Came in today for the first time for an oil change. They were very nice and had great communication. I dropped my car off and the staff called me a few hrs later to update me after assessing my car and when it would be ready to pick up. Excellent service!

I was able to have my car taken care of not only for the oil change I came in for, but for a flat tire I didnt know I had, and some maintenance work that had been put off by my previous mechanic for far too long. Since it took much longer than expected, I was able to get a ride home and back again while my car was being worked on. Everything that needed to be done was thoroughly explained to me so I could understand. Everyone was very courteous, I received a nice discount, and the prices were very reasonable. This was my first time at Family Auto Service, and I was very satisfied. I would definitely come back.

Joe is the best!! Going to Family Auto I know they are going to be honest with me and make sure my car is safe on the road. 10/10 would recommend taking your car in if you need anything from an oil change, to tires, to more complex fixes, brakes, transmission work etc. Most recently got both cars oil changes done and even though I told them there was no rush for my car (took my partners car first thing in the morning then switched them after his was done) and that I could pick it up on Monday when they were open since they were so busy, Joe and the team still got mine done same day! Love the service and the team at Family Auto

If you want to wait over 1.5 hours for an oil change with an appointment then this is the place for you. This is the second time I’ve come here and I was promised a discount for my next oil change from Mark since my first oil change here took over 2 hours! I mentioned the discount before the oil change and the mechanic acknowledged me and walked away. After waiting 1.5 hours my car is done and I am charged the full price. The manager, not Mark, comes out and says that I should have said something before my oil change and talks down to me before he walks away. Please don’t waste your time here and do not believe what they say.

Did a great job of repairing my car, but never reached out to me during the process until it was complete. It would have been nice to get called when they needed approval for repair or to tell me when the vehicle would be ready. I had to call periodically to inquire about what needed to be repaired or replaced and give approval for repair.

I came in on a Saturday to have an oil change. Some events took place and it required my oil change to be rescheduled for the following Monday. Joe, the service person in the front, took care of me and I was out before the designated time he gave me for the oil change.Good service, good people, I recommend to anyone with auto needs.

My quote was for over $3,000 for suspension work. I did a simple Google to see that was a bit much, over $2,000 more. I said no thank you, even explained why. Took it to Johns Automotive in Mission Valley, and got my $1,200 some quote! DO NOT go here, unless you enjoy spending Thousands more!

I actually went to them twice. The first time was for a tire service. The second time was for an oil change and because my car started making noises. I thought that it would be good to take it back to the same place to get fixed. No, they said they could not service me. But they did recommend me a spark plug prior to that...? They also accused me of illegal activities even though they imputed my information incorrectly. In the end, I ended up going to another service in the area to get my oil change. It also stopped making the noise after the oil change by the way! (To add, I came in for oil service as recommended by the sticker.)tl;dr do not recommend =(

Alignment. Before coming to this location in La Mesa Family auto, I called them to set up the appointment to check my car wheel alignment, explain the problem, and they agreed to check and do alignment if needed. I told them it would be by 5 pm, and I came at 4:50 pm. When I came they told me to come the next day. One of them started crying me about his mortgage, which is nothing had to do with me or with my car repair. I strongly recommend not to come to this shop. Lack of intelligence.Poor communication.

Joe, Mark, and their team did an incredible job providing a tune up and service for our 2002 Winnebago Rialta, brakes, rotors, new tires, alignment, spark plugs, ignition coils, serpentine belt, etc. He made it so we could drive it back to Colorado confident that it would make it safely. We appreciate their honesty and attention to detail, and appreciated that they had an RV lift in their garage bay. I would highly recommend this shop for any of your vehicle needs. Great people.

I came to this place last week regarding my car stalling and not starting.I was told my alternator had low voltage and it was going to cost me around 1,100 dollars to fix and along with another issue that would cost 1,900 dollars.I knew it wasn’t the right diagnosis (and knew that price was absolutely ridiculous) and decided to take it to get a second opinion after I was charged 180 dollars for a “diagnosis”.I had my alternator tested for free at O’Reillys and was told the alternator was working just fine and it obviously wasn’t the cause of my car stalling.After taking it in to a second mechanic in the Hillcrest area, it turns out it was just my crank sensor and it only cost me less than 150 dollars to replace and I had my oxygen sensor replaced and a oil change. It only cost me 430 dollars and I was sent on my way with a perfectly working car.I am highly disappointed that I was taking advantage of by this joke of a place because I assumed they think I was not knowledgeable on vehicles since I am a young woman in my mid-20s. I debated on demanding a refund for my diagnosis but decided it’s not worth my time trying to argue.Simply put, I am never coming back to this place again. I do not recommend coming here if you don’t wish to be taken advantage of and be over charged. I’m actually surprised they are highly rated and I regret trusting this place with my car.

I called ahead to get quote for oil change and asked if I needed appt. They told me no appt necessary and cost would be $68.??. When I got there 2hr wait to do it and cost was about $106. After telling him of the estimate, that was the charge. Took 1.5 hrs to get it done. They said I needed new tires, so I got quote.

