I definitely did not thank Dr. Downing, and all the great people at Ortho 1, enough! I’m really grateful for the kind attention and stellar care when I was so vulnerable. Three months post surgery I am almost pain-free. I am ecstatic to have my left hand fully-functional and getting stronger each day. I remain in awe of the power and intricacies of the human body…With the meticulous genius Dr. Downing in control of the surgical repair, my results are beyond the beyonds.

I was pleased with the demeanor of Dr. Kris Downing. He was thorough and answered my questions. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done for my advanced arthritis so my options are limited. His staff was courteous and helpful. A good doctor in my opinion.

Downing MD did a great job. I have a plate and 3 pins. Left wrist was fractured. He got me to a point where Therapy is able to get me back to 100%. Not promised. But so far improving rapidly.

So far, so good, haven’t had my follow up yet. But so far, I always like to think that I made the right decision on his recommendation. When it comes to amputation, that’s always a hard one to figure out when there’s been a past history of alternatives, and second opinions That I didn’t have the luxury of doing because of the maximum pain I was having, but he seemed to know what he was doing and he was absolutely comfortable with me going under to get into the MRI whereas most doctors seem to feel like it’s like pulling teeth to get them to put me completely under. I’m very claustrophobic and in the most cases I have yet to get a Norco Pedic doctor to OK that procedure he has been the only one.

Very professional staff and Dr. Downing is an excellent Orthopedic Surgeon. My injured right mallet finger is healing up exactly like he said after a tendon tear at the end joint. I am now able to remove the splint during day & back on at night for 4-6 weeks during the final healing process and can move the finger very well already.If anyone is in need of orthopedic surgery, I highly recommended Dr. Downing.

Human hands are one of the most beautiful, intricate things in the world. They allow us to learn about the world, create, build, communicate, comfort, pray, hold another hand. My experience has given me such an appreciation for hands, these beautiful blessings that built our society 🙏🏼Thank you Dr. Downing for your compassion, care and expertise! Your optimism toward my recovery has been so important in maintaining my hope and facilitating my healing.I had been experiencing the symptoms of a compressed right ulnar nerve for almost a year before seeing Dr. Downing. Some of muscles in my hand had visibly atrophied, I had pain in my elbow, and tingling and numbness on my 4th and 5th digit, and parts of my hand, and forearm. I was no longer able to use chopsticks, typing was becoming increasingly difficult, and it was starting to affect my ability to do so many things I loved. I couldnt even lay on my right arm without feeling discomfort. After months of trying home remedies like anti-inflammatories and nerve gliding exercises, nothing was helping. I then became scared when my hand started to lock up. My sweet boyfriend comforted me and promised that he would find me the best care and he did! I am so grateful that I was placed in the care of Dr. Downing! My case turned out to be severe and gave me realistic expectations for my recovery while still maintaining optimism. Dr. Downing made sure I got surgery as soon as possible and decompressed my nerve on 01/24/2022. He was able to do it endoscopically reducing my healing time from the surgery and reducing the size of the scar that remained after. Now here I am a few months later and I am already feeling increased sensation in my fingers, hand, and arm, and improvements in my mobility, and strength. The tingling sensations is almost gone, my hand no longer locks up, and I can even use chopsticks again!Very grateful for Dr. Downing and his team and will recommend to anyone I know who may need his care.

Absolutely decimated my clavicle on May 1st, 2022 due to a biking accident. I went to Sharp Grossmont the same day and received a sling. I’m beyond happy they recommended I visit Dr. Downing. I got an appointment where Dr. Downing not only was honest about surgery, but demonstrated the procedure to me. He showed me risks that the surgery may entail, but the honesty he displayed about is what really made me appreciate him and his staff. In no way did he put any pressure on me to get surgery and let me know the pros and cons to either getting surgery or not. His excitement when he was showing me the different nerves, blood vessels, procedures and plates that would be used in my surgery let me know he was passionate about his work, he did not have to say a single word, his actions spoke for him and let me realize I had made a great choice.Having never been put under before, I was a bit nervous about anesthesia, but Dr. Downing and his team’s confidence really put me at ease. He reassured me that he’d take care of me right before I went into the operating room, which is huge when it comes to a positive mindset before going under.Surgery went well and I returned for a post-op checkup. Dr. Downing and his incredibly friendly staff addressed all of my concerns and were very patient with me as well. If I happen to break my other clavicle and need surgery, I will most certainly get it done by Dr. Downing, as long as I don’t have to make him really work to get the bone back in place again.The last thing I really need to mention was the amount of time my surgery took. Doctor told me these types of surgeries can be short as 45 minutes, but mine took two hours due to the damage caused as well as some other minor complications with my clavicle. Dr. Downing did not complain about it, in fact he told me it doesn’t matter how long it takes, as long as I got the care I needed. This means the world to me as it can be easy to be seen as a number instead of a person when it comes to healthcare (at least in my past experience), but it was not the case here.I could say a million more positive things, but I will leave it at thank you Dr. Downing and your awesome staff.Sorry if you don’t like mild graphic photos, but this is the reality of what goes on. Rest assured if you decide to use this talented team!

