Decent food and good service. I recommend making a reservation ahead of time, as it can get really busy here. The only parking available is street parking, so you may need to drive a couple blocks around to find a spot. In terms of food, their salad is definitely the best salad Ive ever tried. The dessert was also incredible. The other dishes were not good. Even the drink was way too salty. One thing I dont appreciate is them adding a 4% fee to cover employee costs. Do not pass on employee benefit costs to customers. You need to pay them better, not us. They print it with super small font at the bottom of the menu. I will decrease my tip if you add this. I dont think the restaurant is worth going back to.

First time here. Came with friend and ordered lamb and quail appetizers: Luke warm, salty and just not that good. Entree: pork chops: unfortunately, it came sliced, luke warm, bland seasoning and just overall poorly plated. The veggies weren’t bad. Service severely lacking. Sat at bar for about 5+ minutes before being approached and another 10+ to order after getting drinks. The staff are low energy and a bit pretentious. Our waiter, tall, bearded fellow was too cool to ask how our meal was, never came by to check on us…the other gal, only asked if we wanted another drink or dessert that we immediately shot down. The vibe and atmosphere not bad bar side. There are similar establishments that offer similar menu options with superior service. $200+ for mediocre food and experience.

Such a nice place with great service (Jessica, Julio and Christina went above and beyond!), tasty bites, delicious cocktails and beautiful design and ambience from day to night.I was here with a crew and shared oysters for happy hour, a mouth watering burger (and I don’t even eat red meat lol), Charred Caulilini and a Kanpachi fish dish — ALL of which were incredibly seasoned.Oh! the French fries are capable of shattering the discipline of a monk. Lol Yum!!!Bar dining and both outdoor and indoor dining all in separate sections but open with beautiful expansive windows connecting one area to another.Overall great experience! I will definitely come back!

Came here yesterday with a party of 4 for dinner and had a fantastic time and the food and service were top-notch. Everything the whole party ate was delicious and the wait staff was amazing and literally watching each table like hawks and would come by to remove plates and replenish our wine glasses 🍷. The cocktails we tried were perfectly balanced and delicious, nothing was too sweet. I will definitely be back to try more of the entrees and appetizers.The restaurant itself is beautifully designed and the furniture is great and comfortable inside the restaurant. Our party had a nice wooden table with rounded edges. You can see the Ford logos adorning the outside walls of the restaurant because it used to be a dealership.

Went for their Monday happy hour since this place been trending in San Diego for a while now. Got there right after opening and there was a line already but it moved pretty quickly. The hostesses were very friendly and explained that they are waiting to make sure whoever get seated get their drinks first and then they precede to the next party. It was helpful to know that information while waiting. And we were seated fairly quickly too.We got two dozens of oysters and yellowtail kama and well drinks. The second batch of oyster didn’t definitely taste as fresh as the first one and they were smaller in size too. The yellowtail Kama was very charred like they wanted to give me cancer or something lol. The drinks were not that special either. Everything else looked pretty expensive still even during happy hour.I probably only come back for the oysters.

The food was amazing! Everything was really good. Loved the salad, ribeye, chicken pate, goat milk pasta, etc. The shrimp was overcooked. Come here with a group so you can try a bunch of stuff. The drinks were good but a little slow to get them. Definitely worth coming back again!

We had a round of drinks here before our table was ready at the izakaya nearby. The space is truly beautiful, it caught our eye from across the street. We got in no problem, took awhile for four drinks but it’s not a club bar. The cocktails were pretty good and the sexy energy in the space made it feel dreamy.

