Awesome park with a lot of amazing desert and mountain scenery! Love the trails, and flower blooms. Great metal art along the freeway as well. Would definitely recommend visiting, especially during super bloom! It can get a bit crowded, but well worth it.

Stunning! Visited in the first week of April. Saw the flowers in Henderson canyon though most of the verbena were being chewed up by the caterpillars. But the cactii were starting to bloom. We were there only for a day and did not have a 4wd so couldnt see a lot of it but whatever we could was beautiful. I wanted to see desert lilies and saw so many! Ive not seen so many different types of wildflowers and this place was full of them. Ill definitely visit again to see the sights that I missed this time with more time and a better vehicle. Oasis hike was also great.

During our visit in January weekend this place was pretty crowded, long line to pay for park pass. The information line was better. The ranger that helped us was very knowledgeable and friendly. He told us there was a stargazing event that night and told us when to go and where to go. Unfortunately that night wasn’t a clear night so didn’t see much stars.

Amazing place to visit in the weekend. Almost like going back in time living in a western movie. Had an old western town to visit. Lots of trails to see and walk, watch out for snakes though. Great curves going down and up hold if you like curve roads or ride motorcycles. But great for the family to go and visit. And if you stay at night, up will see all the constellations in the sky due to the area being a dark night society with no lights.

Wonderful Visitor Center not to be missed! Highlight is the short video showing the varied fauna and flora during the deserts four seasons. Many displays for young and old alike and a MUST SEE when you are visiting the area. Beautiful collection of desert plants. Such a scenic area! Allow at least an hour to take everything in. They have ADA restrooms and entrances, as well. Dont forget this is a CA State Park area so youll need to pre-pay at the self-service kiosks and place your ticket on your dash. Plenty of large parking areas for RVs with toads, too!

The visitor center was really well staffed, clean and the gift shop was very reasonably priced. They had presentations at set times during the day which was really lovely to hear about (Though we didnt quite arrive at the right time to see one ourselves due to wanting to leave early for the trail). The shop had maps, guides to local insects and other local fauna/flora, hats/shirts and other trinkets.We stopped by here to ask for some recommendations of the nearby trails that had good wildlife and a place to see the wildflowers. Palm canyon was one that was recommended and it did not disappoint in the slightest!All in all, lovely visit made especially memorable thanks to the very knowledgeable and friendly workers.

My wife and I had a great experience here, we saw the beauty of Gods creation. We couldnt go out hiking to where more flowers were blooming because the park Ranger stated the weathers temperature was too high for people to do any hiking. But we got matching tee shirts with the parks logo on them and 2 bumper stickers that showed the beautiful scenery. We drove just a little over 100 miles. Definitely next year were going to plan a early trip out there again and also going to the lake thats not far from there. I recommend for those to go out and experience what our world has in natural beauty.

This place was interesting. They have random metal animal art throughout the desert. We had zero reception from our internet provider so it was hard to get around the park without a GPS. Wildflowers were nice to look at when found. Theres a nice visitor center where you must pay to get in to the park. You need to use the Yodel app to pay. Restrooms available at the center. Nice views from here.

One of our favorite state parks. We I’ve hiking here and coming out to this unique desert. Home to one of our favorite plants the ocatillo. Such an amazing and magical place. The quietness and the energy pulsate in their own unique way that’s a feeling you have to experience. Great hiking destination and great day trip in SoCal.

Great spot to start your desert trip. The museum was extremely well laid out and informative, great for people of all ages. The paths outside with markers labeling much of the plant life we subsequently saw was a nice touch. The blooming desert was spectacular!

Visited after (and during) rains and snows. This is the best time to visit Sonoran and Mojavian ( HOT) deserts. Usually in 60s and 70s, although it can get quite cold, like this time. Also when youre most likely to see flowers and leaves on trees and bushes. The rest of the year, everything looks dead. They have a great underground visitor center with lots of displays, a botanical garden, maps and very helpful rangers. They know whats blooming and where and which roads are impassable. If you are staying in Borrego Springs, it is very easy to stop in every morning before heading out.

