What a nice course 😀Like the condition of the course, tee boxes/fairways/greens all perfect; like the design and landscape, especially the trees, though I hit the trees almost every hole ⛳.........Some up and down hills, but pretty friendly to all levels of golfers.Some of the holes have the view to the sea, take a deep breath when you see it, itll just smooth out of your long week.

We had a great round at Black Horse! The pricing was reasonable, pace of play was great (3.5 hours for our round), the course conditions were great (nice being able to get on the green in regulation for several holes). The only negative is the driving range seems oddly positioned at the very rear of the course, somewhat far from hole 1. Staff was friendly, the egg mcmuffin sandwich was delish and the ocean/Monterey Bay views were really nice. There is a good amount of construction around the course for new homes which did not bother us but something to be aware of. We will definitely play here again!

This course is in absolutely perfect condition and has beautiful views. A must play in the area. I even took advantage of a free club demo on the range and Jake dialed in a new driver shaft for me. Food was great and well.

Great course, I shot my best round of the Pebble Trip here at Bayonet.Was a close to 5 hour round with no Marshalls in sight, and a pretty big gap two groups ahead of us!Restaurant wasnt bad, great prices and TVs to watch the masters on.

Did you know that the green fees can vary? I was here yesterday and they said fees change daily like the airlines. I went online and it was much cheaper than calling or going in person. Who knew golf fees could be adjusted in addition to twilight hour fees. Beautiful day yesterday!.

We had breakfast before our tee time. The egg sandwich had no imagination; toasted bread, scrambled egg and bacon. Wow, howd they think of this? My friend had the breakfast burrito and said it was very good, full of flavor.COFFEE: The coffee was full of flavor which was good as it covered up that the water wasnt filtered and the coffee pot was old. My friend said the coffee (water) tasted like a fish tank. Good description for our aquarium. We pay a lot for food and coffee. Youd hope the restaurant would recognize this and get their act together.

Awesome golf course with a first class event space for weddings and similar parties. We played the black course, which was scenic but challenging, with fast greens and tight fairways. On a clear day youll have views of the Pacific and Monterey Bay. We saw a few deer walking around on the course too. The following day, we had a large party for a quiceañera in the event space, and it was catered by the facility. The food was very good, with friendly service and a full service bar. The outside patio was perfect for hanging out and enjoying the cool ocean breezes. A fantastic experience overall, on both days!

Ive been hearing about Bayonet and Blackhorse for decades, and today I finally gave it a go. Boy did, it meet the hype.I played BlackHorse today. A wonderful track with a good mix of long and short par 4s, great par 3s, and genuinely challenging par 5s. The views were divine but more impressively the condition of the course was excellent. California had recently received one of its largest rain totals in decades in the past few weeks but I barely saw any evidence of that. A huge compliment to the supers and all the staff that were delightful.I cant wait to come back and play Bayonet! Keep it up the great work everyone!

I’ve been a member here for 15 years and seen many changes. The course staff and management have done a phenomenal job in upgrading the playing surfaces, and elevating the general experience. Simply put they’re good people. I’ve held an annual three day event *every year* since 2010 and it keeps getting better. Include both on your list of must plays in Monterey.

A great day on the Monterey Peninsula. Can be pricy but there are deals out there. Nice fairways and typical MP courses with tiny greens. Play in the morning if you can for less wind but bring your cold weather gear and camera. Been playing here since it was a military course and I still love it. Good food and drinks at the shop and nice staff too. Put this on your list!

I did leave my 60 deg. Lefty Cleveland RTX wedge on the 18th hole and called the club house when I found out. Im still optimistic someone will turn it in since it would be easily found. Bad karama if you find it and decide to keep it.If anyone came across it when I was there in June 24 2023 to celebrate my birthday please reply. Thank you!Great and tough course. Two great public courses in Monterey county that are reasonably priced. We played at Black Horse today and it is by far my favorite of the four courses we have played in the past week.Hilly course with a fair amount of trees. Undulating greens made the course challenging as they were sometimes hard to read, but that is what also made it fun. The course is not on the water, however there are beautiful views of Monterey Bay from many of the holes.Staff was friendly and attentive whether they were in the pro shop, the course or the restaurant. The restaurant has a great menu, food was even better and the views were amazing.Cant wait to come back.

