We adopted a Schnoodle puppy from Friends of Upland Animal Shelter about ten days ago. We had visited several shelters and this one was nicer than the others. They have other animals besides just cats and dogs separated in different sections. Staff was very nice but they seemed short staffed, so getting the paperwork done took a while. They are providing vaccinations as part of the adoption so we will be going back two more times. Recommend you check them out.

So thankful for them, they give you everything you need. They listened to our fears of the different shelters we have been to and the horrible experiences and they were very patient with us. They are connected with an animal thrift store which is super nice and had everything we needed for our new cat. Thank you for the new member of our family Patti (shelter name was Jaime). I adopted the sweetest and smartest cat from this shelter. She has quickly become an integral part of our family for the past two months. Every moment spent with her has been an absolute joy, as she is a true sweetheart. The shelter staff was incredibly generous, providing us with blankets, toys, and treats for our new furry friend. They even wrote a note about her, describing her as having an abundance of love to give. We are so grateful to have found such a wonderful companion and to have had such a positive adoption experience at this shelter!

I have dealt with this particular shelter numerous times for different reasons. I have never adopted a dog through them but if I were going to, I would definitely look at their dogs first. They work hard to treat them for illness and injury and give them every chance so that they are not put down. I have raised money for this shelter through my dog group on Facebook. We have over 1000 small breed dog owners in the group and they are all dog lovers. My group collected money toward the care of the dogs in the shelter. I have also gone to them for vaccinations and dental care for my dogs, and they are very reasonably priced. I think they are one of the best shelters in our area.

Devastating that a place that should be dedicated to saving, protecting and taking care of animals is doing just the opposite. Was heartbroken to see the budgie and cockatiel in a tall enclosure (these types of birds should have wide cages over narrow to help the maximize stretching their wings) especially since they are NEVER out of their enclosure. They have minimal toys for 2 bird let’s alone for never getting outside time. You have two animals in a high stress environment with little to no stimulation. And the worst part, they aren’t up for adoption. You just keep these birds in a tiny cage with no toys for viewing pleasure. How can you call yourself an animal shelter? Animal care takers? The birds water is so low their poop lands in it? Animals are more than just dogs and cats. You guys should be ashamed. Wish I could leave a 0 star.

A very nice shelter that provides many opportunities to adopt pets at a low cost. They are very knowledgeable on the animals they have available and put out announcements on their social media if they believe they have found a lost pet.Meeting rooms are nice, spacious, and clean. Kennels and cages are clean and well attended to.Pets available all have beds and blankets. Pets go on daily walks and receive affection from staff and volunteers.They give you an adoption kit with every pet you adopt that includes a free bag of food from Cozy Pet Supplies up the street and a very generous $25 voucher for their second hand shop nearby. Doggy chew, 2 blankets, bandana, and medical history (if available) of the pet was given to me. All included in the cost of the adoption fee. They have very very nice pet beds also available for only $10. Most stores sell them for a minimum of $25+ for the same size!A wonderful shelter to find your new best friend! I know I have found two of my best friends from this shelter (as well as one escapee who went on an adventure and got lost for one night. We picked her up the next day). They give you their mugshot photo when you go claim them. Very funny and cute! Makes for a great memory keepsake.

If I can give this place -10 I will!!! We try to be civilized and human with animals that we rescued because there’s people who is so irresponsible and abandoned animals!! So for those who we think we are doing the right thing and rescue this animals they do want get lots of money from us (we already fixed the animals) to no be as irresponsible as those who abandoned them!!! But this call rescue places are literally profiting from a good people!!! So after all is not a thing from their heart but a thing for $$$$$$$&

Since day one, the staff has been great. They truly care about every pet, & owner. Ive taken my Sally for shots, to get fixed, & recently for a surgery on her paw. Every time, the staff took great care of Sally. They remember Sally by name, and how she acts with the staff, and reacts with any meds that Sally has had. The prices are very reasonable. I understand they may be offering more services in the near future. Give them a call, before you go somewhere else.

