Dr. Hwang was amazing! He took the time to sit with us in my wife’s room and not only gave us all the facts and what to expect in surgery but also to get to know us. He is a super skilled surgeon and compassionate man - HIGHLY recommend if you need a neurosurgeon.

We can’t say how Thankful we are for Dr. Hwang. My husband was in so much agony and pain when we met him we genuinely believed he listened and cared . Dr Hwang was extremely attentive and made him feel super comfortable with his options and at the end of the day did proceed with surgery. Best decision ever. Amazing bed side manner and my husband is now completely pain free. Our Hero!

The support and aid that my father has received from Dr. Hwang and his team was incredible. No word’s cannot describe how thankful and grateful my family is to him and his team for supporting and providing such a good care for my father. Dr. Hwang’s was extremely polite, genuine, and respectful from the first office visit to when my father discharged after the surgery. We are grateful and relieved to have met Dr. Hwang for my father! Dr. Hwang is THE most compassionate, caring, dependable, patient, and thoughtful doctor I have ever met. His bedside manner is simply unrivaled and unheard of. The degree of care he devotes to his patients is exceptional and rare. I know this because I am his patient. It’s a scary experience to end up in a situation where you need emergency disc surgery, but he walked me through every step, made me feel safe and heard, and checked up on me regularly following my surgery to ensure I was healing ok. He was in touch with my husband and family to keep them up to date on everything. He sets the bar extremely high and other doctors would greatly benefit their patients by looking to his example for compassion, sympathy, and genuine care.Dr. Hwang saved me from what I can only describe as torturous, unceasing pain that I suffered through for six agonizing months. I had a ruptured disc that had sealed itself onto my nerves, causing unimaginable pain. Surgery was always the last resort from my PCP, but I wish I would’ve gotten it immediately. I was willing to try anything but surgery, and I did, including chiropractic care, physical therapy, and pain management. But the pain became so debilitating that I couldn’t walk or get out of bed. Eventually I could barely move without screaming. I lived with what felt like a butcher knife in my back for longer than I would ever wish anyone to endure. I wish I could go back in time and find Dr. Hwang immediately, but ultimately, my experience led me to the Mission Hospital emergency room where — THANK GOD — Dr. Hwang was on call, and saved me from the pain with a lower lumbar discectomy surgery, and I am so eternally thankful.I am 35 and have a lot of life left to live, and I will never trust anyone else with my spine but Dr. Hwang. I will be grateful to Dr. Hwang for the rest of my life, because he is the reason I am able to live it and enjoy life again. I cannot recommend Dr. Brian Hwang enough. Seriously, he is a rockstar.I had a massive herniation in my L3-L4 disc that was causing a tremendous amount of pain, numbness, and frustration due to drop foot. I ended up needing surgical intervention. Dr. Hwang was personable, compassionate, and set my mind at ease. He and his staff are communicative, thoughtful, and thorough.Upon awaking from surgery, I was already able to feel more in my leg and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Dr. Hwang saved me. If you or your loved one are in need of a spinal surgeon, look no further.

Dr. Hwang sets the bar high!!!My family met Dr. Hwang in October 2023 when my dad suffered a rare neurological event. He needed emergency medical intervention and his chances of survival were very low. Thankfully Dr. Hwang had recent experience treating this type of brain trauma and SAVED MY DAD’S LIFE. Not only is Dr. Hwang a top notch neurosurgeon, he also expresses empathy and understanding, has amazing communication skills and very supportive. He took every opportunity to make sure I understood each medical intervention and procedure. I felt safe with my dad under Dr. Hwang’s care and trusted his lead. Dr. Hwang still follows my dad’s recovery journey long after he’s been out of his care. We are blessed to have had Dr. Hwang leading the way. He was our guiding light through dark waters and my family is ever so grateful.

