Wonderful experience! The instructors were exactly what we needed for my son to get the most out of his first time surfing.I purchased a 3 pack of 90 min lessons. My son is 11 and we did 3 days in a row. His arms were really sore and tired for day 3; next time I would plan to give him a rest day after 2 lessons. It’s good to have some flexibility in your days because the instructors know the ocean and might want to change times for a better experience.

Booked a lesson for me and my 7 year old daughter. Booking was easy and they were responsive over email. The lesson itself was great - Julian was our instructor and gave us instruction and safety tips before jumping in the water.He was great with my daughter and she had a total blast. He offered a lot of pointers to me and made sure we had fun. I would absolutely book both him and Encinitas Surf Lessons again. Highly recommend.

Ive been reading other reviews and I truly wish our experience was similar to everyone elses. Unfortunately that was not the case. In regards to logistics with booking and communication everything was great. The lesson however was not. Our instructor informed us early on of his experience not only within the surf school but also with local school districts. Weve never experienced a lesson where the instructor was so lackadaisical. At no point during the lesson did the instructor provide any visual nor kinesthetic guidance to heighten the lesson. Rather we were constantly told, Youll know when you feel it. We had surf lessons before but it was as if the instructor wasnt even there. Customer service informed us that the owner would follow up but we are still waiting to hear back from them. Maybe it was just an off day but we were extremely disappointed with the lack of instruction and follow-up that occurred. The following day we were hesitant to do another lesson but decided to do so with another surf company. That lesson was a complete 180 from what we had previously experienced.

Mike was the surf instructor today for my almost 9 year old son and myself (40 y/o). My son is 410 & about 87 lbs, and Im 62 barefoot and 220 - 225 lbs, and we were both beginners having never surfed before. Mike has such a kind, pleasant, and encouraging personality. I truly couldnt have asked for a better surf instructor. He helped my son to be able to stand and ride a wave at very least seven different times, which meant everything to me. Mikes instructions prior to surfing were perfect, and I wish I would have just followed them more exactly. I was able to stand up and ride the wave for a very short while 5+ times. My son was able to ride a wave standing up all the way into the beach, which was about 50 feet riding the wave standing. It was absolutely AMAZING! Unfortunately we didnt get video of that one, but there will be other times in the future.Make sure to ask for Mike, because he has a wonderful personality, and he works so well especially with kids but also with adults. You can tell Mike is really fit, and he physically does so much to set you up perfectly for the right waves at the right times.

Excellent experience with Encinitas Surf Lessons! Jason was great to work with and our instructor Daniel was terrific with our two 14 year old kids. Got them up on the board in no time and turned them into passionate surfers. Cant wait to go back!

Jason did a great job communicating and letting us know the details about our lesson. Sean was awesome! He did a great job teaching my wife, and 2 kids( 12 and 8) the ins and outs of surfing and safety. He was very patient, helpful and kept everyone smiling and safe.

Charlie was an amazing teacher!! I am 61 and my husband is 59, we have never surfed and certainly never origamied ourselves into wetsuits! Charlie was kind, patient, encouraging and best of all successful! My husband was a natural and popped up his first time! I will do a bit more on a hip issue and then we will call Charlie ---I cant wait to try again!!!

My 7 year old daughter had been wanting surf lessons for over a year, and we finally booked her a lesson while on vacation. She (we) had the most positive experience! John has a natural talent for working with kids! My daughter felt safe and comfortable with John, and most importantly, she had so much fun! He was so upbeat and encouraging with her and help build her self confidence. Once we get back to Florida, surfing is something she wants to pursue further. Also, buy the GoPro footage! You will NOT be disappointed! The footage is amazing and wont come close to any pictures or videos you will get from the beach. It is far worth the extra money!

He followed up, answered questions and was great with trying to figure out what would be best for me. Awesome morning surf lesson with Daniel at Encinitas Surf Lessons! He was a great instructor with a great vibe, and we really enjoyed our 3 on 1 lesson with him. My kids are ages 10 and 12, our friends’ kids ages 9 and 12. We called Encinitas Surf Lessons late last night on a recommendation from our hotel, Surfhouse, and the owner Jason answered right away and got us set up for a noon lesson today with Daniel. I cannot say enough good things about the entire experience!! Daniel was such a fun, knowledgeable great instructor. My kids absolutely loved him. They said he was “the coolest and most fun” instructor of any lesson they’ve ever taken. He is fun, professional and very safe. He was able to teach four kids at once and individualize it for each one. We will definitely be looking him up when we come back, thank you Daniel!!!