They take so much time to try and get their animals adopted. Look at these beautiful photos! The volunteers are nice and willing to help and answer any questions. There are at least 200 cats there right now and many more being fostered! ADOPT DONT SHOP! I would definitely recommend adopting here!

Nice shelter and very friendly staff. Make sure to make an appointment before you go if youd like to see a specific animal. Otherwise, they only allow you to view the animals if you come in a walk-in basis. Have not been through the adoption process. Was looking for a small to medium dog, and most of what they had were larger sized dogs.

I was so disappointed with the service. In fact, my three children were crying because we were 6 minutes late to pick up Pixie - cage number P03. When I arrived at 2:06 pm, the front lady Arlene had already done the paperwork to put Pixie back on a 24 hour hold for another family. HOWEVER, there was a hold that started at 2:20pm. My children and I left the shelter crying. What upset me the most was, I could have taken Pixie because the 24 hold was for 2:20pm that day until the next day at 2:20pm. I was there before that time. I spoke to the the staff members who help with meet and greet and they told me Arlene does everything by the book and people don’t really like her. So, I decided to drive back to the shelter with my family. I asked Arlene to please let me talk to her Manager - to even call her on the phone— and her response was I will give her your number so she will call you back. My hope was that I would talk to the family and convince them to let us keep the dog. So, I got back in line and I asked Arlene to if the dog was still on the premises and she said “well, maybe she with someone for a meet and greet” — well, she lied to me because the dog was already taken. This was so unfair.

We stopped by to donate some blankets and towels but ended up taking a walk through to visit the animals in need of a home. 😢 There were so many, I wish we were in a position to adopt another pet. I honestly see ourselves making a return visit and if your looking or thinking about adopting stop by any local animal shelter. I’m sure you’ll find a pet that suits you or your family. 🐶 🐩 🐕🐱🐈‍⬛🐈

Ive read the reviews, and I must admit that I dont agree with the unfavorable ones. I dont know where they are coming from, but based on my countless interactions with them, I can only speak highly of this location. I have adopted 2 dogs from them and they are very happy. Although adopting an animal takes a little while, I understand that it is necessary for the animals safety. The staff is really kind and helpful. They genuinely care about the animals welfare and ensure that they are placed in a loving home. They also operate a no-kill shelter, which I much respect.

Very upsetting. Beware people employees schedule their friends first for adoption. I called at 10:55am for an appointment to see a pup. Was told that someone already had an interview for the pup. That party knew everyone theres they showed up with a couple of dogs. So, while observing it was evident that they were all friends. How fair is that? Nepatism at its best...sucks

I came in just browsing for a cat and a staff member named Jocelyn was the most welcoming and nicest employee I encountered. She was polite and very helpful with me. If anyone walks into this place I recommend talking to her about the animals for adoption. And this shelter is very clean and the animals seem in good health. Absolutely love it here. Might even consider adopting for real now.

Its hard to give them two stars. I wish our experience was good, but it was not at all; there are a lot of mixed and sad emotions. This shelter is a non-kill, but to get an opportunity to adopt the doggie you have a connection with, you need to have a relationship with the shelter manager—an unfortunate situation. If you see the reviews, Im not the only one that feels that way.

I am very upset with this place!!! 🤬 our family decided to adopt 2 kittens 12/17/22, shelter have me signed a waiver for us to take them home same day and take them to the animal hospital to get neutered 5 days after. Well we took them home gave them love, got them all necessaries. A few days later we take them to the vet, after picking them up, “vet”. ( foster mom) tells me they have ringworm and we need to treat them, she currently has more kittens with her and they are getting treatment for ringworm, she said “ be careful because kids can get it” as is very contagious to humans, honestly I am very upset how Can the shelter give us SICK PETS with out our consent? They could have said something and it was going to be our decision to adopt them or no.I can not take kittens back as my kids would cry endlessly for them, I’m scared for my kids to get infected, I need to buy treatment, medications, especial shampoo, treat them 2-3 times per day, take specific care of them, make sure my kids don’t touch them, disinfect all my house, keep kittens in quarantine and work my 40+ hour job all because SHELTER’D negligence.It is way to much for me, very stressful, extremely sad for poor kittens not to mention my kids are not able to give them love as they are in a cadge that of course I had to buy. A LOT of money over spend, I wished they would had called me right when they find out, how are the other cata already getting treatment? My daughter and I had to come here to take her dog because our family is about to lose our home and we have no way to care for Buddy. Habitat for Humanity are selling my home right out from under us because my mom died. So now our poor dog has no place to go. We cant care for him with my daughter being pregnant and not knowing where we are going to live. And they wouldnt take him here. And there are no shelters taking any animals at this time. So what am I supposed to do now? They make these laws about owning a pet but they dont even enforce them. So I guess its no longer necessary to give your pets vaccination shots because they no longer care. And you no longer have to get your pets fixed because they dont knock on your doors to check anymore either.Im not happy with any of these government funded organizations right now.