Stopped here on the way through the desert and decided to go on a hike. Visitors center recommended the Slots and the Palm Canyon trail. The Palm canyon trail was pretty awesome to see all the Palms at the Oasis. Almost all of the trees in the canyon were uprooted during a heavy rain and some of the others due to fire. It was a little unexpected to see so many of them at the end of the trail. The trail is out in the open during the beginning so best to go early morning during the summer.The Slots were pretty neat as well and we did them later in the afternoon as the high canyon walls give a bit of shade during the day. Some of the trail is a little tight and can be a bit of a squeeze. The wind coming through the slots was awesome as it was over 100 degrees. There are also many wind caves towards the end of the trail that look like beehives from the distance.Overall it was such a great experience we decided to rent a campground and stay the night to look at the stars. Campground was clean and had clean showers and bathrooms. I will definitely go back here when looking for a place to camp on the West Coast.

Amazing place to visit during the spring season. Came here March 25th for a day trip too see the desert flowers bloom. Was met with an array of colors of desert blooms with purple, yellow and white flowers. It’s a good idea to take plenty of water and snacks. The visiting center is a good place to visit to get information on local blooms and eatery’s near by.

We enjoyed the area. We hiked the slot canyon and drive around on the driving tour. We stopped at Tamerisk campground for a quick picnic lunch. Stopped at the visitors center and watched a short film walked around their grounds. Drove out to see wildflowers. They had a large map at the visitors center to show where they were blooming. We also looked around and saw the sculptures.

One has to be there to truely experience the majestic mountains, and sound of the oasis at Palm Canyon Trail. If lucky, one can encounter residents of the desert.It is a beautiful place to visit, hike, and occasionally hear the howling of coyotes.Best seasons to come: fall, winter, and spring.We hike the Palm Canyon Trail and visited the oasis in the desert. The palm trees were burned in a 2020 fire and have a remarkable recovery in less than 2 years.

I really don’t understand requiring the $10 day pass to park here. Don’t get me wrong it’s a beautiful little area but we spent less than 30 minutes here before continuing on. The staff is nice. I picked up a free map with some helpful info and purchased a souvenir.

Went on a Friday before a Holiday weekend and it was fine....there were people but not a lot. There is NO cell signal. All statues are easy to find if you just drive around. The Dragon and Scorpion look great.

One of the prettiest visitor center in the whole US! Its international dark site member!When you park, you see the restroom structure but follow the footsteps and walk down to find the visitor center.The staff were very helpful.

This park was a great getaway from the San Diego traffic. All the park rangers were very friendly and helpful and provided great advice for hiking. The facilities were well maintained and provided plenty of parking and places the relax. The hiking trails were very rocky though and can be confusing at times. I recommend bringing extra water if youre not very active and sunblock if youre delicate towards the sun. During the day this place can get very hot, so be careful. Later in the afternoon this place can get it little shady after the sun tucks away behind the mountains and in my opinion this is some of the best time to hike the trails. If your quiet enough on the hike, you might even see the local mountain goats. This place is also great for camping. The bathrooms had both hot and cold water and all the restrooms were also well kept.

Saw big horn sheep on the springs walk. Couldnt find anything else. Map at visitor center was useless. Directions from ranger very vague to slot canyon. We never found it. Visitor center was very nice. If you take the 79 from Temecula all the way to Julian its worth the drive through Anzo

This place is beautiful in the winter months. Not hot but it does get pretty cold. March/April is the best time to see the mega bloom of wild flowers, especially if we received a lot of rain like we did this year. You do have to pay if you park near the visitor center but there are decent restrooms. Highly recommend for families. Remember to bring a gallon of water, a hat, light clothing and sunblock if you visit during the hot months, this place is a desert after all.

