This is an old school type place! It feels like one of those historical places thats a big part of the community. With the different shade of red upholstery and pleather booths gives you that 70s vibe. Then we get an older waitress with blond hair up in a bun. It was Classic! To top it off live music from Ray who I remember from the butcher shop! The menu is simple but the prices are on the high end. What you pay for in my opinion is the Atmosphere the place was packed!! Would have been an excellent experience if it wasnt so hot inside! Wed actually just walk out for some fresh air! We wanted to stay at the bar for some drinks after dinner but it was just too hot inside and thats on a cool day. I cant imagine how hot it gets in the summer. Overall it was good food, friendly service good experience. Small parking lot in the back or street parking if available.

This is an amazing restaurant! Love everything about this place! My favorite bartender and server is Manny.. he is polite, friendly and the best bartender ever! He makes the best Mexican candy shots. The ambiance is amazing with music will transport you to a better era.

First time here. Loved it! Food was amazing, service was great. The decor was fabulous, love the 40s vibe. All the classic movie stars on the walls. We sat under a picture of Errol Flynn, I think. Pretty cool.

Our favorites are the prime rib, pork chops, fried calamari and creamy chicken soup! Excellent food in general. They are famous for their prime rib and offer a special anniversary priced prime rib dinner every year as a Thank you to their customers. They have a very friendly wait staff. This is a historic restaurant that was frequented by the Hollywood elite in the 40s and 50s, and still draws crowd at dinner time due to their high quality entrees. For us, it is well worth making the 12 mile special trip. Update: Stopped by for prime rib, creamy chicken soup, and garlic mashed potatoes. Excellent as usual, with fast friendly service! Update: Tried their sirloin steaks, excellent! Update: Prices have increased again, but quality remains excellent. Got the cheesecake dessert. It was very tasty, but at $7.95 it wasnt a good value. Update: Prices have increased yet again. This is becoming a pricey restaurant, however the quality remains excellent. Update: Another price increase. Excellent prime rib and sirloin steak. Update: Our first disappointing experience. Decided to try the fish and chips. For $25.95, we expected way better. Sadly the fish was prepared similar to corn dogs, but with 75% breading. Just a pinky finger sized piece of fish in each. Minus one star. On the other side of the spectrum, the boneless pork chops were excellent as usual. Update: Another price increase. Excellent prime rib and sirloin steak. Update: Got the Pork Chops and Prime Rib entrees. Both were excellent.

Food was delicious, fresh, and portions were more than sufficient. A wonderful surprise was the live music! And some guest singer, what a treat! I was celebrating my birthday by myself, so they gifted me a slice of cake with candle and song. Customer service was great! The decor is old-Hollywood style, although you would not realize this from the exterior.

Cafe La Maze is easily one of my favorite places to go ever. The food is great each time and the atmosphere is 10/10. But what makes the place is the service! Specifically from Manny, Nicole, and Monty. They are the sweetest most ATTENTIVE employees ever! Not to mention the mean martinis they make(perfect every single time) .They go out of their way to make all of their guests feel welcomed and comfortable. Especially if they notice you’re having a tough day they’ll cheer you right up with a joke or two. Long story short… it is definitely worth a trip to visit this fabulous place, you will not regret it.

Cafe La Maze is well above 5 stars.Food, music in the evenings, the decor is as true as it gets for keeping original.La Maze is beyond just being a restaurant.... We had a ribeye dinner and a mushroom appetizer but was not as expected; It was mediocre, very low quality stakes, the potatoes and vegetables were not tasty, the salad was very basic, the mushroom appetizer was not fresh, it was steemed with very little flavor, and not as discribed in the menu. Do not recommend it. Service was ok.

Let me share with you a little magic. Now I know my reviews may be a bit lengthy and long-winded now if thats the case move on this isnt for you.However, if youd like to find an amazing place to be yourself and not get kicked out, this place may be for you. Now this was based on a short time we all know had a had a few more drinks I probably wouldnt be writing this or would be trying to go fundme some bail money.I had a beautiful drink made by Manny that not only made me smile when it hit my tasebuds but also made me know I was in the right place. I had come to this establishment about a month earlier and sat at the bar for a drink. The personalities are a medley of oh wow, thats awesome to o wow!My advice is to come with a friend as you have someone to talk to if no one is there, but honestly, youd probably make a friend if you didnt. Be kind and ask people questions. Thats how you learn about other humans. But if you choose to come and not talk, at least be kind. These people work hard to male you happy, and they deserve to be treated well.Cafe La Maze, you have no idea what an asset you have with Manny. He is you places and youre lucky he is there creating such a welcoming atmosphere. Thank you.

