Nova Scotia biking trip . Excellent service, food and cycling. 11 guests, 3 guides. Guests were mid-40s to early 70s. Half used E-bikes (which were great.) Plenty of options for routes and distances that fit the person and the weather. Nice hotels, fantastic private dining experiences, plenty of snacks. Guides were attentive to details, customer service and fun.

Great bike touring company. Had a wonderful time cycling from Prague to Vienna. I’m 47 and I was the youngest person on the trip and one of only 3 singles. Most people were over 60 and used e-bikes. Ideally more people would have been on regular bikes and in my age group. Not much Backroads can do about that but it is something to be aware of when considering booking with them.

UPDATE: Added two stars because I had a very comprehensive and thoughtful conversation with Erika at BR, in which she said she took notes.Nice to be heard.Good to know there was followup discussion with guides from my trip to clear up communications so tour will be the best for everyone here on out. This was a new tour so I believe some of the issues may have been the kinks were still being worked out.Would still recommend BR for seasoned hikers who have the right equipment.SUGGESTIONS to BR hikers based on complaints below1. Get printouts of trail of the day while also using the BR app and possibly another back up hiking app2. Buck up for good lightweight gear and then take the essentials with you everyday-including rain gear. Also train for these hikes if you are even a little hesitant about your fitness or ability3. Be extra aware of possessions and follow up with staff repeatedly if necessary, especially concerning situations where you need their helpBONUS if only doing morning hike confirm before leaving with guide EXACTLY where you will be dropped off AND where the hotel is located_____________________________________________________________While some parts were amazing- that was due to winery lunches and tour guides from local venues, not Backroads.BE AWARE BR guides will not actually guide you, they expect you to follow their app. Which may not always load or function well in remote locations. Got lost twice because of it, happened to others on the tour as well.Three main complaints1. Mis rated trails were actually much harder than stated. Others on tour called it the “torture trail”. A few falls took place Was rated the easiest of hikes 1-3. Other repeat BR hikers said really was a 2-42. Guide promised he would have ponchos available on the hike so I specifically left mine behind to lighten the load. When approached during a downpour for a poncho, the guide laughed, said “it was in the van”.3. Boots stolen from resort that BR lined up. None of the guides acknowledged it or offered to help communicate with the winery.BONUS COMPLAINTHad planned to only do the first morning hikes. Guides made this seem like an imposition. Had me dropped off with no real help or direction to get to new places.

Travelers BEWARE: I went on 3 tours with Backroads. And for each tour paid 000’s in travel insurance. Because of emergent illness we needed to exercise insurance for 3rd trip (unable to cycle, unable to join activities-meals). Insurance would not help. Backroads did not care. Very disappointed. Horrible experience and never to be trusted.

I just visited the Backroads site to see if there were reviews demonstrating an improvement in the client experience with this tour company. I traveled once to Costa Rica with them and it was an amazing trip! Later, I booked a trip to South Africa and had the same experience as a previous reviewer had booking to Patagonia. Backroads cancelled the trip and I already had airfare and pre/post travel in place. When I spoke to them about it I was treated discourteously and was presented with a cross-sell to another trip on another continent. I had already paid in full and I was refunded the money, and was offered a very modest credit to a trip with them in the future--not worth the resulting expense and hassle. I ended up having to create a custom trip on short lead time with another company. Now Id like to go to Patagonia, but I am wary of their cancellation protocol, and given the a recent review, I am inclined to select another tour company.

Just returned from my fourth Backroads trip, a bike trip to Burgundy. My compliments to the company for delivering consistently great experiences. We rode through beautiful countryside, past famous vineyards and historic chateaus. Our accommodations were deluxe, and the food was wonderful. Our guides were knowledgeable, and professional.

