Ive been at Highlands of Marin nearly a year now and Ive really enjoyed it. Moving from the city, the Highlands has everything I was looking for: great weather, easy parking, a clean and well-maintained gym, two gorgeous pools, ac/heat and kind/thoughtful neighbors. One of the best things about The Highlands is the helpful service manager, Steven! I literally submitted a small plumbing issue and he fixed it in minutes! I work from home and feel really lucky to spend my days at the Highlands.

Steven the maintenance manager is the best! Throughout our year and a half stay at the highlands of Marin we didn’t have many maintenance calls, but when we did Steven was there to fix them promptly and thoroughly! He was very knowledgeable with all appliances and was able to understand problems with minimal communication. Thank you, Steven!

My husband and I have been residents of Highlands of Marin for 6 months, despite some comments we had heard about this property we decided to give it a chance, I can really tell you that we were not wrong to move here, the place is located a very good area, safe and clean. Another point that he has in his favor is the Maintenance Manager, Steve is a nice guy who knows how to do his job, we have made multiple maintenance requests and he has always been very efficient and effective. We feel very happy and comfortable.

I have been very happy in my stay at Highlands of Marin.The maintenance manager Steven Smyles has been very helpful with any service requests that I have had in my apartment.He explains how to work things like the dimmer lights and no request is silly or unimportant. For instance when my washer broke, it was replaced quickly. When the shower was difficult to turn on, he fixed that too.He truly wants all the residents to be happy in their homes. He has a friendly and professional manner about him.I have a parking place very close to my apartment and the grounds are beautiful with wild turkeys that come to visit.

Steven the maintenance manager has fixed several things in my apartment very quickly and was easy to coordinate with. He took extra time to teach me some things and answered all of my questions. He was really nice and encouraged us to give him a call anytime for maintenance issues! Good customer service makes all the difference.

One of the worst complexes Ive stayed in. Looks good on the outside but absolutely nothing special during my 14 month lease. Paper thin floors you can hear EVERYTHING upstairs. They allowed smoking in the building I stayed in. Never bothered to stop the problem after multiple reports from other residents knowing i had an infant in my apartment. Pools and gym were always shut down for long periods and they took over half my deposit for cleaning when we werent even staying there the last 2 months of the lease and paid good money for the place to get detailed. Overall just TERRIBLE experience. Dont let the looks fool you.

My fiancé, myself, and my cats have lived here for years now and we love it. The property and amenities are beautiful and well taken care of. The people in the leasing office have always been so kind, Jamie helped us a lot through the move in process and is always there to answer questions or provide solutions.One of the main reasons we moved out of the places we lived in the past was because maintenance issues would go untaken care of, but here they take care of things almost immediately.Steven has helped us a few times here and he’s been awesome. He addresses problems quickly, he’s really nice, accommodating, and in the past when we haven’t been home he was great with the cats (one of which we call the escape artist). We are very nervous about one of the cats getting out, so it’s really nice to know that he takes the extra caution necessary when entering homes with pets. Every time Steven helps us he does a great job making things look and work better than before.

Ive been a resident at HoM for almost 11 years. Its a relatively quiet place, and the staff have been helpful whenever I needed assistance. I have been particularly impressed with Steven in Maintenance. Each time Ive needed to have something addressed, the turnaround was quick, Steven was professional and friendly, and the issue was resolved in a timely manner.

With being in charge of maintaining such a large apartment complex, it would be easy to let things fall through the cracks, but Ive not experienced that with him. I went for a showing. Front desk guy was snide, snobbish, hardly made any eye contact. When we asked about the rates for leases of different lengths he kept responding with terms like its expensive, XYZ/month. He was extremely dismissive and almost like he couldnt care less. In the end we decided to abruptly leave without looking at the apartments.

Tons of crime at the apartments. Cops and fire trucks were a weekly occurrence during my 1.5 years living here.Consistently broken & dirty amenities. Extremely overpriced. The place had potential but it’s been left to rot by management. Look elsewhere, this is not worth your money regardless of how it may appear while touring.PLUSBilling department took thousands of dollars from me without explanation and won’t return my calls after I’ve left several voicemails. Pursuing legal action.

