Natalie is a tremendous teacher. My 11 year old daughter has been taking piano lessons from her for a year and a half and has made incredible progress. I honestly can’t believe the difference between her recital piece last year compared to this year. It’s like she’s been playing for 10 years! Natalie’s personality and energy are unmatched - she meets my daughter where she’s at and pushes her skills and commitment without my kid even realizing it. Most impressively, my daughter loves her and comes away from every lesson wanting us to sign her up for an additional instrument (“Can I also take voice lessons? Can I also learn guitar?”) - lol. If that’s not a great music teacher, I don’t know what is!

I havent performed since high school many years ago, and decided to give it a shot again with the Join the Band adult bands program. John is an amazing band leader and led the way for our rock band to perform at one of the Join the Band quarterly concerts recently. The performance went great and it was super fun! I highly recommend Join the Band for adults that want toget back into playing and performing music in front of a live audience. Its also a great way to improve your playing skills. John is an excellent music teacher.

Natalie is a wonderful piano teacher! Our son loves his lessons with her at JTB…we never have to push him to go, ever…he’s always looking forward to it and I think that is due to the kind, patient way Natalie teaches. It is also wonderful to see her sharing her gift with the world by writing a musical that ran in NY! No small accomplishment! She is a passionate artist who clearly loves sharing her gift with her students. We’d give 10 stars for Natalie and Join the Band if we could!

Best place for kids and adults to learn and grow in their musical journey! My son has been with Join the Band (JTB) since he was 5! He started learning the drums and is still learning with amazing instructors like Mike & Jake! My son enjoys music and is also learning the piano!My daughter is now 5 and she just started piano lessons with Natalie, who is amazing with kids!It’s been truly amazing to see my kids develop a passion for music and how much they have learned. What an amazing place filled with supportive, positive people! I recently tried their adult band program and I am so glad that I did. I had a great time, met several wonderful people, blew the dust off my instrument and put it back in use. Special shout out to band leader Ryan whose talent, encouragement, and positivity helped put the whole experience on another level. I cannot recommend it enough... if you are on the fence, Id just do it. Seriously....go for it.

I’ve had a great experience both with my band leader Ryan and my bass teacher Rosh. Ryan’s always open to new ideas and always helpful with any questions I have. Rosh is always ready to help me learn any song and can explain and break down complicated concepts and lines really comprehensively.

My daughter has been taking drum lessons at Join the Band for almost 7 months and its been fantastic. Jake is an awesome teacher as well as being an amazing drummer himself. He makes the lessons fun and educational all while being patient and inspiring. The lessons he puts together really keeps her motivated and focused to practice at home. I wish Join the Band was around when I was a kid! The office staff is very friendly and welcoming and ready to answer any questions, I might have.John and Lynn have really put together something special here!

Taylor has really helped our son find his voice. He loves his one on one sessions with him. It really helps him fine tune the songs he performs with his band.And Ryan his band teacher has been wonderful working with my son and his friends over the past few years. Ive been participating in the adult program at Join The Band since 2009. Ive had a wonderful experience and have improved much as a musician. Join The Band also has a great youth program and is a great place for a young musician to gain experience working with other young musicians and performing with a band on a major music venue stage. All their band leaders are fantastic musicians and they have a great teaching staff.

Join The Band is fantastic. Ive had the chance to live out my dreams of being a rock star! The teachers and staff are great and the experience has expanded my skills as a musician and allowed me to share music with my family and friends in ways I would not otherwise be able to do. I joined in 2014 and it has been my Tuesday night hang out ever since... My young son has played a couple of sessions and loves it, as well. The atmosphere is friendly and encouraging. Hi. Just writing to post about my sons Join the Band teacher, Taylor. He is a fantastic band leader but more than that he inspires the young musicians to be their best and try new things. He also notices their strengths and encourages them to improve on them, by getting them to also notice their own potential and want to be their best. My son Andrew says, He knows what hes doing in each song and always recognizes exactly how to correct even the smallest error. He has a great positive attitude and it just feels good to be around him. Every time I pick my son up from his class he says, That was a great session! He comes home enthusiastic about his songs and happy to practice and we can definitely thank Taylor for that positive and inspiring vibe.

