Stellar haircut! This haircut was for my wedding, and I was thrilled with how it looked. Three weeks later it STILL looks great, and my wife just said she thinks it could be the best haircut I’ve ever gotten. Charles absolutely killed it!

Charles is the man, incredibly welcoming, easy conversation and very efficient. My cut looks great, he knew exactly what to do and how to style my hair. He used rose water to wet my hair, so I smell great, gave me a hot towel wipe down and got me in and out quick. The shop was buzzing when I walked in but the vibe was mellow. You can tell every person there is in rhythm and knows what theyre doing because everything is maintained to the tiniest detail. Will definitely be going back.

My 10 year old son has very curly hair that he grew down to his shoulders. He was ready to cut it short but we needed to find a barber we could trust and stick with for years to come. We were fortunate enough to find Michael. He was amazing with my son. Gave him the full barber experience complete with a wash and style.The shop is extremely inviting and relaxed. This was my second time getting a haircut at CBB, by Mr. Charles Blades himself, and I’m so glad I discovered them. It was super easy to book an appointment and I arrived to a very clean, pleasant atmosphere, with amazing jazz playing...where Charles was ready and waiting for me. Charles started by asking me questions and listening to my needs. That was huge. He didn’t rush either and I appreciated that. The result was the best haircut I’ve had in a very long time. Asked for a simple 2 taper on the sides and cropped volume on top for some texture and shape — you’ll be surprised how many barbers get a simple cut wrong. Michael gave me the only haircut I’ve been happy with right after the barber for the past year. Such a hospitable and fun guy, in fact everyone there was so nice and charming. Left the barber with a skip in my step; skipping back to the salon as soon as the hair looks muggy again. This place won’t dissappoint!

Ive been going to CBB for over 3 years now with no complaints. My barber of choice is Alex. He always gives a great cut. All the barbers from the head honcho Charles to Bella to Mike contribute to the vibe and atmosphere. I like the music they play too. Ive shazamed a bunch of songs there.

Awesome experience. Mike did such a good job cleaning up my hair. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. I left my dog in the front but when he started crying, Mike let my dog sit in my lap haha. this was my first professional haircut in years. i stopped going to salons because i always wanted to cry after they made me look like some old lady karen. i left here feeling fresh as hell haha. i will be coming back!

“So fresh and so clean”. That is the best way to describe my experience at Charles barbershop. In between the eucalyptus hot towel and the precision with the razor blade on it. This place has such an ambience and leaves you with such a great impression that it makes one wonder where have they been all my life. I just happened to be in the area and I was able to call them for a walk-in. They were friendly from the start and they way they treated their other customers show they care about service for people of all ages. I’m blessed to have met Charles and Alejandro and I hope they keep up with their amazing work.

Thought this was a fine haircut, unfortunately when I got home and took a closer look I saw a decent chunk of hair missing above my right ear. Photos of both sides included (the cleanup around the ears isn’t great on the “properly done” side either).Hoped that this place would be a decent barbershop here in Oakland but looks like that’s not going to be it. On the plus side, there’s free beer, although with that quality the cut isn’t nearly worth $35 even with beer included (lining up both sides properly is 101-level stuff which you can get done right even at Supercuts).Edit: after taking a shower I saw that the hair on the top of my head is visibly longer on one side than on the other (left side is longer than right side). This is so amazingly bad that I just dont know what to say. Changing to a (very well deserved) 1 star. Dont go here unless you have another $40 to spend on fixing your hair afterwards.

I can’t believe Charles Blades has been there for 17 years and I didn’t know it.I have been searching for a solid barber experience in Oakland for a while.Definitely found it and my barber. I booked with Alejandro on a Sunday- also great bc most shops aren’t open Sundays. Ale was welcoming, asked me how I wanted my cut exactly, and took his time to show me so I would be happy with his work. Had good conversation about local stuff, sports, news, etc..Ale gave me a straight razor shave and did an excellent job. No bleeding, skin is soft now and feels clean. Especially loved the hot eucalyptus towel at the end. A great luxury experience to relax after a long gnarly work week. In and out in an hour. Alejandro was mellow, easy going and kind. He thanked me several times for being a guest. I really respect that as a professional hotel executive. Service matters to me so much.Haircut looks fresh and clean - i left feeling great. Great spot to get a haircut. Super friendly barbers that really know the city and can give great recs on music and food. usually playing some chill jazz music on speakers which is always nice But most importantly they give a great haircut. While expensive, their Cut and Shave is fantastic with a hot towel and close shave which leaves you feeling quite refreshed and looking sharp. Only downside as I mentioned is the price which is certainly not cheap but if you can afford it, definitely a great spot to be.

I was in town for the month visiting my partner and wanted to get my look together, and had a last minute opportunity to get a cut. The online booking was so easy I expected something to be wrong when I got there but all was good. I booked with Karen and was beyond pleased with her and the shop. Highly recommend, real Oakland vibes. Local POC owned almost 20 years now, queer friendly, kid friendly,,,, all people friendly, and excellent stylists each and every and every one! Enjoy a complimentary beverage, check out the great modern Basquiat/Warhol art on deck vibe, drop your phone and listen in on the real life convo. Ive had hair cuts from 3 barbers from this place. I liked Karen and James. Their work was not exceptional but still pretty good. Definitely recommend this place to try out. Fun ambience with a lot of funky skateboards and figurines on the wall. They offer you beer too.

