess your cycling abilities and needs, and fit your bike to match, whether you are a competitive ultra-endurance athlete or a recreational fitness rider (like me), or anyone in between. James has advanced equipment in his fitting studio, is easy to talk to, and knowledgeable. I had an all-around great fitting experience and will be back to visit him with future bikes.

James is awesome! We spent time talking about my goals and he tailored the fit to exactly what I was looking for. The aches and pains I had riding went away and theres a noticeable difference in my power output. Made tweaks to cleat placement, saddle height / angle, stem length, etc.. to get the most comfortable position. His Retul setup is awesome and shows how the adjustments affect ankle, knee, hip agents in order to get the optimal position.Would recommend to anyone looking to get a proper fit!

James is the best in North County when it comes to bike fits. We first discussed my riding style and goals. He looked at my shoes and then put me on the trainer and wired me with the Retül technology to more precisely analyze my position. The process took about 2.5 hours. We looked at the key angles that the Retul calculated and from there we tried different setups until we felt comfortable with the position. James knows that, even when we have nailed the right angle, being set up on the trainer can be different from riding on open roads/dirt trails, so you can always go back to him to refine your position within a month of your bike fit. Hes got 100s, if not 1000s of bike fits done underneath him, spending time honing his craft with the best bike fitters in the country. Hell make you fast and comfortable on your bike, and youll learn a ton from him. Go see him.

James has a killer set up. Highly recommend going to him for your bike fit. This is completely different from what you would get at a bike shop. James has the Retül system and can track your body angle at each joint and get you in the right position. Since my fit I’m more comfortable on the bike and am able to drive more power into the pedals. Get your bike fit!

I have been fit for a bike before, and was planning on purchasing my first TT bike when I was pointed in James direction. The experience with Oceanside Bike Fit was totally different in the best ways possible. I had a pre-fit session where we did bike work, and then literally shopped together digging into the dimensions of each bike. He helped me pick the best fitting bike, which even including moving down a size based on my body even though my height recommended a larger size. Once the bike came in, we completed another session and I am in love with the fit. I have never rode more hours, more comfortably. James is the best! Dont hesitate, get fit or re-fit by him!

Best bike fit I have ever had. Typical fits don’t factor in how you want to feel, position you like best, and how you feel in the position they put you in. Having James fit my bike to me was one of the best investments Ive ever made. He improved my performance on the bike better than any accessory Ive have, or could have added to my bike. Simply amazing the difference his adjustments made by making me faster, and also easier for me to ride. Every rider should have James fit their bike. Im not your lean and young rider. Im 72 yrs. old and weigh 230 lbs. I ride 25 miles every other day and have been doing that for that last 8 months. Ive lost 30 lbs. since riding.I have arthritis in both knees. It was painful and I couldnt go as fast as I wanted to. When James made the adjustments, I could tell immediately right there the knee pain was gone! James is a true professional and I could tell he loves the sport and helping other riders. HIGHLY RECOMMEND JAMES. The fitting was actually fun.

I am fairly new to cycling, and I had never had a professional bike fit before seeing James. Even though I had read how important they were, during my limited riding, I always felt that my position was good enough. I tweaked the seat height and made some other basic adjustments after watching YouTube. When I bought a new bike, I decided that it was time to see a professional about the fit. I rode a few rides prior to seeing James, and I thought the bike fit pretty well. The bike felt amazing after James made adjustments, it was a night and day difference. I honestly could not believe how much more comfortable I was. I finished the BWR Wafer ride shortly after the fit, and I had tired legs, but no pain anywhere. The fitting experience itself was wonderful, and I cant recommend Oceanside Bike Fit enough.

Extremely professional, knowledgeable and personable this experience was perfect. I’ve done 115miles this week, since the fit and the bike feels perfectly crafted to my size and riding style. My cleats also fit and feel extremely comfortable.I highly recommend you use James for a bike fit whenever you buy a new bike or if you haven’t ever done one in the past. Not only will it potentially avert injury, it’ll save you a lot of messing about in the long run. It’ll also probably up your cycling game and make you a more efficient rider. James did an amazing job. I noticed the difference right away.I bought a Peloton over a year ago and have been using it 5-6 days a week. I followed the on line instructions to adjust the seat, handlebars and shoes. However, my rides never felt comfortable with these setting.James was recommended to me by a bike shop. He adjusted my shoes, saddle position, seat height, and handlebar position to fit my body. I met with James back in September of last year and I didn’t immediately leave a review because I wanted some time to see how much of a difference the bike fit would make. Let me start by saying that James is wonderful to work with. Very relaxed, very easy to work with, and has tons of experience and knowledge in cycling. I had him fit me with my Trek Madone, which I have since sold and upgraded to the Emonda SLR 9. The fitting itself was quick and easy about 90 min total. I explained I wanted a bit more of an aggressive position and he was able to figure out all of the proper angles with his computer tech. Actually, a very interesting process. We ended up slamming the stem and changing the seat height along with forward position of the seat. It’s amazing how such small adjustments can make such a large difference. I have had no back pain, no knee or ankle pain and overall a feeling of more power. James sent me all the measurements for my set up, so on my next bike it was a breeze to get everything dialed in. Overall, James did a fantastic job and if I ever run into issues again, I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to him.