Great experience. I had many visits with other providers telling me to do the same things Id been doing for several years. I am an NP and I know what the problem was .He listened and was not dismissive as many MDs can be. He got right to the issue a quick US to the tendon and injected. I really appreciate his care, courtesy and lovely staff!

I was faced with the real possibility of losing the end of a thumb after a dog attack. I was told in the waiting room that most injuries like mine result in amputation.From the moment I met him in the ER, my fears of being permanently maimed were melted away. His confidence and desire to make my hand whole again gave me the reassurance I was in the right hands. He fully discussed the approach he was going to take and why. He came to me in the O.R. before I was put under to once again explain what he was going to do and said he would also clean and stitch up numerous small wounds on both my hands. I now have complete use of my thumb again with full feeling and no pain.His office staff are all very friendly and hospitable. While he has a very busy office, during my follow up appointments, I always felt he was focused on me and my needs when we were face-to-face and did not rush through my appointment. This tends to cause a bit of a wait beyond the scheduled appointment time, but knowing he wasnt rushing any of his patients and would afford me the same respect makes the wait completely worth it.I will be forever grateful to Dr. Downing. He did an amazing job not only saving my nearly completely severed and broken thumb, once completely healed, no one will even know of the injury.While I hope never to need to see him again, if I ever required orthopedic surgery, he would be my first call. I would direct any friend in need of his expertise without hesitation.

I was referred to Dr. Downing by another surgeon. Dr Downing asked me some questions then looked at my finger (my previously injured body part). I had come to him to discover my treatment options. Dr Downing is a good communicator, and took time to answer my questions despite the office being busy. I will look to his practice for future orthopedic needs.

If you’re reading these reviews, you’re most likely considering surgery for yourself or a family member. As someone who’s recently had shoulder surgery, I thought that sharing my experience may be of interest and value to you.I had an industrial accident where I landed on my elbow from a substantial height that drove my humorous (upper arm bone) into my shoulder (rotator cuff) and snapped 3 of the 4 tendons off the bone, causing them to retract, plus displacing the bicep tendon. Medically, my injury was classified as a “Massive Rotator Cuff Tear”.After the accident and MRI diagnosis I realized two things. First, having it repaired sooner rather than later was critical to having my arm return to normal function. And second, the surgeon I chose would have a significant impact on the success of the operation. Because of my engineering background, I understand the importance of technical skill. Whether building electronic devices, micro-machines, or drilling and reconnecting body parts, skill is the paramount attribute that will define success or failure.With that in mind, I began researching orthopedic surgeons that specialized in upper body repairs, and especially rotator cuff. Like you’re doing right now, I also read numerous online reviews from yelp, Google, HealthGrades, and more. As I read through the reviews, I was looking for just one thing, the technical skill of the surgeon! What I was not interested in was how friendly the staff was, how long the wait was, whether the parking was good or bad, and many other superfluous items. What I wanted was the most competent, expert, and knowledgeable rotator cuff surgeon I could find.Although I live in the very north end of San Diego County, I found my surgeon in the southern part of the County. When I called the office and explained the seriousness of my shoulder injury, I was able to see the doctor the next day. Maybe I was lucky, maybe it was fate, but I very much appreciated the help of the office staff to get me the appointment.Introducing Dr. Kristopher Downing: That initial meeting exceeded my expectations. Dr. Downing reviewed my MRI, explained what he observed and the choices I had, and punctuated this by swiveling toward his computer and showing me ‘on screen images’ of shoulder anatomy, along with various surgical techniques and equipment that could be used. As an engineer myself, I very much appreciated that he took the time to carefully explain the details of the potential operation, including both the positives and potential negatives . . . I had the surgery three weeks later.That was one year ago. (1) Dr. Downing spent over 3 hours ‘in my shoulder’ reattaching the tendons using six anchors into the bone, plus a bicep tenodesis (cutting and re-attaching the bicep tendon). It truly was a ‘massive’ tear. (2) I diligently followed Dr. Downing’s post-surgery instructions and protocols to the letter (3) I went to physical therapy for 3 months as prescribed, and gave it my best efforts (4) I kept a positive attitude from the day I fell to now, knowing that being positive will always produce better results than being negative.Today my shoulder and arm are 100%, just as before the accident! I’m sure there are other excellent surgeons in Southern California and I’m very grateful to have found one of them. Dr. Downing specializes in hands as well as shoulders and I would strongly suggest you meet with him if you need this type of surgery.P.S. I also very much appreciate that Dr. Downing agreed to do my surgery as I’m a healthy 79-year-old who’s looking forward to using that arm for many more years.

