Craved some good vegan Mexican food on a work trip this weekend. El Papagayo is outstanding. We ordered margaritas and food to go which were delicious! We ate chips and salsas while we waited. They gave us ice for our drinks so they wouldnt get watery on the way back to the hotel. The service was fast and very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend and will be back for sure.

My girlfriends and I really enjoyed this restaurant. The owner was so polite, attentive, and prompt to take care of all of our requests. He was very outgoing and made our visit very comfortable and welcoming. The food was delicious. They also have a Vegan menu, which is awesome since its so hard to find a restaurant to go to with our Vegan friends. We will definitely be back! 💯🥰

Once you park and open the doors youre welcomed by beautiful tile work and tasty smells.What? They have a full vegan menu and a happy hour!Sign me up!Margaritas are delicious! Dont sleep on them.I enjoyed the mole, albondigas, and tostadas.Staff was friendly and helpful.

This was the first time I had been to El Papagayo Restaurant. That have a mango salsa that was really good. I ordered the shrimp super wet burrito and it was big for two people I highly recommend this place. I like the atmosphere. Old people are very nice. Places very clean. And I like the salsa bar many different kinds of salsa. I give them five stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.

This place was excellent! The tacos were absolutely delicious, and the salsa bar was a very pleasant surprise. We also had Cadillac margaritas and they were top notch! The atmosphere felt authentic, complete with an indoor water fountain. The staff was very friendly and attentive. This place is a new favorite restaurant for me! Ill be back any time Im in town.

Loved the food! They are committed to really good vegetarian food as they have a whole menu page devoted to plant based meals. Our server was excellent. The Mariachi group was too loud for us, and our server was very gracious to move us outside. The appetizers were delicious and very filling. Salsa was too mild for our taste, so we asked for more spicy, which turned out to be just right. We will definitely be back!

Vegan Options. Ive only tried a few items including: #1 ranked on the vegan burger challenge...unfortunately I did not like it. It has potential but the sauce was too sweet and the burger falls apart. I did not like the onions smothered in bbq sauce. I prefer the super mac or the cheese skirt burger found at Brodericks and Buck n Sadies. I also tried the baja tacos, tofu was cubed but too big and didnt have flavor. The pineapple or mango sauce was again too sweet. The tortilla was dry and cold. The super burrito was not great either. Im disappointed but keep trying guys! Less is more sometimes. On the plus side...the avacado dip was super awesome (the one that came with the baja tacos) . I put it in my left over burger the next day and it was pretty good.

I went to a vegan tamale-making class and they shared their delicious secrets on making amazing tamales. They have a vegan menu in the restaurant. This is such a huge plus to go to a nice place, with great customer service and eat great food.

Enjoyed everything. It was a splendid ezperience as Frida Kahlo paintings decorated the walls and I admired them walking back from the most wonderful salsa bar. It was a magical time transport into past memory lived. We tasted every salsa offering from mango salsa, guac verde, pico de gallo to the freshly made not out of a can chiles en vinagre. DELICIOSO! oh food....the bomb! Free tortilla chips...crispy and hot for the taking!

Customer service here is always great. My husband ordered a vegan chimichanga a couple weeks ago from here and for some reason, the tortilla tasted old and moldy. The place was under construction, so the dining area was closed.

So I went in to order to go and the host was really nice. Ordered the chili colorado but didnt look at the menu so I didnt realize until after it was almost done that it was vegan...I would have ordered it with meat. So I get it and getting home and tryi g to eat it, the togo plates were the soft paper plate material and the sauces made a hole in the bottom of the container and got on my stuff...need a better to go container like styrofoam so it doesnt break. overall not a bad place and might go back again eventually...

Decided to take a group of 16 to my favorite Mexican restaurant for a Mothers day treat yesterday. Made reservation few days in advance. On arrival, found that they are in the middle of a big renovation and SEVERELY understaffed. If you are understaffed, say so and dont accept reservations that too on Mothers day. This is how you lose credibility. Spent over 2 hours just waiting for the food to arrive. Moms were hungry, frustrated. No salsa bar anymore and it just took a while to get some salsa refills.The only saving grace is that the food was good. But no one cared about the food after the long frustrating delays.Thanks El Papagayo for a great Mothers day experience. NEVER AGAIN!