My experience with backroads has been very disappointing. After having several people tell me how fantastic they are, my girlfriend and I took the plunge and booked a trip to Patagonia through them. After receiving our confirmation, we booked non refundable flights down to Argentina. So far so good, right? Not so fast. 2 months later, we get an email saying the trip is cancelled. Their accommodation was to offer us either the same trip on different dates which dont work for us (non refundable flights and also due to other other engagements) or to offer us a nominal discount on a more expensive trip leaving on the same dates. To add insult to injury, no one will call me back to help resolve this. Going forward, we will be booking with other operators and strongly advise you to do the same. Proceed with caution!!!Please let me know who I should be asking for or provide an extension where I can reach youUpdate: the situation has been resolved to everyones satisfaction, thank you!

My parents-in-law booked a tour, but right before the tour, my mother-in-law tested positive covid, she has a serious lung issue that doctor does not suggest her to travel, we are calling to discuss alternative plan to make up over $10,000 trip expense, but the company agency has no flexibility since they do not buy travel insurance. They seems not care about the health condition of the customers, we will keep following up and hope there is a solution.

This was my second trip with Backroads.I completed the Taste of the Camino hiking tour in October 2023. My trip was exceptional. I loved our itinerary, where we stayed, and the ability to select a daily pace that suited me. Our trip leaders were amazing people in their own right and performed their jobs flawlessly.I just got a thank you back from their “Guest Focus Coordinator” and I have to say, I am very impressed with her note. Quite detailed, it captured my feedback exactly and it notes how the company is addressing two incredibly small things that I wish were different. I mean small. i.e. A dining room that was loud because, well, it’s in a CASTLE and sound bounces off stone. Every restaurant in DC is loud so this is nothing new. But they asked so I answered and their response assured me they would take my feedback and see how they could improve the experience. Whether they can make a change to a place they don’t even own is not the point. The point is that they do something with the feedback they’re given. That’s unusual. Mostly people ask just to ask, in my experience. The fact they will internalize this is what makes them special, even when it’s ridiculously menial.I’m telling this because it is how I know this company is truly exceptional. They design amazing trips, hire overqualified people who are smart, funny, nice, accommodating and resourceful. They ask for feedback and actually act on it.They are def not the cheapest but they are worth every penny imo. I would book with them again and again, as long as my body can fulfill what my mind says I can do and what their trips have to offer.I’m very positively impressed by them and how they run their company. It makes me think about how I can replicate their practices in my own company.They try very hard to give each person an amazing experience and they deliver. Hands down.

In a prior review, I shared my experiences with our coordinator, who was not good at communicating. BR blamed this on the pandemic and other employee related issues. I sent two more E-mails and even left a voice mail for our coordinator - who remained consistent and ignored my messages. I was told by others I our group they had experienced the same treatment.The tour was “Ok”. The group was wonderful and the guides did the best with what they were given. It was obvious the guides are poorly supported and the bicycles are marginally maintained.The food was remarkably forgettable. The hotels were nice, but the food was endlessly repetitious. Little variety unless you want to eat sea bass four out of five nights - though it did add a few choice wisecracks at dinner. The watermelon was great.The route was not totally safe in my opinion. Fair amount of fast moving traffic in countries that do not have a lot of bike lanes and the lanes that are available are very uneven. We had one person take a spill that ended her trip. One member got lost. Most of us had at least one close call with either traffic or gravel. The hills were challenging and the scenery beautiful. Just need to keep a close eye on the roads and trafficOur guides has significant experience with the visited countries. They knew what they were doing and though there were a few communication hiccups the ladies did a great job. The had little support and they are rushed from one tour to the next. We had two of the thread become I’ll and on the last day a small group of us were on our own - No big deal. The back office simply does not the resources and IMHO that all stems from the front office -whom I have the originating complaint with. The guides are the only reason they get two stars.Bikes were not ready and my wife might have been injured if she were not an athlete. Everything is rushed from one tour to the next.