I had a great experience adopting from here. It’s been over 2 months now since we adopted our puppy. Brenda did the interview process for me and she was very kind. I appreciate that the adoption fee includes toys, treats, and a pet insurance trial. Although I don’t recommend the insurance brand they use (that’s not the shelters fault!), you should still activate it so you can be partially reimbursed for vet fees. It was worth the 1+ hour drive. The whole family is in love with the pup. :)

While the space for the animals seem bigger and there seems to be good intentions for the adoption process, it was difficult from what I remember. My family had attempted to adopt here a while back, and they had informed us to bring our other dog (which meant a 30 minute drive home and 30 minute drive back to the facility). By the time we came back, we didnt get allotted to a private area for our dogs to meet, but instead after letting them meet each other right at the front door of the shelter - where there were no negative events between them, simply just that my former older dog wasnt as energetic as the one we were looking to adopt, they recommended that it was not a good match. Seemed rushed and unorganized. Not sure if things have changed, but I sure hope they have. Luckily we were able to adopt at a different shelter with another friendly, energetic dog and both became good friends in their lives together.

Went here to get a cat for my mom after she had to put her cat down. They have a large selection of animals. The kennels and cases were all very clean. There wasnt an overwhelming smell of poop, so they keep the place very clean and the animals are well taken care of. They are having a discount on cat adoptions this and last month. They gave lots of coupons for pet items and a handmade blanket for the cat after adopting a cat. They were really nice and helpful. I will definitely be going back there for any pet adoptions.

Not friends of the animals is a better name. Im a Veterinarian Technician of 22 years. My boyfriemd and I were traveling, here from Arizona. We were stopped on the side of the road, Pokemoning. When a cat walked under our car. Before driving away we checked to make sure she was gone, she wasnt. Trying to get her out, I reached under the car to get her. Once she was in my hands, I realized how emaciated she was. There was no way I could leave her. We stopped and got a carrier and some food. The next day we were planning to take her to the Humane Society, they were closed. So we googled, and headed to Uplands Resue. They were callus, careless and dismissive. They tried telling me that she could belong to someone. There is no way she could have an owner, definetly not one that cared. Being that she was a skeleton with skin on it. Not my kind of people. If I was home, this wouldnt have been an issue. I wouldnt need help from people who obviously dont have a heart. So disappointed!!

I have to update my previous review. Compared to my first and pleasant experience there my second one was a sheer nightmare. Brenda who is in charge of adoptions is all up in her feelings, she is rude, sarcastic and practises unfair adoption procedures. Check out all the yelp! Reviews that talk about her doing the very same thing she did to me to others. I have also contacted their board members to make sure they were aware of the way she treats people. They however dont seem to care as they never even did as much as to contact me regarding my concerns. Very sad considering they are a non profit organization that depends on repeat adopters. I will make sure to not ever step a foot into that shelter ever again. I would suggest you go elsewhere, too.Best, cleaneat shelter i have ever been to. Adopted a dog from there. Easy and fast. Super friendly staff. Well kept up facility!

Absolute WORST PLACE TO GO !! EVERYONE PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE !! they have horrible service they gave us numbers made us wait, then tells us to form a single line for rabies and after 3 hrs of waiting ( arrived at 9:05am) they said we have only 3 minutes left cause the doctor wanted to leave. They basically ignored the service numbers given because they are lazy and incompetent. Why didnt they just for a line to begin with ?? I felt sorry for the elderly lady that was waiting as long as we were and she was turned away !! Its hot and it was probably hard for her to get out of the house. If this is how they treat people im wondering how they treat their animals when no one is looking 🤷‍♂️.