We had our first surf lesson for our girls with Jordan. He was so patient, kind and fun with them and they stood up! I loved the experience so much that we booked a 2nd lesson where our kids had improved even more. Making the reservation was super easy and organized and Jordan showed up early to get us in the wetsuits and suited up. Can’t wait to book another lesson! Such a fun part of our trip!!

Our surf instructor Walt was Great! Very patient and encouraging for beginners. Explained all the steps to catch a wave clearly and in a way that it made sense. I actually am still doing some of the practices and exercises a week later at home. Was able to catch the whitewash and even some regular waves pretty easily (which normally isnt the case for myself). Couldnt recommend Encinitas Surf Lessons Enough! A++++ Service

I booked a 2 hour lesson for my 10 year old daughter and 6 year old son. Daniel was their instructor and he was really great with the kids. My 6 year old was excited and went for it but as soon as he went under the first time he was done. We kind of expected that. Daniel spent the next hour getting my daughter to surf and staying afloat. He then cared enough to reapproach my son towards the end to get him to go out a few more rounds and he was successful. My daughter spent the next day boogie boarding and told me that she would not know how to catch a wave if she did not have the surf lesson. It also made her a lot more comfortable in going further out into the ocean on her own.

I’m from ND so I’m a land animal but since moving to SD I’ve wanted to try surfing. I booked with Kyleigh and she was knowledgeable, friendly and encouraging. Though I wouldn’t say I was a natural I’m definitely going to book with them again. Had so much fun & can’t wait to get better with more lessons.

Our instructors, daniel and owen, are some of the most down to earth guys! They took the time to really teach us the basics and tips to get up on the first go. After about 30 minutes they had us way out there catching some bigger waves on our own (with a helpful push).They also got some amazing footage of us on gopros! Even after we forgot our gopro memory card, daniel went out of his way to meet us and deliver it. We will definitely recommend your business to friends!

We had an amazing time learning to surf! Highly recommend Encinitas Surf Lessons. Our instructor, Walt, made it so fun and was super encouraging (we were total beginners). He met us right at the beach with surfboards and wetsuits, we spent a few minutes learning on the sand, and then we were in the water for the remainder of the lesson! It was great! They fit us in pretty last minute and the sign up process was easy. Definitely take their recommendations in terms of the best time to take the lesson, you’re going to want pretty mellow waves if you’re a beginner! We will be back!

We were referred to Encinitas Surf Lessons on a Family Vacation as my daughter that was 9 years old was interested in taking her first lesson. It was super easy to set up the lesson (private), and the instructor was easy to coordinate with on the front end.Already an amazing experience. Now, during the lesson is when it got even better. They were super kind to her, very supportive, and worked with her to not only have a great time, but really learn how to surf! After the first lesson, my daughter said that it was The best time ever in her life. As such, we had to set up another lesson, and it was just as great of an experience as the first one!We loved the city and we will definitely be back. We are definitely going to be using Encinitas Surf Lessons again and look forward to it!

While fairly last minute, Encinitas Surf Lessons was able to establish a lesson for my son, Patrick (13), the day of my request, last Friday! Jason, the owner, was super helpful and flexible with our schedule. It seemed that within minutes our son was up and surfing by working with his incredible instructor, Owen. My son was super pumped and certainly came away with a new love! In fact, he loved it so much that we booked a 2nd lesson the day we departed on that Sunday, this time with Daniel, and he too, was great!! Both instructors were very professional, courteous, on-time and empowered my son to improve with each and every opportunity! Excellent time with Daniel for myself and my daughter. Daughter’s first time in the ocean and she is popping up catching green face waves on day 2. Of course not everyone will do that but Daniel was excellent with his instruction and sensed that my daughter had a shot at green faces. Great service and follow up from company, and particularly excellent coaching and time spent with Daniel: very friendly, personable, patient, knowledgable, and he caters the instruction to the individual. There are fundamentals everyone should know, but Daniel went beyond and instructed as appropriate for myself and my daughter. Will definitely book again when I’m back in SD.