Very disappointed. We were getting ready for our Nova Scotia ride when my wife suffered a heart attack four weeks before the tour was to start. Her doctor said she absolutely could not ride for at least a few months. We called Backroads and asked if we could get a refund—No, since it was less than a month before the start of the tour. We understood. And we didn’t have insurance—a mistake on our part. But could we reschedule when my wife is fully recovered? No, we were told by Backroads. Tough luck. Our $7000 is now theirs. We’re still hoping for resolution to this because we really want to go, but in the meantime, we’re wondering, Is this really a good way to run a business?

Its good for upscale tours. If you are looking for a real bicycle touring experience this wont cut it.Pampered is great but you cant transform yourself like that. Also most employees are not the adventure guide type. They are upscale and thats ok. Also disappointed in your refund policy for sick and dying humans . Shame

We just finished our 4th Backroads biking trip and continue to be blown away. We loved all of them but this one was somehow even better. The scenery, quality of the biking, the introduction to the local culture and the extraordinary leaders seemed better than ever. And what other things in our world in 2022 are “better than ever”? I dare say very few. Backroads gave us a life-changing vacation and at the same time gave us back our optimism. THAT is a vacation. Just knowing that we as human beings are producing people as knowledgeable, fun, thoughtful and professional as our Backroads guides gives us hope. Thank you, Backroads.

Posting my Backroads experience from summer 2022 as there wasn’t many reviews and hope this will help future decisions (and I now know why; the target age group does not use Google for reviews). I wouldn’t recommend for young single people in their 30s like myself. When I heard there were other solo travelers I was excited but the entirety of the group is over 50 years old; half were well past social security age. Those who have done Backroads before noted this is the average age. The target audience to me seems to be wealthy east coast / Florida folks who are retired or close to being retired and aren’t shy about sharing how many homes they have.I did the Burgundy tour though French wine country. Unfortunately it was neither cycling nor wine intensive; neither were the guests. For a trip branded with a focus on wine, they were very low in terms of wineries and wines included. A total of one winery with $20 bottles, a château with no tasting, and one wine store in Beaune for tastings. And, no wine is included for dinners, which was mind boggling for me.In terms of riding…most days we only did one of the two published trips due to heat. The group, as they were much older, used e-bikes. There were two serious cyclers who did their own thing. So if you’re worried about being a good cycler before coming, as I was, there’s no need to worry. We usually finished around 4pm each day, and we’re dropped off at the accommodations; 3 hours on site before dinner at the hotel. The accommodations were nice but retailed at $300-500 a night. The meals were at Michelin starred establishments; because we were a group the menu was heavily modified for scale.Days start at 8:30am and dinners are around 7pm so your day is wrapped up by 9pm when the light is still out. This makes sense for the likely target age group of seniors. I definitely wish there was a published detailed agenda (times, number of winery stops) before I paid over $1k per day for this 5.5 day experience.Overall, I would not recommend to someone in my 30s age group looking for a bike ride through French wine country. It’s very pricey for what you get. If you fall into the 50++ group, this would be a fine experience and there are many repeat customers.

Canadian Rockies “walking” and hiking tour has virtually no less difficult options. This trip was a complete disappointment. Pack your own sandwich and water and hike straight up a mountain each day for 5-6 hours. No culture but of course beautiful scenery. Very difficult hikes even for a physically fit 59 year old. Impossible to reach the company it took a month to get ahold of someone to complain.