Due to my experience at this shelter, the volunteer we encountered, was the most unwelcoming, disrespectful, and racially exclusive. This lady, lacked communication skills and almost made me want to leave. The first words that were uttered towards me and my family was you cannot come in, do you have an appointment in a very snappy tone. This woman was blocking the door with her arms crossed. As my mother who has prominent ethnic features tries to enquire if we can set an appointment, she turns her back on her. Until I ask if we can set an appointment her tone suddenly shifted as she was so welcoming and accepting. As I get to the desk to set an appointment there was a family already there as the volunteer was making it harder for them as they needed to set an appointment aswell. She was using a loud voice and speaking with pauses in between her words towards this family, as if they cant understand her. They spoke English just fine and then as she finally gave this family clear directions after 10 minutes of over explaining or vague statements. right after this young lady I then realized she shoved me infront of this indigenous family that was there before I was. I have a fair tone compared family members and seeing this behavior towards other people including family angers me that this woman would prefer making it harder than giving out proper instructions and communicating with possible adopters. After all the whole point of a animal shelter is to give these poor pets a home. This lady should not be around customers due to her actions. This lady was over explaining to me aswell at the front desk while I was trying to talk to the actual staff, the staff was sweet, kind, and knew how to welcome people and make it an easier and enjoyable experience. The volunteer acts more important than she actually is when I was given the hold card she snatched it out of my hand as she offered to do for it me. This lady should never be around customers as I almost left from her over explaining for 5 minutes at the door. I will give an update if I even consider going to my appointment tomorrow hopefully I dont encounter her again.

We are trying to adopt a dog for a while for a certified sober home. We found a dog and as soon as we said is for a Sober home they refused to to give any information and told us we have to speak with their manager. The manager never called . This is ignorance and discrimination. Our foundation its all about second chances and we wanted to give a dog a second chance but they prefer to put a dog down instead of allowing people to adopt. This adoption center was very neat and clean, well cared animals. We recently adopted a Siberian husky form this center. The receptionists were super friendly and accommodating. Out pet was neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and was included in the adoption fee. The animal handler brought our dog and was patient with us answering all questioned we had in mind. Gave some great tips to care for our dog. I am glad I adopted from there.

I havent had the best experience here. Trying to adopt has been too changeling. I had a dog for 11 years and he passed away from an illness last year. And am now ready to adopt a dog. I been there on a Weekday to schedule and appointment on a Saturday and they have all been booked up. Tried a few times.

After a horrible experience with a rescue Im Ontario, I came here and they were excellent. The volunteers were amazing!! The animals were well cared for, clean, friendly. I brought my two kids to do a meet and greet with two kittens and they were very helpful. Adoption process was smooth and easy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Bad Customer service . Called 3 times and left a message to adopt a dog . They never picked up and called me back. Then I sent a email to come see the dog and adopt it . They email back telling me to call to Set up a appointment. So I called and they didnt pick up again. I left a message and they never called back with any info. You can tell that the staff really cares about the animals. I adopted a cat from here recently, and I was surprised at all the coupons for food, pet insurance, initial checks, etc. that they gave me, along with a toy and blanket. It really struck me how much the shelter doesnt just want the animals to be adopted, but to have good lives in good homes. That kind of caring isnt nearly common enough in the world. If I could give them six stars, I would.