This was my second time to Family Auto, first time to the La Mesa one. So far I have to say this is where I’ll be taking my vehicle from now on! Nothing but respect and amazing top notch work. Took my car in with squeaky breaks, quoted me ~$1100 to replace front breaks. Got a second opinion at TN Auto, quoted me ~$450 for the same job. Got the work done there and they did great. Can’t be sure, but seemed like maybe Family Auto saw a inexperienced younger dude and tried to get what they could out of me. Wouldn’t recommend.

If your “family” steals money from you and damages your car then “family” auto services is for you. Took my car in for a diagnosis. They quoted me a new turbo for $2800. I decided to diagnose it myself. When I picked up my car my center console armrest was broken and money was stolen from my center console. It was less than $20 but it’s still not right. Mark was not helpful at all. He told me over the phone that my car looks like I work in construction, like my car was worth less value than others. He didn’t make it right. I then diagnosed it myself and it turned out being a vacuum actuator. $30 part. I will never go here again. If you decide to go here go with Joe and not Mark. Joe was the only one trying to make things right with this inconvenient situation by offering a free oil change and alignment. I paid $180 for a failed diagnosis, stolen money, and a broken center console.

I go for my quarterly oil changes and any additional maintenance.On 2/4/23 I went to have my spark plugs, breaks, and engine air filter replaced. In addition to my oil change my total came out to be around $1,300. They are always giving coupons for that I can apply towards my service and I very much appreciate that.I also enjoy how patient and educated the team is. They take the time to show me my car parts and explain what is needed and if I cannot afford to have it done in that service then they will tell me amount of time I have left before it becomes even more costly to repair.Thank you to Mark and the Family Auto Team for taking such great care of me and my Hyundai.

Brought it in for just a a/c leak. Found out that my raditator fan punctured a hole in the suction line hose. Had to replace my raditator for the clips holding my raditator fan broke. I also ask to fix one of my tire pressure sensor. They recommend to change my shocks which I need to change along the way. They got that all fix. They also help me save 700 giving me a discount on the labor.

Good service although I had to call back several times to speak to the front desk clerk who originally helped me with my auto repairs, I was disconnected twice, and put on hold twice and nobody responded, after 5 calls the the person I was trying to speak with with my concern finally called me back.Each time I called I was told I eould be helped in a moment, did not happen that way. I feel it lack of communication between the companies employees. They did however give me a courtesy ride home so I didnt have to wait while the work was being done on my vehicle and they also picked me up at home to retrieve my vehicle when the work was completed. That really helped me out.

I was a long time customer for over three years. I was extremely disappointed. The last service was in February 2022. I was grossly overcharged for very minor work. I had to take my car to another mechanic and was advised the parts they used on my Jaguar were aftermarket and cheap and the issue I was having was not fixed. They did unnecessary work and charged me over $2000 for parts and services. I didn’t need I took my car in for one issue. I took my car in for one issue and left with another issue that cost $2000. If you’ve had any good luck with this company, you’re lucky because my last experience was a nightmare.

Great customer service! As far as I can tell; quality repairs too. But a little too focused on sales and $$$. This was actually my 2nd time using this shop and just like the first time I went, I got a list of things my car needed to have done. Its questionable to me whether these things all actually need to be done though. The first time I was there (17,000 miles ago) they replaced my cabin air filter for me without my consent. This was upsetting to me since I, personally, replaced that filter only 9,000 miles before I was there and with a carbon-infused brand that I prefer which helps make the cabin more fresh. Whichever brand they replaced it with made my car smellier. They replaced the serpentine belt on that first visit as well. During this visit, Mark was trying to tell me that it needed to replace it again however, I caught him by reminding him that it was THEIR shop that had replaced it, and only 17,000 miles beforehand. Mistake? I dont know. Although the repairs that they did all seem ok, I just get an iffy feeling about this place. After this visit, Im pretty sure they lost me as a customer since I do actually know about cars and they got caught trying to sell more than what was needed. They ALWAYS try to get tires on your car whether theyre needed or not (again, Im not stupid about cars or tires.) They quoted me $700 to do my Outer Socket and Inner Tie Rods but my American Tire Depot (that I know and love) is doing it today for $436!! I dont know... Its just not worth the gamble.

The workers there are very kind and do great work! Brought my car in to have the brakes checked and strange rubbing sound checked out, and they found the issue within an hour or so. After giving the go ahead to do the repairs, they finished the work within a few hours, despite the part shortage right now! Driving away without hearing that sound was like heaven, and now I no longer have to worry about my brakes while my kids are in the car. Highly reccomend bringing your car if you need work done!

