Had cataract removed from both eyes and laser treatment to adjust astigmatisms and insert lens; results were amazing! The medical team assisting Dr. Mandel was informative, courteous, respectful and friendly. Dr. Mandel and his staff were wonderful. They were proactive and explained everything about my cataract surgery clearly. While there was some wait to ultimately be scheduled for the surgery, once scheduled, there was very little wait time in the office. The surgery itself went quickly and painlessly. Just two weeks after surgery my vision is significantly better (uncorrected) than it was previously with contact lenses. Thank you Dr. Mandel.

I met Mark a few year ago and was very impressed by his demeanor. A year later I scheduled my Cataract surgery. I got the ICL surgery. Overall the surgery took maybe 30 min. Not the easiest thing to sit through but Dr. Mandel was patient and guided me through what I needed to do. It was smooth once I figured it out. Recovery was quick. Life changing to not have to wake up and find my glasses or put on contacts. If youre looking for a permanent solution, Id recommend Dr. Mandel.

The office staff answered all my questions to help me prepare for my cataract surgery. I would like to share about the wonderful cataract surgery care and results I received from Dr. Mark Mandel and Optima Eye care in Hayward CA.All interactions with the staff and providers were personal, efficient, and caring. Office wait times for the pre and post-op appointments were minimal. I have suffered from dry eyes for the past 14 years, I cant wear contacts and was not a candidate for lastic, so I opted for ICL. Throughout the whole process their whole team was very sweet, thorough, and helpful. I dont think I could of asked for anything better. I am healing pretty nicely post op so far. No regrets!Veronica

I recently had cataract surgeries performed by Dr. Mandel. I have to say my experience from beginning to end was exceptional. His entire staff from the receptionist to the post-op nurses were professional, personable, caring and communicative. Dr. Mandel answered all of my questions throughout the process and for the first time in 50 years I dont need glasses! The laser-assisted procedure and multifocal lenses worked out very well for me. Im grateful to everyone at Optima and especially Dr. Mandel for making this such a positive experience. Mahalo!!

I have to say that I am so happy I went through with this. It is my third day and everything in my life is already so much easier, so much more beautiful, and I just feel overall confident. Dr. Mandel and his magic hands have blessed over 60,000 people, dont even get me started with his assistants, they were all so wonderful. One of his employees/technicians was actually a previous patient of his, she loved his work, went back to school, and is now working under him, definitely made me feel more at ease. Honestly, its insane to see even more clear that I did with my best glasses, lenses cant even compare to this guys, I feel like Im watching my life through a HDTV screen, all thanks to Dr. Mandel and his assistants! Went to my post-op appointment the next day, and I wouldve never thought in my life that I would be told that I have 20/20 vision :)

AMAZING! I mean, where do I start? From the first moment talking with Dr. Mandels staff to the last moment when I left the office I felt, welcomed, heard, and cared for. I was VERY nervous to get the procedure and with every question I asked and concern that I brought up Dr. Mandel and his staff answered each question, took every one of my concerns seriously and kept me well-informed. I would HIGHLY recommend this office to anyone seeking this type of procedure. One other note: Dr. Mandel knows his stuff and it shows in his genius during the surgery. He talked me through it, was very calm and I was able to actually relax during the procedure. Hes a wonder! I see at almost 20/20 right now and Im only 2 weeks out from my procedure. Also, their instructions on after-care are so clear. I had a great recovery as I followed their instructions to the letter. It was fantastic. Thanks to all of you! Dr Mandel and his team of optometrists and nurses/techs were so professional, skilled and reassuring. They prepare the patients with well-written information and videos that educate and answer most questions ahead of the consultations. Dr. Mandel took the time to thoroughly answer my other questions in my initial consultation and was also kind to answer subsequent questions by text.He and his team also accommodated my schedule which was complicated by my coming from out of town and also my vacation plans.During the surgery, Dr Mandel was kind and reassuring and alleviated my anxiety. The post-op instructions were clear and easy to follow too. Most importantly, Dr Mandel performed an absolutely perfect surgery on both my eyes! I couldnt ask for a better outcome - although I expected to possibly need a slight correction or maybe glasses for nighttime driving, I havent needed anything at all. I highly recommend Dr. Mandel and his efficient, professional and compassionate staff if you are in need of cataract surgery. I was well informed of every step in the process verbally and in writing and was comfortable throughout. Both pre and post op instructions were clear and effective and my resulting vision is frankly astonishing. I had been accustomed to wearing thick glasses since kindergarten but can now drive without any glasses at all. My independence has been enhanced immeasurably and I want to thank Dr. Mandel, the anesthesiologists who were also great and all the terrific nurses and other staff members for my improved vision.