When I first met Dr. Hwang last November, I was in such a pain that almost disabled me. I was limping all the time and suffering a constant pain.Dr. Hwang explained me all details about my problem and started my treatment .I had my lower back problem for many years, but I was hesitant to do the surgery. But this time when we decided to do the surgery, I was completely confident that I am in good hands that can be trusted.Now It is almost 2 weeks after my surgery. On January 27, 2024, my sister (Karen) suffered a Hemorrhagic Stroke. Karen was found on the ground of her condo four days later; her future outlook did not look promising at that point. As the fluid in her brain could not properly drain and steadily built up, Karen became very lethargic and confused.On February 8, 2024, Dr Hwang performed an ETV (Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy) surgery to allow the brain fluid to drain. Almost immediately we began to see drastic improvement in her condition, and she has continued to improve daily. Karen’s neurological functions are now very close to fully restored, she’s improving greatly with her physical rehabilitation and successfully living on her own.We owe a dept of gratitude to Dr Hwang for his masterful efforts. Now that Im writing this review I have tears in my eyes, its all because of miracle hands that Dr. Brian hwang have .not only because he is extremely knowledgebe and experienced in neurological field, but he saved my husband’s life. Where do you begin to thank someone for saving your life? It has been a little over a year since Dr Brian Hwang performed my emergency craniotomy to remove a brain tumor found just hours before.Dr Hwang truly cares about his patients and caregivers. He helped my family navigate the enormity of my sudden condition and diagnosis. His bedside manner is superb exhibiting patience, calmness & honesty.I remember waking up the next morning from surgery and when nurses or staff asked who my surgeon was, the reply of Dr Hwang was always met with “he’s the best!”. I’m grateful to have fallen in to the hands of this superior neurosurgeon. Dr. Brian Hwang is the best of the best. He is the highest quality surgeon that is out there and is the reason I am walking again. He performed a laminectomy/discectomy on me and kept it minimally invasive.He spent more time with me and my family answering our questions and guiding us through the process than nurses and doctors.I was 100% confident in his ability, not only because of his qualifications, depth of experience, training, and skill set but also because of his character and sincerity for his care of his patient—me.After the surgery was over he spent time with me and my family checking in on me and has been quick to respond to any questions and concerns I have expressed via our digital communication.Not only am I pain free after being unable to walk and in excruciating pain 24/7 l, but I am healthily on a recovery road back to surfing, rock climbing, and mountain biking. What a great experience to a not so good injury. Staff was friendly, kind and professional, short wait time in the waiting room as well as short wait time once in exam room. Where do I start with Dr. Hwang, compassionate, he did not rush through the appointment and thoroughly explained my injury and a plan to get me to 100%, refreshing experience. As a patient in the Emergency Room at Mission Hospital I had the luck to have Dr. Hwang consult on my case after being told another surgeon would be coming to see me. While I wish I wasn’t in the position of needing a neurosurgeon to begin with, I can only say that I feel like it was some sort of divine intervention that led me to Dr. Hwang. To say that Dr. Hwang is intelligent, compassionate, caring and patient would all be true, yet a gross understatement at the same time. He’s so much more. I’ve spent much of my adult life in the company of doctors due to both my profession as well as being a caregiver for multiple family members and Dr. Hwang is unique. He’s a skilled surgeon that still manages to be the kindest human imaginable as well as completely accessible. His perseverance on behalf of his patients is admirable. He is everything you would want in a surgeon, for yourself or your loved ones, and he’s exceeded every expectation I could ever have. While Dr. Hwang ultimately did perform a surgery on my back, my case was complicated and he didn’t rush me into surgery. He spent crazy amounts of time answering all of my questions and just making sure I was comfortable at every stage, from initial diagnosis to surgery and even now through an extended recovery. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Hwang for many reasons and most importantly for seeing past my diagnosis and making me feel seen and heard as a whole person.