This is not the authentic family Mexican restaurant it used to be. To be brief, it tastes and looks like its owned and operated by a couple of inexperienced white guys. The guacamole had the flavor and consistency of pre-made mush that had been sitting on ice waiting to be served. The tortilla chips were stale; I usually make an attempt to eat my body weight in tortilla chips, but in this case I left half a basket on the table. The main dishes were just OK. Service was inexcusably poor, as my wife and I were literally the only people in the entire restaurant, and I had to wait for about 15 minutes for our server to wander back around so I could request a refill on my water.

The food here was amazing and they have a special vegan menu with a lot of options. I had the dirty shrimp taco plate and it was delicious. My friend had the vegan meatballs with mole sauce and it was amazing. I took one star away because the host asked how many in my party and told me to wait to be seated and never came back to seat me. The owner came over and was very nice and pleasant and apologized. Overall I would go back again

Just tried for the first time. Easily the best Pozole Ive ever had. Tried a few different tacos, and all were excellent, as well as the range of salsas to pair with them. Picked up a Carne Asada papa G burrito as well, but its going to have to wait for later because the portions are so generous that I now need a nap. This spot is an absolute Carmichael gem!!

Also has a free chips and salsa/guacamole/etc buffet counter thing. The best chicken soup I have ever had, despite being the only chicken soup Ive ever had with cactus in it. The food was pretty good. on Wednesdays they do all you can eat tacos so I enjoyed that but it still came with rice and beans so I filled up on that more than I wanted to. However they did give a little side of guacamole which was awesome. The tacos themselves for a very good, my favorite was the fried tofu. They are very reasonably priced and the food came out quickly and a service was nice. Its a very casual place and there werent too many people there. There are a ton of vegan and vegetarian options!

There is a mango salsa thats really good. The flavors of their dishes are on point. I really like their rice which can be so bland at some restaurants... First time here! The restaurant is pretty inside and the staff are very friendly. The mango salsa is incredible. My bf ordered the chicken tostada, which was a generous serving. The tostada shell was light and flaky and he loved it. I ordered the sopes with carnitas. The carnitas were tender and juicy. The sopes had a sauce that had a little kick to it, which I liked. Definitely not your ordinary Mexican food (and Im Mexican, so I know what Im talking about). Had a frozen magonada that was delicious. Cant wait to try the mole!

The interior is also beautiful, with the carved and painted tables and the elaborate chairs plus welcoming decor. My daughter and I ate here for the first time and I was SO happy with the food and the whole experience!! As a vegan, who loves food, its been challenging to find a restaurant with vegan options that are flavorful and not super pricey. The atmosphere was bright and colorful and clean and also very welcoming. The staff was super friendly and efficient. The food is the real star here. I ordered the 2 item combination and it exceeded my expectations in every way. The fried tofu taco and red enchilada with tofu chorizo were outstanding. Traditional Mexican cuisine has always been one of my favorites but its almost impossible to find as a plant eater. This place nailed it. The food was SO flavorful and fresh, not heavy and greasy. I live about 30 miles away but ill be back real soon. Thank you for a great experience!

What a great surprise! I stumbled on this unassuming restaurant hidden behind a gas station. I ate the Vegan Diabla and it was fantastic. I am not vegan, so I opted for standard cheese and sour cream. They confirmed my choice both when I ordered and when they brought me my food. This might not seem like a big deal to most, but I know it matters to those with specific diet requirements.The service was super nice and the price was great too. They have THE. ABSOLUTE. BEST. MANGO. SALSA. every time I come here, Im greeted with a smile, usually given a table by the window, in the middle, conversed with for a minute or two, told whats a hot seller that day, and waited on like a family member. They take really good care of me, and Ive seen them do the same with every table, everytime Ive been. They have an excellent selection of Vegan options, and while i miss when they had equal vegan and meat, i know that no matter WHAT i order here, Im going to LOVE it. (No joke, their food is the BEST, like Grandmas favorite recipes) their tables are woven and carved into art pieces, the music is great quality, and the view is amazing. I recommend El Papagayo to all my Vegan, Vegetarian, and Foodie friends. Ive heard good things from other meat eaters as well. Me, I just love food, and this Restaurant is one of my favorites.