This is horrible experience since I have move to apartment. I have been living in the Bay Area for the last 15 years and move to Texas for 1 years when we decided to move to California we thought about this apartment because it has good views and all but one I came to the apartment Jerry from the front desk was so disrespectful to me I have asked him I have a new born baby this apartment is too cold never gets sun rise or sun sets this is end of the may but we are turning on the heater 24/7 . The first floor is all concreaded which we didn’t know about since we applied from the different state my husband and I never went for the tour plus this place has self tour options. Since I have a baby I have to use stoller for the baby there are 8 steps I have to carry baby by one hand and other hand I have to lift stoller which is horrible thing for postpartum mom who has 0 help husband lives in different state . So yesterday I went to the office and Jerry told me I’m not a good candidate to to talk no matter what I was facing since my husband is on the lease he wasn’t listening to me at all . He even put me down by saying mam do you know how to turn on the heater at your apartment I was shocked by his attitude towards to his customers. I just ask him can I move to different apartment from there where sun gets into the apartment and has walk walkway to apartment where I don’t have to climb up . He only said so what so what he wasn’t listening to me at all . This apartment isn’t for the customers needs and necessities

Steven keeps this place running. Hes helped countless times from a carbon monoxide issue, to checking on my cat when I couldnt run home, to looking at a leak under our sink and most recently, killing a Jerusalem Cricket in our bathroom for me. (I thought there was a mouse in our bathroom vent but turns out it was a nasty Jerusalem Cricket). Highlands of Marin is a better place with him.

UPDATE: Still no money returned from my holding deposit. This company is a SCAM. EVIL SLUM LORDS WITH UNSCRUPULOUS BUSINESS PRACTICES.DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. I applied at Highlands of marin And put down the $400 holding deposit and the application fee. Within 5 minutes I was rejected from being able to move in and promised to return my holding deposit within 2 weeks. I have had multiple email communications and phone calls with them and have received nothing but a belligerent attitude. . it is now 60 days since I applied. And they have not refunded my money. They are a fraudulent company. Be warned.

This afternoon I went into the leasing office and was greeted so respectfully by Jamie. He then showed me detailed directions on how to go about the self-tour. After my tour, he asked me how I liked the apartment, what were things that we could do to improve the unit. I felt that he cared about my living situation due to previously experiencing a negative apartment complex and wanted to make sure that I knew the entire ramifications of everything. He was detailed and so friendly. He also immediately contacted the gentleman who is in-charge of leasing the properties and within seconds he got a response. I was treated with so much respect, kindness, and smiles. I wouldnt recommend any other apartment complex in the San Rafael area that the Highlands of Marin.

If you care about your loved ones, don’t let them live here.We loved the idea of the amenities at Highlands, and were willing to look past living in a smaller unit because the community seemed great. What a mistake!We lived on the second floor, day ONE our downstairs neighbor was complaining about us making too much noise when we were simply walking. The bass from other units’ music would rattle our windows, we could hear our upstairs neighbors washer machine when it was being used.Lots of transients and drug users wandering the area near the clubhouse (I lived next door in 1040). Cops would be outside our building constantly. Some neighbors would pile trash and furniture outside of their units and the dumpsters were always overflowing with trash and surrounded with furniture. Loud revving, yelling and fights outside were a regularity.Gym, pools, hot tubs and the playground were out of service pretty frequently for maintenance or repairs and because “people were wearing clothes” in the hot tub, per UDR emails.No one picks up their dog poop. It’s everywhere. I watched several neighbors take their dogs out and let them freely use behind the building where my balcony was. Constantly smelled like poop.We were always sick. Runny nose, sore throats. My infant would cough throughout the night, every night, despite giving him medicine and buying a humidifier. Hasn’t happened at all since we left that building.Upon move out, they attempted to charge $700 for tub damage. We asked them for pictures of said damage and they sent us photos of our neighbors, carpeted unit. When they sent us the right photos, we compared to the pictures I took before we moved in with the exact same chips. They took off that charge but are still trying to keep 650$ for cleaning and paint, even though we scrubbed down to the baseboards. They haven’t yet returned our deposit, it’s been 23 days. Know that they need to provide you with itemized receipts of everything they’re deducting from your deposit, and please, PLEASE document all damage with photos.Consider this your warning!

