Humemodern is amazing!! Alfie restored both of my Eames Lounge Chairs. The black one is a perfect 1961 example that has been in my family since new and can be seen in Case Study House 25. The white one was to be as Alfie described it More Fun and it is. I love both of them and couldnt be happier with the designs, quality of materials and the workmanship. Alfie is a true craftsman. I will be bringing many other pieces to Humemodern in the future for more of Alfies magic touch.

My grandfather passed down a 1978 Eames lounge chair that had suffered a shock mount failure that caused one of the wings on the seat back to crack. I found Hume Modern through a local Herman Miller dealer, and after a quick back and forth with Alfie, decided do to go with their services. It was scary to send such a valuable heirloom across the country but Alfie was in contact throughout the process and when we got the chair back the restoration was incredible.

I needed to get my Eames chair restored and found Hume Modern on the internet as a company that could do the work. Im located in the middle of the US I was very nervous about sending my chair to Hume Modern since Ive never visited their storefront or seen their work in person. However by checking out their work on Instagram and having conversations with Alfie through email, I learned that this company is the real deal and Id be in good hands. Alfie crushed all those worries when he promptly started work on the chair and sent me some pictures. The work was exactly as I hoped it would be. The chair was promptly shipped back to and went off without a hitch by a professional shipping company he recommended.For all those who are needing their furniture repaired and do not live in California, I can say that my experience was great! Working with Alfie/Hume Modern was a pleasure. He was spot on with the estimates and was honest with the work needing to be done. We inherited a beautiful rosewood mid-century modern chair and ottoman, but the cushions needed replacing. We have a pretty decent upholstery shop here in our town, but I knew we needed to have the best craftsman for this job. After doing a bit of research, and a few interviews, we chose Hume Modern. Alfie was wonderful to work with. The new cushions arrived yesterday and they are absolutely perfect! We now have a perfect heirloom to pass down a few more generations. My 75 year old father tasked me with figuring out how to make his 60+ year old rosewood eames lounge chair like new without completely breaking the bank. I contacted 5 different places across the country and sent pictures of the splitting seat and ottoman cushions asking for suggestions. We wanted to do right by the chair, which is a loved heirloom, so we were hesitant at first by Hume, because it seemed like going with their cushions required a leap of faith that the new leather would match the patina of the intact leather enough to not look weird. Alfie assured us that their cushions are as true to the original intentions and should be perfect for swapping right in.We ultimately decided to go with Hume who was originally recommended to us by a trusted mid century dealer, and because their prices delivered for what we needed were about 15-20% less than other restorers we were speaking with. As you can see, the cushions looks great and we are so happy we made the leap of faith. The leather is buttery soft, and has an almost identical finish. I recommend their products.

This Eames lounge chair and ottoman had a prominent place in my father-in-laws home for over 40 years. Unfortunately, the leather eventually become worn through and cracked, and last year sadly the wood split by the shock mount.Very pleased to find Hume Modern - impressive craftsmanship, cant tell there was ever damage to the panel. My wife found these two Saarinen tulip arm chairs in a little old-stuff shop that went out of business about a year later. I kid her that its because she got them for a steal.Of course they didnt look like this. I dismantled them completely, sand blasted the bases and had them powder coated in the original white. I took the shells to my friend Dan at International Auto collision in Culver City and had him prep/prime/paint/clear coat to match the powder coated bases. (I knew Dan could match anything so I started with the powder coat as I wasnt so confident in that shops ability.)For 5 or so years after all that we continued to use the ugly cushions that the previous owners had made. Finally I decided to get real cushions.I took the old ones to Alfie who immediately told me to stick the old ones and instead give him actual measurements from each of the chairs. Based on those measurements and his encyclopedic knowledge of this stuff HumeModern made two perfect-fit cushions which I believe to be better than the original OEM cushions. We love them.Highly recommend HumeModern for any modern furniture remanufacturing.