I have been playing at Bayonet and Black Horse for a few months now and I would say that these 2 course present many challenges and opportunities for a good round of golf.Bayonet and Black Horse are the #2 best golf courses to play in all of Northern California that are public courses.The price to play a round of golf is about $80/golfer for either course. In the area there is Pebble Beach and Spyglass which you will be paying $500-$2,000 for. They have golf club rentals, practice range balls are $5 and are Taylormade Distance balls and you can take lessons from any of their 6 professionals.The golf course is located in Fort Ord Army Reserve Base off the exit of Lightfighter open to the public and doesnt not require a military ID to enter.The clubhouse staff is friendly and approaching for any questions you have about the golf courses.The clubhouse restaurant is absolutely amazing and the food is delicious.If you want to play a fun, challenging round of golf on these inexpensive, beautiful golf courses. Wish I had taken photos of the food! BIG portions…. Sandwiches are massive enough for 2 men. My grilled chicken and spinach salad was so tasty and BIG. I could only eat half. Does golfing expend this much energy? I was there for a meeting so no clue! Will definitely go again since this is a public PGA course and the food was quality with great prices.

Bayonet course was one of the best I have been too! Beautiful scenery great greens well worth the money. Middle of the week was great no one in front of us or behind us so we got to play at a comfortable pace. I would recommend it to everyone!!!

Played Blackhorse for the first time. I really enjoyed this tough but fair course. Lots of fairway bunkers and fast greens were a fun challenge. The holes go up and down a series of hills that have picturesque views of the Monterey Bay. We also came early to have lunch in the restaurant and were quite pleased with our meal. Great fries to go with my French dip sandwich. My son enjoyed his sweet potato fries with a Ruben sandwich. Food was hot and fresh and I would definitely recommend this place for lunch before you play a round

Nothing special. The kitchen cant follow menu construction. If I had a choice between In-n-Out & this place, for food I would choose In-N-Out. However, the scenery overlooking Monterey Bay is awesome. 3 stars for the scenery.

Had a GolfNow deal with a cart and practice balls for the driving range. This was a golfers heaven. Very good conditions and challenging layout and greens. It was a Tuesday morning and the pace was great. Plus some holes have a nice view over the Monterey bay.

The Easter Brunch 2024 was terrible, the food was outside and everything was cold. The service was bad, not enough staff. For the money we paid I expected a lot more. Will not be attending another Easter Brunch there unless they step up their service with hot food and more staff, very disappointed.

Blackhorse is in absolutely terrible condition. The fairways have dirt and barely any grass. I like the layout and it’s a good course for $70 but I think there is a lot to improve. When I was out there, they were saying they are working on a new irrigation plan

Ridiculously mid. Pretty views but nothing compared to other courses. Whole place was an absolute mess, course repair, and house construction so there’s machinery moving everywhere. Muddy and dead fairways especially on the back 9, bumpy, cracked and uprooted cart paths. Really disappointing… lured in with the pictures on the website, totally got catfished by a public golf course. So bad I left wondering why people play here at all. Only thing this place has going for it realistically is the high difficulty level if that’s your thing, narrow fair ways and lots of technical shots were cool. They are obviously trying to liken themselves to the del monte forest courses and they are just so clearly not there. On a more personal note, absolutely did not appreciate the visit from the course warden that came out and attempted usher us on and teach me how to play halfway through the back 9. I was having an off day and not shooting my best, as does happen. But did not need an old timer to come out and condescendingly provide unsolicited swing advice, as if we would play better by having a random dude observing us. Then he stuck with us for like 3 holes. Never had that happen before, really weird experience. Will not be coming back.

This is just the most beautiful place to have a wedding at sunset. So,my friend and I, crashed it. And congratulated Mr and Mrs Grimmly on the coronation of their vows and how moving The ceremony WAS. The place was decorated so beautifully and with great detail. Beautiful view of the Bay, disappointing food. Menu is outdated and bloated. Bayonet burger was under seasoned and dry, sweet potato fries were burnt, and French dip was comparable to one of those microwave sandwiches purchased from costco. If there is a chef present in the kitchen, they should find a job in tax preparation.

I played Black Horse, which is not my favorite of the two, but its still in amazing shape. The remodel years ago has matured nicely. They were building some homes along the inner of the course, so there is active construction, but it didnt affect course conditions except for one hole where the tee box is moved up 100 yards. Staff is friendly and great views of the ocean from the top.