Fantastic experience! Be prepared to drop some coin but its well worth it. From the cocktails (hello Chevelle Martini!) to the food and service, everything was excellent.Theres a separate bar area, outdoor patio then an open-air indoor space. You really cant go wrong no matter where you sit.The chicken liver mousse was the star of the night. Served with smoked shallot marmalade and chicken fat hush puppies (wow!) the dish was superb. I would go back simply for this dish.The carrots were another standout along with the Kanpachi ceviche. Both were recommended by our server. The Ahi tartare was also tasty but I wasnt a fan of the over-buttered brioche. The scallop aguachile had a beautiful presentation and while good paled in comparison to the other, more flavorful dishes.The only misstep to us (though some probably enjoy the overly sweet dessert) was the almond joy. We had envisioned a deconstructed bar style dish not a layered bowl. This was the only dish the server recommended that we didnt like. It was also on us for not asking for more detail about the dish. I wish we had opted for the apple dessert or the shaved ice with pistachio. Next time!Overall a fantastic dining experience and I cant wait to return to sample more, especially the larger plates. Those are hard to tackle with only two people as we opted for more small plates.

Came early. Got seated no questions. Server was great. Patient. Kind. Attentive.Scallops fresh. Oysters excellent. Ham light and perfect. Pasta, I liked it? Needed more texture.Half duck- okay the breast was probably one of the most well cooked duck breast I’ve had in a while. But the quarter was really over cooked. I don’t know if baked or roasted, but when a duck is over cooked it’s got that fibrous texture in your mouth.Over all a really great experience. Was still hungry. Just didn’t want anymore.

🥶 Uncomfortably cold dining experience: would have been better to sit on the patio as there were heat lamps out there. We asked a sever to turn on the heat and she claimed it was on but by the fact that everyone was wearing coats and the table next to us told her the same I call BS.Food was exceptionally good, nice atmosphere and great server. We had a large dining party and Geoffrey was very attentive and accommodating. We had a difficult diner in our group and he was very gracious about it. He also made sure I had enough to eat since I had a couple annoying dietary restrictions. Our group ordered everything on the menu and loved it all, especially the pork chop, and branzino. The goat milk cavatelli and the charred pea salad were my favorites, and despite being allergic to 1/3 of the menu I didnt get sick, so I really appreciate that!

Fort Oak is one of our favorite restaurants in San Diego. The drinks/food are always great but the staff is super friendly and kind. We had the grilled prawns and their burger (not pictured) but so delicious. The quality of food is Superb. Drinks are always spot on and if you don’t know what you want. They’ll make something you’ll like for sure! Definitely coming back once restaurant allow dine-in and want to check out brunch one of these days as well!Update: 2+ years late and still one of my favorites. Went here with the wife on a Thursday night both of us were super impressed. We were greeted by a super friendly staff and even though the place was busy--and we didnt have a reservation--we waited less than 10 minutes.Fort Oak almost literally feels like a fort. The overall space is huge and is separate into several sections consisting of indoor and outdoor seating. The decor was eclectic and seemed to be broken up stylistically according to the section of the restaurant you were in.The food was excellent. They have an array of unique starters, shared plates, and entrees that are tough to choose between. My wife and I split 4 shared plates, an appetizer, and dessert, which came to around $110 (including 3 glasses of wine). All of the plates we ordered were skillfully cooked and the presentation was on point (but we were particularly partial to the chicken fried quail and the rabbit sausage).This might be my new favorite restaurant in Mission Hills...... highly recommended.

Looking at the crowded restaurant, It looks like the dinners accept this type of flavor. I preferred less salts on the meat and the seafoods. Nevertheless, I liked the rusty open flame cooked flavors in the foods.To celebrate Father’s Day, my kids treated me for a feast at Oak Forte. They ordered liberally with six dishes. With the recommendation of our friendly waiter, we got all their customer favorite dishes including scallop aguachile, rabbit and bacon sausage, sourdough bread, burrata, garlicky hearth grilled prawn, steam clams and mussels, and goat milk cavatelli. They were all amazing dishes. I particularly like the goat milk cavatelli and the grilled prawn. The texture of the cavatelli was perfectly cooked to al dente to my liking. The goat milk added amazing flavor to the whole dish. Same for the grilled prawns. The open flame cooking elevated the taste of the prawns to a gourmet level. The sauce accompanied the prawns was just a perfect compliment to the grilled prawns. This chef knows it’s stuff.We really enjoyed the food and the sophisticated dining environment. The restaurant offers open spaces with great vibes yet it’s not intimidating, good for family dining. In fact, the dishes are meant for sharing. It was a perfect evening to celebrate Father’s Day for us.Parkings are plenty on the street.