Jason is very organized and he arranged four days of lessons for my four year old son and me to surf with John. We had a great time and John was able to teach my son the fundamentals of surfing. We had such a great experience learning to surf for the first time! Our instructor Ryan was very friendly, helpful, and patient. Couldnt recommend Encinitas Surf Lessons more! I was visiting the area so called them in the morning and was surfing by mid-afternoon. They were able to quickly set up a 2-hour private lesson for me with Aaron, and within a few minutes he contacted me about where to meet and what to bring. Aaron was an excellent instructor--he was friendly and encouraging and had me off the beach and surfing in under an hour. Fantastic experience and wouldnt hesitate to recommend it to anyone interested in trying surfing.

Such a great experience! Thank you to the team for making it all come together. I had my first lesson with Dylan and ultimately it turned out to be a lot of fun and really inspiring. He made it very easy to feel comfortable in the waves, ask questions and feel confident.Communication with my instructor was very clear and I learned the basic first steps in terms of how to get out to the waves safely, hop on, pop up and gradually sit/stand, all while doing my best at focusing on where I want to go. These are tools that I can practice on my own whenever the opportunity allows. I can only imagine how deep one can go into the world of surf, but I have definitely got a taste for it now. Cant wait!

This was my first time surfing and I had an amazing experience. Jason and Owen were fantastic instructors. I even got up on the board, which I was not at all expecting! They gave very clear instructions, provided the wetsuit and the board, and were very encouraging. They chose a great spot for us to go out, and while it was winter and as such the conditions were a little bumpy, they made sure I got the most out of the few days I had in San Diego. Would recommend them to anyone looking to learn and have a great time at the beach!

My daughter and I took our first surf lessons yesterday with Jason, and had an incredible time. Jason and the team at Encinitas Surf Lessons made the introduction to surfing for me and my 10-year-old daughter a positive one from start to finish. Both of us were complete beginners, and while Ive still got some work to do (at no fault of theirs) my daughter is already catching her own waves and looking to start using a performance board. Jasons focus on the fundamentals, safety and comfort in the ocean, and most importantly having fun, have the two of us hooked on spending time out on the water every week. I highly recommend!

We’re getting a second 3-pack!Update: After 5 lessons, I can appreciate how the instructor increases the degree of difficulty while always keeping it fun. It was awesome! Daniel did a great job teaching my new wife and I the proper moves on the beach before we hit the water. It was a really choppy day, but he did a great job guiding us in the water until we got used to it. It was a blast. Came with board, wetsuit and even photos. We did the 2-hour intro lesson. Would recommend to anyone who has not surfed and wants to give it a try and to anyone who is re-introducing themselves to it.

My son Erik, 9, had a great time taking lessons with Jasons team for two days. The first lesson was with Jen and she was very sweet, experienced and patient with our little guy, who is easily distracted. The water and temperature outside was cold so he opted out of his lesson early. His second lesson was with Chasen who was also very experience, patient and worked well with kids. Overall it was a great experience that we look forward to having again in the near future!

Absolutely loved my time with these guys! My instructor, Aaron, knew how to help a beginner like myself have a great experience. I got up multiple times! The surf that day was kind of difficult, according to Aaron, not that I would have known the difference. Regardless, Aaron was exceptional at helping us learn everything we needed to know, both on the beach and in the water, to enjoy ourselves and stay safe. It was a blast! I wish my trip was longer. I had always wanted to try to learn to surf, and hitting 40 this year, I thought I need to start checking off some more life events. I booked a 2 hour private lesson a few weeks in advance. The day before the instructor, Mike, texted to say he was reviewing the current conditions at a few of the nearby beaches and would find the best location for the lesson. He then sent parking info. Morning of he sent over a pin location so I would know exactly where to meet him, we meet at Cardiff beach. Mike had a great attitude and was happy and pleasant to learn from, very encouraging. We spent about 20 mins going over the basics about how to get on the board and position yourself and then got right into the water. I wasnt expecting much from just the first lesson, but I think I attempted about 30 waves, stood up on about 15 and rode a few for a good 5 seconds. It was a great feeling just to get in and try it out. Overall experience was great, will definitely book future lessons with them, and hopefully be able to get kids interested in coming years.