I cant overstate the impact that JTB had on me, both as a musician and as a person. John is knowledgable, patient, experienced, and most of all, kind. He gave my passion structure. Practicing at home is one thing, but working with others as a cohesive unit is entirely different. As a professional musician, I can unequivocally say that my teenage years at Join The Band left a lasting impact. Beyond Join The Band having a great team of caring and very well versed, musical instructors, they provide a learning environment that is essential for musicians, especially ones that are young and developing. It can be hugely beneficial to study privately, but it can also be argued that its just as important to learn how to communicate and interact with other musicians. Not only does Join The Band provide a great studio rehearsal space where one can share the process of learning and performing music with others, it provides anyone with the opportunity to perform the music they love on stage at a classic L.A. venue. When the stage curtains go up, everything changes. Youre not practicing in your bedroom anymore, but are having to deal with everything that might come with a live performance: the exhilaration, the nervousness, the whole nine yards. The potential pitfalls of performing live are almost inevitable. Learning how to maintain composure and deal with such things in the heat of the moment throughout ones formative, musical years can be invaluable. Really enjoying the program at Join the Band in Sherman Oaks. Trent is an amazing band leader! He understands each of us as musicians and helps us to learn our parts and rock out and have fun! I play both rhythm and lead guitar at performance time.Im taking guitar lessons with David. The dude is a jazz blues sophisticate. Not just learning the same old minor pentatonic blues, but hes turning me on to some dominant seventh scales with chromatic tones thrown in à la Josh Smith. I love it!

We found Join the Band over the summer and did several weeks of band camp. Currently enrolled in their regular weekly band program. Tried one of JTB competitors even after friends of ours told us not to for good reasons. JTB focuses on making a strong band. The instructors and leaders help you become a better singer, guitar player, drummer...musician. They do this by a evaluation process before they even assign you to a band to know what level you are. The great thing is, you may enter at one level but you are definitely leaving at a level above because the instructors know how to take you there. As I mentioned the other program we tried at a competitor didnt even do an evaluation and then had us play songs more simplified while rotating instruments. If you are serious at being a musician and want to grow, Join the Band is the place to go for guitar lessons and rock band classes!

I joined an adult band for Spring 2022 and had a super positive experience. After one try-out with John, I was placed in a 4-piece band. Our band leader Trent, did an awesome job of creating an atmosphere that was both fun and conducive to learning. Ive been playing with JTB off and on since the fall of 2000, and its been a great experience. Ive played gigs with JTB at The Baked Potato, Cozys, The Whiskey, The Roxy, The Federal Bar, Amazon, The Mint, and other places(at The Whiskey, it was exciting for me to play in the same place where Cream and X had played!). JTB is staffed with patient, well educated music teachers who provide us students with charts, lyric sheets, and all the gear we need. Ive seen it go from when it was just John teaching by himself in one room at what was once Ultimate Rehearsal Studio on Oxnard Street, to him taking over that facility, and then finally moving over to the current studios on Van Nuys Blvd. with an expanded staff. I just wish JTB had been around when I was a teenager! It wouldve been an immense help with getting experience playing drums in a band. Though primarily a drummer, Id taught myself to play guitar, so JTB also became an outlet for me to get experience playing guitar in a band. Its a great place for kids to learn but its also great for adults who love to play but may not have the time to commit to playing in a band. Or if one wants to do both - Ive played with JTB at the same time I was playing in a band outside of it. The more playing done, the better. Im glad JTB has been there.

My child takes drum lessons from Zak and is also in a band led by Taylor. Zak has guided him into incredible progress on an instrument he’d never played before. He loves his lessons with Zak and is getting really good! At first, my kid didn’t want to join an actual band. I was so happy to have it during the pandemic and now being back in person is just the best. John is always attentive to all the classes and the teachers rock! I’ve had 2 kids participate in Join the Band and it’s been a wonderful experience. Most kids (and adults) don’t get to experience playing with other musicians until they’re somewhat accomplished at their instruments. My son has been doing the rock band program at Join the Band in Sherman Oaks for several years now and we couldnt be happier with this program. The instructors who lead the bands are all very experienced and have an abundance of patience working with kids. There is a calm, laid-back atmosphere that pervades the whole place, which makes for a comfortable, non-competitive environment. At the same time, students are consistently challenged and encouraged to take risks and expand their musical repertoires, while learning how to be part of a rock band and what that entails. My son attended programs at School of Rock for several years prior to his Join the Band experience, and while I don’t want to say anything negative about that other program, I will say that Join the Band is far superior, in my opinion. One major difference is that the kids are very carefully and selectively placed into bands that fit their age and ability levels, and once there, they play throughout the entire rehearsal. At School of Rock, kids are often placed in a large group where they may sit around for several hours and just play on a few songs, because the kids are all taking turns. Join the Band may have just as many kids enrolled in their program, if not more, but rather than jam a bunch of them into one big class where they have to take turns playing, they just create more bands to accommodate the number of kids who enroll. Bands meet once a week for an hour, which again - though I hate to compare - is a lot more convenient than the three-hour band classes my son sat through at S.O.R. (where he played just a fraction of the time, and did not learn much at all). Rehearsal schedules are based on the availability of the other kids in the band, which is also great. Most importantly, my son LOVES this program. He is a fairly serious musician for a 12 year-old – hes a multi-instrumentalist, has been playing drums since he was three, and also plays in his school jazz band. But despite having other musical outlets and hobbies, he always looks forward to his Join the Band rehearsals. I also feel that the positive atmosphere of Join the Band has helped my rather shy son become more confident, and that confidence has permeated his everyday life. There is almost nothing better than feeling safe and supported while doing something you love, which for him is making music. Thank you, Join the Band!

