I picked Empowerhouse Acting Studio after watching testimonials from alumni about the Owner/Acting Teacher, Melissa Thompson Esaia. The common thread I heard in all these testimonials was that Melissa was a passionate and committed teacher who understood how to balance teaching, compassion, and accountability. Having worked with her for almost 2.5 years now I can say she does this better than any teacher/leader I have ever worked with. In doing so, she has created a safe learning environment at Empowerhouse AND an expectation for excellence. It is not an easy task to do both!Not only has finishing my Meisner Technique and business training empowered me to call myself an actor, but I feel like I am a better person who has more confidence in who I am. Additionally, the Empowerhouse community has become like a family. I have been supported and helped by Empowerhouse alumni both in the Bay area and in LA. The group I finished the training with (see the photo) are truly family to me.Becoming a member of the Empowerhouse community and being taught by Melissa has been a life-changing experience!!! Melissa is an incredibly and naturally gifted teacher. I took the Meisner Technique training with her for two years, followed by the Auditioning & Business of Acting course. From the initial interview, I knew my life was about to change with the guidance of this person. She was welcoming, kind, assertive, and set clear expectations from the first class in terms of how actors should present themselves. She always came from a place of care when providing feedback, both constructive and praising.Melissa taught me how to tap into my emotions and use them as a superpower, rather than suppressing them as I had done before her class. She teaches how to act and embody a character, but only after she feels youve successfully embodied your own. My class journey with her may be over (for now), but I have left the nest feeling prepared, ready, and excited for the countless opportunities that lie ahead for me as an actor.Melissa and her classes will change your life, and will challenge you to embrace who you are while shedding your own skin. As a former graduate of 2023 at Empowerhouse Acting Studio, I can say that I have never had an experience even remotely close to the one i had working with Melissa. I was greeted with love when I first began the two year Meisner Technique training. And I graduated with a new family. I’ve learned an abundance of skills as well as honing my craft and artistic abilities. I also learned a lot about myself as well as becoming comfortable in my own skin and confident in following my dreams. Empowerhouse Acting Studio was and still is my safe haven. Words alone can’t express the profound impact this school has had on my life. Melissa is more than a teacher, she is a source of inspiration, knowledge and unwavering support. This school is where I found not only an environment of learning but also a sactuary where my dreams were nurtured and my potential was unlocked. I just completed my two year Meisner training program at Empowerhouse this week and can’t believe how far I’ve come, all thanks to Melissa. She didn’t just teach me to be a better actor and the true craft of acting, but also to step into myself, trust myself, and to feel confident in my own skin in all aspects of my life.It all went by so quickly and was such a life changing experience! My time with Melissa has been a journey in which I couldnt have explored with out her. The craft was very important but that wasnt the only main thing. What Empowerhouse does is bring out the truth and life of the work itself. And after extensive training, then and only then, do we layer in character work and scene study and making the good and truthful choices to our work. After 2 years of training, you feel strong and confident to step into your craft.Also, Melissa is also no slouch. If youre not putting in the effort, shell catch that immediately and hold you accountable, and even will be stern at times, but its all out of love. In this chaotic industry of scammers and con artists, Melissa is among the few that genuinely cares about her students and does everything she can to help with your dream. If you still have any doubt, all I can say is youre in good hands with Melissa and Im glad I found her. I dont know where Id be if I didnt find Empowerhouse.