Dr Mandel is a superb cataract surgeon. But he is also very busy, and responsible for a large support team. So although he can answer every question, he doesnt always have enough to spend answering the same questions over and over from so many patients. I would give 4 stars considering I dont have the experience the competition. Some may deduct because the facilities are not new. But for me confidence in the surgery overrides other issues, and so far I am not disappointed, and using the LAL, I expect even more spectacular results when the adjustments are complete.

Everyone at the office is caring, answered our questions with patience which is a big deal to me. If I sensed any attitude or discontent with anybody there this wouldve been a different review but I have only positive feedback with Mark Mandel and team. I was worried about my mom and wanted her to be as comfortable and calm as possible and the team made her feel comfortable. Since I had Dr. Mandel perform my Lasik surgery 18 years ago I was quite confident that he was the eye surgeon I wanted to have remove my cataracts. My decision appears to have been a great one as he performed cataract surgery on both of my eyes over the last 3 weeks. I had high myopia, not correctable w/ LASIK. Dr. Mandel explained the best option to correct my vision. I had the EVO ICL procedure 4 days ago, and I am able to see clearly for the first time in my life…in total awe! All appointments were efficient and his staff is friendly. The surgery itself was punctual, painless and quick. Please do your homework and review all the information on vision correction provided by Dr. Mandel’s office. Do your own research, too, and come prepared to appointments w/ questions. I highly recommend Dr. Mandel.

When initially exploring lens replacement surgery, I would have liked an explanation of postoperative restrictions and medication schedule so I could have planned more appropriately. I’m very pleased with the outcome of my procedure. All the staff has been very kind and supportive. Your telephone tree is totally obnoxious. There has to be a way for repeat callers to bypass it with an expert explanation right up front. The insistence on continued masking is puzzling and annoying given the scientific literature on masking that shows it doesn’t do anything to prevent the spread of respiratory disease. A good place to start is the Cochrane Library, Physical interventions, to interrupt, or reduce the spread of respiratory viruses, by Jefferson et all published in January 2023.

Good staff overall and great surgeon but I wish he made little more time for patient’s questions or concerns. I still am not clear on why my multi focal lens is still blurry after several visits driving 170 miles round trip from the valley. The office personnel are nice but that office is a bit chaotic in terms of phone system and appts. In the end he cares. I recommend him👍

Dr. Mark Mandel MD did Lasik Cataract surgery on my two eyes.The surgery was done with a computer and the surgery was overquickly and all I saw were colors and I experienced no pain!Dr. Mandel has an excellent staff that knows what their job is in preparing me for surgery. I just had my ICL surgery done at Dr. Mandel’s Hayward office, and I am SO happy!! Dr. Mandel’s office has been extremely helpful. They were patient with me while I figured out scheduling, they sent an informational packet, they called for follow ups and to make sure I didn’t have questions prior to surgery, and Layla was so sweet and patient with me when I was trying to figure out payment! Dr. Mandel’s staff on surgery day was also extremely compassionate and reassuring (Candice and Jeanette were so helpful). I was devastated when I wasn’t a candidate for Lasik, and I’m so glad I got ICL done with Dr. Mandel. He was extremely nice and supportive throughout the entire process, including the surgery itself. I am still recovering some but my vision is 20/20, and I couldn’t be happier! The only suggestion I would have for people is to make sure you read their pre op instructions carefully, come to your testing appointment with questions, and be organized prior to surgery!