Where to begin? We have now taken two Back Roads trips…and there will almost certainly be more. To say we weren’t the ideal candidates for Back Roads would be an understatement. We like to travel at our own pace and organize our own activities, and we’re not much for group travel beyond our family and close friends. But Back Roads has changed all that - at least for certain destinations. To say this company is well run would be an understatement. The level of commitment to your enjoyment of a particular place is unparalleled, and they don’t just want you to enjoy it, they want you to experience it. After two trips we have really come to appreciate the fact that the the Back Roads itinerary is usually made up of things that we might have experienced on our own, as well as things that we never would have done on a trip we planned ourselves. But the real magic of Back Roads is in their trip leader recruitment process. Whoever runs this part of the company deserves a major shout out because their their leaders are smart, charming, personable, and most of all, extremely qualified. They make the management of diverse needs of a large group appear effortless (which it obviously isn’t). Because the trip is so well run, the group dynamic is excellent and we’ve now had two trips with strangers where we enjoyed the social experience a great deal. It all adds up to a fantastic experience that you should consider strongly if they run a trip to the place you want to travel to. We just finished their big island trip in Hawaii, and had two fabulous leaders named Max and Mitra. The leaders on our trip to Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park and the North rim of the Grand Canyon had equally excellent leaders but I can remember their names. They’re two for two with us and we’re not easily sold on an alternative approach to travel. If you don’t think you’ll enjoy an organized trip like this with people you don’t know, all I can say is try it! It’s a very unique and pleasant way to travel to certain places, and Back Roads is doing it at the top of their game. Highly recommend!!!

We had a much less than desirable experience on a Backroads Costa Rica tour. We were forced to leave the excursion only after 2 days due to one of the other guests contracting Covid. Despite CDC guidelines stating that anyone exposed should wear masks for 10 days and be tested on day 5, neither of these protocols were followed. We were told mask wearing was still optional and that no testing would be performed, despite being told incorrectly on multiple occasions that CDC protocols were being followed. Upon return home, our phone calls and a customer review requesting a call from Backroads were not returned. This was not a premium experience despite the premium price. I would consider another provider such as VBT. We travel internationally 3 times a year and found our experience very disappointing.

This is my first ever review of a company and I turn 39 on Thursday. My dad died on his way to his 1st of 4 cycling trips around Europe this summer. He left behind 10 young grandkids, and 3 children devastated, me included. Backroads employees and managment have said they will refund some 11% of the trips he paid for because he didn’t buy insurance. One would have to imagine some of the 34,000$ would have spent along the way for his accommodations ect. They even asked if someone from our immediate family would like to take his place less that 24 hours after he died in Europe. Talk about cold hearted. My mission to to write daily reviews of the conduct I witnessed. We don’t care about the money. Given he was the kindnest person any of us ever met it seems right to me to make sure people know who they are buying from. Thanks for reading this through if you made it here, just close your eyes and imagine what that feels like.

After multiple emails I recently sent were not responded to, I called them again today, and was toldwell, in fact your trip was cancelled, and no, we did not call to notify you of such.We have already spent an exorbitant amount of money on airfare and hotels for our party of 8 people, as well as rearranged all our summer plans to accommodate this trip.I have requested that a company supervisor call me immediately to find a suitable substitution but they have not returned my call.

What kind of travel/tour company doesnt know gas station etiquette? Took up half the pumps of my towns busiest gas station for half an hour even after they were done getting gas. Trip leaders were excellent. Accommodated everyones hiking interests. Rated a 4 due to the food at the Red Cliffs Lodge. Breakfast buffet was good, however, the Cowboy BBQ should have been better. The side dishes were something I could have made and I am not a great chef. The rooms in both the Red Cliff Lodge and Hodoo Hilton were Excell.

This was our third Backroads trip. It was a 10 day bike trip on the south island of New Zealand. Amazing! Very well organized! Great guides! All the details are carefully taken care of! Even when the unexpected happened (an earthquake!), our guides had a bus replace the train trip that was cancelled (due to damage to the railroad tracks) and it was done quickly. I would recommend Backroads to all my active friends :)

This a dishonest company! Do not book a trip with them. I requested a cancellation well over 75 days from our trip due to a medical emergency (foot injury and emergency surgery). Backroads did not process the request (despite multiple calls and emails) until we were 60 days out from trip which doubled the cancellation penalty from 30% to 60%. Then they offered us 40% penalty still 10% more than their cancellation policy allows. Very dishonest people!Update....they have now backtracked and say they will honor the 60+ day cancel penalty. They made NO concession for my medical emergency which included crippling foot surgery. A little better but still NOT fair!