Met Dr. Brian Hwang the morning of my husbands brain surgery (hemicranyectomy) mid-Jan23. He explained to family his very critical condition and the pros and cons of the surgery. He quickly and efficiently took charge of his care for one month in the hospital. Three months later (mid-April), I am pleased to say my husband is recovering well after Dr. Hwang performed his second surgery (cranioplasty).We are truly forever thankful and grateful for his surgical skills, compassionate bedside manners and his frequent visits to see husband and family. Dr Hwang gave my dad a second chance to life! He saved my dad from what was the worst day of our lives!! My dad had an unexpected brain bleed. My 75-year-old healthy dad was declining fast and needed emergency surgery. He was transferred from the emergency room in Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach to saddleback Memorial where Doctor Hwang was thankfully there to help my dad! My dad was in such bad shape the chance of him surviving was slim. . I was not prepared to lose my dad so quickly., dr Hwang took us to a room to explain how severe he was and gave us two options. I was lost with the decision. I looked at him helplessly and asked, what would you do if this was your dad. He said, I would give me a shot, so he rushed him back and performed emergency surgery! 7 days in ICU, in an induced coma my dad opened his eyes and asked what happened to me. With time to heal my dad has full quality of life back! Dr says he is the miracle man, NO dr Hwang is the miracle man. Best surgeon out there! He is honestly such a wonderful person, extremely knowledgeable who really cares! Update on my dad, dr Hwang suggested a procedure so my dad never has to be on blood thinners again because he has Afib and it was successful! I will forever be grateful for this man! I rarely write reviews but read them all the time. My hope is that another family will read this review and find comfort and peace knowing they or and their family members are in the best care under Dr. Brian Hwang and his team. I am in the medical field and have access to a lot of wonderful doctors where I live but we were on vacation when my son fractured his C5 and 6 with a spinal cord damage. We feel very blessed to have crossed paths with Dr Hwang. First and foremost his knowledge and wisdom with his injury were great. His precision during surgery even if it took longer was comforting and his beside manner was like no other surgeon I have ever met. He never let us give up hope even while he had to be realistic. We are only a month out of my son’s surgery and see improvements everyday! My son continues to have the most positive attitude and I fully believe this stems from Dr Hwang setting the tone from the beginning. Dr. Hwang told us it was an honor to help my son but it was our honor to have him as a surgeon.

Dr. Hwang is an incredible physician. He is kind, empathetic, and generously giving of his time (not to mention his very impressive résumé.) My mom had severe head pain and Dr. Hwang was her last and only option to get relief. Dr. Hwang and his staff worked diligently to get my mom approved, through her insurance company, for the occipital nerve stimulator trial to see if it would assist her with pain relief. The outpatient trial surgery was scheduled expeditiously. In pre op Dr. Hwang explained everything to my mom and I in regards to the procedure, post op expectations, and how we would proceed if it was a success. Dr. Hwang and his staff are available whenever you have a question or concern and Dr. Hwang actually cares how his patients are doing. The trial procedure was a success and my mom has since had the permanent occipital nerve stimulator surgically implanted. My mom was at a breaking point prior to the surgery due to the severe pain she was living with on a daily basis, and the occipital nerve stimulator has given her a new lease on life. As soon as the stimulator was turned on postoperatively her pain was decreased by 80% and her entire demeanor changed. We will forever be grateful and indebted to Dr. Hwang for his care, compassion, and the ability to change peoples lives overnight in a positive direction.

Dr. Brian Hwang has been an absolute god send for me. I have been dealing with chronic migraines and trigeminal neuralgia for years. I have never had surgery before or even stayed in a hospital, but Dr. Hwang made me feel so comfortable and has taken away my pain. I am forever grateful for him and his team. Dr. Hwang has by far been the best doctor I have ever met! I’ve lived in and out of hospitals all my life with my mom’s RA condition and over 12 surgeries and not a single doctor has had the kindness and patience like Dr. Hwang has. Dr. Hwang is very thorough with his surgery plans and with any complications if they were to arise. He is very friendly and makes you feel so comfortable and calm. He follows up during your hospital’s stay unlike other doctors who do the surgery and never come around to check up on your post-op recovery while hospitalized. He sits in the room with you to answer all of your questions or concerns. He also has a webpage he took the time to create for every post-op care instructions. My Husband and I 100% recommend this Neurosurgeon! My husband had a Laminectomy done and did run with some of the complications Dr. Hwang had mentioned given my husband’s condition but Dr. Hwang had already prepped me with they way he would handle things if they were ever to arise and came out to the waiting room to explain and let us know of the successful outcome with my husband’s surgery. Not many doctors I’ve dealt with explain in detail the surgery walkthrough. I’m very honored to have met this Doctor and I Thank you for your Service!

Wonderful experience with Dr Hwang. My 80 y/o father had pinched nerve in his back and could not get a moment of comfort. The nerve was causing severe pain in his lower back and would radiate down his left leg, all the way down to his left foot. Dr Hwang didn’t just go in and out like a routine surgery. This great doctor, who I genuinely believe deeply cares for his patient, considered my father age, his physical capabilities, his plans, and what my father wanted to accomplish with the surgery. I’m not an educated man and none to bright. But Dr Hwang explained the options, the procedures, the risks, and outcomes. And I fully understood how he explained it.Surgery was done in 3 hours. Recovered for 2 hours and my father was home the following day! Incredible.Thank you very much Dr Hwang.