Classy restaurant without the snobby vibe! Its a fun yet elegant place to celebrate you next special occasions ($$$). My friends took me there for a nice dinner to celebrate my new job and I was pleasantly surprised by this place. The service was impeccable. The gentlemen who came around to refill everyones water glass made sure that we had ours refilled with the sparkling water but not the regular tap water. We ordered 3 small plates to share: embered swordfish, charred caulilini, chicken fried quail. ***small plates are only good for 2, max 3, people to share. Do not expect large portion.*** My favorite was the chicken fried quail. Not too greasy. The charred caulilini was very flavorful with a mixed of nutty flavor and sweetness. My friends ordered the New York strip It was juicy and the mushroom sauce complimented it perfectly. I ordered the half duck as my dinner entree. The duck leg was cooked to perfection. Duck breast was a little fibrous-y and chewy(probably because of the fat(, but the duck leg was cooked to perfection. The duck leg was tender and scrumptious with lots of flavor. We finished with 2 desserts: the tree claire and the strawberry tart. Tree Claire was definitely light and not too sweet.

Great experience. Came here for dinner on a Thursday evening. There was a little street parking around the restaurant at meters and non-metered. Atmosphere was cool, we ate in the dining room on the right (not the bar room). Tables were small and quaint, the vibe was comfy and classy with dark accents. The food was good, if not typical new american. We tried the rabbit sausage, hamachi poke, opah pastrami toast, pork loin, goat milk cavatelli, cod, and duck. We also had a selection of mini ice cream cones for dessert. So good!!!. My stand outs were the cavatelli, cod, and opah pastrami. The pasta was sinfully good and I regretted not ordering it as my entree. The cod was beautifully cooked and also nice and light among so many different options. Great addition to the menu. The opah pastrami wasnt pastrami in the original sense but very smoky and delicious. My cocktail was forgettable, but thats entirely my fault because it was alcohol forward and had me very buzzy so I forgot how yummy it was. We were a table of four and for all of our food and drinks the bill was very reasonable. I recommend trying Fort Oak. Id like to come back to explore the drink menu at the bar as I feel that was a big piece we missed out on.

I was dining alone and sat at the bar and the bartender was very knowledgeable and helpful. I made my own tasting menu and cocktail pairings. It turned out wonderful, but expensive.Scallop aguachile was amazing. Great vibrant, and fresh flaovrs.Charred Caulilini was probably my favorite. i loved charred flavors and with the aioli was amazing. I seriously thought of ordering it again. I have read some reviews saying it was too salty. i can see that, but i love salt i suppose!Coppa ham. it was good, but didnt stand out to me. The cheese provided most of the flavor and was melted, but cold when i received it. Perhaps of it was hot and recently melted upon receiving it would be better. i tried adding the apricot mustarda to it, but still wanted more of a traditional mustard flavor.Goat milk Cavatelli was good. There was small specks of truffle in the dish and it was obvious they used truffle oil to enhance the flavor of the truffles. To me, it was too much truffle as the oil overpowered the other natural flavors. Dont get me wrong, Id you like truffle, youll love this dish. I just prefer a more organic and subtle flavor.Both deserts were good, but nothing mind blowing. I liked the cinnamon roll bread pudding better than the chocolate turtle.All drinks were well balanced and tasty.

I know people like to give 5 stars for this restaurant. I do not for the following reasons:- They welcome you on the door in front of the bar and they walk you to the restaurant and the first things that you will see are 2 trash bins on the outside part of the bars counter !!! Not really appetizing or welcoming when the restaurant by itself is very well designed.- They want to do special upscale food, but they add too much ingredients. Simplicity can is often better.- Almost all food is spicy. So if you have any health issu (like Crohn disease) you will have a very limited choice.- Deserts are very well presented and good sized, but for the taste they arent really unforgettablePeople working there deserve 5 stars. Their 2 simple plates (the charred branzino and the NY prime strip) are excellent, I think their branzino is the best one I ever tasted.They can easily reach the 5 stars, they do not need a lot of improvements to do it.