I took my first acting class with Melissa learning the Meisner Technique and I had no idea what to expect. Me being a very reserved person, Melissa was very patient with me throughout the entire training and answered any questions that I had. Overtime I was able to gain confidence. Taking this class is the biggest thing I’ve ever done and the most challenging but it was all worth it. I am so grateful to have had Melissa as my first acting teacher. For the past two years, I have dedicated my time, and a majority of my life, to studying and learning the Meisner Technique, which included the Auditioning & Business of Acting class.Prior to my training, I did not believe that the industry and the profession of acting was in my future. It was a dream that I pursued in my early years but had limited success. I worked on my look and my presentation, which was fine but I was lacking the foundation needed to express my talent.Over and over, I would freeze in auditions, even the ones where I wrote and memorized the monologue! It was very discouraging and I accepted that this profession was probably not for me, so I went to school, worked and lived my life.Until I learned about the Meisner Technique. The name Empowerhouse says it all. Melissa is a powerhouse educator and the Meisner training will empower you in ways that you can’t even imagine.Over two years ago I was looking for acting training to face my fear of failure/rejection, which was the cause of my imposter syndrome at work (software engineering). Now, after the complete 6 sessions training, I am a completely different person. I have built confidence in myself, found my voice, and experienced the freedom of allowing myself to be seen/heard. All of this has empowered me to continue building on my Meinser foundation and pursue a new career in acting.Melissa starts small and simple and gradually brings everyone out of their comfort zone. I’ve studied the Meisner technique, audition on camera and business from Melissa for close to three years from private group setting to one on one coaching :)! Her keen eyes for details and ability to help uncover strong choices is extraordinary. Training with Melissa taught me alot about myself, by giving me insight about my personal blocks. Be it emotionally, physically, and anything in between her teachings taught me some of my greatest lessons to date. Melissa is kind, thoughtful, and real. Melissa is an attentive, precise, nurturing, strong, and supportive teacher. When she is teaching you, you will receive her full undivided attention. She cares. She truly cares. She is extremely present.She is an Actor, but acting and teaching are two different things. She knows how to teach; how to be firm and supportive.As a student I felt like I could trust Melissa. This is key, especially for acting, if you dont feel like you can trust your teacher -i.e., like they are honest, know what theyre talking about, care, are present- then you wont feel free to fully develop and take risks. Learning acting is tough, you need a balance between, being pushed and challenged-getting broken down, and, being fostered warmly-being built up. I dont think it can ever be perfectly achieved, but Melissa really really understands this and does a very good job at doing both. ALL of Melissas students say, I really like working with Melissa, she makes it safe to take risks and not be safe.None of this can come through from a review on-line, you will need to speak with her in-person to feel what Im talking about. I would like to share my experience in learning the Meisner technique taught by Melissa Thompson Esaia.Melissa teaches the Meisner technique the way that Sanford Meisner taught it, and does not deviate from his way of teaching. What makes her stand out from other instructors is that she has an innate ability to teach each individual student in a way that speaks to them and she always knows just what to say to get you to be present and in the moment. The acting teacher you always knew you needed! With full confidence I can say that Melissa is and always will be an integral part of my growth as an actor. She is my mentor, my friend, my sister, my confidant, and the person I turn to when I need help. I remember waiting anxiously in her classroom on my first day of school. I had never taken an acting class before, though I had been tempted many, many times. I was too nervous to dive in, so I wanted to get my feet wet first. I took a summer acting class with Melissa, an abridged part one of a Meisner technique acting series. As I sat quietly in my seat (thinking about getting up and running away), in walked one of the most ethereal, brightest spirits I had ever seen. Melissa, wearing a floral patterned shirt to match her natural and abundant energy, burst through the doors and began teaching acting. She has been my teacher ever since. I have been fortunate to take both of Melissas Intro to Meisner Technique and Auditioning and the Business of Acting classes.There are teachers who can teach the craft of acting, and teachers who help you grow into a more expressive, full, and connected human being! Melissa does both. A huge part of acting is about building confidence, discovering that youre already enough and have all the tools! I initially studied under Melissa during my first year at the Meisner Technique Studio. When COVID hit, she was transitioning from a 13-year run teaching along side Jim Jarrett at the Meisner Technique Studio to launching Empowerhouse Acting Studio. With the studio in SF shut down, without missing a beat, Melissa pivoted right into creating opportunities for our community to stay connected, creative and to continue growing as artists. She was our