They have 133 not recommended reviews at the time of this writing.I lived here for 3 years and have absolutely nothing nice to say about Highlands of Marin. Once you move in, you will be extremely unhappy with the service you receive from management and maintenance. First of all, they ignore 100% of phone calls and emails, so when you have a problem, you are forced to go into the office. However, each time I went into the office, I ended up getting into an argument with the manager, and frequently saw other tenants arguing with him also. The staff simply doesn’t care about you and have no problem lying to your face or arguing with you.During our last year here, we had to live with a terrible smell in our apartment. The maintenance guy acted like nothing was wrong and didn’t do a single thing about this. We asked him so many times to fix the smell, but all he did was enter our apartment, told us that he doesn’t smell anything, and left. He then proceeded to ignore us for months.The smell never went away, but I eventually gave up asking for help. I even reached out to UDR, the corporation that owns Highlands of Marin, and all they offered was for the regional manager to reach out to me, yet no one ever contacted me. Not once. UDR clearly doesn’t care about the wellbeing of the tenants or the service they are receiving from management and maintenance. I should have taken legal action but as someone who has never been in this kind of situation before, I wasn’t sure about what to do and ended up toughing it out.An elderly woman that used to live below us had a faulty HVAC unit that was causing intermitted problems. When she tried to heat her apartment, it would sometimes get stuck blowing cool air indefinitely. Management never fixed her HVAC unit. They didn’t believe her and were blaming her for the issue to avoid taking responsibility. They continued to ignore her and let her freeze on cold days. In the end she had no choice but to move out due to this problem.The equipment in the gym frequently break down and become out of order for months, sometimes years.

Ever since I moved into my new apartment last April, Ive had nothing but great experiences and interactions with the highlands community and staff. The apartments are well kept and outfitted with new appliances and interior, with up to date features like the smart home thermostat. I am unbelievably disappointed in the Highlands of Marin. I have lived here for about 2 years and the quality of living has just gone downhill. If you want to pay Marin premium for Oakland quality come and live here.Most recently, my car was vandalized by neighbors who had a loud party lasting until 5 AM. There were alcohol bottles thrown towards my car and my husbands car. Beer spilled all over our cars and also evidence of individuals sitting on top of our cars. We promptly contacted the leasing office and there was no empathy regarding the situation and nothing was done to make things right.In addition to this horrible experience our storage unit on the balcony flooded several times leading to $3000 worth of damaged personal items. I contacted the emergency line several times along with the apartment complex who sent someone over to air out the closet however delayed fixing the roof for over 1 year, which resulted in repetitive damage to our items.If you are looking for a peaceful and SAFE area to live this is definitely not for you!

Bad Soil. (coyotes on site full time - if you have a small dog... NO warning was given prior move in).This Environment is stagnant! There hasnt been a sense of community since Margaret left. The amenities are often out of service, filthy & highly accessible to anyone in the neighborhood - including the people who live in the woods behind the apartment or children who come in groups of ten to use the gym/pool facilities.. Steven is the ABSOLUTE WORST MAINTENANCE “MANAGER” that is complacent with the complex falling APART. Working with the staff remains a chore. The high turnover between the main office & maintenance community makes getting to know one another extremely difficult. Cars are left in random areas + break ins. Counting the days until my lease ends....