Beautiful space, lucky to not have a wait walking in on a Friday night, enjoyed the uniqueness of the scallops, clams/mussels, and rockfish dishes, good grilled bread but the raw scallop smell was quite off-putting but didnt get sick! I didnt like the popcorn flavor and crunch on top of the rockfish but was fun to try popped sorghum! We Enjoyed the cocktail menu, but both seemed quite fizzy and watery.

Dont eat here if you dont like spicy food. I can take some heat but all dishes we ordered were borderline too spicy for our taste (ahi tartare, lamb kefta and caulilini); definitely in order for them to take it down a notch. Other than that, great quality and presentation. Service was a bit slow and we had to ask for water refills twice. Nice ambience.

Excellent! Definitely playing up the chat flavors but things were delicious and complex. The seafood was generally good. The crudo and the grilled Branzino were fresh and prepared perfectly. Also the charred vegetables sides always added great complex sauces and combined textures. Pork chop was also cooked well and highly seasoned. Strong cocktail program. Classic San Diego indoor-outdoor set up where you cant tell if your table is in the dining room or the patio. They kept the feel of the old dealership which was neat! Vegetable dishes were so fun and satisfying, especially when you wipe the plate with the sourdough. Roasted carrots were an explosion of flavors, as was the caulilini. Oreo beignets were a little on the undercooked side but a fun option. Mezcal drinks were also great!

I saw that Fort Oak has an Oyster happy hour on Mondays so I really wanted to try it out. We sat outside which was comfortable since there are plenty of heaters. We had a couple dozen oysters (very delicious) and then also the tuna tartare which was probably one of my top favorite tartares ever. For drinks I had the Shelby cobra (negroni) and a Bel air nomad (mezcal cocktail) both were very good. Service was also great. I hope to come back soon for a full dinner.

Though we had one oyster which really shouldnt have passed a QA test, it just looked like the remnants of an oyster - there was almost nothing in the shell. Still a great deal and all of the other oysters were great.( ) I thought the fries were just okay - they could have been a bit crispier but the togarashi aioli was really good.(+) Cocktails were stellar, and a great deal for happy hour.(+) Indoor and outdoor seating allows for dog friendly vibes.Well definitely be back! Food and service was great! The appetizers were amazing and so were the entrees. I had oysters for the first time and actually liked them (didn’t think that was going to happen). What a gem of a restaurant. Vibrant without being loud. Great outdoor dining area. We had the trout and the pork chops and both were excellent. We also had the blueberry lemonade and the pineapple limeade, and both were super refreshing on a hot day. The staff is fantastic as well.

Oyster Monday Happ Hour Review:Line can get pretty busy, took our group of 5 about an hour to be seated. Doors open at 4, so arrive earlier. The oysters served at HH were Kumai and were delicious! You can only order 2 dozen at a time per table. The burger was great as well, comes with caramelized onions and cooked to perfection.Well, worth the wait!

We found this place for brunch near our Airbnb. We glad we chose this spot! It was not too crowded and the food was A-MAZ-ING. I got the chicken fried quail and French toast and never looked back. The quail had so many flavors which was surprisingly delightful. It was a mix of savory and sweet. The French toast was incredible too. Not too sweet, and not to soaked. It was fluffy and cakey, YUM. The servers were very nice and accommodating to my other friend’s diet restrictions (gluten and dairy free). The coffee was good and plentiful. Love it when my coffee cup is always full at brunch.

