Staying here was awesome. Initially, the location is what led to the booking of this hotel. My family and I were visiting a loved one at a nearby cemetery. However, after staying at The Cary House for a few nights, it clearly became the right choice. The calm, inviting lobby decorated with antiques greets you when you walk in as well as a lone hotel associate for check-in & general questions. Take the stairs or the old elevator to your floor. The choice is yours! The rooms are clean, theres generally a small kitchenette and the cable with flat screen televisions was a nice touch. The balcony on the second floor was wonderful, and a nice escape from the room to people watch. If the door to the balcony is locked, kindly ask the front desk associate to unlock it for you. I would absolutely stay here again.

Came into town for a wedding and cannot say enough about this delightful hotel. First, the after hours check in. I felt terrible that we forgot the instructions when we got in at 3 am but the attendant was so patient and pleasant helping us get in. Its a GORGEOUS historic space. What some reviewers may see as run down is in fact the dedicated preservation of a historical space. Every inch of the space lent to the nostalgia of living in a bygone era.It is also the perfect place to stay if you want to experience all of the unique and interesting shops on the street.The ONE thing you might not like is it gets a little loud outside on the weekends with the youngsters partying at the bars. It could be tough on the light sleepers but minimal in comparison to all the other benefits.Love love love this place!!

Fantastic stay! The Gentleman working at night was amazing going out of his way to help me check in when I missed check in time! There were two Ladies behind the desk at different times in the day and they were both very helpful and took a lot of time to get things done for me! I really appreciate the three staff members that were working during my February 21st until March 7th I believe it was stay… Thanks guys for your patience and help! Truly above and beyond!

First time visiting this wonderful establishment. The employees were awesome and helpful at any questions you may ask. Plus, it was close to clubs and bars in walking distance to a venue that was hosting friends Birthday Party she was having at Green Room plus the music was Awesome. And the appearance of the hotel Awesome the rooms great and the historic history of the hotel very interesting like ghost wondering around didnt see or hear anything but it would have been cool if I did. Plus, the atmosphere of the hotel I just have to say the Lobby was Amazingly Beautiful.

First, the hotel smells horrible. It smells like 200 year old mold.Second, the rooms are shabby. That would be charming and cute, if...Third and most important. They double charge you. Ive been trying to get a refund of the double charge for almost 3 months. They dont return your calls, and theres never a manager available when you call.And Im not the only one. If you read the Yelp reviews, youll see 10 or so other people saying that theyve been double charged and cant get a refund.What manager is pocketing all those double charges?Im on the verge of suing.

Historic says it all. But really the worst part was trying to navigate the heater and AC. One wall is for Heat and another for Air, but you don’t really know if it’s cooling or heating. Stood under vents and didn’t notice any difference. Anyway if you like historic places you’ll like Carry House. Rumor has it there are ghosts, but I was so tired I wouldn’t have cared either way. Can’t speak on the service because we self served as we arrived late.

This is a historic hotel. It definitely could use some freshening. But it has charm and style, and I would choose that over the bland soulless boxes that hotel chains build all over the U.S. Best of all, its right downtown, just steps from great restaurants, bars and shops. Highly recommended.

No hot water in some rooms...211+Asked for room service, the room was dirty. We did not get service, ever.There was no remote for the TV. Asked for replacement...nope.The front desk closes early and opens late.Whoever owns this hotel should be ashamed, not full of themselves.I do not recommend this place.

8:30pm at the door to check in. It was closed. After waiting 10 minutes in the cold the lady came down in her socks. Clearly we interrupted her watching Netflix or whatever. She was so annoyed we were there. Totally rude. She put us on the fourth floor and then acted annoyed that we asked where an elevator was. We found our room with no help from her. It’s a super cute vintage room which we were thrilled to be in. Until we sat on the bed, which sucked they give you two pillows. One is so big it would be good for sitting up in bed to eat, the other is so flat a flat earth we would be envious. We’ve stayed in a lot of hotels and don’t complain about much in general. Honestly it’s like a hotel that doesn’t really want to do the job. Just Give Up! Or switch management and invest in some beds and pillows. I’m pretty sure it’s not that hard.

Night clerk / manager was very nice. The rooms were clean in the bathrooms well stocked. It was like stepping back in time at this hotel. Loved the old fashioned and the antique atmosphere. The bed was a bit firm for my liking, but Im sure a lot of people a firm mattress I would highly recommend

Very authentic piece of history. It was much like visiting a museum. We stayed in rooms 309 and 307. Lots of memorobilia to look at in the lobby. A uniform worn by one of the employees that haunts the place is on display in the lobby. Apparently he was stabbed and killed by a guest whose wife he made a pass at. We rode the antique elevator which is one of the two oldest operating elevators in the country. In the middle of the night my husband woke up and there was a strong smell of a person with strong body odor (it wasnt us) that passed through the room. Nothing else spooky happened though. We enjoyed the old main street area shops and saloons. If youre looking for something fancy and modern this is not for you. If youd like to experience the old west and its style of accommodations look no further. We enjoyed our stay and the staff were friendly and helpful. The place definitely has a vibe and you get a sense that a lot had happened in the place. Its a one of a kind experience is highly recommend to a history buff.