Dr. Downing performed bilateral carpal tunnel surgery on me at the end of February 2023. Unfortunately, my experience with him and his office staff has been quite disappointing. Dr. Downing comes across as arrogant and typical of a surgeon. He claimed that everything went well with the surgery, stating that he didnt remember doing it, which was not reassuring.However, my left middle finger is still numb after the surgery, which is concerning. In addition, Dr. Downings office staff seems to be inept. When I was prescribed Hydrocodone for the pain in my finger, the assistant/nurse/medical assistant called in Oxycodone instead, causing further confusion and hassle.Moreover, the office charged me for X-rays that I never had, and despite their claims of explaining what my insurance would cover for a nerve study appointment, they did not provide me with any information on it. When I called to follow up on the referral for the nerve specialist, they gave me the number of the wrong office/doctor. I have been extremely frustrated with the office staff, and dealing with them has been nothing short of work.Edit: 5/23/2023 - Last week, an individual from the office contacted me regarding this review and expressed a desire to discuss it. I returned their call twice, leaving a message on both occasions. Have they called me back? Nope.

Dr Downing performed surgery on my right hand to correct Dupuytrens Contracture that I learned from him is a genetic disorder. The hour and a half surgery was done this past December of ‘22. The Anesthesiologist was also most kind to sit and to chat with me and to kindly gave me his assurance of providing the best possible. I absolutely experienced NO pain whatsoever after this surgery, and did not bother to take any of the pain pills that Dr Downing prescribed for me. All I had was an occasional mild ache on my hand. He kindly set me up with Physical Therapy that I completed a few days ago. All in all it was a Positive experience! Very grateful to have been connected with this Dr with a Positive spirit for this surgery.

I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Downing. After being passed up by a couple of doctors due to the severity of my injury and their scheduling conflicts, I was getting frustrated by the healthcare process and finally got referred to Dr. Downing. He moved his schedule around to get me into surgery a couple days after initial visit. He used cutting edge technology to get me moving right away, since you can lose elbow mobility if you wait. He is a talented surgeon who is excited about what he does and makes patient care a priority. My physical therapist and her colleagues told me over and over again, he would be the guy they would want if they got hurt. I hope I dont have to have surgery again but it is reassuring knowing he is out here in San Diego.

The advice was simple - If you have an upper extremity issue, you need to see Dr. Downing.Dr. Downing provided sound judgment in recommending the repair of my biceps tendon and even called my wife to assure her of the procedures safety. On the day of my surgery, I waited for a few hours for Dr. Downing, and the staff let me know that this can happen because he takes time with all of his procedures - what a wonderful thing to hear pre-surgery!Working with Dr. Downing was an excellent experience from start to finish. Dr. Downing is an incredible surgeon. I was fortunate to be referred to him from the ER when I cut 4 tendons in 2 of my fingers, which was needless to say a traumatic experience. He made me feel instantly at ease and I could tell I was in great hands. He explained every possible outcome prior to surgery and got me in quickly. The surgery went very well and was honestly an overall very pleasant experience. I know that sounds insane to say! I had normal recovery post-op. I’m still in physical therapy working on function of those fingers 3 months later but that’s do be expected. I’m so grateful to have had Dr. Downing as my surgeon and would recommend him to any family member of friend without hesitation.