I sent a 1970s Falcon chair to humemodern for restoration. The chair has a multi-panel canvas sling that needed to be recrafted and I couldn’t find anyone interested in doing the work here at home. Had a rather large Danish mid-century modern bed repaired and restored here at Hume Modern. Originally, I tried to find a place to repair it around town, and that was a difficult and convoluted process. When I found Hume, Alfie the owner confidently knew exactly what to do with it. I have a 1977 rosewood Eames lounge chair that had the shock mounts incorrectly repaired in 1990 by the company which originally made the chair. I finally decided to refurbish the chair and sent the seat pan and lumbar support to HumeModern. They replace all the shock mounts perfectly. I then replaced all the leather and refinished the wood. It looks almost new and feels as good as new, in large part thanks to the fine work of Alfie at HumeModern. I strongly recommend Alfies work.

Over the years, Ive had Hume repair Eames plywood chairs that had holes drilled in them, and the holes magically disappeared. It was like witchcraft! They rebuilt a Nelson Sling Sofa, and most recently, got a full upholstery set for an Eames lounge chair and ottoman. The work is absolutely first rate. Given the existence of Hume, there is no excuse to have damaged or beat up Herman Miller furniture about your home. Also, Alfie is responsive and always meets his commitments. I had the shells of some original Arne Jacobsen Egg and Swan chairs, with all the upholstery missing and the foam badly damaged. I shipped the items and when I got them back I was blown away—perfect restoration of the chairs! The Egg Chair was done in dark leather per Alfie’s recommendation, and the Swan in orange wool. I was super impressed by the attention to detail and the workmanship. For example, the Egg Chair was restored with a single piece of leather for the back—often knock offs will have a seam down the back. I’m really impressed. Unfortunately the same mounts failed again but Alfie offered to redo the repair free of charge despite being beyond the 5 year warranty period. This time the original mid section mounts were replaced as well so I hope the chair now performs as it was designed now having 4 new shock mounts installed. Alfie appears to involve himself personally in every project whether large or small, which to me is a sign of a business that stands behind its work.

Alfie repaired the shock mounts on my chair a few years ago, but it was damaged when my home burned in the Woolsey fire in November. Luckily the chair didnt burn, but the shock mount was broken and the chair was covered in debris. I returned the chair to Alfie to repair again and about a week later I got a call that the chair was ready. In original, older chairs, vulcanized rubber joining pieces harden over time, ultimately failing and leading to unintentional rapid disassembly (breakage.) If you dig around a bit on the Hume web site, youll find one of their secrets: they have a U.S. based supplier custom-manufacture replacement vulcanized rubber components for the chair. I was in the process to get estimate on a repair of 7 Herman Miller - 1973 Eames Chairs. Sent photos, I got a very fast response with a very detailed estimate to replace all upholstery on chairs. My idea is to keep the original upholstery and just try to fix/replace the látex foam rubber in the interior of the chairs. I just asked if would be possible to do so. Humemodern recently restored an Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman that my parents had used daily for more than fifty years. The plywood panels were dinged, nicked, scratched, faded, and forlorn; the leather cracked and the cushions worn out; the shock mounts finished. They installed new side shock mounts at the correct angle. The results are gorgeous and impeccable in every detail. Bit of a puzzle: Barbara Barry / Baker scallop edged table. Bought original 18 yrs ago. Sometimes that 1 piece in a set suffers all the slings and arrows. If a guest will leave a nice wet glass somewhere. You know. Had a Eureka moment: if Alfie & Co can restore mid-century. Quote, repair time, easy. Result: better than I could have asked. Please be gentle with Alfie & Co. They are treasured crafts people we want to keep happy and among us for a long time to come.

Hume Modern is pretty much the only company that does authorized work on Eames Chairs. They are not inexpensive, but the proper care for this type of chair is the only way to go.

Bought a $100 replacement part that did not match. As supposed professionals they should know there are multiple versions across years and note that. When I inquired about returning, thier response was prompt but sassy and rude:“Sorry All sales final. No returns.Cheers”Would not take my chances with them on any future parts or work.

Great service, took in a chair with a (completely) broken arm. He fixed it in under 5 minutes and gave it a full check up/tune up while it was on the operating table. Fast, friendly and INCREDIBLY reasonably priced... doesnt get much better than that.Im not saying I would break my chair again just so I can go back... but Ill be back the next time Im in need of quality furniture service.