This was a very helpful and interesting visitor center with regular tours offers by the local volunteers and paid staff. All were their to serve and provide useful information that made our trip more enjoyable. Precise directions to wold flowers and super blooms with realistic description so a to not over inflate our expectations. Still a very good experience all around for our short visit.

Very busy after 10 am. Seems like you have to come here and park to get a park pass just to drive to other places in the park. This parking area gets insanely busy, so go first thing. Cute gift shop and nature trail. Can walk to the campground and canyon hike from here.

We camped Rock House Rd. Dry camping. Beautiful but super windy. Tons of desert flowers blooming. Lots of bugs but they left us alone. Went to the visitors center. Highly recommend to do this and they help you plan out your adventures with maps and knowledge. We did the first slot canyon and the sculptures. Amazing place.

The visitor center was nice and the wild flower bloom was fantastic. But the park itself was poorly maintained. Even the most popular trails were poorly marked, without even rudimentary markers. Its actually dangerous, as if you get lost out there you can be in real trouble. We felt the park overall was an embarrassment to California. Were likely to stick to national parks in the future. We were so exvited to visit there, but ended up disappointed overall.

Definitely a good place for first-timers to check out, with lots of information about Anza Borrego such as maps of the park, books, and museum-like displays. They have a little theater that shows a 10 minute film about the park. Theres also a nice selection of park merchandise for sale.There are restrooms next to the parking lot, but I didnt see any for the public inside the visitors center building.

Great state park 🏞 overall. CA state parks are some of the countrys best and the rangers are of another class. Friendly, informative, and always eager to help. Definitely a must go for thr hikers you will have plenty of choices.In case, if you are not a hiker and just wanted to spend some time in the town, visit the visotor center to get the map to locate the big statues as it may be helpful to track as its not easy to get on online map. You can have couple of good selfies there. Aldo, there are offroad tracks for the adventure seekers.

I came here with my wife and child in March to experience the super bloom (a period of about a month in late winter where all the flowers bloom), and was not disappointed. The super bloom season is their busiest, and naturally the traffic within three miles of the park was atrocious. Surprisingly, and despite the combined population of San Diego descending upon the park, parking at the visitors center was easy and quick. I think we spent more time in line at the bathroom than we did trying to park. The grounds around the visitors center were well kept and withstood the masses of people quite well. The facilities were clean in spite of the rediculous amount of people. There was something to see or read about every thirty feet in every direction around the visitors center and parking lot. The visitors center itself was fantastic to check out, architecturally interesting and full of information about the desert. Rangers and volunteers had loads of additional information and activities present for all the people that were visiting, everyone had something to do! I have been to the park since the super bloom and even without billions of flowers the park itself is hauntingly beautiful. The campgrounds were well maintained, quiet, and spacious. Each National Park is special and has its own special something, and Anza-Borrego is no different. Interactions with the environment, wildlife or plant life, is rare here compared to other parks (Im not suggesting you dance with bears in Yellowstone), and is all the more special for it. I think Anza-Borrego is special for its quiet, understated majesty. It is such a large park, with so much land to take in, it can become easy to get lost in the spectacle of how alive this place really is.

This is a wonderful state park with so much to see and do. The visitors center is smaller but has a lot to see and plenty of hands on stuff for kids and adults. The rangers are a wealth of information and the guided tours are worth the time. It does get hot in the summer but it’s still Ana amazing place, you just have to prepare with lots of water, head covering, and sun screen. It’s full of life all year round.

What a beautiful park!!!! I drove down to deliver a cake and decided to cruise around after. Its very hot and there are liiiiiimited gas stations so just youre aware. I was told the season ends May 1st because of the heat, when I went this weekend it looked like the desert blumes were about to happen so I got a sneak peak of it. The iron sculptures are all around boreggo springs the dinosaurs you have to go a lil off roading not 4xd but be careful. Majority of trails have signs for foot path or drive requirements. I had a great solo trip!