They took care of it and found the control arm bushings were basically gone. They got it in and out the same day. I came back here to have my car serviced after previously having an issue they don’t service. They were so kind and informative I knew I would come back.... fast forward. Brought my car in for an oil change and I thought I needed new brakes because my break light was on... turns out my pads are still good after a complimentary inspection. I appreciated the honesty... my car was due for a tune up so because they were honest and forthcoming I went ahead with a break flush, new spark plugs, fuel injector flush and an oil change. They texted me throughout the day and gave me a whole list of recommendations with a level of priority. Awesome work! Awesome staff! Went in for some driveshaft work, and in the process the mechanic noticed my water pump was leaking. A lot of shops will just TELL you what they found, and ask if youd like to get it fixed. But with all the issues Bobs ended up finding, they SHOWED me first hand and informed me if it was a major issue or if it was one I could hold off on. Daniel (the front desk guy that was helping me) even took off some labor and parts charges in the end! Very professional of them. The shop got all the work done in a fair amount of time, the free shuttle service is a great idea, and the prices are fair. The one and only complaint I have is I wish the front office kept me more up to date about the work being done....I had to call twice to get an update on one of my visits. But, it did seem like a very busy day; all the bays were occupied. So that experience may not be the norm. Im still a very happy customer and will be coming back for all my auto work!

Came to them for an oil change; evidently they sized us up as a young out of state couple who would have no idea about cars, and tried to pull the iconic fear-mongering to replace our cabin filter, engine filter, and drive belt and charge us out the nose for it. Would have expected this from jiffy lube, not here. Had me come back into the garage to show me gross filters and then ASKED me to leave when they were going to put them back in my car, the full dog and pony show. I dont know how well you can measure workman quality from an oil change, but to their credit they seem to have done a fine job with that. I brought my vehicle because my car was making a lurching motion. I was a little wary about bringing it in because the last few times I brought it, they couldn’t figure out what was going on. Long story short, my dad was able to figure out and fix the problem. I spent well over $1,000- probably closer to $2k- for them to not be able to figure this out.Fast forward to this past Monday.When I called, a man named Jim answered and set me up for an appointment the next day. I met him the next morning and he was very personable, professional, and upfront about what the process would be as far as figuring out what tests would be done to diagnose what was wrong with my car. I go home. Sure enough, I got a call about 40 minutes later. The mechanic, Lance, called and told me what he found. I was a little nervous about the quote he gave me since it would be over $1k again. I was a bit reluctant at first, but I needed my car back in working condition. So, I gave Lance the go-ahead.Around 4pm, he calls me to tell me my car was finished. I ended up getting there late due to a work deadline (sorry, Jim and Lance) but they waited for me. Lance went into a little more detail about what had happened and how that was causing the lurching as well as the alignment he did on my tires. At that point I handed over my credit card, hoping that this visit was worth the price I would be paying for it.What a difference. As soon as I headed out of the lot and drove down the road, I could feel the difference immediately. I feel like my car is driving better now than when I first purchased it. The way the car maneuvers is so smooth, that at first I was almost in disbelief. I wrote all this to say that I am so happy and so relieved that I trusted my vehicle to Jim and Lance. I had been going to Family Auto for a couple of years before the pandemic hit. I don’t know if the owners sold, or if all the old employees left, but it seems like it’s been a change for the best. I am incredibly grateful for Jim and Lance (especially being a female customer, you never know if you’re getting ripped off or not) and for their transparency. I will definitely go back to them now that I feel truly confident in their ability to fix my car, and to recommend them to my family and friends.

Saying both pressure lines were ruined, and needed a new reservoir.After checking on line for similar quotes, I found none above $1000. The staff was friendly and helpful. We talked about the tires, originally I was just going to get 2 but looked online and saw the buy three and get one free and decided to go for that. When they had the wheels off, they took a look at the suspension and showed me where it was leaking. I asked about delaying it and they said that I didnt have to do it ever. It would mean a very bumpy ride until I got it repaired. I had been noticing that it has been riding very rough for several months, so after thinking about it for awhile, I told them to do it and asked if it could be finished by noon. They said they would try and called me at 12:20 to say it was finished. Good job. The car now rides very smoothly and is also quieter.