He explained in terms that were completely understandable to me and my family regarding my physical condition and what he proposed and recommended for me. I required neurosurgery on my back. After the surgery was successfully performed, he immediately shared the results with me and my family and conducted daily follow up visits when I was in the hospital. I met Dr. Hwang in the emergency room of Mission Hospital where he told me my sister had a massive brain bleed requiring life saving surgery, and due to her severe condition, she would likely never be the same. His calm, direct, and compassionate way made me confident she was in good hands. Dr. Hwang performed a craniectomy to relieve the intracranial pressure, stop the arterial bleed, and evacuate the accumulated blood. Thankfully, Dr. Hwang saved her life, then explained to family with empathy the many unknowns ahead. The very next morning and to everyone’s surprise, she was awakened and immediately began communicating and moving all extremities on command. The entire staff was happily amazed. Dr. Hwang continued to check-in on her condition in ICU with genuine care. When Dr. Hwang saw my sister again 3 weeks after surgery, he humbly admitted it was a “miracle” that she survived and can talk and laugh and was so personable with her. Then he continued to check-in with me on her progress and provided vital justification to her insurance for the most appropriate rehabilitation, which accelerated her progress immensely. Although Dr. Hwang did not speculate on how my sister beat all odds, I truly believe one reason was he went into surgery and did his very best knowing her odds of survival were very low. Dr. Hwang is undoubtedly one of the very best among his peers, but just as importantly, he has empathy, dedication to heal, and patient connectivity. Dr. Hwang has not forgotten where he has been and desires to make a difference with every patient and their loved ones. I am so grateful Dr. Hwang was the neurosurgeon in the ER on the day we needed the best.

I cannot express the gratitude I have for Dr. Hwang. My husband was airlifted to trauma after a Mountain eBike accident where he suffered head trauma, cervical fracture, fracture of base of skull, fracture of temporal bone, cervical spine injury, rib fracture, among other things. Dr hwang saved my husbands life. He was so professional and honest from the moment I met him and learned of his injuries. He performed a high risk surgery that had a very successful outcome. It is predicted that not only will my husband walk again, but he will be able to move his neck. This is all because of Dr.Hwang high surgical skill. I cannot recommend him enough and would beg to have him as my surgical Dr. If any future problems arose. Just last Friday Dr. Brian Hwang and his team performed emergency brain surgery on my brother. If he hadnt, my brother would not be here with us recovering quickly and improving every day. The decision for surgery had to be made quickly and Dr. Hwangs compassionate and caring manners made a difficult decision seem like the right one and only one. We did not feel pressured and he very thoroughly walked us through the process. He is a highly skilled surgeon, and my husband had a great result. Dr. Hwang contacted me every day after the surgery to see how my husband was feeling, until we knew that everything was good. He checked every CT Scan immediately and called or visited to explain the results. The nurses at the hospital were always able to talk to him immediately to answer any questions, and they all had high praise for him. I am also able to easily contact him and get an immediate reply to any concerns. Dr. Hwang is an extremely caring person and talented surgeon. Needing emergency surgery is very scary, but Dr. Hwang made it much less stressful. It’s almost unbelievable how wonderful he is. We will never forget him.