After a work related injury involving my shoulder and wrist, I went to see Dr. Downing who came highly recommended by other Law Enforcement peers. I could not be more fortunate finding a more competent caring Surgeon. He made the challenges of dealing with The Department of Labor easy for me, while getting all treatments I needed to be approved in a timely manner. Dr. Downing performed shoulder surgery and my shoulder now feels very strong and painless. A few months later he performed a wrist surgery to repair a tendon, which resulted in me, now being pain free and back to work in my Federal Law Enforcement job. I highly recommend Dr. Downing as a top notch surgeon and as a truly caring person. I will miss his personable demeanor and chatting with him at my office visits. Dr. Downing is an excellent surgeon! I had carpal tunnel in both wrists. I am a lawyer and am always typing - so this was a very debilitating injury for me in my career, as well as in my daily life. There were times I couldnt hold a fork to eat! I had trouble playing video games or using any fine motor skills whatsoever. Dr. Downing performed both carpal tunnel surgeries on me and I am happy to report full functionality has been restored to both of my hands! I can type, game, and hold objects with my hands again without worrying Ill drop them! In addition to being a wonderful surgeon, Dr. Downing is extremely down to earth and likable - you can tell he cares about your progress and he takes the time to get to know you. Dr. Downing is pretty remarkable. I came to him with a severely injured wrist and elbow that had sustained multiple complex compound fractures and had failing surgical hardware that was causing me great pain. To say my problems were more than difficult is an understatement. Most doctors took one look at my x-rays and referred me to another. Finally someone got it right! Dr. Downing took the time to read my medical history and discuss it with me at length. He really tried to understand my arduous journey and then meet me right where I was to help me through it. As I continue my rehab and follow ups, I am confident that I have one of the absolute best in my corner and helping me to get back to my best. Office staff is pretty on top things and seriously, Dr. Downing is absolutely next level!

My 20 year old son had a very complicated wrist fracture due to a skateboarding accident . I had no idea what it entailed or what to expect. I had so many fears and concerns but all these feelings subsided when I met Dr. Kristopher Downing. He was polite, honest, reassuring, confident and professional. He was thorough in explaining all details and answering all my questions. I knew my son would be receiving the best care for his surgery, and I was right. After the surgery was completed Dr. Downing sat with me and went over all the details and I could feel he was very passionate about his work. He was able to successfully correct the previous work of another hand surgeon on my left index finger, that had actually worsened my condition.Dr. Downings skill set is wide-ranging. Words are not enough to properly and fully express the gratitude my family has to Dr. Downing. He gave life back to my grandmother by restoring her ability to be herself again. My grandmother is a powerful, independent, giving person who built a family and gave her life to that family, and aged with much difficulty dealing with Parkinson Disease. Even worse, she injured her shoulder to the point of barely being able to use it, and the crippling effect worsened her standard of living. Dr. Downing met her where she was and gave her courage to keep going. He cared for her, showed her exactly what was best for her to be able to get as closely back to where she was, and followed through in taking care of her. I thought modern medicine has evolved but not really. I had to fill in 15 mins worth of paperwork when it could have been done via email ahead of time or simply taken from the referral order of my primary care physician.I then waits 15 mins to be taken into exam room. Waited another 5 mins. Then met with the dr (Nice fella) and his overseas note taker on a iPad stand for 2 mins and need to come back in a few weeks. I was given a tennis elbow brace only to be told it’s 100% more money than buying it on Amazon $50 vs $25. I wasn’t told parking cost anything and the clinics offered no validation or discount. Meh.

I got so lucky when i was referred to Dr. Downing. Let me start off by saying that after surgery when you go to physical therapy and every single one tells you how lucky you were because he is the best hand surgeon in town, well by that time i had already figured it out but they reaffirmed that.This is a doctor that really loves what he does and it is evident. His staff very nice and helpful. Are you seen at exactly your appointment time, every time? No, but there was only once out of a dozen appointments that i had to wait for any length of time and that is because he got hung up in surgery. For my total experience, care and final outcome with my wrist, i would gladly have taken that every time but it only happened once.Finally i cannot say enough good things about this gentleman and his staff. Doctor Downing treated me after a cycling accident where I broke a bone on my hand. He advised the surgery wasn’t needed, only a brace for six weeks while the bone healed, followed by hand therapy and exercises. Wow! I hit a speed bump on my electric bike when I wasnt looking. I went over the handlebars and hit the ground 15 feet away. My right elbow was smashed into 7 pieces. Dr Downing put them back together. That was an amazing bit of surgery. I have 4 screws in the elbow and 3 along my right forearm. I was back lifting weights 3 months later. At 6 months, there is no pain and I have full movement of my arm. I am as strong as I was before the accident. No chronic pain either.