I needed brakes and the rain was coming, I couldn’t afford to miss work or rent a vehicle while my car was being repaired, did I mention I was also hurting financially. I called Family Auto Service just for a quote over the phone. I ended up taking my car in for a free inspection, they offered me a great deal I could afford, and were able to take care of my brakes the same day. I brought my Porsche in for its smog service And dealt with Gary as a service writer and Tommy as a technician. Both of them are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. They were communicative, efficient, and extremely friendly. I highly recommend them for any of your service needs. Tommy even went so far to give me a call after I left their facility because he saw a couple drops of coolant in his stall That he keeps extremely clean. His phone call was just to let me know that he saw those drops and to check underneath my car when it was parked to see if it was possibly from my vehicle even thought he didn’t see anything when it was in. Turns out that someone had just walked through his stall with a little bit of fluid on a part or can etc. that had dripped off. I was charged $180/tire + shipping (near $750 total) when they cost $130/tire + free shipping from the manufacturer ($520). Yes, thats how long it has been since my bad experience at this place. I never bother to leave a review back then, but Ive been meaning to do it since.I used to owned a 2010 Toyota Yaris sedan, bought it brand new from the dealership, and took it to the dealership for service until it was paid off in 2015. The dealership was a bit too far from my house so I decided to take it to an independent shop for regular maintenance. I felt good taking it somewhere independent and family owned. I felt like I was actually helping a family and their employees by taking my business to them and not some company dealership network.The vehicle was in very good condition, no issues what so ever, after all it was a Toyota. I baby my cars and I knew the vehicle didnt have any major issues. My first visit to Bob was for a regular oil change. They inspected my car and immediately came out with a laundry list of things I needed to get replace because they were aging. The guy helping me out was very firm on the issues and made it sound like things were just about to fall apart. He went on to rant about preventive maintenance (which I do agreed with) and all about that. But I just couldnt believe my vehicle needed over $4,000 in maintenance. The car had never had any issues and I kept up with my maintenance at the dealership for the 5 years I had the car.I decided to just go with my gut feeling and not replace something that wasnt broken. The only item I decided to replaced was the serpentine belt. A week later I started hearing a loud screeching noise every time I turn on the vehicle (only when the engine was cold). I knew it was the belt, it was loose or something. I took the vehicle back to them and told them about the noise, told them they have to make it tighter for the noise to stop. But they refuse to do any work because they couldnt reproduce the noise (of course, the engine was already warm up when I drove up to their shop). I had this issue for almost two years. I made numerous request for them to fix it under their warranty and I never got a resolution. The guy that was always trying to up sell me parts and services increasingly became noticeably upset with me. I could just tell, every time I go in the office for an oil change and to tell them about the noise he would just react to me like if I was trying to get a free service. I cant remember his name, I have the original invoice with a Gary name on it but I just dont know if he was the person officially signed off on the invoice. I knew he drove a yellow Jeep Wrangler, two door, always parked right outside the front door.Two years after this I had enough of trying to deal with them and simply returned my business to the dealership where I was always treated as a family. At the dealership they not only talk to you nicer, but if Im wrong on something then the mechanic doing the work will come out with the manager and show me how or why something is right or wrong. At Bobs is the other way around, you are the customer and you dont know anything about mechanic work so you should just take our word for it.After going back to the dealership they told me the serpentine belt was loose and they would adjust it free of charge. How about that!Also, not sure how a simple serpentine belt, $14 at Auto Zone, is up-priced to $54 at Bobs.I understand they now have a new name, and hopefully under new ownership and new customer service people. Just be aware, do your research before you make a decision on repairs, search for prices on parts, and offer to buy your own parts at Auto Zone and take it to them. Then, they should just charge you for the time of actual work.A report about the Yaris, it is now 2020, the car never had any issues. All I ever did was my oil changes and normal maintenance, tires etc. I did put in new struts in the back in 2018. Everything else is still in tip top shape.

My car stopped on the side of the freeway. Took it in to find out the car needed an engine replacement. Put 3k in, only to drive off with my AC no longer working. They told me to bring it in and they’d fix it free (as they should). On the drive over, the check engine light comes on, and they call me to let me know that there was yet another piece that needed replaced. Three hundred and thirty dollars they were going to charge me. Called other mechanics and they said they should be doing that work for free, and the part was overpriced. Negotiated the price to fifty dollar difference, paid to get the car back and walk out to my boyfriend to tell him we’re good to go. Then, realized we didn’t have the keys, so we walked in, asked for them. Dude says he handed to me, and he didn’t. So my boyfriend goes in and magically they had the keys still.Save your money for San Carlos auto services. Better service, communication, and pricing. I won’t be back to this place, even if they discount their oil changes to half.

Ive been to Bob Bowens twice now for major auto repairs and more often for oil changes. I went their early in the morning, maybe 6:30 or so and intended to drop my keys off and have them call me when they opened, but I was surprised that there was actually a staff member there who invited me in even though they werent open yet to get things taken care of. Their staff is so friendly and willing to work around my schedule. They offered me rides, and were were sweet enough to call my dad and go over the repairs with him since I dont know anything about cars and kept in touch with me if there were any changes.Its nice to go to a small trustworthy business and have friendly service instead of going to a huge chain with automated phone answering. I have been a loyal customer of Bob Bowens for almost 6 months. Having been to multiple other repair shops Bob Bowen has been the best. They have a shuttle service that takes you home and picks u up in timely manners. The entire staff is curtious and friendly as soon as you walk in the door. They are all willing to stop by and say hi as you are waiting in the lobby. They do a great job of explaining what is wrong with the car and how much it will cost and how long it will take. Also if you show up with a problem or a quick fix they have you in and out in no time. They took the time to do a whole service check on my car and have even done a price breakdown so i know what I will need in the future. They even emailed a copy and also did follow up phones calls to make sure that I was happy with the work. They do every thing from oil changes to overhauls. Oh did I mention that they have their own financing as well so I can charge it and have a 6 month period to pay it off. I have had almost 800 dollars worth of work done and will be going back over the next few months to have the rest of the work done. The managers and owners also spend time to see how you are doing and how you enjoyed the service and the work that was done at each time.