I recently visited Cafe Lamaze with my wife for the first time and can say we were pleasantly surprised. I ordered a steak with baked potato and my wife a chicken salad. Both were very tasty. Service was excellent. Restaurant was almost full to capacity. We will be back

I write this with a heavy heart because my husband and i use to RAVE about this gem and now we are writing a bad review. What used to be an amazing steak house for date night or special birthday dinners now serves mediocre food with an unseasoned steak that applebees could give me better honestly. Our most recent attempt to give them 1 last chance was another waist of time and money and the worst food weve received from La Maze to date. A call to management about $135 pick up order that was hardly edible was made up to us by offering a $25 gift card. We declined and wont be returning. I hope La Maze ownership turns this place back to the gem it once was but until then please save your time and money.

Ordered a fillet mignon and they brought a skirt steak with a hole in the center. It took 30 minutes for them to bring the right steak and that was also not cooked to the right temperature. Was so disappointed that I that I had to send everything back and just didn’t eat dinner that night.

My wife and I received a Cafe La Maze email offering to knock $20 off our bill if we came and spent $50 or more.We got this email because we had eaten here before and signed up for the email for the special offers because it was really great, but that was over a year ago. Yep, COVID-19.Boy I hadnt tasted fresh ground black pepper probably since the last time I was here. Wow! What a difference, and it was really great that we got the raw horseradish instead of just the creamy type.Everything we got was great. Better than great; fresh salad, the steaks or medium just as we requested. My mouth is watering just thinking about it right now.Funny thing is, my wifes didnt finish all of hers and she told me she was going to save it for tomorrow. I told her I would just finish it cuz of course tomorrow its not going to be as good as it was for dinner.... boy was I wrong. Early this afternoon Im smelling garlic mashed potatoes and grilled beef. I walk into the kitchen and shes eating the leftovers. She actually let me have some and I couldnt believe it. My mouth is still watering while Im writing this review. I dont know if it could really be this way but it tasted just as good if not better than what we had the night before. Ive never experienced anything like it.The service was exceptional The food was great and everyone there seemed to be really enjoying themselves.If youre checking to see as to whether you might want to go try this place and you havent before, just do it.You wont regret it.

The steak that I ordered came as an oddly butchered chunk off meat. The quality was extremely poor and had an unsatisfactory amount of non-rendered fat, no crust or texture to the meat when cooked like it was prepared by baking, and required additional seasoning and sauces to be palatable. Ill never eat here again. Try here once, maybe. This place will disappear if not for its loyal local patrons and coupon discounts.

Manny was actually the worst server I’ve ever had. This was my first time visiting La maze cafe so I was excited. First off when my family and I ( PARTY OF JUST THREE) walked in we were never greeted just simply told by manny to sit anywhere where there was dining sets at. I asked if any booth were available he then again repeated himself and said “ANY TABLE WITH DINING SETS ARE AVAILABLE” with the worst attitude. Once seated we ordered and when the food arrived the French onion soup was horrible I couldn’t even take a second bite. So I asked if I could instead replace it with a tomato soup. He then asked if anything was wrong with it and that said I still would be charged. (Being charged for the cup of soup that I didn’t like didn’t bother me it was his approach to the situation that really bothered me especially considering that I myself work in a restaurant) He never apologized (not that he has too) but even just a “so sorry about that I’d be glad to replace it” would have be the bare minimum. he instead made me feel like I inconvenienced him over a CUP OF SOUP. He then brought by tomato soup which literally tasted just as bad as the French onion couldn’t even take two bites. Not only did he have an unapproachable attitude but he genuinely was intentionally uninterested in even servicing us. He touched the table for one glass of water and the check. I got up got a box & bag from the server station myself. Beyond disappointing. The blonde server on the hand was bubbly sweet and very attentive not even being our server she dropped our check and was doing way more than she should have been doing. With the amount of table she had she kept a beautiful attitude. Unfortunately she was the only part of the experience that was good. I don’t and would never recommend manny as a server or bartender or even basic host. He did a terrible at his job.03/19/24

We enjoyed tender and juicy prime rib complete with delicious sides - you get to choose from a satisfying variety.The atmosphere is friendly and the staff very friendly and on top of things. We got great service. Splitting the Lamaze cut, we still had enough leftovers for another meal.Note to self: save room for dessert next time.

This is speakeasy kind of gem. This restaurant has been here for years. Its very nostalgic. Rumor is the stars used to eat here before going to Caliente to gamble. Very disappointed. Used to come here with my Dad and the prime rib sandwich was awesome. Today it came out cold and the meat just had no flavor. Had to use a lot of salt. Even the horseradish had no taste. How could that be? The service was very good. The food was not so good. Not sure Ill be back again.