Price to View ratio is hard to beat! Had a beautiful reception for my uncles burial. The staff were courteous and kind and the event room had a gorgeous view of the golf course and coastline of Seaside. I bought 4 MacCallen 12 year whiskeys with 4 beers and the bill was only $50!

I always love golfing here. You get the quality of the high end courses of the area but without the price tag. The facilities are top tier for both the driving range and short game areas. I’ve found the staff always friendly and helpful. The two courses are really well maintained in every way. Great condition and challenging, but fair. The fairways are tight so accuracy pays dividends. The greens are just the right speed but do have some undulations that make for some interesting putts. Overall, it’s a great setup and both courses are a lot of fun.

Overall, a spectacular place to play, especially being in our backyard, living within 20-30 minutes to play. My brothers and I played Black horse today 6/10/23.Our experience was a very poor one.1) Make sure you pack some food if youre playing 18 holes. There is no service out on this golf.2) The beverage cart never showed.3) Black horse course at the 9th hole turn, doesnt come close to the club house, to grab some food.Feels like youre away from everything.4) I wish the pro shop would have given us the heads-up on this course, with construction uproar happening.5) final arrived back from playing 18 holes, which was fun, a bit challenging.Ready for lunch, gone into the restaurant to only to find out, there is a wedding event and no room to sit and have lunch.My opinion is, its not a very well managed course.There is a lot of room for improvements.I wish them all the bestKeith, Kevin, and Dan

Bayonet is an excellent public golf course. The fairways and greens are in perfect condition and it’s a challenging course! Some of the holes also have a beautiful view of the Ocean and Monterey bay as well. One of my favorites in the Monterey area. Will be back to play many times again for sure.. and the green fees are also reasonable, especially via GolfNow. Highly recommended!

Played the bayonet course at 730 on a Sunday and had a great experience. Staff was great and brought a cart out to my car before even checking in. Updated carts with yardage, charger USB, and Bluetooth. Course was in great condition and was able t ok get a round in a little under 4 hours. A lot more fun than I had a year ago, and definitely would go back. Black Horse course looks a little under construction, but didnt play it so cant say for sure.

Im a member of pebble beach but my partner wanted to try something new, the prices are very cheap and the service is outstanding. The bev cart girl with purple hair was so kind and very attentive. Whilst visiting Monterey on a golf trip with my buddies, I booked a two hour short game lesson with Mike Spiller. Ive had massive difficulties with bunkers for years and was at my wits end. Mike assessed what I was doing, gave me some adjustments to fundamentals and I made more progress in that two hours than I had in twenty years of playing. Next day at Pebble Beach I went in probably nine bunkers and got out first time every time.Not only a great pro but also a great individual.The practice facilities were excellent and whilst practicing a little on the course I also witnessed a great course. So, if you want to improve your game, give Mike a call!

I’ve played Bayonet and Blackhorse about every other year over the last 30 years. Just went back and played a few rounds. The courses are in the best condition they have been in since the remodel in 2007. Fairways and greens are in great shape. The courses are as challenging as ever. There is construction around the course, but doesn’t really affect play.

The course was absolutely amazing. One of the coolest courses I’ve played. We were booked for 18 holes and after we had played 11, a maintenance guy came down and started accusing us for already playing 18 and then playing more. We were less than 2 hours into our round so this was impossible. We told him we hadn’t and he continued do cuss us out and call us liars. This was super uncalled for and it was clear that this guy just wanted us to leave so he could go home. He threatened to tow our carts to make us leave right then. We were the last on the course and he continued to pester us the rest of our round. It was ridiculous and super uncalled for. This man single handedly ruined our experience at the course. Everyone else was super nice and friendly.

I left three emails, and several voicemails to the head pro to express our extreme frustration and disappointment on the level of service at Bayonet, but no response. My friends, and I drove an hour and a half to play both courses. Every year we take the drive down to Monterey to enjoy a day at Bayonet, but not this time. We spent a lot of money for the green fees, food, and drinks for a horrible experience. Can someone respond to me? Have not played here for 5 or 6 years. Use to love it. No more. In terrible shape. Fairways hard with blotchy grass mixed in with dirt. Many dirt spots visible in fairways. Greens so hard they are almost unplayable. Many of my shots hit middle of green and rolled off by 20 feet. Greens look like they have been painted and also had a lot of dirt spots on them. Gave it 3 stars because of layout and some nice views. Don’t waste your money. Go play Pacific Grove instead.