The way you would “get better” is actually contact the resident, me directly to offer concessions instead of just replying to the Yelp review if UDR really cares. The obvious right thing to do would be to offer me a discount on the remaining of my rent. Since I shouldn’t have been charged the rate of a clean, new looking apartment in the first place. Also, because I’m certain you charged the last resident for the condition they left the apartment before move out. I leased this apartment site unseen like many renters do. I was expecting a clean apartment with no stains like the photos you advertised. It was falsely advertised. As I said in my review, this condition of apartment would’ve been fine if I knew what I was getting and the price of the rent matched the condition. I’m paying over $3200 per month for a tiny one bedroom! I expected this to be immaculate upon move in. Unless this is the normal standard, if this is truly a rare occurrence and not the norm, please make it right. I would expect this if I was renting an apartment in the hood in Compton. Not San Rafael. I have rent in December and January left. Hope to hear from you.

Ive been living here for 8 months and absolutely love it! The appliances, carpet, and paint are all top-notch. I saw a bug in my apartment for the very first time last night which is incredible to me considering other places Ive lived where ants or spiders are considered your roommates.-The maintenance staff is very quick and accommodating.-The location is great and super close to the freeway without having any freeway noise. -The amenities including the gym and pools are well maintained.-I dont know about other buildings but at least in my building, its always very quiet and people are respectful about not blaring music or using their dryer at 2 am.-All of the staff are really friendly and helpfulAs a young, professional woman I feel safe and at home. Its well worth the price and everyone who comes to my place agrees that its a clean, beautiful sanctuary.

I have toured this property and by far the best place Ive seen in Marin... it has the best view of mount Tam, 2 pools and hot tub, dog park that comes with dog washing station. My favorite part is how welcoming the team is... everyone is happy and ready to help. Working with Tee and her team to find my new hope was effortless.... Overall my living experience here was great. Tends to be a quiet community, with nice pools and fitness room. I couldnt keep up with the increasing rent from year to year, but that was pretty much a trend for the area. Anytime anything went wrong in the apartment, Steven from the Maintenance/Service team was always awesome and quick to respond. The guy would go out of his way to go above and beyond, and be sure to leave the place better than he found it! Truly made you feel like you were living near family.

I lived at Marin Highlands for over 4 years. I’ve rented at a lot of apartments but the highlands have the BEST maintenance guys. Absolutely horrible experience here. The office refuses to answer calls or emails, and have the worst communication of any business I’ve seen. It’s very obvious that they’re extremely money hungry, and will charge you for anything they can. It’s a beautiful apartment that could be a nightmare because of the management:- office never answer the phone, so u have to go in person or send an email and wait a lot to receive an answer that doesn’t solve nothing, I think they shut off the office phone line- 3 residents that I know got their deposit back almost 2 months after the end of the leasing because they put the wrong address on it. Including me. Weird!!- maintanence is a joke.- prepare to be charged a lot when u move out! Even if u paint or clean!

It only took 5 minutes with Omar, a personable professional, to find exactly what we were looking for. Plenty of space, extra room, and the view! Highlands of Marin is probably the best you could get in San Rafael for the price. The apartment complex is clean, safe, and full of great amenities. This includes its own small dog park, over two pools and jacuzzis, and its own gym. Because it is on top of of a hill, it is always safe and offers some great views of the San Rafael area.The employees have always been helpful and efficient. If you want a tour of the complex or and individual complex, Id ask for Andrew. If you wanted any work done for your apartment in specific, Chris is my go to guy. The employees in the main office are also accommodating.There is also a fantastic movie theater right across the street that shows indie movies you wont be able to see anywhere else and a Safeway close by. The Northgate Mall is also very close by. Highlands of Marin is the best choice in San Rafael for an all around apartment with some luxury amenities included.