We just returned from our first family trip to San Diego area and one of the must-dos was to go surfing...but as East coast beginners (with wife and two boys; 10 and 12 yo), we needed some help. It was important to me that we had a safe, fun first experience and I read the reviews of several surf lesson shops, but kept coming back to Jason and Encinitas Surf Lessons. Lots of good reviews and he was responsive to people. He wanted them to have a memorable experience and we certainly did.Getting connected for Q&A was easy and Jason was great to speak with...answered everything, simple to work with and prepared us well for our visit...and on relatively short notice. He set us up with two of his instructors Aaron and Chad - who were seasoned surfers and overall great guys. We texted, met at a specific location in Encinitas (quick trip north from SD), they had the wetsuits/boards all ready since Jason noted height, etc of each of us. We spent an adequate amount of time going over safety, board positioning, tips, etc and wasted no time getting into the water. I think my 10 yo. go up on a wave in his 2nd try...he thinks hes ready to move to CA...I cant say enough about everyone involved in this experience. Class group of instructors and Jason was great to work with. If we had more time in our trip, we definitely would have signed up for more lessons. Next time we visit the area, well definitely grab more time. Highly recommend!

After reading all the stellar reviews about Jason & Encinitas Surf Lessons on Yelp, I called Jason on Dec 31 to see if he was available. Unfortunately he was booked the rest of the day, and also not available on the next day, New Years, and since we were leaving the area on Jan 2, it looked like we might not get a chance. However he let me know that he would find someone who was willing to work on the holiday to give my girlfriend and I a lesson. He hooked us up with Chase. Chase covered safety issues and basics of popping up on the board on the beach before heading out to the waves. We started out with real face waves, rather than just whitewater secondary waves. While this may not be the best approach for everyone, my girlfriend and I are adventurous and love challenges, and she was able to ride one of the waves. I got close and felt that, with a little more practice, I could have too. We then switched to trying the smaller whitewater waves which were a lot of fun too. Chase was extremely knowledgeable about wave action and picked and chose the best waves for us to try to ride. He adjusted his approach to each person to meet them at their own skill level (or lack thereof :)) He himself has ridden 22ft waves so the guy clearly knows what he is doing. Encinitas is a fantastic place to learn surfing, and if Im ever back, Ill definitely look up Chase or Jason for another lesson.

We are a family of aspiring surfers from the East coast and took six lessons with Jason during the last week of April during our vacation to Encinitas. We were looking for a personal style type of instructions to improve our skills and were not disappointed.Jason was a very competent instructor and made sure we got our basics right on the ground followed by close guidance while in the water. We had a lot of fun in the water and caught a lot of waves with his support, some of which were quite amazing. Seeing my wife riding a 3 foot wave like a local Californian after just two lessons was breathtaking. I also caught quite a few waves, which were not possible for me before.We came back to New York and started surfing season this weekend. As a testimony to our time spent with Jason we can say that our surfing had definitely improved. Would definitely come back again and recommend to others!

Tuesday morning I decided I wanted to take some surf lessons after watching countless locals shred waves in front of me for days and by 4pm that day I was out on the water catching waves with Owen. I received immediate and attentive responses from Jason when I inquired about the multiple lesson packages and I setup a 3 lesson package for myself and a single lesson for my wife and 3 year old son.. (Yes.. 3 years old) The transactions went seamlessly which I consider a feat as we are from a different country. Jason helped us through everything flawlessly and was accommodating throughout even with us being at the zoo during most of it. After a quick conversation with Owen we met up and had a great first lesson with myself getting up a number of times and sharing some expert local knowledge mixed with many friendly chats. The second day when we showed up for our family lesson is when my respect for Owen and this company went over the top. We have a very active and determined 3 year old and even though he is very young Owen had no issue taking the time to teach him how to surf and to eventually make an amazing experience for my son and our entire family. Owen got our little guy up and riding onto numerous waves within minutes and over the entire 2 hour lesson. You could not wipe the smile off our little guys face for days or Owens face for that matter. To say this whole event turned heads on the beach would be an understatement. Numerous people stopped to pump the little guy up and ask us who we got the lessons through. One couple even came down to the beach from the bluffs to find out who to call for lessons as they could not believe what they were witnessing. Day three was more of the same for me and I left the beach with a new buddy to call on the west coast after another great session. Needless to say, I now have to buy the little guy a board, return tickets to SoCal and more lessons from these guys when we get back. Definitely a memory our family and I will take forward forever and I appreciate these guys for making it happen. 100% recommend! Great Times!