The hotel is old and historic and has it’s charm ! You will start experiencing it’s history right as you enter the main door.The rooms were clean but could definitely use a little maintenance ! There was a certain smell everywhere- something which gives you a feeling that you are in a quite old place. When we stayed the elevator wasn’t working and we had a lot of luggage, so carry that up the stairs wasn’t fun. The parking lot is away from the hotel and you would not feel safe leaving your stuff in the car.One other problem was it was noisy. We could hear everyone climbing up the stairs talking. Now that could be just because our room was right next to the stairs. You can definitely stay here for the old historic charm and enjoy the nice town !

Got a very lame response from management - as you can see below - didnt bother to address any of the issues...so, MANAGEMENT - what do you have to say about the issues i addressed (and other reviews) - any body gonna do anything?? or are you just going to continue running a slum hotel??pros: beautiful, funky old historic hotel, fun town, walk across the street or up and down the street with a myriad of shops and restaurants. we were on the 2nd floor in a king suite - very comfortable bed - walk down the hall onto the balcony that is the length of the hotel (3rd floor has a mini balcony, 4th floor no balcony), with chairs, small table, bench... fun for people watching, looking at the businesses across the street - it can get noisy from the traffic below.cons: refrigerator didnt work - they had to bring in another one - smaller, and it never got very cold; blinds in bedroom broken for opening/closing, some slats hanging down; the wand in the living room window broken off - if you can reach it you can twist the knob at the top in the corner that the wand attaches to to open/close the blinds. TV in living room didnt work - the one in the bedroom did - very inconvenient as i go to bed before my husband and he likes to stay up and watch tv; noise from traffic, cars and motorcycles revving their engines, and and people on the sidewalk under out window went on until about 10:30 - and this was on a thursday - can only imagine what its like on friday and saturday! mini 2 burner stove but no plates, dishes, pots/pans, silverware, glassware or cups; small sink but no dish towels, paper towels, or dish soap; only a small love seat to sit on - really could use a chair. might want to bring some soap/body wash, theres only a small square of face soap; pulled the towel off the rack and rack came with it.the pictures of the rooms on their website are misleading (we looked in at some of the other rooms) - they are not as plush, luxerious as depicted. dont know why there is a picture of a courtyard with wrought iron tables, chairs and a fountain because there isnt one.basically - THIS PLACE IS A DUMP! i get it that this is a 100-year-old hotel, which makes it even more important and necessary for ongoing maintenance and upkeep. theyre not responsible for noise outside, but choose your room carefully. looking over both yelp and google reviews - doesnt seem that management cares - theyre riding on the history of the hotel - and dont be fooled by the beautiful lobby... a real shame, this could be a real gem.dont think well be back

Loved the historic charm in the lobby and exterior. Elevator was broken. The kichenette in the room was nice to have. Not much charm in the actual rooms. The balcony is closed which was a bummer. Location is great. No breakfast.

Walked into a musty-smelling room with a gamey loveseat bed.The photo doesnt show just how dirty the armrests are or how big the gaps are. The room was dimly lit by a low-hanging fixture with burnt out bulbs. My husband swapped bulbs from the bedroom fixture to make it so we could see in the sitting area. Couldnt replace all of them, but it helped a LOT.End table on one side of the loveseat. No coffee table, so only one of us had a spot for a glass. And husbands head kept hitting the light fixture.Living room TV had no remote. Called front desk, and she said if there wasnt a remote, the TV must not work. Watched Thursday night football on an iPad.Used the spare blankets from the closet to cover the gross loveseat. Used spare pillows to try to counter the huge dip in cushions.In the actual bedroom, 2 end tables, but no lamps. Had to use cell phone flashlight to read remote.Clean tub! Hot water instantly for shower! Real door, not a curtain! Enough linens for 2 days. Of course, we were booked for 3....Actual coffee mugs and wine glasses in kitchenette, so bought dish soap and didnt use disposables. Have to laugh about kitchen stuff. 2 coffee mugs, 4 wine glasses, 3 plates, a pot, 3 butter knives, a serving fork, and a large spoon. ???Even one chair would have been nice, (and how about a little table?) but the room was totally inadequate for a 3 day stay in a room where you technically have a kitchen. No daily housekeeping, but the very nice housekeeper working the floor gave me a larger wastebasket and more washcloths when asked.If I only rated the service based on her, it would be a 5. But first, there was the person who took my call about the TV and did NOTHING. Then my 2nd day request for more coffee packets, and the front desk gave me part of what I requested... because thats what she had on handLocation was fantastic. Also, whenever we saw into other rooms on our floor, it was obvious that some of them had decent amenities. Just not our room.There is definitely no free breakfast, or afternoon cookies in the lobby.Very overpriced.

If you want history, step into the lobby and youll get some history. However, the rooms, while clean, are not very nice - and mine lacked any sense of history, and/or charm whatsoever. The rooms truly need a gigantic overhaul. I could hit a bunch of thrift stores and do wonders for this place well beyond whats there. All of this said, if you just want a bed and a clean room, this place will work and the location is very good. Also they are pet-friendly so I really appreciated that!