Ive never been on a tour but I want people to know how hard the team works and prepares behind the scenes. Im in Victoria BC and Julien, Deb and Francis work really long hours prepping for these tours. They store the bikes and equipment in our facility. They are very respectful. I can only assume that all the prep work pays off on the tour. They are nice social people, who are always smiling. If I was to try a bike tour? I would try one hosted by Backroads.

Ive taken two Backroads camping trips with my teenage son. Its our summer bonding time and has proved to be a better experience than I could have imagined. Highly recommended. Everything is done for you except riding the bikes! Weve been to the San Juan Islands and Yellowstone/Tetons. This year, hopefully Alaska!

In all honesty, I havent used Backroads, though live in an area where they operate regularly. They tend to hog resources (like campsites/picnic areas) and skim off tourist dollars from the local economy. If you are traveling to a specific location you should really use local guide services. Backroads groups tend to really standout and are usually pretty dorky. Go local. Be cool.

Just a friendly heads up to those who plan to be part of this company. If you are invited to a hiring event and are from out of town, rest assure that there is no travel reimbursement at all. Be aware of your surroundings and how you speak with others because you are constantly being watched. if you have the following skills, as was shared with me by their US Leader Development Coordinator: Judgement as being sharp, resourceful, socially intelligent, and teachable. Teamwork as being communicative, dependable and flexible. Outward focus as outgoing, approachable, and a warm and organic conversationalist who makes guests feel inspired. Than you are in!I personally felt that this company can broaden their perspective by increasing their Diversity with in their staff members. This company has a certain Mold that not all of us can fit into and it saddens me that we live in 2018 yet Diversity and Inclusion are still a large factor not adapted well by many companies.

Just finished a week in Puglia with Backroads. This is our 5th bike trip, three with Backroads, two with B&R. The trip was flawless, good routing, good hotels, great food and excellent guides- Paulo, Amanda, and Ksenia. Interesting part of Italy- 10 guests, including us, all of which were fun, bright, and affable.The difference in guide quality and organization is enormous- B&R costs more and is run by amateurs. Well never use them again.

I have never used this company, this is more of a driving complaint. Saw their van and trailer with bicycles on the roof in Yellowstone yesterday, July 3rd and standing in the curve of the road were two men waving their arms frantically to stop us as we came by. We immediatly thought something must be wrong and stopped and rolled down the window. Then, they stopped traffic on the other side of the curve so that their van and trailer could make an illegal u-turn in the middle of the road. Meanwhile, one of the busiest weeks of the year for Yellowstone, and they have caused a major backup so they can whip a uee. Just unprofessional and not a good reason to flag people down in Yellowstone. They should truly train their drivers better and teach them to not do this. There was a parking lot just past this, they could have easily used that or simply waited for traffic to clear and made the u-turn when there werent any other cars coming.

I have done about 6 BR trips. And I have to say they have all been enjoyable. The guides are amazing all from varied backgrounds and experiences. When we do the family adventures my kids hang out with the other kids and it allows me to have grown up time. Before BR vacations I was doing the items as home- finding the hotels, figuring out the excursions and restaurants.So nice to not have to do that. Plus, they find experiences/restaurants I would have NOT found on my own.You would think after 6 experiences I would run into one guide that wasn’t helpful or friendly. I have to say I haven’t. This is actually surprising because everyone can have a bad day. If the guides have a bad day, they hide it well.I save for BR trips because they are worth every penny.

Informally and without any kind of consideration, they rented us an apartment for the instructors during the summer season, from May to October on Mondays, they send us the dates, we do not rent it for other clients, and the first day that we have everything ready they do not appear and they only tell us that they no longer come, that everything is missing, that is not done, now what do I do, who do I ask for responsibility? Of course, in an email address I indicate the company

Have met Backroads several times in Fjærland, Norway. High standards for bcs guides, as well as local guides they use in Norway. Awesome bunch