Used go here a lot in the 80s. I was a lot younger and a lot of under the influence. So a few decades later...Seems the same, except for the menus under glass. Back in the day I would have the two lobster tails. But these days Im into prime rib so I had the Grand Cut, my friend had the La Maze Cut, while my girl opted for the smallest filet mignon. She started with an order of fried zucchini, a large order for the table. I had well drinks, double scotch neat, she had a powerful Long Island ice tea, my friend had a Diet Coke. She and I had salads, he had the New England clam chowder. There was also bread and whipped butter for the table. I ended up having three more doubles. We all had garlic mash potatoes and broccoli and carrots for our sides. What can I say, prime rib is prime rib no matter how you cut it. I like to take my beef rare, hamburgers bloody rare if I have a choice. Maybe next time Ill go retro and have the two lobster tails. Cafe La Maze is just like I left it in the 80s, very good; it did not disappoint even after all these years.

I love this place! Very ol skool with burgundy leather booths and pictures of Hollywood stars from the 40s to the 60s! Cafe La Maze used to be a stop for actors before travelling into Mexico to go to the races, etc. I wish I couldve been there back then...I bet Cafe La Maze was notorious!👍🏾👍🏾😉 Oh yes as for the food...absolutely delicious! This place has a great quality steak for the price, especially if you get the Groupon. My boneless ribeye is always cooked perfectly. Mash and veggies are always good, too. The onion rings added to the top of the steak were delicious. The old school atmosphere, with the red booths and red wallpaper made me feel like I was transported back in time.

The prime rib was very good. The service was terrible. When we sat down, the restaurant was close to empty. The waitress took a bit long to take our order and bring our drinks. Our meal came in the appropriate time frame as the restaurant was now busy. The worst part was how long it took to get our bill even after requesting it twice (30 minutes and that was after we waited a reasonable time for it to arrive after the meal. The patrons were mostly elderly as was the help. Nothing wrong with that, just commenting on it. There are great old photos on the walls of celebrities from the 50s back to the 20s. I would give this place another chance, as all but the service was nice.

My mother in law, my wife and I went here for dinner last night and it was delicious. We all had the 9oz New York Strip with baked potato and fresh veggies. The atmosphere is very relaxing and inviting. Dim lights and plenty of seating and space. Service was great as well as the food. Portions are well worth the price. As the prices are a little higher than your normal steak house. I definitely recommend this place.

Older steak house with a local vibe. Took the family because we were looking for a good steak. It’s dark and outdated so not really a great atmosphere. It’s also super loud so having a conversation is challenging. The garlic mashed potatoes were really good but the prime rib and filet were both bland and the filet was also dry but otherwise tender. This is my dads favorite place. He loves to bring my mom here on dates even though theyve been married for over 40 years.I accompanied them the last time that they came they have live music which is really nice. The servers were friendly and although the place is dark, this adds completely to the ambiance.This place has been around for a very long time and is a classic part of National City. I recommend checking it out at least once to see if its for you.

My husband and I actually positioned ourselves so neither had that as our view.2. The waitress was so very sweet, but sort of oblivious to the obvious, such as even asking if we liked our meal. We didnt like it at all, because it was lacking flavor in every way. We asked about the steak and she missed her cue even then to concern herself with it.3. Although the steak was cooked to the correct doneness, we had to use steak sauce on the steak at a steakhouse? This should never be the case, especially at this price point. We dont even own steak sauce in our own home. The baked potato and fried shrimp were barely warm enough- the cheese wouldnt even warm when packed into the potato, much less melt. The sour cream was too thick to taste. The mushrooms were without a doubt good, but since everything else lacked flavor, I ended up pouring their juice onto the other foods to flavor them. There needs to be a balance of flavors and attention to detail at this price point.**Maybe this establishment was hit hard by Covid cutbacks? It seems like it was once nice and maybe changed hands to a lighter wallet toward ambiance and ingredient, but probably maintaining the same price point. We wouldnt return, but we appreciate the sweet demeanor of the waitress and wish her the best!