Update: Our sons teacher Jim was incredibly responsive during Covid shutdowns to make the move to online classes. He has been so flexible and has cultivated a relationship that our son treasures. (Thanks for putting up with his energy, Jim!) Hes why guitar lessons have continued unabated even as we get back to school and unpredictable sports practices.Our boy has been taking private guitar lessons since he was eight, so a couple years now. Join the Band is the best place to learn music. We have been playing here for more than 15 years. I learned guitar and mandolin as an adult. My kids have taken lessons on piano, guitar, ukelele and flute. They have some of the best instructors around and really tailor the lessons to the needs of the students. They help get the kids playing songs they like the hear and help foster a love of music. Beyond the music though, they help the kids become more confident in their playing ability. We have had impromptu recitals in the lobby to help get the kids prepared for an audition. That is just the lessons. The bands are great. I joined Join The Band many years ago when I was fairly new at guitar. They pair you up with musicians around your skill level, learn several songs, and you get a gig at a nice venue. My experiences with John as a teacher and music muse for my Son and myself are all incredibly positive. He is so very good a gently guiding young people toward their goals with encouragement and solid training that is disguised as fun. I have watched him turn utter chaos into great, heartfelt music, one young band member at a time. It takes a certain talent to be able to take command in a way that is caring and not intimidating. His private guitar lessons are priceless too. While my son was learning to play at about age 10, I realized that I wanted to learn some things that had mystified me about guitar playing for my entire life. I Joined the Band when I was thirteen years old. This program made my teenage years extremely rewarding as a young musician. I can still feel my heart racing when getting ready to go on stage and perform at Cozys, the Knitting Factory, and the Roxy in Hollywood. Nothing compares to that warm and exciting feeling. I was a join the band student for well over five years. It was some of the most formative music lessons that I took part in growing up. Sure, some of the bands are less than professional, but some are absolutely amazing. My two boys began performing with Join the Band 7 years ago. My oldest son is now a student at Berklee College of Music and my youngest son just played his last gig before going off to college in 2 weeks. The owner, John Mizenko, developed this incredible program where he groups musicians of all skill levels into rock bands who in 8-12 weeks are ready to perform live, in front of an audience at venues like: Whiskey a go go, The Roxy, Catalina bar, Federal bar, and Sagebrush Cantina. Different than just weekly music lessons, rehearsing together with other musicians teaches students how to work together under the guidance of one of the JTB instructors or band leader. All of the instructors and staff are wonderful people. Not only great teachers but also great musicians. The studio is custom designed by John himself and houses individual rooms for private lessons as well as large studios for band rehearsal. All are acoustically sound. Thank you to all the instructors and staff at Join the Band, I truly enjoyed all the years of entertainment. My family will miss coming.

I discovered Join The Band during my last year of middle school through a close friend who had already been a student there for a little while. I joined the jazz combo that the program provided and this was the best vehicle I could have asked for at the time as I was preparing to audition as a jazz bassist for admission into the program at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA). I wound up going to LACHSA as a sophomore in high school and was more than readily prepared for the intense afternoons of combo and big band rehearsals there because of all the rehearsals and performances in which I took part at Join The Band. John Mizenko was an incredible instructor who turned me on to a lot of great music and who always succeeded in getting the combos I played in sounding like a solid unit/band. Having been a professional musician (both touring and in-town) in Los Angeles for just about ten years I often look back on the incredible start to my musical journey that Join The Band provided.