Just a fantastic place. Our server was so on top of things, we were joking that there was actually two of him. Excellent service from everyone we interacted with. Unbelievably one of the best meals my family has had. Not that we are food snobs but we live in the NYC area and there are numerous choices for great food. This place rates with the best of them.The reason I had to rate the service under a 5 is I was asked when I ordered my cocktail if I wanted a big cube, I said yes (it goes great with a Boulevardier) and low and behold I was charged $2.00 for that big cube. Its not the $2.00 but I should have been told there was a charge when the wait staff asked if I wanted it. And by the way the place is not reasonable it is expensive. Made a reservation for Monday night for a birthday, and I’d recommend that especially since quite a few SD restaurants are closed on Mondays. We had a great experience for from the quick and friendly service to the diverse food options. There are many vegetarian friendly options while still having strong fish and meat dishes. But, note they do rotate their menu! The hostess and service staff were amazing! Super helpful and top-notch. The food was... serviceable for the price point. Id say with the quality of food found in SD, this restaurant may be a little overpriced.Also their bread guy was out that day, which meant no sourdough bread.The dining area features a lot of concrete and glass, so the place gets very noisy. There is also an outdoor setting that gets used when the indoor is used up, and there is insufficient heating or coverage out there for cold nights.The part that blew my mind was when the check came, and they included a 4% Living Wage Fee, explaining they do it to remain competitive with other restaurants salaries and to provide benefits. The fact that this expensive place is too cheap to pay their staff the already low wages that tipping is forced to supplement, and that they force their diners to pay for this compensation is absolutely absurd.

This was my 5th and sadly last time at Fort Oak. Background, we like to come on Mondays for the Oyster happy hour . We get there early so we can make the 6 oclock cut off. The oysters are fresh and the drinks are good as well.Today 8)14)23 we arrived at 420 pm. An hour later, the lady in charge informed the line that they might not get seated. She claimed it was a capacity issue although we noted plenty of empty seats in the bar area as late as 545.Anyway, when the clock struck 6 and we were next after a party of 6, we were informed it was too late for the happy hour. The bossy lady informed me that they the party in front of us has been waiting a long time and would be seated but we wouldnt. I noted we had been there a long time as well. I mentioned the empty tables and she told me not to tell her how to do her job. As a management consultant I have advised many fortune 500 companies and small businesses. This person does not represent your business well and her inability to accept criticism or to be flexible is a negative mark on this business. Hopefully, shell learn.

Went with a party of 6. Waited around the bar for everyone to arrive and ordered cocktails. The drinks were great! After being seated, it took a while to get our food ordered and then receive our food as well. It couldve been that it was a Saturday and a full house, but we were in good company and loved our waiter so we patiently waited. This is an update as of June 19, 2023....This was the worst meal out Ive had in the last year plus. Ive been to this restaurant many times both pre and post pandemic, thus was eager to return with another couple. Boy, what a mismanaged dinner experience!!!Our dinner was at 6;00 on a recent Monday. First mistake… . As Mondays are oysters happy hour in the bar and patio, and all servers were focused on those areas while neglecting the diners in the dining room. We waited more than 10 minutes before I got up to tell the hostess and seek a server as no one had been to our table. When someone finally came over, we then asked for wine glasses to be brought to our table so we could enjoy the chilled champagne we brought. Another 10 minutes before the glasses arrived.Our server, May or Meg? was hardly attentive to us the entire evening. Support and bus staff were equally absent and inattentive. When one of the bussers removed dishes, he was too quick to notice liquid remaining on the dish and inadvertently spilled it onto my shirt!!It took forever to get anyone to come to our table except when it was time to present the check. When we discussed the situation with the manager upon exiting the restaurant, she seemed overwhelmed by the circumstances presented.What a shameful experience. Needless to say, I will Not Return!!