I would not recommend this place. I don’t understand the great reviews it has received. I have past this restaurant for many years but never had a chance to come in because having children they are not interested in having a steak dinner. I don’t understand why the food took a while when they were basic ingredients on the plate. The steak was cooked fine at the right temperature but had absolutely no seasoning . Their was no reason to continue eating it if their is no enjoyment in food. The broccoli was brown and the carrots were hard like they gave them a flash steam. From the photos of past famous people to the foil wallpaper this restaurant is symbolic of a classy steakhouse. Very clean and organized. Their rolls are light and warm. Had a ribeye steak with king crab the steak was tough and stringy crab tasted like it frozen for a long time. Very disappointed with the meal. The food was good but I will say there was a few misses. I read online that parking was poor and that was no lie. The parking lot was small so be prepared to walk a bit if it is a busy night. Call for a reservation for sure because this place will get busy. I wanted to try the creme brulee but they said they were out. Every time we come here it has been pretty good. Waitstaff varies with experience I guess. We tried a deep-fried zucchini appetizer for the first time and we did not expect the shear size of the appetizer plate. There were 32 pieces of deep-fried zucchini. So I get the History of this location, and this was our first dining experience here.I think this restaurant would attract more guests if the outside was updated and modernized. Food was good, Prime Rib is legit! Reasonable corking fees and phenomenal staff. Only reason for 4/5 is my Rib Eye was overcooked (came to me a hard medium instead of medium rare)...flavor was good though!

The restaurant reminded me of the Red Fox which sorry to say recently closed. The service was old school. Not only our waitress and runner delivered great service but the manager was roaming and checking that we were satisfied.This kind of great service is often hard to find. The quality of our steak was superb juicy tender and delicious.The rolls appeared fresh baked. I would highly suggest this restaurant for good service and great steaks.

Our waitress was slow, my porterhouse was dry, my vegetables were cold and I had to order my own drink from the bar. Yet, we were forced into a 18% tip without any forewarning (we had two minor children, one of whom did not eat, who were each counted as adults???). Awful place and the management was absolutely disgraceful. Dont be fooled by the otherwise nice (but very loud) environment.

Love the prime rib. Tender and flavorful. The deserts are to die for, you get plenty of food for the price. The atmosphere is that of the late 50 - 60s era with the pictures of Clark Gable and other past movie stars on the wall. They have a bar live band most every night. This place does have cocktails and mixed drinks as well as IPAs and an assortment of bottled beers. Definitely recommend a stop.

Bartender constantly fingered his nose while serving food and drinks. Gross. Then I was overcharged for happy hour food. On the plus side the prime rib Bites were good. Drinks were too mild, I didnt even get a mild buzz with 2 margaritas. I wont be going back any time soon.

We started with 2 appetizers, coconut shrimp and the prime rib bites everything was hot and fresh. I had the Rib eye it comes with a salad, vegetables and baked potatoe I brought 70% home. I couldnt eat anymore lol.My husband got the beef bone and wow it was definitely a great portion to fill him up with 3 full beef bones filled with meat. We came for my birthday and They sang happy birthday to me and brought me a amazing piece of cake. Unfortunately we left our cell phones in the car so didnt take any photos.They had live music on a Tuesday which was great, we couldnt find any other steak house open during covid on a Tuesday with music.P.S The Mexican candy Martini is dangerously good 👍 and the service was one of a kind for a special birthday night. Just wanted to start out with how disappointed with the person who cooks at this restaurant. I went in last night for my birthday and had to send my food back multiple times. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare with steamed broccoli and garlic mashed potatoes. The first steak was very RARE and the mashed potatoes did not have garlic. The waiter then took the steak and came back with the same steak two more times and the small pieces were over cooked and the steak was still RARE. Another waitress came to help my waiter and asked if she could do anything else to help and so I asked for a ribeye steak instead. When I got the next steak it was still RARE and not medium rare, which at that point I was too hungry to even complain but didn’t even want to eat much anymore. They did nothing to make it right. Or ask if I wanted something to eat while I waited for my next steak to be cooked. All I know is that it wasn’t fun to watch my friend eat while waiting more than 3 times for the cook to get my order incorrect. Thanks for ruining my birthday dinner! I will NOT be eating here AGAIN!

La Maze is a restaurant with lots of full booth seating. Ive heard that there steak dinners are very good, Ive not tried the food. On Sundays there is dancing with a live band starting at around 7 ending at 12:AM. Its an older crowd with very happy people in there late 50s and up dancing the night away. Drinks are reasonably priced.

The food was good but not amazing. Service was great. The music was a little loud for me. Thats a problem because Im hard of hearing and background noise makes it hard for me to hear. So, good food and service. Not particularly quiet, or very private. I suggest you check it out for yourself.

Walking into this National City steakhouse you feel like you are thrown back into the 50s. Photos of 1950s stars are along the walls over red patent leather booths. The lighting is usually a little low. There is live music every night, I believe, which is a nice touch. Their prime rib is excellent. The lobster is also good.

Classic Steak Joint complete with scuffed red leatherette booths and a bar. Family owned, La Maze has been a National City favorite for decades. If youve got steak in mind for dinner, I highly recommend the prime rib! $75 for two petite cuts with a cocktail is a fine deal. Service is excellent - thank you, Nicole! We loved everything about La Maze and will be back. Parking can be a challenge...next time well take an Uber and have TWO cocktails!