Dr. Brian Hwang is an extremely skilled neurosurgeon and also a kind, compassionate doctor. I was referred to Dr. Hwang for a nerve stimulator for occipital neuralgia—(which gave me constant, intense headaches). Dr. Hwang told me he had embedded nerve stimulators many times in various parts of the human anatomy but I would be his first for occipital neuralgia. He contacted another doctor with experience with this procedure and actually went and observed the other doctor perform the surgery. Dr. Hwang insisted I go see this doctor for a second opinion and to see if I would like the doctor with more experience to do my procedure. I went to get a second opinion and liked the doctor. I just had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hwang this weekend in the unfortunate scenario I needed emergency back/spinal surgery at Mission Hospital Emergency Room. Dr. Hwang provides emergency support to the local hospitals in addition to his full time practice in his off time. After nearly 4 months of failed treatments and options from multiple other doctors I was finally given relief from debilitating pain. Dr. Hwang consulting me on all options, performed the surgery, made visits to the hospital to see me and follow up in person and has continued to check in on me to monitor me progress and recovery. Eight weeks ago Doctor Hwang consulted on my case at Mission Hospital. I had an accident that resulted in a burst fracture of my T12 vertebrae. He was instrumental in diagnosing the kind of fracture and recommending the correct procedure to alleviate my pain and rebuild my vertebrae. He came to check on me at the hospital like a friend rather than a physician. Hes incredibly kind and compassionate with people. My father had a serious brain injury. As we took him to the ER, his health declined and we were told by the healthcare professionals that it could go either way. Our family was in disarray. As we held onto hope and prayer, Dr. Hwang approached us and gently guided us through what could happen. He took the time to speak with the family and jumped into surgery. Post surgically, he checked in on my father and our family consistently. Dr. Hwang epitomizes kindness and brilliance. My father-in-law was literally on the bring of life and death, and Dr. Hwang worked his magic to save him from a serious subdural hematoma, which had shift his brain significantly. Not only is he an exceptional surgeon but also very caring. His bedside manner is in the upper echelon. I work with many physicians in my profession and he is definitely in a league of his own. The kindness he showed to us during a moment of great panic and anxiety was exceptionally humane. He helped set exceptations of what may or may not come to pass but did so with great care. Dr. Brian Hwang is by far the best neurosurgeon I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and being treated by. As an athlete my entire life, with disc issues since my late teens, I’m no stranger to neurosurgeons. Most of them have huge egos, never actually get to know you, and just want to get you right into surgery. Dr. Hwang is the opposite. It was very clear the first time I met him that he cares about his patients and will only do what is in THEIR best interest.In late October, I started to develop what I thought was shoulder pain. Olympic Weightlifting is rough on the body, training 2-3 hours, 4-5 days per week - I didn’t think anything of it. So I ignored it, until it became unbearable. My pain tolerance is higher than most, so when December came and I couldn’t sleep more than 1-2 hours at a time, I was in pain 24/7, and I started losing feeling and strength in my left arm, I agreed to an MRI.The results indicated a very large, disc extrusion in my neck and unfortunately I ended up in a different surgeon’s office. I was told I was going to end up paralyzed unless I had surgery immediately. No other options.I came to Dr. Hwang for a second opinion, and I am beyond grateful I did. He spent the time going over every splice of my MRI with me, we talked about what my options were, WITHOUT surgery. We came up with a treatment plan together, doctor and patient, that made sense for a patient in their 30’s who is active in sports and did NOT want surgery.That was in December, and it’s now February and I am back to about 85% and getting better everyday. When I walked into Dr. Hwang’s office, I couldn’t lift my left arm above my waist, or carry a water bottle without losing my grip. Now I’m getting back to my regularly scheduled lifting, even putting barbells over my head again. Physical therapy and time DO WORK.Dr. Hwang listened to me, he watched videos of me lifting, he had a clear understanding of what I wanted and what I didn’t want. Surgeons like to cut, it’s what they are trained to do. But Dr. Hwang is by far better than anyone I’ve ever met, because he knows when not to cut.

I met Dr. Brian Hwang after he performed emergency back fusion surgery on October 31, 2022. This doctor (man) is amazing not only is he the best Neurosurgeon he is a very compassionate doctor (and Army Veteran) and is really interested in your healthy recovery. He spent an amazing amount of time to explain to me, my wife and our daughter the issues with my back and how to recover from the injury and surgery. I have seen so many different doctors and specialists this year, and he is by far the most original, knowledgeable, caring not only doctor but human being. He is so honest and just real with you. He is truly empathetic and you can feel his care and true wish for good intent for you and your health situation, whatever it may be. He has been working with me to try and figure out what is best for me. There is very open communication he offers and is always there for you. I also have to mention his marvelous PA Mr. Tayler Franco. Tayler is such a proficient, knowledgeable and compassionate person. He is very quick to respond to any questions you might have. He like Dr.Hwang really and genuinely care about you and I don’t know how to explain it, but you can just feel that he is authentic and real!