He originally started by taking singing lessons and then later bass lessons and continues to play in the rock bands. JTB has been an environment where he has been able to learn and explore his musical interests and to do so at his own pace and comfort level. Join the Band is Hands down the best music performance program available for aspiring musicians. Having two sons that are interested in music performance, we have tried them all! No program can compete with this one... which is why after going through so many, we have stuck with Join the Band for four years and counting. It all starts at the top and Program Director John Mizenko has created something very unique here. The program manages to be both fun and serious. Rehearsal and lessons are efficient and effective, fun but focussed. The show days are amazing, from The Whiskey, to The Roxy, to The Mint, or Federal Bar, the staff makes the performances so special and it is always a blast to see family and friends joining in to support the efforts of the kids... ours, and all the other amazing children taking part. Looking back, one of the most influential experiences I’ve had in my life was my time at Join The Band. My son was in JTB bands for 6 years (guitar/drums/vocals); as he got older, he also helped mentor younger bands, so Ive seen a lot of kids go through this program. Whats special about JTB is that the kids dont just grow as musicians - they grow as human beings. They learn teamwork and responsibility along with music theory and musicianship; they develop confidence and self-esteem along with a sense of harmony and rhythm. And they learn how to give, whether performing for community benefits or just learning to be generous with the spotlight. My son really found himself at JTB - experiences playing in JTB bands led him to an internship studying how music affects the brain and to become an Associate Composer for the LA Philharmonic; last year he helped develop and teach a curriculum of music therapy in Bolivia; and now hes majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Jazz at Princeton University. I honestly believe Join the Band had a lot to do with all of that, and I will forever be grateful to the entire JTB family.

Its been a while since Ive been at Join the Band, but I wanted to share a little story that I hope youd like. A couple of weeks ago, my family rented out an RV and drove up the west coast, from LA to Seattle. While we were in Seattle, we stopped by a small town called Renton, WA. Now, its not known for much, other than being the birthplace of some nobody guitarist named Jimi Hendrix or whatever. All jokes aside, my dad and I both felt obligated to pay the late guitar god a visit at his hometown memorial, and I saw that guitarists had brought their picks and placed them on the memorial in tribute. Being the guy that I am, I took out my wallet, snagged one of my picks, and I thought of you, Jeff, Ryan, Rosh, and all of the people who made me fall in love with playing music in the hopes that someday, someday, Id finally nail that gosh darn Mitch Mitchell drum fill in Manic Depression, or learn just ONE lick from Little Wing without messing up. Join the Band combines individual music instruction with a vigorous Rock Band program that enables students of the guitar, bass, drums, piano, and vocals to jump right into rehearsing and performing with other students in similar age and ability levels. By giving music students a vehicle to directly apply the musical skills acquired in their individual lessons, Join the Bands students are able to receive a focused program of instruction specifically tailored to their ensemble experience.As a former teacher at JTB and other lesson studios throughout Los Angeles, I have seen first hand how these programs are effective specifically because they put the instrument of study into a social environment where the motivation to succeed is driven more by peer-affirmation rather than teacher-pressure.

My experience with Mike my drum teacher has been so amazing! I learned some new techniques like fills, beats and rudiments. I also learned about new music I had never heard of before and really liked it. He is also so silly when he teaches and makes it fun.

Join the Band holds a special place in my heart, as a student, a teacher, and performer of music. There are few other places I have ever been to that prepare you for a future in popular music better than here. I was a former student at JTB and I went on to graduate from the Jazz Studies program at USC. I can definitively say that the education I received at JTB was instrumental (haha) in my ability to succeed in music school.On top of that, the atmosphere is welcoming to new and experienced musicians, ushering them on a path to have fun and make music together. The expertise of the band instructors is astonishing (graduates of USC, Berklee College of Music, CSUN). There are also many great private lesson teachers who can help you on your specific instrument. I cant recommend JTB enough.

John and everyone on his Join the Band crew are awesome. Its more than just music lessons, its about being a part of a rock band and experiencing what its like to perform. They were awesome at our event and all of the students were indeed rock stars!

John Mizenko, Ryan, Leilani and everyone at JTB were awesome for my daughter. They shared, taught, encouraged, supported and rocked out with her for 4 years, during which not only did she develop her musical talents but also, and maybe more importantly, learned how to be on stage with the lights on her, in front of a crowd and perform, an important life skill. Oh yeah, and now she appreciates the same music I do!