Celebrated my parents Golden Anniversary in one of the banquet rooms. The event was spectacular and memorable from reserving the room with Jeff to saying goodbye to our guests. Jeff was very professional and accommodating, answered all of our questions and quick to reply to our emails. The food and set up was great. Our servers Jimmy and Alexis were very pleasant and took great care of us. Thank you for a great venue to hold my parents special day!

A course (Blackhorse) in transition . New ownership and the hiring of Troon means changes are underway. I feel like we were 1 year early. New grass grow in, turf being taken out of play, construction of houses, inconsistent bunker conditions all scream a course in transition. I hope the next time I’m in the area, I can see the results. IMO, not currently worth the $200 green fee.

Overall, it was a great experience except the check-in process. The clerk who checked me in seemed to be quite annoyed when I asked about the location of the practice ranges, the included practice balls and how to get the cart as a first time player here. He was not professional at all and it was only him who made my experience not positive and think twice to play here again. Except the clerk at the club house, everyone else in the course was kind, professional and very helpful. The course was in a great shape.

Great layouts on both courses, but it seems like theyve pretty much lost interest with the upkeep. I played Black H the other day, and the greens have a bunch of blemishes and dirt clods on them. The fairways were patchy and looked like more of a dog track than a good course. The practice green is a complete joke, and the bunkers have grass growing in them. Send like theyre pinching pennies and letting the place go before they build the Grand Hyatt.

Fantastic courses that are very well maintained. Ive played both Black Horse and Bayonet courses and they are both very fun and quite challenging. Both courses have very nice greens that are challenging and fun. These are two of the best golf courses in the bay area. There is also a restaurant on site that has very good food. The staff at the golf course and the restaurant are very friendly and do a great job. I highly recommend the courses and if you just want to have lunch I highly recommend the restaurant as well.

Played Bayonet for the first time and loved it. I like it much more than Blackhorse but both are very good and just a matter of personal preference. Its more traditional, lined with Cypress tress on every hole. Reminds me very much of what Harding Park looked like on tv for the PGA. It wasnt nearly as tight and penal off the tee as I imagined. Just a tough, but fair test. No hazards and little out of bounds. Youre not going to lose golf balls out here. Very tough walk. Lots of uphill trekking. Yes, homes are being built between holes, which is a shame, as it takes some of the being in nature out of it, but the layout is still fantastic. This facility is great, but seems to have so much potential to have excellent conditions, that arent being realized. I played the Black Horse same time of year, last year, and the fairways had the same issues. Lots of different grasses, very patchy, and you almost have to just know going in that you may have to roll your ball in the fairways sometimes to get a fair lie. At $69 to walk with a pull cart, at 7:30am on a weekday, playing in 3 hours as a single, this is an unbelievable deal. I really, really like this place. I would add to rotation for every Monterey trip, just know that its not on the same level, condition-wise, as the big boys in the area. Very good service, and only course of the 5 we played in the area, that had beverage service on the course (and we paid twice as much as other courses). Id rather have a great golf course than great service, but just an interesting point. Really good vibe at Bayonet/Blackhorse. I will be back.

I love coming here! I will say it isnt to golf. All the golfing adventures Ive been on can be counted on one hand. This place is great for the sunset views off the patio looking out to the bay. Absolutely gorgeous! It only received a 4-star instead of 5-star review because the food and drink selection of draft beer is limited. And food is only served in the evenings on Friday. Otherwise, its a great place to relax after a long work week...and pay golf too I guess!

Played Black Horse, and it was fantastic! Greens were really fast and course was in great condition. Make sure to ask which practice greens to use as I was told after my warm up that the lower greens were more accurate to Black Horse. I played Saturday, July 9th, 2022. The overall course condition was really bad shape. So many of missing spot on the green as well as fairway. All of bunker has not much sand either.This course used to be top shape but not anymore.Worst thing was that I saw new constructions are coming between the course that will change this courses atmosphere.