I was quite happy with my experience this time with this auto shop. I brought my car in for an ignition coil repair. As most shops would do, they usually tell you to repair everything whats wrong with your car. Which is somewhat appropriate so the owner would know. But this time, I like the part that they just entered it in your paperwork and let you know about it, rather than forcing you to have it done. They also asked me to replace all the ignition coils as recommended, but the thing is I wasnt prepared for this. So they helped me out and only repaired the most critical ones. Saved me money at this time and will surely come back for the rest of the repair when finances are more permitting. Thank you for the great service.Edit: 6-21-2018Knocked off STARS. Found family auto service online, since la Mesa facility is the shortest distance where I leave, have my e46 bmw towed by triple A. Able to talk to the nice lady in the front office Betsie and told my car problems to Carlo the service advisor and he explained to me in a very informative way. Call them back the very next day and able to talk to Jim and explained what is going on with my car. To make the story short found faulty dme the reason why my car won’t start at all. Been to a couple of car repair shop close to where I leave, but always give me a turn around, meaning they don’t know exactly what is wrong with my car. Carlo and his crew were very knowledgeable for what they do so I was able to bring my car home the way I expected. Pricing is very fair and honest in fact Carlo was so nice give me good discount. To get straight to the point, there is no value to be had here. In fact, the prices they charge can only be described as predatory.When I brought my truck in, I knew there was a problem with the EGR system after going to AutoZone and using their free diagnostic tool. The mechanic at Family Auto Service told me that the EGR vacuum had failed and that there had been misfires so he recommended changing out the spark plugs as well. There hadnt been any misfires registered on the engine computer when I checked it at AutoZone, but I assumed that maybe they had happened in the few miles I had driven my truck since then. On the phone, he quoted me for $1,100 dollars. This was a steep price since I had assumed the EGR system would only cost about $500 to fix on the high end if nothing had gone too wrong. Im not a mechanic though, so I decided to trust them and go through with the work. Big mistake.When I came to pick up my truck, I found my bill was actually $1,970. Immediately I was shocked about the discrepancy. I asked the clerk, but they just kept repeating that the difference was tax. I relented and paid the bill because I figured they had already done the work and that it must have really been that much.After looking at the recipient I can see I was thoroughly ripped off.- The EGR VACUUM SOLENOID, part number VST007, is a non-OEM part that retails for $70 dollars on Amazon, which they sold to me for $496.99.- The EGR MODULATOR, part number VS111, is also non-OEM that retails about $66 dollars on Amazon, which they sold to me for $285.99.- They sold me 6 spark plugs for $167.94, which they claim are OEM. The most expensive set of 6 OEM spark plugs from Toyota retails for $66 (about $11 per plug).- They charged me $929.00 for labor. I dropped by car off at 9AM and called me to pick it up at 1PM. Assuming they worked on it for all of those 4 hours, that comes out to a labor rate of about $232.25 an hour.I called them back the next day to confront them about their pricing and the fact that my windshield washer reservoir was still leaking (I had asked them to fix it along with everything else), and the person on the phone got very defensive, insisting they had correctly quoted me and that they dont decide the price of the parts, the computer does. They offered me a free synthetic oil change a ($50 dollar value!) and to fix the tank if I brought my car back, but I dont feel comfortable leaving my single most valuable possession in the hands of people I cant trust. I will never be coming back.

They gave me a bill for $1500, being unfamiliar with cars I totally trusted them because I used to come back to them for oil change. I shouldve gotten a second opinion after that but instead decided to fix my car at the spot. Then the next day I googled and found my auto parts they replaced were double cheaper than they listed in my bill. I brought my car in because the check engine light was on and they were very quick about getting my car in and diagnosed. They performed a scan on my car and although I was originally concerned with what I might hear they explained everything thoroughly and made me feel very comfortable with the work that needed to be done. Like any other garage they need to make a profit, but they certainly go they extra mile when other places would just say, sorry, no. I always get rides, have been set up with interest-free finance options, and have had my car squeezed in and left out for me so I could pick it up even after the shop closed.

Needed my brakes examined for screeching & wobble, this place was quick & efficient about it. Had front brakes & rotors replaced without issue.Id been to this shop before back when it was still Bob Bowens, & it seems they maintain their level of service well.Also this place is convenient because its right next to the 70th st. trolley station.I admit I didnt have the time to shop around for comparative pricing quotes or quality of parts or service so I dont know how they stack there. But I only had one day to get the work done & they had it done for me by noon (I got there right when they opened that morning). They keep you updated via text about service progress after initial diagnosis & what they found needs work or replacement, & followed up with me 2 days later to make sure everything was still ok, which I appreciated.

Be very careful, this shop is a total ripoff for parts and labor. We were going on vacation in a couple of days when my engine light came on. I live in the area and have seen the Bob Bowen sign for years and thought it must be a good shop since its been around for 20+ years. First, the labor rates are the highest Ive ever seen at a auto shop and that should have raised a red flag but I accepted it thinking high rates equaled quality mechanics. After examining my truck my adviser, Daniel W, called and said the MAP sensor needed to be replaced at $450. I called the local Ford dealer and a new OEM MAP is $150 and in stock. I called Daniel and asked why the price difference? he said his MAP sensor is tested and certified. After our discussion and me not willing to pay $450 the mechanic found out the MAP unit wasnt the problem. I still was charged $172.50 for the diagnostics and another $80 for testing another sensor and that wasnt the problem either. At this point I wanted to pull my vehicle out of there but I felt trapped. I was going to have to pay the labor costs and still have the Check Engine light. Finally they found a ground wire at fault and for some reason I felt like all the labor they had put in was worth the cost. Our vacation was starting in 2 days and our trip took us through Nevada in June. For lack of time I asked Daniel to check my A/C and make sure everything was OK. He called and said I needed to replace the Evaporator core $155.72 (after vacation I called an A/C shop and they sell it for $45) and then a second call I needed a fan clutch for $143.23 (sells for $54). My total $1,527.48 and this is totally my fault for feeling rushed and trusting this business to be honest. As an end to this story, the A/C quit working after 300 miles and the fan clutch they sold me broke apart in Nebraska taking out the radiator and overheating the engine. I needed a rebuilt engine installed for $5000.

