Very nice atmosphere to enjoy happy hour drinks, appetizers & lunch. I ordered calamari, cauliflower, wonton & ceviche appetizers for my family & I. For lunch I ordered the salmon reuben sandwich with a side of crab mac n cheese. Awesome food, service & atmosphere!

This place was great. The service was great. The food was amazing. Fresh and plated well. The outside seating was also a great view as there were ducks in the pond. Lights at night fall were amazingly ambient.. very date night as well as group meal vibes for pictures.Its worth every dollar spent.

Ive lived in San Diego my whole life and I finally went for the first time. I thought this was a simple small cafe, its kinda tucked away but as soon as you walk in the interior decoration/architecture is so beautiful, complimented by a really nice small lake patio. The food is very delicious, everything I ordered was premium taste. The servers are very polite and are always checking on their guest. Will be coming back for sure.

I came here on the last day before flying out, I read great reviews on Google so I was excited to try it out. The service was friendly and we got our food fast. We ordered squid steak and fish and shrimp combo. Squid steak was very tasty and fresh. I would order that again. Fish and shrimp combo was okay, I prefer my seafood fresh versus hand battered. Prices were average and not too expensive for most of the items.

The atmosphere is pleasing and relaxing, with the water and nature in the background. However, I do like the outside better because the inside does have a smell of seafood, which most might not like. But, the outside is very relaxing and typically has good weather. Their food is delicious, and their customer service is always fast and good. The restaurant itself is a huge place. It is a nice place to have a good time with family. Although it is more of a seafood place, they also have a larger variety that has things other than seafood, for those who want. One thing I liked was that they messed up my daughter’s order and they fixed it, without us even saying anything to them first, which was really nice of them.

Ive been coming to Anthonys fish grottos since early 1967 when a friend of my mothers took me here shortly after I started college and San Diego / Point Loma area. I came here before one of my college dances and it was the first time I had ever had lobster. This location is the first one I ever came to although I attended to take out of town company to the one on the bay because it was right on the water. The only reason I took off one star for service was because this past time just a couple days ago, we had a very nice waitress but she never once checked back on us until it was time to bring the check. Fortunately we didnt need anything at all but if we had needed a water refill or some tartar sauce or something, she never came and asked if everything was okay or if we needed anything. Other than that, the food was delicious and the view of the little lake was beautiful. I hope this location stays here for many many more years so I can keep enjoying it.

This is one of my favorite eateries! The menu has something for every budget, every taste bud, and every food restriction! They even have a gluten-free menu. There is a fresh market inside the redtaurant entrance that sells many of the condiments, seafood items, salads, etc. This is an excellent choice for tourists and neighborhood folks alike. They offer inside and outside seating. Note: You can see the restaurant sign from Highway 8; however, the restaurant itself can not be seen from the highway. It is down in a small valley adjacent to a man-made lake. Try it! Youll like it! ✔️💯🔥✅️

I want to fish tacos in my boyfriend.Wanted steak and lobster, so we hit up Anthonys!We were greeted and seated immediately. Although this was our first visit and the decor was dated, it seemed nostalgic. It was dusk when we arrived, so dimly lit, but it was clean.There is indoor and outdoor seating as well as a bar in the restaurant, we sat inside. They sat us in a booth next to the huge windows where we could see the pond and the ducks swimming beneath the fountains & being fed by other patrons.Of course, their menu is mainly seafood, but there is quite a variety!We debated in trying the sand dabs but decided on coconut shrimp as an appetizer. It was DELICIOUS!The food came pretty quickly and was plated nicely. My boyfriend enjoyed the steak and lobster and said that it was cooked perfectly as were my fish tacos. I cant say that they were the best ive ever had, but they were pretty good. We topped off the meal with spumoni, and my partner said it was the best hes had.We decided we would try then again.

Came here for a birthday dinner and was not disappointed. I got the steamed clams and calamari for the appetizer and it was delicious! I also got the swordfish, Mediterranean style. They were slightly short staff but my waiter was absolutely incredible. I definitely will be back to try some other items. The atmosphere of the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous.

I had seen good reviews of this place, and I can confirm that based on my experience, it’s worth visiting!Even though I was on my own, I was seated quickly in a booth by the lake. The server was conscientious and friendly. I ordered the fish and chips with a side of vegetables. It came fairly quickly and tasted fresh. The green beans were not overdone and the chips were fluffy while still being crispy. The fish tasted good and on the whole was a good consistency - with just one or two spots where it was a bit firm.For dessert I ordered the key lime pie which was excellent and worth trying for sure. In terms of drinks, I just had a lemonade and my server brought me a new glass when it was nearly empty. There seemed to be an extensive wine list if that is your sort of thing.I also had some bread as a starter which was warm and fresh.Overall, I would definitely come back if I was in the area again as there are other things on the menu I would like to try.

Great restaurant. Always seen it driving in the 8 east freeway.Finally had a chance to take my dad and his friends for lunch here. Great seafood choices, great theme, and good service.Good place to bring your dog and elderly loved ones. There is a senior courtesy parking area and open air patio to bring your dogs.

One of the best hidden gems in SD east county. The ambiance is beautiful with it sitting over a beautiful pond! Service is always exceptional and our favorite seafood spot. Our favorite is the calamari, halibut, and fish sandwiches. Highly recommend!