I would give it a 0 if I could.DO NOT stay here.Rooms are dumpy.We had the 2 room suite while traveling with another adult couple. The couple in one bedroom had to WALK THROUGH the other bedroom to get to the bathroom.No customer service. Staff is rude.Manager no where to be found.Be warned.Edited on 7/25/23Just a quick update. Dont be fooled by the reply below. I was finally told today that the manager is not taking my calls. He has NO interest in what needs attention at the hotel. No interest in hearing that his staff is giving incorrect information to potential customers over the phone. No interest in hearing that his staff is rude to customers. As I said above, Be Warned.

The lodgings were quite charming and lovely. Very spacious and comfortable accommodation, and the hotel is stunning. Parking is only around the corner, and the level of concierge care is extraordinary. The receptionist was quite helpful and offered to park my car, carry my bags to my room, place a takeout order and have it delivered to my room. She even accompanied me to the floor I was staying on so I could learn how to use the elevator, which is the hotels original elevator. If you happen to be in the Placerville, California region, Id highly recommend it because I had a great time staying there.

Pretty neat historical hotel thats supposedly haunted. Theres a chess board table in the lobby and a tiny jerky elevator. There was a bat inside the place the night we arrived and they had to call animal control. Some strange people there thought me and my lady were ghosts and then invited us up to their room to speak to spirits using a crystal. Interesting vibe

It is a cute historic hotel in a very sweet little town. I loved all the unique independent shops and restaurants in walking distance of the hotel. The room itself was comfortable enough. There were some huge historic touches to the building that I enjoyed. It is way cheaper than any hotel you will find in Tahoe and only an hour from fun snow tubing and skiing. There is free hotel parking behind the building which we only realized after checking these reviews. We almost accidentally paid for a lot a few blocks away.

I stayed at the Cary House for a wedding in the nearby area and was very disappointed with how upper management treated a large party for the planning phase. There were at least 15-20 rooms booked here for the event and while the manager promised to reach out with a comp code, they failed to deliver weeks leading up to the wedding and ultimately never followed through.In addition, I realized I had left an expensive clothing item in my room the day I left the hotel and notified the front desk if it would be possible to return to me via mail. I offered to pay for the postage but they reassured me that they would cover it. Ive tried calling back to check-in on where this might be in the mail, but no one knows if it got mailed or if it got lost in transferring hands within the hotel; the wedding was in early June. Very disappointed with the empty agreements and lack of professionalism here. Give your business elsewhere.

We love Historic Hotels this has all the elements. We had a great stay the only downfall is each rooms are very different they need better photos on website.

Came to stay for a night on a Saturday. Overall, great hotel but a bit pricey and there is a bar that plays loud music across the street - not horrendously loud but noise. Beds fairly uncomfortable as they are too firm. Staff was quick to assist with check in (literally took 30 seconds) as well as check out. Very clean historic hotel with a kitchen and fridge. Near several stores on the quaint main street. Free parking behind the building.

I booked the bridal suite for a delayed anniversary. It was so bad I was willing to leave and lose the $300 dollars/night. Imagine a dingy, decrepit, downtown hotel room on Skid row, it would be better than our stay at the Cary House. The desk clerk could have been less helpful but he would have had to try really hard. The staff the next morning was very nice.Elevator is very cool, very old but interesting. Until you have to walk up four flights carrying your bags because someone forgot to close the gate. Clearly not the hotels responsibility, there are tons of signs.Free parking-in a city lot that was full. We were able to park in the post-office lot.Decoration, 1970s, furniture, pillows, towels, sheets all stained. I have pictures! The shower was just wide enough to turn around but not bend over.1.5 x1.5 inch notice above the sink, the hotel is old it may take 10 minutes for water to get to you. How about posting that on the website.Same notice near the thermostat, the hotel is old, either the heat or AC is on but not both. The room was stifling, tried to open windows, too noisy, and screens with holes. It was tough to sleep. We left at 0700 the next morning. It is a very old building with some real character. As long as you know what you are getting it could be an interesting stay. We have stayed at historical hotels across the US and have never been disappointed, now we have stayed at a skid-row want to be too!

The hotel had a lovely lobby and historic elevator that dates back to 1926. The staff was very kind and helpful as well. I would say, however, that the rooms need a bit of upkeep. I stayed in 306--Union Mine, which I noticed had one small bottle of mouthwash and a square of soap for toiletries, but no shampoo or conditioner. Luckily, Id brought my own, so it was all right. There was a mark where someone had left an iron on the toilet seat, which was a bit off putting. Also, someone seemed to be vacuuming at 11pm or later. I had to be up early for work the next day, so it was difficult to sleep. Adequate but not very restful.

I adored this hotel ! Placerville is my hometown so I loved staying somewhere with such a great history. My only complaint would be the two different gals that worked at the front had their boyfriends with them behind the desk or lounging around the lobby with them which I think is unprofessional & distracts them from their jobs.