I came to The Friends of Upland Shelter hoping to find a new BFF... the feline kind. After peaking into the porthole of the plastic box (think bus or railway station lockers but in all hard plastic with peek-a-boo capability) the cats are in I quickly made my choice. It wasnt her color or thick, long fur, it was her sweet demeanor that had me at her first meow!GG is a blessing, I feel very fortunate to share our lives together. This shelter is by far the best in the area, but I write this review with the hopes of the process for returning and surrendering animals becomes more transparent. We adopted a sweet dog who ended up not being a great match for our home situation (on us), so we sought to bring her back to the shelter. Celeste (who helped us during our adoption process) was kind during our surrender appointment, but they unfortunately couldnt take her because of a kennel cough outbreak in the shelter. My husband and I called the shelter multiple times to see when we could expect to be able to surrender our dog, and we received a different answer every time. The worst call was with someone who spoke very rudely and essentially told us to stop trying to surrender her to the shelter. We called again, got someone different, and they said that she had to go through a behavioral test before admittance back into the shelter.I understand that COVID protocols and animal medical cautions can change a shelters policies, but it would be great to have resources for volunteers who answer the phone or Upland residents to know exactly whats expected during these situations. Again, this is a wonderful shelter to adopt from, so please continue to visit!

Nice facility & services, although disappointed when we brought some stray kittens to the shelter, which had Several empty cat cages. The Animal Control Officer told us they were full, turned us away and said we should just let the kittens go free, and that their instincts would take over. Not appropriate, no other options presented at all either. Kittens in UPLAND.

My fiancé and I wanted to adopt an older dog.We found one that we thought would be a perfect.We were told we needed a lease agreement from our management company that we got We came backThe lady at the front desk was very rude she refused to let us adopt because they were going to close soon. There was more than 40min before they closed!!! She was unprofessional and unwilling to help! However the other two staff members we dealt with were very nice and helpful. First off they had done multiple check on an animal that my wife wanted to adopt and it was supposed to be a female. When we got the animal home we put them together for a night so they could acclimate. Turns out it was a male sooooo now we have Guinea Pigs that are pregnant. Absolutely ridiculous. Then when my wife went to surrender the animals they gave her the run around and refused to let her speak to a manager because they were attempting to not honor their 7 days compatibility policy. . Personally this was a one star and we will not be returning, the serious lack of professionalism, sincereity, and overall affection for the animals they are servicing have made this place a serious turn off. I sincerely hope that they change their attitudes towards their clients and their animals, otherwise that place is doomed to ruin.

What a joke!! Walk in at 5:45 and told the two ladies at the desk I would like to adopt a cat. They had me sign in and directed me to the kennel. After looking around I went back to the desk to let them know which one I would like to meet. She had me bring her the kennel number and when I did she told me I cant adopt or even hold the cat. When I asked why she said the the person that does the meet and greet is busy with the last meet and greet for the day. They are open till 7pm, I told her and she told me no meet and greets or adoption after 6pm. Keep in mind it was exactly 6pm. All I want to do is adopt a cat and bring it to a loving home. All this tells me is the employees at this place want to slack off for the last hour of their day.Who ever donates to this place should think twice. I dont think their main goal is to help the animals. Here you got somebody wanting to adopt and they turned me away an hour before they closed. Horrible place!!! I feel bad for all the animals at that place that could be in a loving home but because the staff is lazy they are left stuck in a box.

I returned a cat because she was in poor health condition and seem to have caught an infection from the shelter. I didn’t want her to get my other cat sick. I was surprised to see her being posted the same day for adoption? I would of taught they would wait till she was healthy. The shelter is small but they always have a lot of dogs and puppies to choose from. They have some cats, a few birds and occasionally have bunnies. It is a very clean shelter. They have a store that raises money for shelter needs and they also welcome donations. If you want to volunteer, you simply fill out an application and attend a 1.5 hour training. They have a detailed log of lost and found pets from dogs that have been taken to their shelter. They offer free and low vaccination clinics for animals.

The paid staff were rude unhelpful and were more concerned with getting off work then helping with adopting a pet. I didnt know that the shelter charges a spay/neuter fee even if the dog had been adopted prior and returned. This makes absolutely no sense. Why should you have to pay for a service that was paid for previously?

