Ken built a beautiful deck for our home! We chose to work with Ken because he gave us the impression of someone who is very proud of his work and will not cut corners. While building our deck, Ken was meticulous and detailed oriented and communicated effectively. He gave helpful suggestions along the way. The final product is beautiful and definitely a huge upgrade to our old deck. We 100% recommend Ken to anyone who wants a quality and beautiful deck that will last years to come!

Ken and his team did such a great job replacing our old deck by a larger deck. They were professional, quick and efficient. Even the new deck had passed inspection and the project was ready to be wrapped up, Ken replaced one of the footings for a more perfect line up with the other footings. I cant say enough about Ken and how thankful I am that I found him. I had to rebuild a massive deck all the way down to footings that surrounds three sides of my house and is two story in some places. In addition, it is on the side of a hill and is about 20 off the ground in some places. I have a great western (sunset) view, but one of the challenges is it gets blasted by the afternoon sun. Because of this I wanted it covered.Ken and I designed a replacement using pressure treated wood, trex, and metal railing...and it is AWESOME.Ken is a perfectionist in the best possible way. His work ethic is awesome (he was at my house at 8AM every day to start work), his attention to detail is second to none, and he insisted on using quality products and refused to cut any corners.Bottom line - the resulting deck build is everything we hoped for and is the envy of the neighborhood!I highly recommend Ken for any deck job big or small. After a long search for a deck contractor, we discovered Ken Rector Construction, and we are very glad we found him! Even though his quote was a bit higher than some of his competitors, it was worth every penny because he knew exactly what we wanted and worked with us to accommodate all of our requests. His work with both the HOA and the county made the whole process seamless. Ken and his associate Rich transformed our aging redwood deck to a stunningly beautiful Trex deck. Had the pleasure of being referred to Ken by a neighbor who had their deck built by him. Our deck was pretty old but had good bones so Ken removed the deck boards and installed new Redwood boards that look just beautiful. He and his workers were very professional and easy to work with. Ken went above and beyond and if I have the chance to work with him in the future I would jump at the chance. If you need any kind of deck work Ken is definitely your person.

I can’t say enough good things about Ken Rector’s work. After a frustrating search for contractors, we hired his company to replace our disaster of a front deck. Ken quickly drew up a plan that matched the original layout of the deck and had a building permit issued the next day. I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as he did or take as much pride in his work. We were also happy to learn that Ken is a certified Trex Platinum Contractor.The finished deck is beautiful—and it’s built to last. Unlike the original deck, the new deck and porch roof framing are now fully supported and secured with concrete piers and Simpson hardware. Ken consistently looked after the small details—pre-drilling and countersinking all of the screws and installing the deck treads with hidden fasteners. He didn’t cut corners or use inferior materials. Ken also replaced the rotted siding and trim around the deck, putting in new flashing and even painting the new materials.In short, Ken Rector showed the same care and regard for our home that he would for his own. Thank you, Ken—we couldn’t be happier!