Historic and charming hotel with upgraded bathrooms, all-in-one in-room kitchenettes and very good quality towels! (That last one is the most important to me, LOL). Mist ride the elevator! Such a cool experience! The girl at the front desk, I believe her name was kiera, was extremely helpful and gave us the most haunted room in the hotel! She also gave us a quick tour of the basement and the gambling room which was so cool! She went beyond our expectations to make our stay super fun and comfortable. We did a little investigating throughout the night but werent 100% on anything we may have gotten. Definitely come stay here, even if you arent into the whole paranormal thing, this hotel is beautiful and rich with history.

We loved our stay! We came out from the Bay Area hoping to experience an historic and haunted bldg and to see some snow, and we were not disappointed. The hotel features beautiful stained glass windows & a beautiful wooden antique reception area as well as the oldest elevator west of the Mississippi, which we did ride on.The room was great - comfy King bed, premium sheets, pillows, towels & sundries. Coffee & tea in the room, which featured a kitchenette. There were no chairs in the room, which was kind of weird.We stayed on the 4th floor in Room 405. When my husband was up in the night, the alarm clock was going brighter, then dimmer! I didnt see it, as I was asleep. Haunted!We woke up to a snow storm & no power! The entire hotel was dark. Thank goodness there was a little emergency lighting. Most folks seems to be leaving when we did for the same reason. No electricity meant no strolling the cute shops to breakfast & coffee.We were able to safely get out of town on Hwy 50 and found electricity & coffee in Shingle Springs.

Room 303, The Grand Victory room. A very delightful stay. The room was a clean mini suite with small kitchen. Bring your own plates and utensils.Outside of a few creaks (and the bars emptying out at 1am) we sadly did not experience and haunting this time.We loved the old West flavor of the lobby, halls, staircase and the oldest elevator in the West. Love the town. Beautiful old hotel. Mark train and Grant stayed here. Was the service better then.Air conditioning very weak, refrigerator does not work. Side lamp doesn’t work.No ice machine. Walking down the hallsfelt like I was in the Shining, it was really cool. The interior design matched the setting, not too shabby. Its pretty basic inside, theres no room service, massage, exercise room and stuff. The water takes at least 10 minutes to heat up and the elevator looks real old! The walls were adorned with beautiful portraits and vintage photographs and the front lobby was a cool little museum to stop by and admire the stained glass windows, or look at the display cases.The room was really nice and had comfortable beds. It couldve been a lot more vintage decorated There were some old looking wooden tables, a kerosene wall lamp,vintage paintings, and there were old school looking books. But nothing too special.Overall, the atmosphere was wholesome with a bit of a creepy factor that made the stay a whole lot better. It met all my expectations! Great Historical landmark to check out! I didnt want to leave, its so relaxing, comforting, and I just loved the environment. Amazing hotel !

It was fun to stay in a historic building, and location cant be beat BUT I dont think I would stay here again, because the sleep is not very comfortable:The bed is rock hard (one of the firmest beds I have ever been in... I couldnt even lay on my side, it hurt too much... forced to sleep on my back), and the pillows are cheap ones that arr not very good, either. The walls/windows also seem thin... a lot of noise got into the room from outside. The price is not low, and doesnt include breakfast or anything, so its not worth staying somewhere this difficult to get some rest.

I reluctantly make the post. Stayed here before and had a great experience. On Tuesday 8/23 we spent the night in room #304. There was a sitting room with a tv...but no couch to sit on. There were two hard back chairs that were very uncomfortable. Most comfortable spot in the room was the bedroom...that didnt have a tv. We had a full kitchen that we didnt need...and of course there was no table to eat at if we chose to use the kitchen. My wife is fully disabled. Had to lay on the floor to get comfortable. Upon letting the girl behind the counter know that they should remove the chairs and put a couch in the room. Her response was sometimes you get what you pay for. Placerville is a great place to go visit. Right now I wouldnt go back

Stayed in room 406 John Sutter in mid-July 2022. Had to make a reservation due to a jury summons. Honestly was expecting worse than I got. I have stayed in Best Western(s) and Motel 6(s) that were far worse.Some may find the room I stayed in a little lacking. However, it suited my needs just fine. This room has a mini fridge and a microwave. Very Noice! This is why I put 5 stars for RoomsThe hydroponics system, as they put it cools the room very well. Almost too well. One hour under the cold air and I had to go outside to warm up.The bed was a little too plush for what I am used to, but that may be a good thing for someone else.There is quite a bit of ambient noise in this building. The floors creak quite a bit. Also, there is a fire station right down the street. If you are a light sleeper or easily disturbed by noise... Bring earplugs. Ambient noise is not a problem for me.The hallways are narrow and low light levels persist in the halls of the hotel. If you have any difficulty with low light or claustrophobia, this might not suit you well. As for me... I like low light and compact spaces. It kind of has a Backrooms vibe =)I didnt honestly feel anything haunted during my stay. Only notable thing was a warm bubble of air about the size of a German Shepherd on the bed next to me. It suddenly occured and felt strange considering I was blasting cold air into my room.I did not feel anything malevolent from it. Did not feel frightened or threatened by it. I definitely think there is some paranormal activity here, though I wouldnt worry too much about it if you have a strong mind and spirit.All in all. I am glad that I stayed here. Really neat hotel, all historical. The lobby and stairway are very beautiful and have an old feel to them as expected. Front desk clerk was very kind and helpful, he accommodated me and my dog in a nice room. The elevator is old and weird but in a fun way. The room I stayed in was up to code with a modern kitchenette and cabinets. My only petty complaint is I wish there was a small end table next to the couch where I could rest my coffee cup and breakfast plate.