My experience with Mark R. Mandel, MD in 1995–1996 was a nightmare. Dr. Mandel performed automated lamellar keratoplasty (ALK) on my left eye on 9/12/1995 and ALK on my right eye on 9/28/1995. He performed bilateral radial keratotomy (RK) and astigmatic keratotomy (AK) on me on 1/16/1996. I have permanent vision quality problems including severe starbursts and halos around lights, ghost images, and poor contrast sensitivity due to higher order aberrations (HOAs). My wavefront aberrometry results from 10/15/2007 (see photo) show the following HOA totals: right eye = 1.432 microns, left eye = 1.847 microns. I believe that the suction used to perform ALK created more floaters. Also, I was overcorrected in my left eye.I believe that Dr. Mandel was not honest with me during our informed consent discussion on 8/23/1995. The RK informed consent form (see photo) fails to mention starbursts, halos, ghost images, overcorrection, etc. The RK form does mention glare, but starbursts and halos are not the same as glare. The RK form does not mention giving consent for AK. Dr. Mandel did not verbally inform me that he was going to perform AK in addition to RK. I recall that he told me he was going to perform a “mini-RK” on both eyes, but there is nothing mini about the RK surgery he performed on each eye: 8 radial incisions creating a small optical zone (3.75 mm, according to my medical records), plus the 2 AK cuts. On 7/10/1996, when I expressed concern that I could see my RK and AK scarring in the mirror, he replied, “It’s totally trivial to life…it’s meaningless,” and then told me to “grow up.” Although the RK form does state that “[s]car on cornea may be visible to patient,” I think Dr. Mandel’s response was unprofessional.I submitted a complaint dated 10/10/1996 about Dr. Mandel to the Ethics Committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). I have a photocopy of Dr. Mandel’s 12/18/1996 letter of response to the AAO’s Ethics Committee regarding my complaint. He handed it to me in small claims court on 3/31/1999 (another story) as one of his defense documents. He also gave a copy to the judge.I do not believe I was properly evaluated as a candidate for refractive surgery. On page 1 of his response letter (see photo), Dr. Mandel states: “Because of Gil’s obviously keen interest in refractive surgery (from his questionnaire) one of our staff members telephoned Gil to inform him that he was a good candidate for ALK and invited him to the office for an evaluation…” First of all, no, I completed the Refractive Surgery Patient Questionnaire *at* my evaluation on 8/23/1995 (see photo), not beforehis office called me on 8/2/1995. Secondly, why was I told that I was a “good candidate” *before* my evaluation?On page 1 of his letter, Dr. Mandel writes that on 8/23/1995, “a complete ophthalmic evaluation…was performed” (see photo). However, I do not recall being tested for dry eye. I had evaporative dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which was related to my moderate acne. Even though I wrote contact lens intolerance due to “dry eyes” on my questionnaire (see photo) and indicated that I was taking a medication known to cause dry eye side effects (decrease in tear production), I do not see any results of diagnostic dry eye testing such as tear break-up time (TBUT) or Schirmer’s test on my Keratorefractive History & Exam form (see photo) from my evaluation. Pre-existing dry eye is considered a relative contraindication to refractive surgery. Since 2001, Dr. Mandel’s website has stated: “If we diagnose a dry eye prior to your LASIK procedure, we must postpone the surgery until the dry eye is resolved…[y]our safety is our primary concern and we will do nothing to compromise your care and everything to ensure that you have an outstanding result.” Why was I not tested for dry eye, despite the fact that I complained about it on my questionnaire, in 1995? Furthermore, how was my evaluation considered “complete” without dry eye testing?Twenty+ years later, I still have deep regret that I trusted Dr. Mandel with my eyes.

From the first diagnostic visit to the surgery for the second eye, every experience was great. The members of the staff were courteous, helpful and friendly. Everything went incredibly well. The staff are incredible, welcoming, transparent, and kind. The Lasik procedure itself didn’t take very long (about ten minutes) and Dr. Mandel and his team calmly and reassuringly guide you through each step. I had Lasik on one eye, and cataract lens replacement on the other eye. Everything - from the front counter to the operating room - was outstanding. Every person that has helped me along the way has been professional and courteous. Helen was there for most if not all of my visits, and she made sure I was well taken care of. But I could say the same about all the other staff as well. I am continuing in my post-op follow-up appointments. Dr. Mandel is making sure I get the best possible vision from my surgeries. Dr. Mandel is an excellent surgeon, which is most important when someone is working on your eyes. I had cataract surgeries done on both eyes. I would have liked more guidance on the pros and cons of different lenses and his patient experiences with them. I got the names of the lenses but was doing the research myself for the most part and asking others about them. Also, initially, I had trouble getting a hold of the administrative folks at his office, getting a call back in timely basis. Finally, whenever a call is made, there is a long recitation of Covid rules. For those of us who have called multiple times already or do not need to go into the office, it would be nice to have the option of skipping the long message.