My private surf lessons with Jason were phenomenal. Last June I took surf lessons on the east coast and only stood up one time in a two hour session. I ran this past Jason and he told me Id be up on the board in no time. Cha-ching, he was right on the money, I rode the first wave he sent me on. From the minute we shook hands I had a good feeling about my sessions. Jason thoroughly explained the different techniques for standing up on the board and made sure that I confidently decided which one to use before we got in the ocean. He also knew how to motivate me when I had some brief issues with paddling through white water to beyond the break. Overall he is a great dude and if you hire his services Im 99.99% sure youll be up on the board in your first lesson. Next time Im in Encinitas Ill be looking forward to becoming a better surfer with Jason.

I had tried surfing a few times before but without much success, until I took a few surfing lessons with Jason. Not only was I able to get up on the waves, improve my technique and gain the confidence to go out on my own, but I was also blessed with visits from a pod of dolphins in two of my lessons, which made the experience that much more wonderful. I contacted Jason on behalf of prAna to set up a group surf event with 7 people and one of our Surf ambassadors. Jason was super flexible with our group, even moving from his normal lesson location to somewhere more convenient for the 7 of us. We shot down to Beacons early in the morning and Jason gave us a good on-the-beach lesson before we hit the water. The waves were pretty choppy, but I have to hand it to the guys--they handled it great and EVERYONE caught a wave that day. It was AWESOME! Most of us it was our first time catching waves. My 12-year old daughter and I were in town visiting family and my daughter had a passion to try surfing.Though we couldnt take repeated lessons due to our short time in town, Jason did a great job of helping both my daughter and me feel comfortable on surf boards and with the waves. I highly recommend Jason as a surfing instructor in the North County San Diego area. Whether youve been surfing for years, or havent touched a surf board ever, he can teach you how to surf. Believe me, if I can stand up on the board in the first lesson, so can you. He is very patient, easy going, and truly enjoys teaching others his passion. I would recommend working hard to find consistent swell and then go one on one if possible if you want to learn the fastest. As we drove up PCH, we saw the inviting beach area and did a quick search on the internet to find someone available for surf lessons, We found Jason and asked if he could be to the beach within the hour. I had a fantastic experience taking three private lessons with Jason. At each lesson, we did safety reminders, stretching and basic instruction at the beach, and then paddled right out to the waves. Jason helped me to catch waves by timing my paddling and pushing when needed. It was great to get into the feeling of a wave coming up from behind, sliding down the face and popping up before the wave breaks. Jason’s cheerful “paddle, paddle, paddle … arch up!” really gave me good timing to pop up at the right moment and, for sure, will stay with me when I go out by myself in future. After each round, Jason had a nice way of going over quickly of what went right and what went wrong on the previous wave; right out there, while sitting on the board and resting before the next wave. Of course, there is plenty that can go wrong when you are a beginner, but Jason’s remarks were always spot-on, respectful and mixed with encouragement. I really appreciated the way he would get me involved in this kind of troubleshooting while asking “what happened on that wave?” At the end of the lessons, I had managed to get up on almost every wave, surfed a few all the way to the beach and even got a feeling on how to turn on the wave face. Overall, I had an excellent time during my surf lessons with Jason and I can highly recommend him.

By far Jason is my best coach ever, Ive leaned so much from him in my six lessons and looking forward to taking more with him.... Ive taken lessons from a couple others around and I have learned so much from him in and out of the water. He explains everything from beach breaks to reef breaks, and wind swells to ground swells.