Beautiful historic inn. Stayed in one of the 2 bedroom rooms. Loved the atmosphere. As for it being haunted well lets just say no and my boyfriend was sitting on the bed and we heard a loud noise in the main room and we went and checked and one of the porcelain cups had fell into the sink. These cups was sitting in the coffee pot tray a good foot or more away from the sink. TV also came on and back off without us touching anything. But it was a great experience and I would definitely go back.EDIT ON REVIEW: Been back TWICE since this review and still one of the BEST places to stay in and around Placerville. I was there on fathers day June 19th.. the front desk lady was amazingly nice to talk to and she even recognized me from my review! A very pleasant stay. Specious rooms and comfortable beds. We came in very late and the hostess let us in, quick check in and we got our room. This hotel definitely feels historic and warm. The old elevator is definitely an interesting experience. The hotel is comfortably located in the midst of the town, 30 seconds walk to all the nice little restaurants and cafes around. Loved it.

This hotel is absolutely grim. After seeing our room my husband and I actually debated buying blankets to sleep in the car instead of this nasty place but with fires nearby and a ton of smoke in the air we ended up having to stay in the “suite” we had booked. A tent would have been so much nicer. I think there are also a couple of one star hotels a few miles away that look (at least in pictures) a whole lot nicer.

There was no stay I emailed the Cary House asking about renting their banquet room please keep in mind I emailed them several month ago before the fires, in two days I received a call from someone named Josh he said he was the general manager we spoke for about twenty minutes going over my needs. I also asked for special room rates for about (15) guests staying the night OH I wanted to rent the banquet room for a New Years Eve party, Josh seemed very helpful he said not a problem I could also use the adjacent lobby outside the banquet room maybe even a outside patio I was quoted $550.00 for the evening.Josh said he would come up with the room rates he did mentioned he could not be to flexible on the room rates not a problem he mentioned by that Friday he would email me a contract. That Friday came and went no contract, so I left a phone message another week went by no message I even emailed him again asking him if this New Years was not possible how about Halloween for 2022 again no response. I have called a total of two times with another email no response? and now we are two months away from the end of this year.(2021)I am what is known as an events manager and have done this position roughly half my life never in all of my experience have I been stiffed on a hotel wanting to do business with the public, I was once the Manager on Duty at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay if I had treated Josh the way he has treated me I would have been fired.If for some unforeseen reason he could not help me how difficult would it have been to reach out to me and just tell me.The event managers world is very small in Northern California and boutique hotels are always looking for their next group to sign up and rent the rooms...Never will I recommend or step foot in this hotel thanks to their general manager (Josh) no customer service what so ever to speak of, what a let down. I hope the owner reads this and at the very least speaks with Josh.I have been an events manager for well over (30) years in the end it took me several months to sit on this experience and try to figure it out?I wish nothing but the best for the Cary House and its staff.Thank you.Robert

The accommodations were very quaint, very beautiful. Very comfortably sized room and the hotel itself is just beautiful. Parking is just next door, the level of concierge service is out of this world. The person working the desk was so kind, offered to park my car, take my luggage up to my room, order food and bring it to my room, and even escorted me up to the floor i was staying on so Id know how to use the elevator, which is the original elevator in this beautiful historic hotel.I was very pleased to stay there, and Id definitely recommend it if you happen to be in the Placerville, CA area.

Then later the two Tvs in the suite didnt work, there were now HDMI cables from the cable box to the TV input. asked again the next day and was told there have been problems and it wouldnt be till 2 days later that someone could look at it. The air mover was not running but these idiots would not take my input, and I was a maintenance engineer with Marriotts fos several years. No offer to move us to another room as they were booked solid. Suay away from this place.$618 for 2 nites, totally disgusted!!!!

Unit had a small kitchen with pots and pans and plates and cups but No utensils to eat with or cook with. Second room had a TV in it but it was not connected to anything so could not watch it. Hot water in shower was always only luke warm. Heater even turned down roasted you out that in 40 degree weather we had to sleep with window open all night so you heard all of main street noise and traffic. And lastly parking for hotel is quite far and accessed through an alley! I do not recommend this hotel for the price you pay!