Until recently I have been getting minor auto repairs for about 2 years from Bob Bowens Auto Service. Oil changes and things of that nature.When I needed major repairs for my vehicle I decided to give them a shot. I drive about 60k miles per year on my business vehicle and often need serious maintenance to keep it on the road. This tunes in to about $4000 per year.Rob, the GM there is serious about his business and I am confident I am getting a fair and reputable service. He is willing to back up his word with customer satisfaction. That is what I am looking for in an auto repair service. Someone I can trust. I understand it CAN be rocket science and sometimes the problem doesnt stop with the original repair diagnosis. If you have every worked on cars you know how it can go sometimes. As far as parts, every other Auto repair shop in town has a ~50% markup - so unless you are ready to start wrenching on your own vehicle and invest in the diagnostic electronics and specialized tools, embrace it.I have been to five auto mechanics in the area and Bob Bowens is now my go-to-guy. I trust their expertise and will continue to use them for all 3 of our vehicles.I have even received follow up phone calls on some of the more complicated repair jobs. Shop around and dont go here. I had been going to this shop for a few years, back when it was still Bob Bowen. Theres nothing wrong with their workmanship, but their prices are outrageous and deceptive.PartsLast year I replaced my engine mounts and window regulators. Their quote included the price for the parts. I asked if I could supply my own. They wanted to charge the full retail original manufacturers price for the parts, even though they use aftermarket parts from NAPA or elsewhere. I found new quality parts for about half of what they wanted me to pay. However, if you supply your own parts, even from NAPA, they will not include any warranty or take any responsibility if something goes wrong after you drive off. On top of that, if you supply the parts, they will not honor their discount coupons they constantly send by mail and email. I found this out after I already gave them close to a thousand dollars for the job. They only let you use the coupons if you get the parts through them. The parts they misrepresent as genuine manufacturer parts. So, basically, if you dont pay double for aftermarket parts from them, no discounts, no warranties.LaborLast month I needed a power steering flush. I called them first. They wanted to charge $139.99. I then called another reputable mechanic shop in the area who quoted $99.99. Thats a 40% difference. I used the other mechanic of course.Today, I called for an estimate for scheduled maintenance on my vehicle. I called the other reputable mechanic again and two reputable Honda dealerships in the area. Not only was Familys total service estimate compared to the mechanic around $230 more, about 28% higher, but it was also $150-$200 more than the Honda dealerships! Who charges more than a car dealership?! Unacceptable. And the dealerships would be sure to use genuine Honda fluids and parts.Final ThoughtsThey might have changed their name to Family Auto Service, but dont be fooled. Its an expanding collective of auto shops and they run their business very much like a corporate enterprise. They will charge you too much for labor. They will charge you a fortune for aftermarket parts and let you think youre buying OEM. You will find their discounts and coupons are misleading. You can get better prices and guarantees from an authorized dealership for your vehicle.Im not coming back and I would not recommend them to anyone.

I took my truck in for a brake check, and they gave me a list of parts that needed to be replaced. When my Uncle and I did the brakes, we found that many of the parts they claimed needed to be replaced simply didnt need to. I came back to them thinking there was a misunderstanding. They continued to say the repairs needed were true, despite what I saw. In the future, I would not take my vehicles here for checks since they have different standards, but I would recommend them for oil changes, tire rotations, and other tasks.

I took my ‘03 Frontier with 260,000 miles on it to get the free check of my “Service Engine Soon” light. The code said it had catalytic converter problems. Bad news since the smog check was due by the end of May. Herb had his team dive into it. They found that 3 of the 4 O2 sensors were actually the problem. They replaced those and the catalytic converters came back to life.While they had the truck opened up they repaired a couple pesky leaking seals and did some routine maintenance that will probably let me get another 260,000 miles out of my workhorse... and it passed smog with flying colors.It was a lot of work but well done and at a reasonable price.

Worst ever....went to them on several friends recommendations and they were AAA approved when I began going there. They charged $800 the first round, then called back a few months later and it turned into a bid for a new engine at $7,000. I paine another $1900 for a new cooling system and then a few months later said no it is the thermostat another $300. Now a few months later they are not making good on their warranty trying to tell me that it will be $300 on diagnostics for the engine. Took it to the place that I had the engine rebuilt, I trust them, they said the engine is fine...now stuck with a car that is overhearting daily, and Bob Bowen refusing to make good on a warranty without charging for a bunch of trumped up charges and nonsense not needed work. Dont even get me started on a few of their employees that treat customers like they are idiots or with disrespect and rudely. One of the times there all the front desk person did was complain how she was sick and wanted to be in bed.....not to mention, is she contagious? and the service managers to talk down to people and insult people and other work ..... AAA tow truck drivers are even very suspicious the last few times we asked to tow there becuase they have lost their AAA status. So now I will go to a AAA approved shop and do more research and am extremely upset at all the money they have soaked out of me on my formerly good faith.