Played Bayonet on a Saturday. The staff was awesome and friendly, from the cart guys to the pro shop. Golf was great. Course was playing well. Tough but we’ll maintained. The only downfall from this course, the locals or members that play there. They looked and treated us non locals like we were trash. From the range to the putting green. We were looked at like aliens. We aren’t hackers, we’re legitimate golfers but were looked at like trash. Like I said previously, the course and staff were awesome, the locals and members were the downfall. I’d definitely play there again. It would just be nice to ego check the other non-professional golfers.

We played Black horse. The course is shorter, but the terrain is tricky and the Greens very unforgiving. It was my buddys bachelor party and I dont do Booze and Strippers, so we settled on a nice round of golf and lunch, which we enjoyed on the patio at the course. The food is great, too!

I played Black Horse this morning. A very fun and forgiving course until you get to the green. The greens are fast with challenging breaks and hills.I played with a buddy and we were the first ones off the tee. Nice demanding golf courses. Black Horse has tricky greens and Bayonet is longer. Need to keep in the fairways on both, long grass in the rough. Food is standard Golf Course Pub like fare with Burgers, sandwiches, and fries, and they also serve breakfast. I have never tried the breakfast but go there often for lunch and have been to their holiday brunch meals. The lunch is good but not the best Ive ever had however the price and the quiet atmosphere is well worth it all. Beautiful views of the Monterey Bay outdoor seating.

36 holes of challenging golf here. Both courses were renovated not to long ago. With Bayonet, they took a very good course and made it a great one. All of the trees have been limbed up, and are no longer such problematic ball-eaters. The old course had two really funky holes, 11 and 12. These were dramatically improved during the renovation. Two thumbs up! Black Horse, on the other hand is now a bland, sort of links-style course with some rather silly greens. Huge humps and bumps. Some of them are almost unputtable. Skip Black Horse and play Bayonet!

I played black horse, Great golf course, it is incredibly challenging with SO many bunkers. Stay out of those and you should be able to keep your scores down. I played from the blue, and wow do they like long par 3s at black horse! The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the ncga rate is great! We traveled to play here from the military base we are stationed at near Las Vegas. When we made our tee time, we were told there is a military discount for active duty and retirees. Upon arriving we were told that in order to be eligible for the military discount, we had to live within 50 miles. This is not was said over the phone. This was such a disappointment that a “once” military course doesn’t except all military members and their claim to support the troops is a lie. I do not recommend supporting this course if you are connected to active duty troops since they have a stipulation. This shows low morals and disrespect.

This is so far my favorite golf course. It is the toughest course I have played. Every hole has drastic elevation changes from the tee box to the green. The greens are fast and not a one is flat. Very challenging course.

I loved the course, but I am rating my overall experience as a 2 due to the service. I will not go into the details, but when we arrived, the gentleman in the pro shop was very patronizing and not at all accommodating. Both my daughter and I were offended by the way he was talking down to us. In addition, I wanted to buy a long sleeved golf shirt but they have next to nothing for women, while having a very large selection for men. We rented a driver for my petite daughter who was in from out of town, only to find after a few holes when she wasnt hitting her usual 220 yard drives, that we had been given a mans club. When we finished and got back to the pro shop I complained about paying to rent a driver and being given one that was clearly unsuitable, and he made no apologies and just said do you want a womens club now? Since he saw me returning the cart, I know he knew we were done. Instead of being a smart ass, he should have given me a refund. In addition, on one of the holes someone was on the green spraying water on it and he would not move so we could hit the ball. I yelled four several times. I finally walked over to some of the other workers and asked them the protocol on this course and why he was standing on the green while we were trying to hit, and I was told he was not supposed to do that and one of them had to go over there and get him to move. He stepped off the green a few feet and stood there waiting on us and made us uncomfortable. I cant believe any of this behavior that we experienced would have occurred if we were men. I will not be back because of it. I am an attorney and a good golfer and I will not go somewhere where women are treated disrespectfully. By the way, this is the first review I have written for anything.