We have lived here for over 6 months now and had read the reviews and recognized certain risks/poor reviews coming in. I am now regretting that risk. While the apartment is nice and the onsite maintenance guys are friendly, senior management and facility maintenance leaves much to be desired. Anticipate at least an additional $150-$200 monthly on top of your rent and PG&E utilities for water, trash, and energy even through they cant explain the difference in energy and the PG&E bill you pay. We have been inquiring about this ever increasing bill for months with no resolution and clear answer. The hot tubs were broken for over 3 months this summer with continual excuses as to why. They do nothing to enforce parking, despite making you pay for unreserved and more for reserved. They claim to have onsite security, but whoever that is constantly lets people illegally park in handicap spots and firelanes and there are constant complaints in the community forum about missing packages. They also dont seem to do anything to prevent or remove grills illegally and unsafely on balconies, despite city ordinances and a recent fire response. O, and we are going on two weeks with an uninsulated hole in the ceiling from a roof leak. But you know, the dog park is nice, and finding a pet friendly place in Marin is tough. The gym is also nice when bros arent blasting their music so loud noise cancelling headphones fail.

HOM has been our home for more than 2 years now and the experience has just been amazing. Great neigbors, reactive and efficient maintenance technicians that you can contact through a web based request service. The views on the China camp state park and the green landscapes of Marin county cant get old. 101 is only a minute away and my commute to the east bay is counter flow ! The pool and amenities are always well maintained and the furnitures are renewed on a regular basis. The leasing office team has always been very helpful and fast responding. Always working with us to find a solution (special thanks to tee, shohreh, Andrew, Omar, Roberto Chris and the other team members).

While reading this review please carefully consider that there are a lot of people that like to write negative/bad reviews while hiding behind their computer. (Internet tough/won’t say it to your face)My girlfriend and I have lived here for almost 2 years and it’s been absolutely amazing. The grounds are always clean and the hot tub is hot (saltwater hot tub) epic.Anytime I have needed anything, may it be a lightbulb for my freezer or any minor fix, you can’t count on it that it’ll be handled.The office staff is awesome and are seriously there to help you. The maintenance guys are awesome. You will see them cruising around in the golf carts all day, everyday.Steve, Chris and Fredy. I actually look forward to “finding them” when I see their cart outside our building. Always nice to see them and say hi.These dudes work their asses off so if you don’t get the work done on your Marin clock just be a little patient.This isn’t the dmv and you’re not ordering a pizza. It’s first come first serve. I promise they WILL take care of you.The office staff is awesome and are open to any suggestions you may have that’ll make the place better.Shohreh and Tee will welcome you BY NAME and with a smile.I am in a similar business dealing with some “difficult” Marinites with whom demand some sometimes unrealistic expectations. They have it down here.If you move here you will not regret it.Is it cheap? No.Do you get what you pay for? Yes.I would rather spend a few hundred dollars to live in a place like this than some other place that isn’t half as nice as this spot!

Highlands of Marin has everything we were looking for in an apartment. Expect to pay a little more than your “rent” price though. They add in water, sewer, trash, and parking which some vary in cost. Everything in the apartment is updated and really nice too. Omar and the others were very helpful and patient with my move in experience. Maintenence responds to requests within a day. Finally an apartment that feels like home!

I am a travel RN and I recommended this place to my agency because of its reputation. My move out date is 10/19/2020. The air-conditioner thermostat started to read Battery Critical on Wednesday 10/14/2020. The weather has been in the 90s the central air is not working because the thermostat is not working I have called and texted over 4 times to fix it no response my last text sent today 10/16/2020 no response. Most places I have ever lived the air-conditioning being off in 90+ degree weather is an emergency. Maybe they thought since I am moving out no need to fix it. I still have a few shifts left I work nights so imagine trying to sleep in a hot apartment during the day. I will be sending this message out to my travel nurse websites to stay clear of this place. Will take pic of thermostat today for proof of issue and send to my agency as well. What a way to treat your residents STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE

Ive been a resident here for just over 2 years and have enjoyed every bit of it. The service here has always been great. Everytime I need something done or fixed they have always been there to get the job done. I expecially want to mention Chris, one of the best service tech and Andrew one of the best leasing consultants for doing such a good job. I came for a tour interview and they never showed up. The online process didnt go through. I arranged my schedule and spent the time to come over. I run a company and have no time to waste. As a business owner I value communication to avoid misunderstandings. So I gave them 24 h to explain...The following day a guy named Matt call me back saying it was a technical issue and assured me he contacted the team to make sure this wouldnt happen again.Guess what? I couldn’t be happier. The place is very well maintained. My boyfriend and I moved in about a month ago and Andrew helped us move our boxes. He was so helpful and we appreciate it. There are deer, wild turkey and beautiful birds around that come out. The view is stunning and we are very close to a beautiful park with hiking, biking, skating, etc.