Background: Our original rear patio redwood deck was initially installed in 1980, when our House was first built. As the photographs show in 2023, existing dark brown deck boards were lifting with plank screw fasteners exposed. After an unsuccessful attempt to use of Behr penetrating stain, boards were partially restored to a dark brown. After one year, the Behr stain began to visibly peel off of all components of the deck. Douglas fir staircase railings did not soak in or retain the Behr stain. Last year, due to heavy rain, our adjacent underground basement flooded requiring pumping to remove water transferred through the cement foundation of the home.Project Phases: Phase 1: remove all existing wood components of the existing deck. Phase 2: Excavate deck side of the House foundation, a) paint foundation with active water resistant barrier paint to cover all House foundation areas next to the back deck. Bury white 4 inch piped highly absorbent water accumulators and interconnect piping with an existing roof gutter drain system. Phase 3: Install new TREX Transcend “Tiki Torch” wood grain planks using concealed TREX fastener system complimented by new black metal rust resistant stair case fencing and railing system.We were so fortunate to find KEN RECTOR CONSTRUCTION-AUBURN to engineer, furnish and design our project. Ken Rector Construction competitively bid our deck removal and TREX replacement & completed an underdeck French drain project, developed a comprehensive Project Statement of Work (SOW) and Easy-to-Understand Job Contract, ordered all materials, provided a wonderful three-person thorough construction team (Ken, Rich and Jeremiah) and was available everyday on-site though out the Project. Ken Rector’s Construction Team knew exactly what to do, when and maintained pristine clean-up of the Construction Site every day. Every piece of our old deck was removed by Kens Team. We were able to relax and watch a “Dream Come True” by selecting a highly professional licensed Contractor, who successfully processed and managed our job and successfully passed a Nevada County Building Permit Inspection for TREX Deck & Stairwell Replacement & new Concealed French Drain Construction. Short version:The reviews are real. Ken is a true professional with an incredible work ethic and impeccable eye for detail. Hes not the cheapest but hes absolutely the best value.Long version:We are doing a complete renovation of a 40-year old custom home in Apple Hill and the deck was our first major undertaking. I confess, we had interviewed Ken on the first round of contractors (and really liked him) but foolishly got dazzled by another contractor that had big promises and too-good-to-be-true pricing... and it led to constant frustration and an entire year of lost time.After living in our home for two years, we realized that the deck was the anchor-piece and we wanted to do it right. The existing 10x30 deck was failing so we decided to double the size to 20x30. We wanted to keep it a minimalist design with the fewest footings and beams possible. Its a complicated landscape with several converging slopes making it difficult for heavy equipment to work. At the highest point, the deck is 25 above the grade below. Ken came in with a plan that worked perfectly.We already had drawings and a permit when Ken re-entered the job. That said, if youve done a large project before, plans cant account for all the detail pieces that come up, material delays nor the unexpected work that needs to happen once you start removing existing panels and structure. At every point, Ken listened to what we wanted to do, solved the problem and kept additional costs reasonable where others may see it as an easy opportunity to gouge the customer.If you hire Ken, you will see him at every step of the process from first estimate to final walk-through. Your job will be the only one hes working on. Hell be at your house every day with one or two of his assistants. Every time a question arises, hell bring it up to you, lay out the options and let you decide which is best. He truly places your satisfaction over timelines.I could go on and on...In a world where people over-promise and under-deliver, Ken walks different. Hes not going to dazzle you with fancy trucks and slick talk but he will give you a fair price and hit the ball out of the park where it really counts. Our two decaying decks have been hanging over our heads for years. We fielded quotes from numerous contractors and are so fortunate to have discovered Ken! He was on time to the estimate appointment, courteous, responsive to my concerns, and incredibly knowledgeable. He quickly came back with the most reasonable estimate for labor and a start date shortly after signing, which was imperative as the tall deck was at risk of collapse. We chose Trex Transcend, and Ken was fantastic with design ideas. He worked tirelessly, rain or shine, and his craftsmanship and attention to detail is second to none - every joist waterproofed, every cut meticulous, every seam as tight as can be. Ken was incredible!! I am a extremely particular and a perfectionist type of person… Ken excelled in every category. Framing of the deck was precise and level… Ken actually had me hold the string line just to make sure it was. All his cuts and seams are spot on. All screw holes are measured out for spacing and predrilled. Craftsmanship is everything to me, being on time, being there when you say you are going to be there, and completing the job as we discussed… is also important. The steps to our deck were uneven and the supports underneath were damaged. Ken poured concrete, reused our decking material and installed new hand rails that he cut out of wood. All this during this heat wave at a very reasonable rate. Very professional and would ask him again for future jobs. See below for before and after pictures.

If youre doing a deck or stairs, you will be thrilled with Kens work and attitude. Make sure to get multiple quotes so that you realize how good of a deal he is offering you (he was over 30% less than another quote we got!). Not only did he work fast and for long hours, he was in tune with all of the detail elements of the job (and dealt well with my perfectionism). The finished product is magnificent! He also went above and beyond with accommodating us (working around our toddlers nap time, bringing his own green waste bin to help us with a tree we had to trim for the job, going through piles of lumber to get us the best materials that will last for decades to come). Ken Rector Construction is the best kept secret in Auburn for decks - schedule with him soon before word gets out!

Ken did an absolutely great job building a landing and stairs from our patio slider-door down to the patio! The steps are TREX with beautiful metal hand railing. Ken did quality work for a fair price, was great at communicating, flexible to fit our schedule and on time. Ken just finished our AMAZING two story deck on sloped yard! He was diligent in working on our deck until it was completed and only took a few months. We saw him everyday and he became like family. Ken did a FANTASTIC job on the replacement of our old and rotting deck. The deck was over the garage and required permitting and engineering. Ken did all of the work with the County and the engineer and communicated with me every step of the way. He finished on time, on budget, and we could not be more thrilled with the results. We had an upper deck support post that needed to be replaced. Ken gave us a very reasonable quote and said he would get back to us in about a month. I didn’t hold my breath…so many people never follow through, but Ken contacted us a month after the quote and was out to repair our deck within a week after that. The work was done within a day and was done to a very high standard, plus… the post area was left free of any construction debris. I would certainly call upon Ken again.

Ken did a fantastic and very meticulous job of finishing our deck project after we had to let go of our original contractor for many reasons. He was extremely professional throughout the project first correcting all the mistakes the previous contractor created. He quoted a price at the beginning and even though there was probably more work than he anticipated stuck with the original quote. His work ethic and follow through was something I hadnt experienced in many years. Every day before he left he cleaned up the work sight very thoroughly. Frankly if I could give him 10 stars out of 5 I would. Theres only one person I would call for my construction needs and that would be Ken Rector.