Fantastic overall experience. My feet are cured, no more numbness, no calf pain and gained obvious extra power. I felt much better in the new position than the one I had previously for years. Only downside is that my butt now hurts because I need to get used to a new optimized saddle that James kindly lent me out for trial, the time I buy one on my own. The best fitting experience I have had! I went in without a bike to get fit for a TT bike and James was kind enough to fit me the same day for my road bike. He went above and beyond to ensure I was happy with the fit and all of my questions were answered. Every part of the session was intentional from the space he has set up for the fit, the process from start to end, and the adjustments made. We ended the session with a much better setup for my road bike and me feeling comfortable and strong in my new position. James totally hooked me up! After a proper fitting and adjustment in saddle position + stem length on my gravel bike, I raced 2 days later. I felt super strong, pain free, + one with my bike—2nd place podium!What an incredible difference in comfort and power. I kept bracing for the old neck and back pain to come and it never did. This is my second fit with James and I could not have had more different experiences, but both with perfect results. The first was a fit before buying my first road bike where measurements were taken and I excitedly ordered the right size on the spot from his studio. A second fit on the real bike once it arrived and, as promised, it feels so natural it’s as if I have been riding it for years. Foolishly, I took those measurements (and some bad advice) and bought a gravel bike for my first BWR. James was straight; the bike did not fit me and even small measures off would likely have me in hours of misery later on. James takes the time to talk with you about his process and explain his thinking. I trust him. The bike went back. Further, he worked with me after to find the right bike based on my body geometry and riding goals. I have every confidence in James’s expertise and, in turn, have confidence in my bikes to ride, handle and respond the way I need to maximize my enjoyment and performance.

My review is longer because my journey to Oceanside Bike Fit and James is different from other seasoned bike riders getting a fit. I’m a mountain biker and it’s all I have ever done. Until 3-years ago I lived just outside Atlanta and owned a house on Lake Lanier. I would ride right out my garage and get it on for endless miles of sun and fun in the hills and mountains surrounding my home. Absolutely perfect…Then I moved to San Diego where there were no trails right outside my garage door. I went from riding 90% trails to 90% street. The mountain bike had to go but every road bike I bought just didn’t fit right. Aches, pains and fatigue… I kept buying bike after bike hoping for a better result and I kept guessing about what I needed to change on the bike to make it comfortable.Ultimately, I contacted a custom bike frame builder hoping he could use my body measurements and point me toward the right bike that would fit me. He told me body measurements alone are highly inaccurate to select a proper frame size and he couldn’t help me zero-in on a proper build until I had a professional bike fitter measure me on professional bike fitting equipment.Enter Oceanside Bike Fit and James Koch... I needed to get measured and I didn’t want the conflict of interest to step inside any business that sells bikes and does fittings. I wanted the emphasis to be strictly on me without sales hype, so I started to search for an independent fitter. I’m happy to report that my experience with James was top notch and highly professional, but you need to be prepared for BAD NEWS!I booked my appointment requesting to be measured for a custom bike frame and I also wanted to get help with a brand-new gravel bike I just purchased. When I arrived for my appointment James wanted to see how my current bike was setup. He was about 10-minutes into adjustments on the bike when he stopped the session and let me know that the bike I just purchased would NEVER FIT ME properly! (The bad news!)That’s when I realized I had done it again. Purchased yet another bike based on height charts and standover specs that wouldn’t fit me properly! James went on to measure me for custom bike frame and that’s when the magic happened for me.Once James had my specs dialed into his equipment my stance and form was so remarkably comfortable. It was like someone whisked me away to some other reality.My recommendation is you book an appointment with James ASAP and find out what bike fits you best before you buy it and don’t pee away thousands of dollars like I did on a bike (or in my case many of them) that won’t fit you properly. James and Oceanside Bike Fit is a first-class operation and he lives up to the 5-star reputation he has justifiably earned.