We are camping during peak flowering of the desert, so there are no developed campsites available. But what Anza-Borrego State Park has, that other parks do not have, is free dispersed camping anywhere in the park. There are several large flat areas within 6-10 miles of the town of Borrego Springs that will accommodate a hundred campers, tents, and RVs. There are many smaller areas throughout the large park to pull off and camp for free. The main campground charges $10.00 to empty waste tanks and fill the water tank or large containers if youre tent camping. So even though this is a very popular park near several urban areas, there is room for everybody. That being said, we went into town today to get bread and milk and to walk the Visitor Center trail, and we were horrified by the traffic and number of people who have come to see the flowering areas near the visitors center. We came right back to our quiet spot in the desert to wait out the weekend mobs.You wont get bored doing the same walk, as there are trails to keep you walking for a lifetime. All levels of ability with many easy 1-2 hour hikes, and longer trails with dramatic views for the fit and ambitious.There is great respect for the desert environment, despite its heavy patronage; campers are considerate and clean, and the town is visitor-friendly. There are 2 adequate grocery markets, and some interesting shops. The city park at Christmas Circle has a mind-boggling dense, green carpet of grass and clover, (Im from Vermont, and this green took my breath away), rest rooms, and little cafe picnic tables. Parking spaces for big vehicles are everywhere. Its the finest combination of Californias natural beauty, and thoughtful planning by the State Parks Department.P.S. 4G and 3-4 bars (Verizon) in town and in the large camping areas east of town.

We found this gem while exploring Anza-Borrego in the scorching heat. This place is well maintained. The staff were extremely friendly and informative. My kids had a wonderful time working on the scavenger hunt and exploring in the Discovery Lab. A place you must visit if you have children.

Desert state park is a great place if you want to chill in those mai. Resprts and eat at the ceteral market or if you wish to drive a lot.But the only way to explore it all is by a dirt car like jeep or ram using which you can go in muddy roads since the place is all about off road experience.Talking about visitor center, you will get most amazing people here, who are ready to help..Heat is pretty high, be careful and get the ryt attire.

Cool park with great desert and mountain scenery. In the right season, there are some unusual birds and wildflowers. If you can, take some of the back roads (4WD recommended) too remote locations and hike around a bit. P.S. The main campground is top notch, plus you can camp just about anywhere, if you follow some basic rules.

Favorite park...if you love the desert and hiking this is the place. The visitor center has lots of information about the park and the staff are very helpful with any questions you may have. Weekends can be crazy with off road vehicles and people so I suggest a weekday if possible. Check out The Slot for a hike, Fonts Point for a view and if possible the wind and mud caves.

I visited the center when I camped at Borrego Palm Canyon Campground. The visiter center is built underground. There are several displays of fossils and a 3D map of Borrego Springs. Those are fun to look at. They also offer a free award-winning movie describing animals and Anza Borrego desert. Of course there is a little gift shop in the visitor center where you can purchase cool T shirts, books, and water bottles with Anza Borrego Desert logos. The staffs there are also friendly. A great place to visit.

All I can say is... Wow, this place is gorgeous. What you see differs depending on what time of year you go, but overall I enjoyed the hiking here. It wasnt very crowded like other parks, which is an added plus. Although Im sure it depends on the trails you choose. I was here for a day visit, but Id love to come back and actually camp here someday!

Madness during mega bloom. Too much traffic. No parking! So many people disrupting the peace. Lots of non-outdoorsy people ruining the beauty. Otherwise the other times I came here no traffic, barely any people. Amazing. Lots to see. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat.

Hadn’t been back in over twenty years but didn’t fail to amaze. The visitor center packs a lot of great stuff in a small space. The Ghost Mountain movie was interesting but not as detailed about the dessert as I would have preferred.Went on the Slot hike (southern) which was a snug fit with a baby on my back. Also recommend removing your watch as I smashed my the touch screen on mine.Went half way to the Palm Canyon grove looking for sheep. Spotted a pair up the hill a ways and headed back as it was reaching dusk at 4pm in early winter.Make sure to keep your parking ticket and use it at the different lots including to get into the Palm Canyon camping area for day use.