Love the woodfired cooking at Brad Wise restaurants. Fort Oak was another great dining experience. The actual restaurant space is smaller, intimate with large windows along one side of the restaurant looking out into the patio. The ambience is classy, but cozy, in a dimly lit, and darker accented dining room. The bar looks like a cool spot to pull up and have a cocktail.We had a slight issue in that our reservation was mistakenly changed from 8 to 7 after we made it through Tock, however, the hostess team took care of it and got us seated at a table inside. The table was set for 6, but cozily accommodated 8 and with the emphasis on group dining, it made for a great dinner out. May was a friendly guide for the night, highlighting the favorites and helping us order enough food to sample across the menu.They have a great selection of whiskies on the shelf and a nice range of cocktails. Cocktails are San Diego priced, so around $16-18. The two cocktails (Roadmaster and Bel Air Nomad) that were tried were the one element of the meal that felt underwhelming, so the group transitioned to wine for the rest of the meal, which was a great complement to the outstanding food, especially the meats. The Chappellet was a great recommendation from our server and was a solid accompaniment.The food was outstanding, nothing on the menu missed and the meat selections, as expected, were the highlights. Our server May provided expert guidance in terms of number of dishes for a group of 8 to share and we had just enough food to leave everyone walking away satisfied. We had two plates of each of the Sourdough bread, Sugar Snap Pea Salad, Charred Caulilini, Carrots, Lamb Kefta, and Chicken Liver, and then one each of the Pork Chop, Ribeye, and Wagyu. The bread was phenomenal, just a hint of smokiness, perfectly baked, with awesome butter to accompany it. The roasted carrots and caulilini were outstanding combinations of flavors and textures. The Sugar Snap Pea salad was a great recommendation to have something fresh and light amidst some of the heavier, smokier dishes. The lamb kefta and chicken liver were both excellent. The meats were perfection, with the Ribeye standing slightly above the Pork Chop and NY Strip. The Apple Crisp was sadly out for the night, so we did not end up getting dessert.Definitely recommend for groups for a communal dining experience.

Excellent in every way! The flavors are so incredibly rich and complex, yet each element is distinct and present in every bite. The Lamb Kefta, Ahi Tartare, and Charred Caulilini were inimitable. The cocktails were beautifully balanced. Even the iced tea was notably high quality. The quality of the food is only elevated by the quality of the staff. They operate at the highest level but with all the charm of your favorite local joint. My wife and I returned to Fort Oak for another helping when we were looking to celebrate her birthday this past weekend. Reservations secured, we looked forward to a Friday out as a couple, sans young children. Upon arrival we were alerted that the restaurant was quite busy that evening and that our patio reservation would not garner us a seat on the featured patio from website photos, but rather another patio around the corner. The kind hostess did offer that we could “sit on stools at the bar if we preferred a more lively scene.” We conveyed that bar seats were not really in line with my wife’s birthday expectations, so we followed the hostess out to the sidewalk to access what will here-fore be labeled the “Afterthought Patio” where I can only imagine the rubbish bins had stood prior to Fort Oak needing three additional tables that evening.We were pleasantly greeted by our server for the evening who efficiently took our cocktail order and we were off and running. Selections from the raw menu, greens, and shareable sections all graced our table, leading up to the star of the dinner, the $75 wagyu strip steak. All the food was quite tasty with meticulous presentation, though we did feel 2 hours from seating to entree delivery was a tad long. However, food does taste better when you’re hungry!Apparently our server didn’t get the message that we were celebrating a birthday because after our entree, the check arrived and the kitchen lights that had previously been illuminating the Afterthought Patio through large windows, were extinguished. Our time was up, so it seemed, and it only required a quick search inside the main part of the restaurant to find our server so that we could pay our bill.I can see why Michelin awarded Fort Oak a Plate Honoree, it’s just too bad that everything else about the customer experience beyond the plate has yet to catch up. At this price point, Michelin Star restaurant Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad is the better choice and where we will head for future celebratory dinners.

Was so excited to try this place. Sister restaurants are fantastic. Service was just fine. Food, not so much. Not clear to me what the hype is. Sort of a joke that you have to pay for bread that is under par compared to other restaurants similarly priced (Eddie V) who serve better bread gratis. Read some of the other low reviews who claimed they vomited after eating there. Same issue with us sorry to say, but not from eating charcoal in the iced cream (although that may have been a buyer beware thing). Couple next to us on their anniversary din did not seem super happy either but we didn’t ask, just paid up and left to eat elsewhere. I so wanted this restaurant to be good…