We made a last minute decision to visit “Gold Rush Country” over Memorial Day weekend. We were only able to get one night at Cary House, but because my 7 year-old was super excited to stay in a “haunted hotel”, we took it.The staff- the girl who checked us in was friendly and patient with my kid and his endless questions about the “ghosts”, so that was nice.We stayed in a king suite, room 406. It was nice to look out onto the street from the windows (loud at night though, probably because of the holiday). The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. There were extra pillows & a blanket in the closet, which was great. My son loved the elevator. The room decor is fair. There was an out of place desk lamp on one nightstand (last minute replacement for a broken regular lamp?) The wallpaper is so-so, more “Home Depot Historic” than vintage reproduction- but my kid thought it was sooooo fancy, so there you go. Someone else mentioned the lack of chairs- a desk with a chair would have been great, but that probably wouldn’t have been historically accurate either. My only true “con” about the accommodations: no washcloths. There were towels and hand towels, but no washcloths. The shampoo was nice though.About our ghost adventure- my kid was very eager to make contact with a real ghost, whether or not we really did is a mystery. I downloaded a suite of “ghost hunting tools” from the app store (which I recommend, if it’s your kind of thing).To me, the lobby seemed like the most likely place to run into a ghostly guest. I had The EMF sensor on and the reading spiked at the chess table. We sat in the lobby for about 25 minutes and the EVP detector (which turns signals into words) returned the name “Elwood” and a few other words that seemed “on brand”- kinda creepy. The next notable EVP was on the 2nd floor staircase- at the second floor there’s a little wooden settee, and as we passed it, the detector said strongly “COUCH”. We sprinted up the last two flights! The other name we heard on the detector was “Emory”. I looked on the Ancestry app and there was a “J Emory” born in Ireland, 1815, working as a miner in Placerville in 1860. As far as “Elwood”, there is a “Channey Ellwood” listed as a miner in Placerville in 1852 (pre-hotel).My husband and I are chalking the whole thing up to coincidence, but my Junior Ghost Hunter extraordinaire is quite pleased with the whole experience, from wallpaper to Wild West ghosts. Will return in the future, as Main Street is filled with great shops and restaurants.

This was our second stay here. Our first stay was nice with great customer service. We came with our daughter this time, excited for her to stay at this beautiful, historic hotel, but this time the service was absolutely horrible. We came to check in just before a shift change. The guy checking us in made us feel like we were a total inconvenience to him. We got our keys and went to our room. When we got to our room we noticed the things we specifically asked for were not there. So I went down and kindly said that when we made the reservation it said they would accommodate up to 4 people. Well our room did not so we kindly asked again if we could get a roll away bed then. This guy seriously had a tantrum right in front of us. Huffing with loud sighs and complaining under his breath as he walked away. I waited in the lobby until he came back. He never mentioned my bed was there etc. He totally ignored me. Other people were calling on the phone and he was rude with them as well. We thought, well he must be having a bad day and leave it at that. So we get up this morning and leave the hotel to do some shopping. When we come back to our room, about 5 hours later, it smelled horrible. Like backed up sewage or something. We could not stay in that room for another night with it like that. So I went down and kindly told the gal at the desk about the room and the same guy from yesterday’s check in was just coming on his shift and I heard him laughing at me. He then preceded to follow me up to our room. He said, “it just smells like someone went to the bathroom, but if you need to change your room, I guess we could do that”. So he gave us a new set of keys to another room but we could hear him complaining and talking about it out loud to others at the front desk. He was so unprofessional and rude. What a disappointment. Sadly, we will not return again or recommend this place to anyone else.

The AC was not working in our room in 100+ degree weather. The room was not prepared for guests, no trash can or phone in room upon arrival. The 1926 elevator was cute but its charm quickly wore off after other guests failed to close the gate making it inoperable. There was a cheap coffee maker in the room and no ice machine to make cold drinks. The parking lot is inconveniently located a block away from the hotel. Maid service is only available upon request and the desk clerk remembers to tell you. I would not recommend this hotel for anyone with a disability.

FIRST the room has central air. It was already cool when I walked in! For my money thats the berries. The service was awesome, the guy carried my bags but he also parked my car for me. All the guys at the desk were awesome and friendly. They really make you feel like a guest, in the truest sense of the word. If you get the chance, do stay here. Its a hit or miss experience depending on what room you get. Some rooms are well cozy appointed, others are downright grim. Weve stayed here about 10 times or more over the years but the last two years have been not so good . The Poverty Point room is very accurate. There is a kitchen but no table to sit at. No coffee table. One kitchen type chair and no lamps on end tables . It all over head severe lighting. I am here now. It is a convenient location .

This place is really cool actually! It has a super old-timey feel to it because of how old the building is, the decor is authentic and the rooms are a tiny bit creepy, but thats what makes it kind of exciting! There are rumors of it being haunted but I never saw anything ghost related... Lol. The elevator was the coolest part!! Super old but works like it should!! Really fast too. Check out website photos compared to mine. Our stay here was excellent. The room was awesome! We had an amazing view of the street. I loved the journal in the room for guests to write their stories and experience in that room. We didnt see or hear any ghostly activities, though some people in the journal said they did. We loved sitting in the balcony in the morning and watching as Placerville woke up. The place is cute and rustic but thatsbas far as the enjoyment goes. The room we got had no AC so it was a hot and sweaty night. The toilet ran all night, the towel rack wasnt screwed to the wall, the night table lamps werent plugged in because the ONE outlet was across the room. The TV receiver was behind the fridge so you had to get up and stick the remote back there to change the channel. The best part, no staff... after having to call a hotline to check in, the 20 other calls i made over a 2 hour span I to get the ac fixed and fresh towels went in answered. Would recommend camping outside vs staying here.