Great place to view wildflowers but also and expansive park with some good hikes. The visitor center had good information about hiking and the wild flowers in specific areas. If its chilly and overcast in the other nearby state park you are almost guaranteed warmer weather and sunshine in this park. Can stop in Borrego for lunch or dinner after your hike!

Anza-Borrego is Californias largest state park. The camping amenities were great, they had really clean toilets, great interpretive signage, a great visitor center and amazing hikes! My only regret is not staying here longer to go on more hikes.

Small but well designed and developed. Store has a good selection of guides and specialty books related to the local geology, animals and desert plants. Nature trail that starts here is very interesting and informative.

Visited Anza-Borrego this past March for the wildflower SuperBloom. Lots of rain on the West side of the mountain (coming from Julian) but beautiful sunshine on the desert side.Lots of beautiful wildflowers! Especially off Henderson Canyon road.Worth the trip!

First time returning to A-B desert since 1964.Visitor Center is nice, well-appointed and has a great short film with an overview of the park. Staff are courteous and helpful.The small botanical garden has many native plants, with plaques for each, with their names and Latin classifications.Great way to learn about the park quickly, prior to a day of hiking.Pro-tip: come in the winter, like we did, and avoid the summer blast-furnace.

What a beautiful facility staffed but knowledgeable volunteers! Loved the short nature trail with signage for all the native plants. They have 5 short films one can request to see in their comfortable little theater that were very informative. Over a few weeks time spent in the park, we visited enough to see each film. It’s also a great starting point for several hikes in the area with a large clean restroom, water fountains and shaded picnic tables.

Winter in the desert is magical. This park has good eats in Borrego and in Mecca. It has great art, such as the Galleta Meadows sculptures. And, during springtime, this park is highly decorated by blooming plants. Good hiking, camping, and off-roading opportunities are everywhere in this park. Sadly, dogs cannot go very many places with you here.

Anza Borrego is a must visit if you love geographical meccas. Every day and night is a new perspective of a most beautiful desert. The sun casts and the evening hues spotlight so many different forms of terra. The star-filled skies are as dense as the pieces of sand on a beach. While I could not live under this temperate region, a visit is always a welcome part of any visit to Southern California. If you go, tread lightly, and leave it in better condition than you found it.

Wonderful area for walking/hiking taking pictures. Desert mountains surround this gem in the desert. Located about 1hr 40mins from San Diego Anza-Borrego visitor center is the epicenter of this vast state park.There is a small museum with a orientational and historic films, a paid parking lot($10,$9 for seniors), restrooms and many easy trails in the area. Note: bring sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water. This is a desert and or does get hot.

Very helpful staff at the rangers welcome station. A large range of hikes. This time we food the slot. Easy yet fun 2 mi hike loop. Well marked once on trail but easy to miss the entrance first time. About a mile or so of dirt road before you park. Enjoy!!

The drive on Montezuma Valley Road to get to the visitor center was amazing! We were lucky to see the desert in full bloom when we arrived. The visitor center had paths through different native plants and cacti. Also, there were clean bathrooms.

Visited here during a winter raining day and it was snowing/raining in the desert. It’s amazing to see a green desert for sure. I drove around S78 and S22 for about 2hours. There were a lot of overlook for the view. Some parts of the road might be narrow and there were a lot of RV/trailers. Make sure to slow down at every turn to make sure the incoming traffic sees you.

This is the best state park in the California system and the services at the visitors’ center are one of the great things about it. You can walk in and anyone at the counter will provide you with options based on how far you want to go, how many days you have, what kind of vehicle you have, how far you want to walk, etc. and then provide you with a variety of options. I’ve been to other desert parks where attendants can seem discouraging or judgmental, but these folks seem to really love the park and want you to experience it, too. Today, for instance, Rick was particularly helpful. AB packs a lot of variety into such a small area.