A great broth that you could dip your bread in with a substantial amount Of clams. The clams were lacking. Im sad to say This dish is not that good anymore. My husband and I ordered the “charred ice cream” which isn’t charred at all - It’s vanilla ice cream with activated charcoal in it. For a restaurant of this caliber, you would think they would hire professional and mature managers who know what customer service is about and know how to properly and maturely take care of customers, especially when customers express concern about the freshness of the oysters they were served.A friend and I met for dinner at Fort Oak this evening and I walked away in total dismay if not digust. The young blonde female manager who was on duty couldnt have been more unconcerned about our health safety as customers... Instead of doing the right thing when informed about our having been served bad oysters, she instructed the waitress who had taken the remaining oysters away to bring them back to our table, as is... even though the platter may have contained tainted oysters.To make it worse, when we asked the manager why she would have the waitress bring the platter back to us in its original state with potentially bad shell fish on it, she took care of it by just grabbing the suspect oysters off the platter right in front of us and presenting the platter back to us with the remaining goodoysters... She was 100% unapologetic and really did nothing to take care of us as customers. Who handles shellfish situations like that?? She obviously was not trained properly or really doesnt give a damn. She certainly doesnt have the skills or attitude to be a manager at an upscale restaurant like Fort Oak.My husband and I are Mission Hills locals and have been dining at Fort Oak since it opened. Needless to say, we will never be back and will share this tainted experience with our local friends and family.

This is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in SD. Been here twice now and have had roughly 80% of the menu. All incredible. The caullini is outstanding. The ahi tartare is otherworldly. Ate here last night and had a similar experience to others. The decor is beautiful and the place has a nice ambiance. All of the food was delicious and interesting! The service, however, was awful. Our server never seemed to be available and when he was his comments were off base and rude. The bussing staff seemed to be trying to pick up the slack but over did it. We were asked if we were done eating at least 5-6 times while food was still on the plates. At least they were all super polite and trying to be helpful, which is way more than can be said for the server. This place could be really cool if they get their service staff in line.

Our party (4) recently dined at Ford Oak and we came away feeling a bit underwhelmed despite a respectable dining experience with SOME standout dishes.AMBIENCE:Cut from a former Ford dealership that is partitioned into four distinct dining spaces, which, curiously works well and feels open and airy. Sleek and stylish with perfect lighting and ample heaters. The distinct bar occupies the original dealership space and is a great centerpiece. All in all, very comfortable and inviting!SERVICE:We were seated by a less than enthusiastic host with nary a smile who turned on our heater without the least bit of concern for it actually functioning - it did not. It almost felt as if we were imposing on her alone time. Suffice it to say we were a bit cold, perfectly matching our hosts disposition. Once the wait staff joined us, the problem was quickly solved and we were happy again.Our server was cool and calm - flawless execution with good suggestions and perfect attention to coursing out our meal. Our only complaint is that said server was a bit too cool and calm, lacking some personal touches that would have been nice - someone in our party had a birthday and there wasnt a peep or attempt by the staff to help us celebrate.FOOD:Lamb mortadella: amazing presentation with unique flavors that all came together wonderfully - only complaint was the extreme saltiness that came through. But $17! That stung.Beef Tartare: This fell flat on its face. One in our party was a native Parisian and has tartare practically every month - either dining out or prepared at home and was hoping for something special. Sadly, a preponderance of hazelnuts and the overly chunky texture of both the beef and nuts threw the whole dish off. Worse yet, the taste was bland and the nutty flavors and awkward truffle infusion did nothing to rectify its flaws.Barbecued Half Duck: WOW! Just amazing!! Spectacular preparation! This was the highlight of the meal and something that wed take a gamble on coming back, if only for this one dish. If only we had just gorged on this unique delight - we all would have been better off.Cardamom Beignets: Words do not describe how disappointing this dish is. The cardamom doesnt even come through in the slightest and the blueberries, possibly the only redeeming feature of the dish, are pickled, adding insult to injury. All you have left to contend with is this offensively bitter and slightly citrus bolus of food posing as a beignet.Tonights Mr. Trustee Ice Cream: Wow!! Amazingly rich ice-cream. If chocolate gelato married insanely rich chocolate mousse and had progeny, this would be it.In the end, the sometimes disjointed dishes, a couple offensive ones, uneven service, and extreme prices (especially the wine) make this an experience where you leave feeling like youve been taken advantage of, especially if spending close to $400 for a party of 4 (one child in the mix and without a hefty wine bill) is not something you are used to. We are not wealthy and it was a special occasion - something that was only mentioned by the staff once even though we mentioned it while making reservations.On a good day, you may be extremely happy and come away jubilant. On a bad day, Fort Oak may leave a slightly sad and sour taste in your mouth with a wallet weighing dramatically less than when you first stepped foot through the door.