Okay first the bad. I had an oil change here. The mechanic did not properly tighten the engine splashguard and it came loose soon thereafter when taking a long distance trip. This interrupted the trip until it could be fully removed. I grumbled a lot. Then I contacted the facility by email and they did not respond. I contacted the BBB and ...voila. Family Auto Svc went out of their way to try to obtain a replacement (which was difficult) and after trying one that did not work, they found a match. I went in here 2 months ago for a new vehicle purchase inspection (I bought a used car from a dealer in La Mesa, but I wanted to get it checked out by a mechanic first.When I brought my car into Bob Bowens Auto Service.. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED WITH MORE DISRESPECT IN MY LIFE regarding an auto shop. Please let me tell you why: I dealt with a guy named Daniel that talked to me like a complete idiot. He kept going on and on about how thorough their 1 hour vehicle inspection was. Well guess what, I saw them pull my car into the garage and they screwed around with it for a good 15 minutes. Then it sat there with no one looking at it for the next 45.Then when the 1 hour is up I ask if my car is ready. Daniel tells me Oh, we are still wrapping up our detailed inspection and I need to type up all of the repairs on this vehicle. 25 minutes later Daniel comes out of the office with the useless repair order he slaved over. The only reason he didnt take longer was because another employee there saw the look on my face. Anyways Daniel comes out and starts talking to me like I am they most retarded individual on the planet, he says a bunch of complete BS repairs: thermostat housing was leaking ($900), shifter was loose ($400), new tires ($900), and some other stuff. The thing that blows my mind is Daniel was actually convinced in his eyes that I was willing to come back there for all of those repairs once I bought the car.I bought the car, it is now 2 months later. I tightened a bolt for the shifter and it is perfect now. There was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the thermostat, thermostat housing, or coolant. The tires could be replaced before summer but theres no rush. All in all DO NOT GO TO BOB BOWENS.. unless you enjoy being treated like a dumbass while they where the fakest smile on their face. I made my first visit to Bob Bowens Auto Service today, and I was most pleased. I came in for a noon appointment for lube and oil service on my 02 Buick LeSabre, and I was greeted and signed up by Sharyl. She got the work order out and offered me donuts and coffee. I accepted the coffee and sat down with my laptop to do some work while I waited. Noticing the hour (lunchtime) Katy offered me some pizza. Donuts I could refuse, but not pizza. She brought me a sizeable piece and I gave up working while I waited and dived into the hot pizza. When I finished eating Lavelle asked me to come out into the shop with him and look at my car. He pointed out that the valve cover was leaking some oil. I told him I was aware of it, and that it only leaks about a quart between oil changes. He pointed out that the oil coating on one of the spark plugs could be cutting the spark energy and might cause misfiring. I said that I was seeing no drop in power of a reduction in average gas mileage. Yes it needs to be fixed, but at 176,000 miles, it is no longer urgent. Ill think about it. He gave me a cost estimate on repairing the oil leak, I want back to my computer. The work was done in no time and my car was ready. The billing was handled smoothly with no questions arising on my part. I will come back. Maybe Ill get that oil leak fixed.

This is the first time ever reviewing any establishment. However after reading several reviews, trying to decide if I would take my car to be serviced at bob bowans. I have decided not no but hell no !!!! Most the time I can get really screwed cause of my forgiving heart. Like 2 years ago I took my 2000 Nissan Frontier in because it had overheated. I drove it in it was just a lil louder and running warmer than usual. I was told they were the best. AAA credited most fair and knowledgeable in there field. I let them inspect my truck Later on that night near closing I called to ask what was going on with my truck. I was told the mechanic that was working on my vehicle had not got to my car that day and would give me a call tomorrow. Next day I was finally informed of a cracked head gasket and that I was very lucky I didnt hurt the block engine etc. I told him ya I thought it wise to pull over as soon as I saw my temp gauge shooting up. So he chuckled and said well thats the good news. The bad is its going to cost you $ 1800 to fix. Well long story short I guess that wasnt the case he had a much higher amount a week later when my car was done $2500. And afterward my exhaust still smoked like a chimney engine louder than it had ever been ran far worse then it had before it overheated and as weird as it sounds to explain. But I could sware i felt a difference in my clutch and not quite exactly right when changing gears anyway I took it back they apologized for my disappointment and dissatisfaction with their establishment totally turning and deflecting a true customer complaint into my fault by using week arguments such as they would never be accountable for such a thing being AAA crediteded voted best wherever and have raving views from such n such and been there since the 50s with jaw dropped I asked so there is nothing you can do They said it perhaps best to sell the car if I was worried about it breaking down then a week later I received a whole $ 10 off coupon in the mail off my next oil change for being such a great customer LOL I thought to myself. So glad I read SO MANY similar stories. Anyone who is giving this place a good review must either be paid to do so Knows nothing or has nothing wrong with their car Or somehow related to these people I just dont see how so many similar stories can be a coincidence you know what is even more remarkable and shall I say UNBELIEVABLE with upmost emphasis on unbelievable is that the votes seem to be scaled from one extreme to the other. Came to get a diagnostic with woman named Jen. They went right to work to check it. Jen came out to quote about $2,000 to change my clutch, fluids, and flywheel. She recommends me to apply for credit with synchrony bank, and I did. Somewhere along my agreement to apply with the bank, she misunderstood that as take my car apart and fix the clutch. I didnt have an approval yet from the bank to start taking it apart. Aside from her misunderstanding that, Jen didnt give me any papers allowing their mechanics to start taking my car apart....She was charging me 150, but downed it to 137. I spoke to a manager and he brought it to 50. after finding out there needs to be documentation before taking apart my car...I felt taken advantage of and I didnt have the belief she was truly trying to help me out. It felt that replacing and buying new parts was my only option. No gave me a reason as to what was happening nor a why. Mind that I got another quote from a different mechanic who quoted a lower price. Then turned out i did not need to have my clutch replaced at all, but to keep up with the brake fluids. They were low.