Drove out here from San Diego; took 2 hours there and 3 hours back due to darkness on the steep, winding mountain roads.The park visitor center is easy to find/get to. Facilities were all very clean and the nearby area has picnic tables. A few trails can be reached from here, including a paved handicapped-accessible one that connects parking area to bathrooms to visitor center.Many good views, informative placards, and at least a few areas with shade. Unfortunately, the actual indoor part of center was closed due to covid-19. Everything looked recently built or upgraded.Good to know: park usage fee is $10/day/vehicle (self pay to get ticket to display on dash). Area and parking says 7am to 7pm but might change with the season. Also, as I stated, the actual indoor part of the visitor center was closed; call beforehand to verify if that is something you plan to see).Lastly, this is a desert area and its no joke. Plan to bring three times the amount of water you think youll need. Hat recommended, sunscreen is a must. Warm clothes if youre staying until dusk or later or driving through mountains.Check my other post (soon to be posted) for info on the giant metal dinosaurs and animals just a few miles southeast.

I camped here for two nights in April. Great campsite’s, very clean and right on the edge of the desert. Very nice sidewalk path that leads to the visitor center from the campsite’s and take in the desert experience. Very hot from May through September as you would expect in the desert. Also can be very windy so practice setting up your tent before you come if you’re new to this.

I loved the planted area around the State Park. Solo day trip on a Sunday during spring break. Tons of people. Loved all the flowers blooming. Saw a roadrunner. Plenty of butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. The Center was very informative. They showed on a map how to drive to the flowers. Very easy drive. Minutes from center. It’s about high 80 degrees. Bring lots water and pack a lunch. Pay for parking at center. No cell service. Highly recommend!

We found this place looking through Google. My husband and kids wanted to go out on a little road trip close but out of the city. He told me of a place called borrego Springs there was nor alot of pictures on Google, and we packed up and left . The drive here was put on this world beautiful long roads where you think am I going the right way and just over the mountain you get this amazing sunset with amazing statues . My kids loved it here . There are not a lot of places to dine if you get picky eaters, so bring snacks and enjoy the drive .

Parked at Visitors Center. Lots of info on trails and wildflowers. Large bottled water $2! Went hiking on Camp Ground trail and Palm Canyon trail and Panoramic Over Look trail - a little rocky and steep but nice views. Beautiful spring day 75 and sunny after several rainy days but not muddy at all and not dusty. Spring is definitely a good time to visit. Nice display of wildflowers but not what Id call a super bloom. Just park along the side of the road on DiGiorgio or Henderson Canyon road where you see other cars parked and walk out into the fields. Lots of pink and yellow flowers. No good way to get to the desert from East County. 67 through Ramona/Julian is best but still areas of twisty turny mountain roads (S22) and some rush hour traffic (67). Still worth it - beautiful scenery/views everywhere you look.

This interesting visitor center, is great for children and adults. The museum section has very nice exhibits and dinosaur bones from the area. There is also a discovery center with drawers full of interesting and educational items about the desert surroundings. A lovely gift shop with well priced keeps. Very sweet volunteers are in abundance and there is even a picture show. Outside is a trail identifying the regional foliage. It is well worth a visit and very reasonably priced.

The 4 out of 5 stars is because of the condescending attitude of one of the park volunteers who decided to lecture me about what my car is and is not capable of when I inquired about the amount of boulders present on one of the 4x4 high clearance recommend roads (I have an average clearance vehicle and wanted to know if the road had large enough boulders that high clearance was absolutely needed). This park ranger incorrectly stated that a symmetrical AWD system is a 2WD + AWD system rather than a 4WD + AWD and tried to deter me from visiting the trail. Luckily, my day job requires off road driving and familiarity with off road vehicles and so I was not deterred by this volunteers wrong information. The hike I easily made it to was amazing but this volunteer will dissuade the adventure-curious from accessing trails they are more than capable of reaching.