Wow! Everything single thing we ordered here blew us away! Even just the sourdough bread with sea salt and whipped butter was next level. Most of their menu consists of share plates, but that lets you try a bunch of different things. I am only giving them four stars for the following reasons. 1. Street parking only and 2. Their name is not on the building. I knew the area so I didnt WAZE or Google directions. How hard can it be to find a place in an area you know the cross streets. So I go to the intersection and where the restaurant should; be is a building that says, Ford or something else misleading. It does NOT say, Ft Oak from the three directions I approached the building from. Only from the west can you see a small Ft Oak sign. Fort oak...WOW !!!! My wife and I are visiting SD on our “baby moon” and got the suggestion to try this restaurant from a good friend in the area, gosh I am so glad we took the advice!!My wife and I were both impressed by the food and awesome service. Our server Alyssa was very knowledgeable on the menu and very attentive throughout our meal, the manager Jimmy was also working the dining room and touching tables and assisting his staff. Even the support staff was amazing, the busser Daniel never let our waters get below half full.As far as the food it was all INCREDIBLE, the cavatelli, halibut and carrots were just a few highlights.Can not wait to come back on our next visit to SD.

This used to be my favorite restaurant in Mission Hills not only for Sunday brunch but also for dinner.This Sunday nothing seemed to go right at Fort Oak. First, service was very slow in getting our meal, which can be forgiven on a busy Sunday afternoon. Once the food arrived the poached eggs on the Benedict were overcooked, the French toast was dry as if it had not been soaked in the custard, and the quail was over fried and burnt.The server returned the Benedict to the kitchen and new eggs were made but they used the same corned beef and English muffin rather than making the dish over completely. My brunch mate was so hungry she went ahead and ate her meal but had to get more syrup because the French toast was that dry.The manager comped our two cocktails and once again said that she was sorry for the problems we had experienced.I will not be going back because the disappointment was just too great!

The food here was truly delicious but I have never felt more uncomfortable in what should be a classy, easy going atmosphere. Im leaving this review because of the service we received. Our waiter was condescending and arrogant when he did attend to us (no eye contact or smiling, rushing us and straight up walking away when we were making a decision about 2 dishes, and responding to our comments about the delicious food with obviously, etc). Not to mention he was seemingly impossible to reach the majority of the time, even when within ear and eye shot. It was awkward, obvious and we felt unwelcome. I have never had this kind of experience which is why I feel the need to leave this review. Fort Oak seemed like a great place to spend our evening at first. The ambiance was nice and the bartender was friendly enough. However, things deteriorated as the night went on. We came for happy hour and my boyfriend ordered the beer on happy hour. When asked what I wanted, I said Do you have a cabernet on happy hour? The bartender said Yes, a very nice one. I said Great, Ill take one. We ended up sharing 3 between the two if us. We then ordered oysters which we saw was $1 each on happy hour. These took almost half an hour to come. We then ordered the Wagyu steak entree for $44. We both agreed that it was very tough and had gristle, which was nothing like wagyu steak we ever had before. The bartender gave us a song and dance about how it was a leaner type of Wagyu and cant be expected to be as tender. We sent it back and got branzino, which was much more edible. We also ordered a side of cualilini, which took forever to come, about the time we were finished with our dinner. Then came the bill, which was a rude surprise. The wine was $18 a glass, not $7, as we expected. The oysters were $3 each, not $1 each. The bartender said that I asked for a cab so he gave me a cab. He just didnt bother to tell me it wasnt on happy hour and chose the most expensive cab they had. He also said the $1 oysters were only on Mondays. Our fault for not reading the fine print. Needless to say, the whole experience left a very bad taste in our mouths and we definitely wont be going back. There are too many much better restaurants around San Diego.

To consume, we began with the chicken fried quail which I was at first reluctant regarding but eventually was an incredible choice!