Staff answered our questions, but there was not much personality there. No communication between staff; we told them when we booked it that we would be checking in late, no one wrote it down, we needed a roll away bed no one wrote it down nor brought it to us till we walked back down to the lobby and called them to get one (no one was at the front desk at 8pm). We also wanted to upgrade to a bigger room since their were 5 of us grown women staying. They avoided the question when we booked and avoided the question again in person. The room itself was cute with the historic theme and we knew it was an old building, but we didnt imagine our room would be 20 degrees hotter than it was outside, even with the AC on the lowest setting when we arrived in the evening. Again we knew it was an old building and run with a historic background, but the stay would have been much better if the staff had more personality, answered all of our questions and been more upfront with us.

My husband and I spent a night at the historic Cary house Hotel. We enjoyed the vibe of the hotel, the room small, but that was perfect for us. This cute hotel is located in Downtown Placerville, so we were able to have breakfast at the California Kitchen across the street and there were more than enough vineyards for us to explore. The hotel cost less than I would have expected, each room is individualized (we stayed in the Henry James Hank Monk room and included a short history of Hank), and is located right next to a bar. The room was clean, customer service was good even though we arrived a bit after 8 pm, and the bed was comfortable. One thing to note is that because the building is old, the hotel provides heating for only half the year and cooling for the other half,however the windows do open, so it wasnt an issue.

Sticky floors and no shampoo/conditioner.We were excited to stay in the historic hotel that maybe haunted in a great location in the historic downtown area. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. Right away their was an odor when entering the front entrance. The carpets where extremely dirty you can see the dirt build up in the meantime pathways people tend to walk. Once up in the room as soon as we entered there was a stench of urine that hit you in your face. The carpet floor was sticky, seems the carpets have never been cleaned, thank goodness for flip flops. We had to buy frebreze from the hardware store across the way. We described the room to our kids who called as “depressing”.Next morning when up to take a shower I could not find shampoo or conditioner. I walked down to reception to as for some. It was early and no one was there, which is fine. I used the phone to call. I asked the gal that answered if I could get shampoo snd conditioner. I was told there should be some in the restroom. I had searched through the medicine cabinet as well as drawers and under sink, nada. She said “there should be shampoo”. I said, “well unless it’s hiding I can’t find any” to which she responded “oh then we must be out”So there I went at 6something a.m. walking down the street to the Shell gas station to buy some.Just be warned it’s a place to lay your head, but it could be wayyyyyyyy better.

When we arrived, we didn’t have everything that we reserved so we asked him if he could assist us. He looked at his watch and did a huge sigh and ran up the stairs huffing and puffing. Then he came back down and didn’t say anything. So we waited and waited for him to say something and he never did. We went upstairs and he put the cot we asked for in front of our door. Then the next day when he arrived, we told him that our room smelt so bad even though we hadn’t been in it all day. He laughed as like if we were serious and then went upstairs again. He gave us a new room and again huffed as he came down. He said, “it smells like someone went to the bathroom and we’ve never experienced that here before”. The property description of historic is accurate. However just because its historic and resembles what a time capsule would look like doesnt mean it should be dysfunctional.#1. The elevator is useless. It is very old and sort of works but as one fellow traveler put it, the stairs are reliable, not the elevator. Just that one outdated (historic) elevator and it is anyones guess if you will get to your floor. Also related, the elevator entrance id NOT flush with the floor so watch your step, you might trip.#2. The A/C works very well AT NIGHT. Either the system is programmed to limit the temperature setting to WARM during the day (meaning intentional) or, I have no clue...#3. CHEAP! Just one tiny bar of soap resembling a thin chocolate square to be shared I guess between the shower and sink. The toilet lid was cheap plastic that required pushing down with persistence to close.Placerville downtown is a tourist trap and one expects that anywhere, but to pay the rates this hotel charges for what you receive is exorbitant. Ill not ever consider this hotel in the future.BTW, it could be a very cool place if managed properly. Too bad.

Nice, old historic hotel. The tilted floor definitley disorientates you a little, especially if youve had a few drinks lol. I came here for paranormal reasons and it did not disappoint. The main haunted rooms I checked out were 205, 212 and I believe 210 I stayed in. 205 was the most active. The lobby areas not so much. The rough ride old elevator was probably the scariest thing there and not for ghostly reasons. You may want to avoid it.

Yes, the hotel is old, and it is historic. This is a hotel that differs from many others. The room was nice and decent and relatively clean. Very convenient location right on the main street in Placerville.The old and the historic have their charm, but nevertheless some maintenance and upgrades must be done. It must be possible to get rid of the terrible smell in the gangways and the reception area and still keep the “old and historic”.But all in all, a pleasant stay and I really recommend everyone to try a night or two at Cary House. There is nothing to be scared about here (except from the price level, maybe). Incidentally, I saw no ghosts during my stay. The closest I got to ghosts must have been one of the employees at reception who looked like a ghost when I had some questions along the way.Ahead of my stay, I had some questions which I communicated via the messaging service on the booking page I used. Our room 402 had a disgusting bathroom. The caulking around the tub was peeling and separating, all 3 colors! The skid mat on the tub bottom was dingy gray and peeling. The floor moulding at the tub base gapped and needed caulking. We were there 2 nights with no room service or clean towels or soap!