I had cataracts and I had both eyes done by Dr. Mandel. I did feel everyone made me quite comfortable and explained what was going to happen. One thing I would have like to know a bit more from the Dr. or nurse what exactly each eye drop did. I know there is a lot of info on the bottle when you get it but it is very tiny and the Dr. could definitely tell the patient much better. The only thing I would advise is how to do the eye drops. For me I had my own system but at times it could get confusing especially when you do one eye and then wait a week then do the 2nd eye. I do have to say it can be difficult to get a hold of anyone in the office and that can even be when I push #6. I would highly recommend this office for eye surgery for sure

Words can’t explain how thankful I am for Dr.Mandel & his team! I had PRK surgery and it was such an experience. He walked me through the entire procedure on the day of my consultation as well as throughout my surgeries. I never thought I would be able to have eye surgery because all my past doctors have always told me I was not a good candidate or that my vision was too poor that it wouldn’t work, well Dr.Mandel told me other wise and because of that I am able to see all the small details I’ve gone my whole life without seeing. This is a busy office so dont be surprised if there is a wait. The MDs focus is on eye surgeries and he delegates most other services to ODs and technicians.My personal outcome with cataract procedures here was:one eye Average - one eye Subpar.The positive: cataracts were successfully removed.The negative: overall my visual acuity is poorer and although I paid a premium for Toric implants, astigmatism was not completely corrected.I was calm and aware during the first procedure and over anesthetized for the second procedure which may have had something to do with the outcome.Replacing the implants is a risky procedure and not recommended and although my vision could be improved with glasses my stated objective from the beginning was to avoid the need for glasses. Thats my story -YMMV.

If there were ten stars, I would give ten stars. My mother was a patient of Dr. Mandel over 20 years ago and had performed two cornea transplants on her eyes. Back then, as a child, I remember him being so gentle so kind and fast forward to present day, he is still the same. My mother had a bad eye infection that caused us to return to his office and she was taken care of by Dr. Alberelli. She was just as awesome, professional, kind, and caring like Dr. Mandel. I had LASIK performed by Dr. Mandel and his team of professionals. Dr. Mandel and his team truly are great. They were very complete through the whole process. The consultation was great, they answered all my questions, performed various tests to ensure which procedure was best for me. I was the first LASIK surgery of the morning and was taken care of very well, from the pre-op drops and instructions to the actual procedure. During the procedure I felt safe (very important for me) and Dr. Mandel was very good at explaining what was coming next so you always new what to expect and that was very helpful, one of the most important things in my opinion. It can be scary with your eyes being worked on but he has a good way of making you feel safe, his words were very reassuring. Also one of the team members gave me a teddy bear to hold, made me laugh but actually just what I needed to get a quick laugh and relieve my nerves. Immediately post-op Dr. Lewis helped give post-op instructions that were very clear and complete as well as inspect the flap, he was very kind and patient; really everyone was great. So how was the procedure and results? Absolutely wonderful so far, this is day 1 after surgery. If I didnt know I had LASIK done I would not know, that is how good I feel today and that is not an exaggeration. Thank you Dr. Mandel and team! Your work is truly great and made a wonderful experience! Anyone who asks me I will be recommending your office.

Dr. Mark Mandel did Lasik surgery on my eyes in 1997. I have what is called monovision. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. To this day I only use a pair of over-the-counter glasses when I am reading under fluorescent light; when I am outside with natural light I read perfectly. I am really glad I had the surgery!

Best doctors in the Bay Area. I was referred by my optometrist, the late Dr. Roy Black, professor at U.C. Berkley, to Dr. Mandel for LASIK assessment. I had acute astigmatism, and not deemed a good candidate for the procedure by another practice. Dr. Mandel wad able to correct my vision to 20/20 in 2001, and 14 years later, I am now only having to wear occasional 0.5 reading glasses when my eyes are tired. Years later, my mother was, referred to Dr. Barez by her physician for macular degeneration, and continues under her care, still with great vision in her late 80s.