I like the fact that they can get done what you need done. If you walk in with some new parts and ask them to put them on they will do it. They also get the work done promptly. I will say the labor is a bit high but then again it goes back to the old adage, you get what you pay for. Overall i am happy with my service here. Thanks

Brought my car here for a second opinion when another shop said my car couldnt be aligned after a run in with a curb. The other shop said parts needed to be replaced, $1800 estimate. Family Auto aligned it and said no damage was present, so Im super grateful theyre honest and saved me so much money.

I didnt get my best experience in the end. Changed my review! I think its time to reject some customers so that those that are already being serviced get a thorough service! I did see a customer walk away today because expectations were not met. I doubt Ill come back.

For awhile now I have been trying to find a new home for my Auto work and F.A.S. has came to the rescue. Gerry and Berzy are the best and they have a way with customers! I recommend you going to F.A.S. for all your car needs! Fair and honest prices and Auto work is amazing. They also have a free shuttle home! My car drives as smooth as butter now! Puurrrrrfect

Dropped my 2007 buick to have some electrical work done on the front lights. I understand that alot of cars have to have the front bumper removed to replace bulbs. But I feel 345 for labor and only 73 dollars for parts is a little excessive. They do apply a discount for military. I will try another place next time...the price is to excessive and labor cost are dramatic and over embellished.

On June 11, 2014 my Geo Prizm broke down. I tried starting it while on side of road, thinking it could be timing belt (interference motor) I had it towed to Bob Bowen Auto Service (BBAS). I called the next day and spoke to Gary. He said vehicle was fixed, it was the starter & the battery. I told him there was no way that was the problem because they were both functioning properly after the car stalled. Gary said he would check. He called me to pickup the car on June 12, the next day it stalled again with the same symptoms. (The vehicle started and drove 50 feet three times, but would not continue running.) BBAS then replaced the distributor. The car continued to hesitate. When looking the motor over I noticed my hood seal was halfway torn off and dangling, the radiator reservoir was melted to my exhaust manifold,spark plug wires were unseated, and air box hose was torn.I called Gary complaining of the damage and he said if its any consulation the mechanic no longer worked at Bob Bowen. WTH? How does that benefit me???? BBAS replaced the reservoir, wires, plugs and Gary promised to locate a used air box hose. Six weeks later I called Gary & asked him what was taking so long??? He said he couldnt locate one but would install it if I could find one (found one within 2 hours on Ebay). Sent letter to BBAS asking for refund of $900.00 of $1,125.00 spent. They offered to fix air box hose only. My husband talked to owner, Rob and arranged for me to call him the next day @ 2:00pm. I called - no answer, what a surprise...I left a message & never recd a return call from owner. I filed a complaint with Bureau of Automotive Repair who investigated and recommended BBAS pay approx. $650.00 to me for the repairs done by the other shop. BBAS offered $200.00.Bob Bowen Auto told the investigator that the starter was stuck, that they took a hammer to the side of it (funny Gary never mentioned this to me & it wasnt noted on my receipt. This company and its employee Gary is dishonest and has no integrity!Their mechanics do sub-par work! DO NOT patronize this repair shop! We work too hard for our money to throw it away needlessly. I have patronized BBAS since 2005 & since the business sold I have, as well as my new mechanic have noticed other sub-par work BBAS has done on my car. (had ignition switch replaced...column housing broken glued together, 2009 timing belt replaced (replaced again in 2015 by another auto shop- this shop found the thermostat was improperly placed, #1 cylinder seat not installed correctly (oil leaking #1 cylinder) & motor mount bolt head broken and covered with a dollup of grease. Again, I cannot reiterate enough, STEER CLEAR OF BOB BOWEN AUTO REPAIR! My car has since logged over 7,000 worry free miles since changing repair shops!

They are helpful and straight up with the cost. I just bought my car and had a small problem (or id like to think i had one), but apparently it was a false alarm and the car was behaving how it is supposed to behave. They told me that and didnt charge anything.