Traveled almost 6 hours to play at this course, only to be let down. The course looked beautiful, challenging and the gentlemen that gave my buddy and I a short intro was very nice. However prior to arriving, I had made a tee time in which military discount was discussed and naturally the price was adjusted. However when I went to conduct a recon, that’s when the conflict started. I was never informed about the “50 mile radius”, nor is it defined/explained on their site, therefore this was news to me. We were then told that the DoD put this policy in place back in 1990s, which makes 0 sense. So basically they want to tell the story about the military history behind the course but don’t want to FULLY honor the military???? I’m a tad bit confused. So while they want to broadcast false advertisement that they “honor” active and retired military personnel, they do not. I must say I was rather disappointed to hear the lame, OUTDATED policy explained to me. BLUF either the policy needs to be relooked at and revamped or just take the advertised military away. I really hope that someone who can make the change or just even address the issue steps up and does something. Either take it away entirely, honor active and retired or active duty only. The fact that only military personnel that live within 50 mi of this course benefit from this, is so conflicting. I would love to know what what the retired military population within 50 mi is. It’s like saying us as Soldiers will only fight and defend the east coast, that’s absolutely retarded. All I’m saying is that the “military discount” advertisement needs to be relooked at.

Can work around ragged fairways but there is no credible way to deal with the wretched conditions on many of the greens. Now a pricey cow pasture, with new houses thrown in. Got to play Blackhorse and Bayonet GC on successive weekends in October. The weather was phenomenal and conditions were perfect. The two courses are similar in terms of elevation changes and distances from the tee boxes, but that’s where the similarities end. Bayonet is more traditional, with its tight tree lined fairways and well placed bunkers, especially on the par 5’s. The greens are also traditional in size and have subtle undulatation. Definitely need to place your ball below the hole on the uphill approach shots on both courses. Blackhorse is more links like, with a few trees but more fairway bunkers compared to Baynoet. The green complexes are very undulated and I found them to roll faster than Bayonet. Knowing the exact location of the pin or playing with a greens guide on Blackhorse would definitely help you with landing the ball on the correct part of the slope or ridge. Both courses are fun and difficult. I can’t imagine how challenging this course would be to play when it’s either windy, cold, or both. Customer service is fine and there is a very good practice facility to warm up prior to play. There is a shuttle that can take you down the hill to the practice area. Cheers.

Really good golf courses. I think Bayonet is a little overrated but Black Horse is totally a fantastic layout and the more challenging course. Very underrated and Id play that all day long.

Beautiful course. I dont play golf. My visit was for the Italiano concourse car show during car week. It is a well maintained site with beautiful trees and facilities.

Challenging course on both sides. Tee boxes on Blackhorse need some care. Good place to play to see what you are made of. I think its the most difficult course in Monterey area.

Food was ok, consistency in ordering for a large group felt like we has to ask our server for multiple things. The view is really what is worth it about this place, plenty of parking and the staff were nice.

We played several courses in Monterrey Peninsula and is convinced that Black Horse is one of the best golf outing for the money. Course condition, people and even the golf carts are 5 star category. We rank the course over Pebble, Spanish Bay, Poppy Hill (before closing down for upgrade) and Del Monte.

Made a 2 p.m. tee time two weeks in advance on the bayonet course, we paid walked up to the starter and he told us playing on the bayonet course wasnt going to happen they had a tournament going on since the morning and he still had 3 groups to push through! White downhill we were never told there was going to be a tournament that day otherwise I never should have let us make a tee time on the bayonet course, so they were packing everybody else in on black horse, pretty much felt like they just wanted the money didnt care about customer service at all, so we played the black horse course the greens were nice other than the ridiculous undulations seemed like every hole Fairways had several different types of grass growing on them overall was a horrible experience, too many good courses to play on the Monterey Peninsula to waste your time going there

Both Bayonet and Blackhorse are great courses. The views of the Monterey Bay only add to the experience. Bayonet is the tougher of the two ( narrow fairways & much longer) Blackhorse has some fun holes but the layout is not quite as memorable as Bayonet. Course conditions have always been great. Fast greens will dispose of bad shots quickly. Bring your A-game to these courses. One of my favorite places to play!

Horrible food. okay service. good views. Went with a group of friends and we waited 30 mins before anyone came and when they did they were nice but got our whole order wrong and then when the right plates came out the food was absolutely terrible.Maybe the kitchen was having a bad day, but we will not be back.

Love the courses and friendly golf pro shop but the restaurant staff are not helpful and doesnt acknowledge you for 15 minutes. I waited and waited, went to the bathroom and still no help until pro shop guy showed up and went to the kitchen to get the waitresses.