I had a great experience with Dr. Downing. I was having trouble with Carpal Tunnel pain, and I needed CP release surgery on both hands.I saw Dr. Downing via Telehealth for the first meeting, and from that meeting and some previous diagnostic work we were able to schedule the surgery.The procedure offering was excellent! He offered bilateral (both wrists at once) endoscopic surgery. Recovery time is 2-3 weeks, with no restrictions on movement just 2-3 days after surgery. This offering is a game changer from previous options that were often one wrist at a time and 5-6 weeks of recovery.I had the surgery 1 week ago and it really smoothly. Dr Downing communicated all the information clearly and the staff was very helpful.1 week later and I feel great. I cut a tendon on the back of my hand with an angle grinder, and I’m a musician. Not good! Dr. Downing had me in surgery the following week, and now four months after, I’m cleared for all activities, no problems other than the stiffness and swelling you would expect from a major surgery. I am back to playing music at what I consider an acceptable professional level LOL. He also diagnosed a nagging performance-related injury I’ve been dealing with; musicians or athletes, if you’re having repetitive stress issues that can’t be easily diagnosed, here’s your guy, I have two (non hand/wrist-specialist) doctor friends who couldn’t pinpoint the issue. Overall he’s just the right combination of friendly and genuinely concerned, mixed with expertise and focus on getting the results the client needs. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

Doctors Downing and Brereton treated me for a lunate scaphoid disassociation by break. My pre-surgical appointments were handled very professionally, each physician explaining to me what needed to be done, in a language I understood. My surgery was followed up with great aftercare. During all of my post surgical appointment with physical therapist, occupational therapist, and even the insurance provider, all told me how good these doctors were. I really like the staff at the La Jolla location, they are either smiley and willing to help or busy doing their job. I personally, working in Customer Service at a call center, like people who are busy working and not just chatting and not paying any attention to you. There is usually at least one sweet lady that helps in front. Even the customers look and are happy and nice.I see Dr. Brereton in Dr Downing’s office, he is wonderful to work with and always has ideas to alleviate the pain or stress to your injury. Mine is a bad sprain/tendonitis in my left thumb and wrist. I recently I had spinal surgery while dealing with my sprain. Which while using my walker I can’t wear the brace that Dr. Brereton wanted me to wear, reason being I needed to have grip on the walker to not fall.I came in to the office with a walker for mobility and Dr. Brereton had a fabulous idea. He is going to order me an arm rest attachment for the left arm. One of the worst waiting experiences.I did arrive for my appointment 4 minutes late since I initially was in the wrong building.I checked in with my paperwork already filled out then sat down to wait.I was called up for a pre pay for my visit but the credit card machine was down so they wanted cash which I had, but then they didnt have the $5 change to give me back so we agreed to bill or contact me the next day for phone payment.I sat back down to wait. My appointment was at 11:15am. I arrived at 11:19am. Since I entered the wrong building after coming out of the parking garage.I waited for an hour before approaching the front desk and asking if the wait is always this long and she replied no, usually 1/2 hour, and should only be a few more minutes.Well if that was the case I would have been fine since I had felt I might have to wait up to 45 minutes anyway, but after waiting 1 1/2 hours I approached the desk and asked for my paperwork with my personal information back.Only then was I told he was running late due to a surgery. If I was informed of this information when I arrived I would have felt differently. Instead I sat there in a crowded waiting room for an hour and a 1/2 with no explanation until I decided to leave.I cannot speak on behalf of his qualifications, bedside manner or anything else because I did not have the chance to see him. Nor would I go back after this incident.I feel my time is valuable as well and not only did I lose the hour it took me to drive there and back.I lost an hour and a 1/2 waiting and I had to pay $4 for the parking enclosure.I dont understand why the staff wasnt forthcoming about this information upon my arrival.