Karen is an artist. The shop itself is tastefully decorated, welcoming, and comforting. Every barber I have seen working there looks just how you would want them to, stylish as hell. They all do incredible work from what I’ve seen. I’ve had my hair cut by Karen twice and they were the best two haircuts of my life. After decades of cheap mediocre haircuts, Karen’s first cut made me feel great right out of the shop. It grew out wonderfully for months and after the second cut I can honestly say my hair has never looked better. GO HERE! If that isn’t enough, there is a cold beer waiting for you when you arrive.

When I lived in Berkeley, it was more than worth it to hop over to Oakland for the fun atmosphere, fantastic music, great conversations, and excellent cuts Charles Blades Barber Shop offers. I moved down to Monterey and after a few attempts to find a comparable cut, I am resigned to trips back to the Bay for haircuts. Its absolutely worth it, especially with the expertise that Karen offers. Karen is down to earth and offers wonderful company and a phenomenal cut. I gave Karen a vague description of what I wanted and got the exact asymmetrical cut I was hoping for with check ins along the way to ensure we were on the same page. Karen does crisp fades and I have never been happier with my undercut. I appreciate that the staff is covid conscious because it makes the environment in the shop much more comfortable. Charles Blades has a rad crew who offers warm welcomes and excellent cuts. Its easy to call or book an appointment online and the ample parking nearby makes it a seamless trip.

Got haircut done by James. Not impressed at all. My style is quite simple. 5 on the top down to a 1 on the sides and back. Got nicked in the back of the neck twice. 1st time stung and I let him know that it hurt. Said he never heard his clients complain about that clipper before. Congratulations? What am I supposed to say to that? Second time left the mark seen in the pic below. Hairline in the front is completely uneven with chunks at the front missing. Didn’t notice full effect until I got home.**EDIT**Response to owner:I honestly could care less how many 5 star reviews he had from how many different people. Im not those people. My review reflects my own experience. The results speak for themselves and the pictures I posted speak volumes. Charles was extremely responsive. I wanted to send my father and nephew to a barber shop that was professional but relaxed and they exceeded my expectations. My father had a facial for the first time and Bella worked miracles. Drew did a great job lining up my nephew. When I first moved to Oakland from Atlanta, I went to several barbers before finding Charles Blades shop. I was so happy I did. While Charles is my go-to barber, several other folks have helped me out (as well as some friends). Listened to what we wanted him to get done etc. very friendly and pleasant. The shop is clean and very welcoming. Not loud, not rowdy nor noisy. Most of all Charles is a great artist and craftsman. The atmosphere might be great but all the barbers are not. My husband visited this location with two of our boys for a cut on May 31 around 3:30pm. A woman cut the boys hair who continued to say she had appointments coming in. Apparently she had appointments or did not feel comfortable cutting a childs head. The edging was horrible and the cut was uneven. We were got...$50 for two childrens cuts under the age of 12. She made a quick buck and thats it. There is no quality customer service in that. Very disappointed, if she didnt feel comfortable she should not have offered to do the cut for children. Keep in mind, these are not children who were crying or could not sit still. The female barber simply had no skills.

I had thought I left a review previously but here I go.The most important thing of any Barber is how well they cut hair. Charles has shaped my beastly little beard extremely well. His use of scissors on a beard of my length keeps the split ends away and keeps it much more manageable. He is an artist with scissors and clippers.The location is perfect also, right off the hwy and the surrounding parking is all safe.I have never felt so at home at a Barbershop. Charles makes you feel like you grew up together, if you want good conversation and that barbershop ambience look no further.

Love the owner and his professional experience However, I got butchered yesterday by one of his employees on my haircut. I booked an appt for my son and I, they were 30 min late, I had to take a work call so my son went first, people kept on coming for appts and the guy starts rushing and told a guy who was waiting that he was next (I was supposed to be next) however the guy noticed the delay and he canceled. First I want to say that the owner and the people who work at this shop are wonderful people. Ive had a chance to speak with most of them and theyre cool / down to earth people that Id enjoy meeting and chatting with at a social event.That said, Im super disappointed with the customer service. Multiple times now Ive scheduled a haircut, go in 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time, and inevitably wait 20+ (sometimes 30-40) minutes AFTER my scheduled appointment time to be seen. I get that you can be overbooked, or that you can have hold ups, but when all the stylists are chatting with each other during their haircuts and generally letting themselves be so distracted, it just adds insult to injury. Its no wonder I can never get in at my scheduled time. Most recently, I left because I had been sitting there unattended for 30 minutes, in total waiting 45 minutes from the time I arrived.Please, plase fix this issue. I love the shop but its just not fair to customers to deal with this level of disrespect/unprofessionalism.

I love these guys but two out of the last three times I had my haircut there, I had to have it recut. The first time Charles himself left a big patch uncut which he fixed the next day. Then I got a very good cut from the young man who cuts even though he was very fast. Ive gotten a haircut here a few times, and it is a really great time; If youre used to going to a hair salon its going to blow your mind. The barbers are always bantering with each other keeping things interesting, and everyone here knows how to cut a mans hair. The more experienced barbers have been cutting hair for 20 or 30 years, and it really shows. Coming here after getting your hair cut by a stylist and not a barber will change the way you think about your hair, and you will be really upset you havent always used a barber.Just so you are aware, this isnt a discount hair salon, you arent going to walk out of here spending $15, and your hair wont look like you spent $15 on it either. It will look good, and it will last you for months, you wont need to come back a week later because they butchered your head. It might be more expensive than youre used to for a haircut, but its worth it.