The apartment itself was very nice quality (3rd floor). The bath and shower pressure was decent. The apartment was very clean with a well laid out floor plan.The refrigerator in the suite had a 1.5 inch opening in the magnetic sealingof part of the door, I had to jerry rig something as I was only going be in the place for a few months and wasnt feeling up to dealing with the tree huggers.There was quite a bit of construction going on while I was there, so parking totally SUCKED. You have to pay extra to park under the apartment complex where the only assigned parking was. The rest of us had to hunt for a place upon each return home, not too cool. Managers and office staff seemed like goofy tree hugger types.

I was a guest at my friend’s house at the Highlands of Marin. Unfortunately, when I was there one of the sinks happened to get clogged. We called maintenance and within ten minutes the maintenance worker Chris arrived, the problem was quickly fixed. Chris and Andrew were very friendly and knowledgeable!

Ive lived here for over 2 years. I would not recommend it. The staff turnover rate is astounding.a hey told me one thing to get me to sign a lease then it was completeky the opposite after I moved in. They dont tell the truth. Period! Like all big corporations I guess, this one is only concerned with the bottom line and will tell the tenants whatever they want to hear to keep them until they raise the rent $300 at renewal times. There have been numerous break-ins both to the gym and onto the balconies to steal bikes etc. Security is a joke as they only do drive bys!The quality of construction is poor at best. The roofs leak when it rains. You can almost hear the upstairs neighbor breathe the floors are so thin.One good thing is the wildlife that surrounds this complex. Wild turkeys and deer are everywhere. Birds and critters-coyotes etc. so if you are an animal lover its great.

This us the worst complex I have ever lived in. Please stay away. They will take your deposit, and when you leave the apartment CLEANER than it was when you moved in, they will still charge you more. I can only say one nice thing about this complex, and that is about Shohre Vargas. She is super sweet, and tries to help in any way that she can. Whatever you do, dont rent here! I would give it a negative rating if I could.

I was out there with my sister who lives on property over the weekend. The sink in the bathroom i was staying in had a clog in the sink. We made a request for it to be fixed. I was expecting from my experience in previous apartments for temhem to come sometime during the weekday. To my suprise they came WITHIN 15 min !!!!!! I was so suprised!! My apartment complex where i live at seemed fast to me but this propertys respond time was mind blowing. They came and they worked their magic and was in and out in 10 min like they already knew the problem. I would recommend this place Easily if that the type of service that is provided here.

Stay away!I applied for an apartment through their website. I paid $400 deposit and $51.33 application fee. It turns out that the posting was false. They acknowledged that it was posted by mistake. It took me more than 2 months to get my money back, and they did not reimburse $51.33 application fee, even though it was 100% mistake from their side. Basically, I paid for something that did not even exist.

Not sure why people rate this place so high. Does the bad thing just happen to me? Having stayed here for 4 months I am ready to move out. Parking is next to impossible; rental rates are high with small rooms; hallway lights only work a couple of days a week, never got fixed; little to zero service. Our AC stopped blowing cold air which made inside the apt super hot. It made my partner and I MISERABLE. The office was closed for fourth of July so we had to wait till the next day to get some help. Steven SMyles, the maintenance manager has been spectacular throughout my two-year stay here. Every time I have asked him to do things he generally gets done if not that day then the next day. For example today I needed my air conditioner fixed as it is scorching hot outside here in San Rafael. He came over immediately after I posted request and fixed AC as quick as possible. And he stayed here to make sure that it was working. That’s my most positive thing about him and of course the units here. Units are typically apartments and nothing special but the maintenance service really makes this a five star residence