When Im back in Sac I make it a special point to try and come here. The vegan menu is amazing, I especially like the mole plate. My omnivorous friends and family like their food, too. Delicious food and amazing service. I came here on a whim to eat lunch with my family after our dogs had got groomed. We sat outside and our server was extremely accommodating. We sat next to a water fountain. After he took our order, he brought us our drinks as well as trays for water for our dogs. Sitting outside was nice and peaceful, despite being on a main road. Again, the food was top notch. The kids menu was portioned well and my kids had plenty to eat. I had the super nachos, tacos and posole. I wish I could but obviously couldnt finish it all. I will definitely eat here again.

I had a party of 25 on a Saturday evening at the resturant. I called a week in advance. I arrived early. Two tables were set up, however, one table didnt have enough chairs. Once more of my guests arrived we had to find chair and place them at our table. The service was excellent, and out food and drinks arrived on a timely fashion considering that the place was packed. The waiter was very nice. The food was very good, and their prices are reasonable. I would return, and host another gathering there. My only complaint is the seating arrangement.

Its not to my taste. I had a beef chimichanga the shell was soft and the meat had a terriyaki or soy sauce with oregano flavoring. They do has a vegetarian menu maybe it would be better. My dinning company ordered a chicken quesadilla and the same strange terriyaki/soy sauce issue. Just not a flavor profile we were expecting and it was not good. The service was slow only because I think there were only 2 people working but the person serving was polite and had good tone.

I feel bad for this review. The staff and environment is great! The cocktail was terrible. The food was not tasty. Plain and no flavor. Again I feel bad because everyone there is wonderful. This was one of our favorite restaurants for years. Now under new ownership, it was a huge disappointment. More limited menu, flavors average instead of outstanding. I always wanted to try this place after doing research online and finding out they had vegan/vegetarian options! I went with an old friend of mine whom I havent seen in years and wasnt too impressed. The ambiance was nice...walked in and service seemed slow, although there were several other tables. Our waitress wasnt very friendly and couldve been more attentive to water fill ups, she seemed like she didnt want to be there and it wasnt even busy and the service was sub par. The food was pretty decent .. a little on the salty side but my friend loved it. The salsa bar is self-serve and most of them seemed freshly made. I wouldve given more stars if the service was better; Pretty good food and ambiance tho,ll be back again maybe in the future.

Friends raved about this place. Got the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. Everything on the plate was just average (IMO). Not bad, but it didnt have the flavors I expected. Im not sure if it was the chicken or the red sauce, but something had a spice in it that I dont usually associate with Mexican food (it was more like Indian cuisine). For what its worth, my son actually liked it, so maybe its just me. But if youre expecting a traditional Mexican flavor, this place might not be the place to get it.

Best pozole in Sacramento and under ten bucks! I loooove this place! Ive been there 3x and every time the food has been just like Mom used to make. The pozole has thick chunks of pork that falls apart, so good! They have a help yourself chip and salsa bar with several red and green salsa options, the chips are fresh and perfectly lightly salted. There is a full bar, I have only had the margaritas, you can get them blended, many places will only serve on the rocks.Next time I go Ill try the quinoa burger. They have an extensive vegan menu and everything that I see come out of the kitchen looks amazing but I havent tried the vegan options yet. The owner Rosalinda is a sweet little lady that takes a daily roll in the operations and cooking. She has a sincere desire to deliver healthy Mexican meals and spends much time experimenting to come up with new options. This place was horrible, The chicken was dry and the whole beans arent even pinto beans and the spanish rice? orange, how do you get orange rice from a red tomatoe? Never again.