As a Cyclists thats what we all want, a person that makes sure we are getting the full optimization of our bikes.So heres the premise, I have been riding a 54cm bike and been cycling for almost 10 years. However this time, I wanted to join Granfondo and races therefore I want to make sure that Im in my optimal and best position. Although I did not get his full bike fit services, (due to Cervélos idiotic threaded axle skewers) James is still kind enough to give me advice and allowed me to ride in front of his house so that he can see how I ride, my mannerisms when it comes to my pedaling, and my positioning.He could have just told me that come back some other time. Many years ago I had worn out my cycling shoes and replaced them with a new pair. I started to have pain in my knees when I rode using the new shoes. I just could not get the cleats in the correct position. I tried other vendors for fitting without satisfaction. James, of Oceanside Bike Fit, got my cleats set so that my knees no longer hurt, set my new saddle to a better position and set my handle bars to relieve stress on my back. He also reviewed my spin. I am training for an ironman, so I wanted a bike that would be practical for after I was done with my race. He helped fit my road bike and recommend the proper equipment to make my bike a 2 in 1. Having literally no experience on a bike without a basket and bell, James at Oceanside Bike Fit was a huge help to me when I took the plunge into Peloton life. I had the bike for about a week and had adjusted it myself based off the instructions they give you, but it didn’t feel right at all. After a fit with James, I realized how important it was for the bike and my body to be aligned! Sometimes you purchase a bike and blindly set it up like you always have and hope for the best. With dumb luck, you may be able to ride for years without problems. This time it did not work for me.I started to develop lower back pain with saddle issues, and I figured it was time to seek professional help. I’ve been riding bikes for over 30 years and really didn’t think much about bike fit. I occasionally would get some back pain on longer rides and just figured that probably had as much to do with the bike as it did all the other activities and work that I did. Well, as I started training for BWR and really putting in the miles my back started bothering me a lot so, on the recommendation of a friend, I went to see James. I was thinking he wouldn’t be able to do much since I have a Canyon Grail which has a proprietary one piece stem/handlebar. Boy was I wrong! An hour later after a few fairly minor adjustments James was done and I was on my way to see how things would work out. My back issues slowly went away on the bike and I ended up finishing BWR with ZERO back pain! I have been preparing for a bike tour from San Francisco to Encinitas for the past couple months, and took my steel frame gravel monster in to James to get it fitted. Normally he works with people with those super aero carbon bikes who are looking to maximize their race performance, but he was able to help me adjust my bike for performance and comfort on the long haul. He explained what he was doing the entire time, in just the right terms that I could understand. Often a lot of cyclists will come off with an attitude of elitism and James couldn’t be further from this. He clearly has a passion for cycling, but he kept our conversation grounded in terms that I could understand. He went beyond what what I expected to be included in a fit and gave me tips on how to train for the tour, as well as my goals beyond that. I couldn’t recommend anyone better than James to do a bike fit. You will leave with a better riding bike, and a better understanding of cycling.

I was advised to get a bike fit before I purchased my bike (and not rely on the online calculator) and it was the best advice.Found James locally and contacted him the day before labor day. I received word and scheduled an appt. within 24 hours. After a Mercedes blew me and my bike up in January, James helped steer me to the right new bike, and made sure I was in my optimal position for comfort and speed. At Age Group Triathlon Worlds in Lausanne, Switzerland I was fourth out of the water, had the best bike split in my age group and held on in the run for a second place finish . So I started road cycling about 5 years ago and was instantly addicted. I knew nothing about the sport, equipment, etc. I had bought a bike off of a friend and came to realize that it wasnt the right size bike for me. The more I rode it, the more back pain it caused me so I made the decision to commit, upgrade and purchase a carbon fiber bike from a major retail store here in San Diego. They claimed to do proper bike fittings but what I came to learn years, thousands of dollars and several back injuries later, was that what they used for fitting was a mechanism that is used to essentially sell bikes NOT a professional, LEGIT fitting which is completely misleading and I feel extremely irresponsible. I paid over $3,000 for the bike and another $250 for the fitting. The problem was the back pain didnt go away, it got worse the more I rode, so I went back to this store THREE times to make adjustments on the bike to address the pain but nothing helped again because THEY ARE NOT professional fitters!! . So essentially I was misled into thinking that I had the right fit for years! So $1000s of dollars in massage therapy and still I was in pain so much so that I strongly considered quitting riding because I couldnt take it anymore.. Desperate and pretty much all hope for my riding future lost, I found James online... I booked with him, and after looking at me for a couple seconds he was able to identify the issue almost instantly. He spent a couple hours with me and this was an ACTUAL, legitimate bike fitting!! Fast forward two weeks after our fitting session and Im so fing stoked to say Ive been riding pain free for the first time in 5+years!!! Its insane to realize how long Ive been riding with the completely incorrect fit... James, youve saved my riding life!! I cant thank you enough, brother! Youve legitimately helped reinvent my riding game to something I thought was not possible... HONESTLY I was depressed at the thought of not being able to ride any more. IF you are in the same position as I was, desperate for an answer, James is the real deal, let him hook it up !!! I just finished a 30 mile ride which was UNTHINKABLE prior to working with James. I had a bike fit with James a couple months ago that has changed my cycling life forever! Prior to the bike fit I was having extremely tender saddle sores and literally felt like my body was getting beaten up with longer rides. I was being evaluated by the orthopedic department for hand palsy because my hands would become numb for a week after a long ride. I could not sleep with my elbows bent or they would go numb. They called it the double crush syndrome where my ulnar nerve was being crushed in two locations ( my hand and elbow). There recommendations were to stop biking if it hurts. I went to see James at the Oceanside Bike fit to have my position evaluated and within 3 weeks I had feeling in my hands and was able to sleep with my elbow bent.