However I was told to come to my appointment at 12 o’clock which I did and was told that my appointment was actually at 12:30 so I was asked to come back. Only to find out that I needed to be there with my mommy in order to set an appointment to meet with a rabbit.Told the lady there that Im over 21 and she said I dont care. I am confused as to why it costed me 120 dollars for my doggy’s stay of less than 24hrs. At the time I “bailed her out” I thought it was a lot but I’d have paid any amount to get her back so I didn’t really think about it. But it is truely a lot. It seems like pet owners that love their animal and would obviously want them back home are being taken advantage of in their time after heartache of looking for their lost pets. It’s like it’s a hostage situation and the 120 is a ransom. What if an owner has no way of affording that, and especially if it’s the first time they had a run away, what happens then? They just don’t get to keep their dog? I heard that other shelters shelter lost pets for free for the first 48 hours. I would really appreciate an explanation. Okay first of all the whole french bull dog thing was completely legal i volunteer here and the dog was given the legal time hold period so the owners had an opportunity to get their dog..its not the shelters fault these people didnt put a tag or chip their dog ..i saw the dog when it came in ..the dog was legally adopted and the new owner had the right to refuse to give the dog back.. There’s nothing “Humane” about this place. My wife and I were trying to do the right thing and find something that was open. I found a stray near the area that had a broken arm and fractured ribs and just because I was a few streets into another city they said there “is nothing we can do. Not our jurisdiction.” Employees refused to let me get a word in.Update 5/17/21: Well actually your staff would not allow me to speak in regarding the severity of these injuries. And gave no information, other than I need to call elsewhere. I was informed by an actual “humane” veterinarian that allowed me to communicate of this urgent matter. We visited Friends of Upland Animal Shelter today Feb 19, 2020 and had a terrible experience with the Manager.As we approached the shelter exited, we ran into a lady who was surrendering her pet. She was very emotional and asked is we were in search of a dog because she was surrendering her pet and said all she wanted was for a nice family to take her dog Moe and would love a family like us to take him home. We spoke to the shelter about that pet and asked if we could do a meet and greet once the owner brought the pet in. We greeted and all went well they had a great time with the dog and was very playful, but we were still thinking about it and left. We returned convinced that Moe would be a perfect fit for our home, we asked to greet with him once more outdoor with our kids to play with him. We have 3 boys who are very energetic, but so loving. After meeting him and the boys falling in love with him, we were told that Moe would be given to a family with no children because he is used to a quiet home. Just keep in mind the dog was just giving to the shelter not even for a couple hours how would someone have time to even know if he was good with kids or not in my opinion they just profiled me without knowing how loving our family really isAs a parent, I am quite annoyed and very saddened with the fact that they would allow us to greet with him twice knowing that they were only going to give him to a family with no children and told that she thought we are unfit. Moe was very loving with our kids and weve been pet owners for years and recently lost our family pet Kloe she was a small to med dog... this was a very difficult decision for us and so upset that this was the result of it.The shelter manager stated that we were unfit, she was rude and condescending she made me feel really bad that it made me go back of me losing my Kloe. Like others mentioned in previous reviews i truly believe it because it happened to me. We hope that someone adopts Moe and doesnt get put to sleep because of this manager stating that people are unfit.i end saying my kids keep asking what happen to moe did moe not like us and didnt know what to say😔

I found a dog. It has a chip. The owners were notified. But since I didnt find the dog in upland, I wasnt allowed to leave him there. Its a holiday, and my rescue center here in Claremont closed. Saw the CBS news story. This seems like this shelter has done something criminal. Someone supposedly adopted this dog that was only missing for 4 days. They say the dog was sent to Arizona, disappearing only 5 minutes after the family discovered it in their back room, after their staff denied that they even had the dog, and then they called the police on this poor family. This dog, evidently worth $6,000. Yeah. I would never adopt a dog from a shelter like this. They have lost all credibility and I hope the authorities closely investigate this matter and take action.

Someone made the comment that pits were not being shown at a particular faire. Pits ARE shown at faires, and frequently adopted. But they have to be extremely careful of the pits that are brought to faires where there are many small children. The environment at a pet faire is vastly different than it is in the shelter, where the animals know their environment. Many of them get frightened from the crowds and the noise, and for a pit, it could spell disaster. They would FAR rather not bring a pit because it could possibly mistake a little child finger for a piece of food than to have to put an innocent pit down simply because it made a mistake. But the staff well knows the gentleness and lovingness of a well-behaved pit.