Spectacular. As a resident of Placerville, I always wanted to spend an evening in Cary House. So finally when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it. So glad I did. This facility is full of history. Its well maintained but its true standout is the staff. In particular, Jenn. Over the top accommodating. I came her for a girls get-away. Its a charming place but really lacking in some basic expected ammenities. We were there in October. It was over 90 degrees but there wasnt any air conditioning available, or any fans. The windows are small or dont open. They had turned the AC off for the season. There is a bar near the front and the town fire station in the back. Between several episodes of sirens throughout the night, fights and loud drunk people until 2am, and the extremely hot rooms, it was difficult to sleep. I stayed in one of their more expensive rooms- a kitchen suite. There was no microwave. There was a stove, but no pots or pans so I couldnt make anything...not even a cup of tea. The tub was very challenging to get in and out of as there was nothing to hold on to. It could be dangerous for anyone who wasnt fit and young. The manager did offer $25 off per night for the rooms due to the heat when we complained. I really wanted to love this place but missing several nights sleep wasnt acceptable.

Mind you, this is a very old hotel. That was part of the charm. The dedk clerk gave me a courtesy call to make sure I was still coming. This guy came out to my car and brought in my bags, explained parking and a little bit about Placerville. The elevator is very old, very small. I loved it. Some of the photos I posted are of my room and the lobby. I really felt like I was in an apartment!. The only draw back is the thin walls and creaky floors. I plan on returning there some day. Placerville is a laid back and historical place to hang out. How often do you see the sheriff dressed in old western style clothes, gun in holster at the hip, walking down the street and greetings everyone? One other thing. I asked the desk clerk at check out if by any chance they had a gentleman, who has a nice soft singing voice who gently test the room doors at about two in the morning. I was up reading and heard the soft singing and some one turning the door knob before he continued to the elevator, which is next to my room. I opened my door about the same time I heard the elevator door close and operating. The singing faded. I decided to look to see which direction he was going. But, I was startled to see that the elevator had not left my floor! The desk clerk had no ideal what I was talking about! Your guess is as good as mine!

Through the window, a dead body glistened in the moonlight. Hangmans Tree was written underneath. A reminder of an innocent man. Not guilty! We were excited to be able to stay at a historic inn while traveling with our dog. We had to abruptly leave in the middle of the night due to BUGS in our bed and room. The elevator didnt work and when checking in after hours your supposed to call a number listed on the door that is a wrong number. The difference is a theme of old west and creaky, uneven floors and an old elevator with a gate. The charm ends when you leave the lobby :-( Our room was dismal and run down. It was completely opposite of what you would expect. It looked more like something you would find at a sleazy roach coach motel somehowere. There was paint missing in places, holes in the wall and modern furniture mixed with 1970s decor. So random! We were expecting elegance and antique. So to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The bars across the street were incredibly loud along with the people and motorcycles using the alley way right outside our room. The TV set up was complicated and the signal was touch and go. We honestly would have left if we could have spoken to a manager but the entire staff leaves at 8 and no one picks up the after hours phone number.

Worst customer service I have ever experienced at a hotel.The woman who refused to give me her name, left me standing outside in the snow, instead of letting me into the lobby around 11pm to check into our hotel room. The Cary House is a beautiful historic building, and one of the 1st hotels built in the state of California. The hotel has 2nd working elevator in CA, beautiful finish, antique furniture (inc early 1800s piano in the lobby and amazing antique light fixtures) and artwork, and most important... super comfy beds. The experience was much like staying in a museum.While historic and interesting, the rooms are quaint (but clean). Historic decor does include historic plumbing (aka no hot water) and antique (1980s) TV... who needs a TV in a cool historic town, anyway? The Cary House arranged a complimentary glass of wine at the cute wine bar next door, for every guest. Service was SUPER friendly and accommodating too.The Cary House is renown for being haunted by Stan, a Gold Rush aged hotel keeper. The Cary House is located directly across the street from the old Hangtown Hangmans Tree, where the cowboys and goldminers used to hang the unpopular people (fact..really). I was so pumped to meet Stan, but no such luck. Spirits were great in the space, so maybe he went on vacation this weekend. The experience was priceless, hence the our choice of staying here vs a medium-grade hotel chain was obvious.If you want a historic and positive wild west experience, check out Cary House. If you want more luxurious or hot water and a flatscreen, check out somewhere else.

The Cary House is a small historic hotel in the heart of historic Main Street Placerville, a gold rush town in northern CA off of hwy 50. Nice rooms, although a bit creepy. Parking in the back, some juices and coffee in the morning. I would stay there again.

I love this hotel takes you back to the 1800, in fact the area around the hotel is the historic Placerville downtown. Lovely place to stay.💖