lighthouse during a very dark time. Soon thereafter, Empowerhouse Acting Studio began offering classes online. The growth my studio classmates and I experienced in her classes was remarkable. Melissa so seamlessly adapted in-person material for a zoom platform while maintaining rigor, integrity, personal connection and quality. When the SF studio reopened, a small group of us, unable/unwilling to return to in-person classes, chose to have Melissa take us thru the second year of our formal Meisner training. It was one of the best decisions Ive ever made. We got the same teachings without any of the worry or anxiety of being live in a studio with a large group during a pandemic. I very fortunate to have had Melissa as a teacher for 2 years and I could not recommend her enough. Wherever you are in your acting career whether that is just starting out or having been working for years, it is important to find an acting program that can take you to the next level of your craft. Wow! I have known Melissa for 4 years. She was my teacher in the Meisner Technique starting in 1/16. I have learned so much as an actor working with Melissa. First of all, she is very insightful. Her radar for honest authentic work is outstanding. I had training as an actor in my early 20s and then took a different tack in my life career coming back to acting in my 60s. I was able to take all that I learned in my 20s and infuse it with an authenticity I was not able to come near to at that time. Now the training I received early on supports the training I learned with Melissa. You will receive the absolute AUTHENTIC Meisner training as if you were working with Sandy himself. Melissa was trained by the last trainee of Mr. Meisner himself who followed his teachings precisely. So she has learned in the same way one branch removed. My craft and ability has grown exponentially from what I was capable of in 2016 to now. The craft I have now is what I always thought acting should be: real, authentic, moving, pure. I was never able to acheive that with the Stanislavski Method. The objectives were the same but the training didnt show how to get there. Thats what the Meisner Technique does. It is based on Stanislavski but it takes it further and shows you, trains you how to get to AUTHENTICITY through the different exercises Sandy employed. At some point it becomes second nature so you dont even have to think about it. You know it. Its in you. And when its not there you know what tools to use to find the authenticity of the imaginary circumstances of the play/character.Melissa will teach you these techniques as she has taught me. If you are serious about learning what it takes to be an actor of the highest caliber then my advise is to sign up. You will need to work very hard. It will be demanding. But wow is it worth it!

Ive studied under Melissa in a group setting and also privately and I can say without a doubt that she is one of the best you will find. One of the great advantages to working with her is that she truly cares about your development as an artist, and while she will push you and challenge you, she will do it in a way that feeds your soul and encourages you to push yourself, but in a healthy way. I am a better human being and person in addition to being a stronger actor working with her. I am an actor because of her, I feel comfortable saying that, and I now have the confidence to go out on all the auditions I am getting (major network television and SAG feature films). I booked a supporting role in a feature film produced by a major producer in Hollywood and the notes the director gave me after rehearsal on day 1 of the shoot would have scared most actors, but I was able to take them in stride because I studied under her and had the confidence to be able to use certain techniques to navigate the scene! I am now SAG eligible, and have representation with stellar agencies in the Bay Area and Southwest markets, as well as having several management companies reach out to me from Los Angeles, this is all thanks to the confidence that Melissa gave me in my ability to bring truth to my acting, but also how to market myself on the business side!

I took both in-person and online classes at the Empowerhouse Acting Studio for a good 7 months now. I had enough time with Melissa and I can finally rate the Empowerhouse Acting Studio. A little background of myself, I’m from NYC, yes, the city that never sleeps and a place where you want to start your acting career. You will be wondering why I moved to the Bay Area. Well...there aren’t that many teachers who really care about your career. I audit a lot of classes and took them as well in NYC, such as HB, AWAW, NBPH. Don’t get me wrong these are great studios too but honestly... your mentor MATTERS... saying all this,Melissa is a human being who KNOWS how to teach acting...she is grounded and brilliant at what she does. A lot of people think acting is easy but it is probably one of the hardest jobs out there because you really have to understand and KNOW yourself. Acting is such a delicate process and you really got to treat it like you are taking care of a child, your inner child. I believe to have a successful career in this industry, you need to have a proper teacher and Melissa is THAT person. She isn’t just a teacher, she is a working actress as well, who is with one of the Top Agencies in the Bay Area like who doesn’t want to learn from that kind of person. My 14 year old had the most amazing experience. She was so excited to attend her classes even over zoom. Everyone was involved, lots of laughing, fun time training and learning how to read lines and how to present themselves. Can not wait for more classes.