The view was great, food was excellent and our waitress was nice and prompt. We were immediately seated at 530pm on a Thursday night. There were a lot of people here by the time we left. The crowd here was primarily middle aged and up with the exception of the creep and his escort sitting one table away. Unfortunately hearing their conversation was almost stomach turning. 😕 everything else about the restaurant was good. I had a blackberry mojito which was very strong and good. I wanted the shark but they were actually out. So I ended up getting the mamgo halibut and a baked potatoe with the seasonal veggies. The veggies were undercooked in my opinion but everything else was excellent. The keylime pie was so good as well. The total bill was over a $100 for Chinese goals but it was probably worth it

Was busy, but its mothers day weekend, so we understood. Our server was amazing and super on task with us. We had minor issues with food not coming out complete, like a shrimp trio not having everything it was supposed to have... but they corrected the issue and even went above and beyond to makeup for the issues. Definitely recommend and will come back.

The food was delicious. The waitress was very nice but she never checked back with us until it was time to give us the bill and see if we want to dessert. I dont know why because I could see two other tables nearby that she was stopping by and asking them if everything was okay and if they needed anything. Fortunately we didnt really need anything but it was noticeable that she didnt ask.

I do wish we could have had happy hour at our table, the bar was very crowded. Santi was our server. 10s all around! We had crab cakes, snapper, clams, calamari, top sirloin and shrimp, and last bust, not least a burger. We will definitely return!

This is a beautiful hidden gem in La Mesa. Ive never been here before, and Im a native San Diegan. I had a delightful 🥑 Avocado salad with Albacore Tuna ($15.50), and my friend had the appetizer Manila clams in wine sauce ($18.50). We both loved our dishes!! And the ambiance was to die for! Beautiful lake with sprouting fountains, live ducks! We loved the patio seating over looking the view! Check out the photos! Wow! Thank you, friend, for the treat!!What can I say? My favorite restaurant in La Mesa. I love to sit by the pond and relax with my family and enjoy a great meal. We have had large gatherings and small gatherings at this restaurant. It is a family staple for us from date nights to birthdays and important family events. I dont think there is a better location for atmosphere of a date night than Anthonys in La Mesa sitting Lakeside with a heater, great food. When I splurge I get steak and lobster, when I am there for a normal meal I usually get fish tacos, and soup.

La Mesa Restaurant.Ive been coming here for years and Im a huge fan of the white clam chowder, though my mother has always favored the red 😀. They have a beautiful outside dining area that borders the lake; the perfect spot to dine during the pandemic. They have a big lunch special selection, which we enjoyed along with one of their white wine flights. Very nice wine and beer menu. Their red butter is absolutely scrumptious 😍. There is limited parking by their front door, but plenty of parking on the upper level. Look for the convenient purse carabineers under the outside tables (great touch). Big, clean restrooms. Very good service. Will continue to come back!

My mother in law was in town and she enjoys Anthonys food and ambiance. Anthonys Fish Grotto is a favorite place to take our out of town guests for dinner as they have a unique dining area overlooking the small lake behind the restaurant, brings a very tropical and vacationish feel. Staff was very friendly, our Server greeted us warmly and we were enjoying our wine & craft beer in no time. Dinner was of course - seafood - and it was delicious!! The evening was so fulfilling and my mom-in- law enjoyed this as shes already thinking of coming back on her next trip to San Diego.

Wow, went to Anthonys! They have moved locations. I loved the old location, and I love the new one! They are still on water - Murray Lake! The architecture is stunning inside, and they have lovely, lovely cabanas outside, and a dining room overlooking the lake... Anthonys still represents the water, with waterfalls, and water shooting in the middle of the lake. The cabanas have lovely lighting for the evening around the cabanas, and in and out of the water. You enter a Shell, so you get the feeling you might be under water, although you arent. Cant say enough. Elegant & lovely. Food is still wonderful, and reasonably priced. Come back & see them you all!

This place is a hidden gem! I mustve driven past it a thousand times or more since Ive been living in San Diego for the past 16 years and I never knew it was there. Finding it almost feels like I got let in on a secret that I dont want to tell too many people about, but here I am, telling everyone who will stumble across this review. Going here felt like I was transported to a bygone Era. It had this mid century to 1970s ambiance and a freakin lake out back with ducks, geese and even some exotic birds! They even sell duck food for a dollar. Im coming back with my daughter! So if weather permits, definitely dine outdoors. Our fellow diners were almost exclusively made up of the retired set, which seems to be the population to which this establishment caters, which is why they have early relatively early closing hours. Because when you eat dinner at 5, who needs to be open past 8:30? LOL. But the seasoned clientele were all part of the charm for me. The service was great, our server RJ, took great care of us and even gave us the history on the joint. By the looks of it, it may have been decades since the place underwent a remodel, but thats preferred, because I think its a draw for its kitschy charm. Dont you go changing for anyone, Anthonys! It did concern me that perhaps the food would not be up to snuff, but I was wrong about that. I had the ceviche and also the pasta with clams and they were fresh and delicious, and even somewhat innovative. Specifically, the ceviche was served in a chalupa-like taco that is hard to fully describe, but it was truly sublime. Beats chasing a pieces of marinated fish around the plate with a chip! I enjoyed all this along with a cocktail and a wine flight, all for pretty reasonable prices, though not cheap. But hey, good food aint cheap and cheap food aint good, right? Wholly recommend this place. But lets keep this place our little secret.

Amazing view. Food is not bad, nothing special if you ask me, but not necessarily worth the drive. SERVICE SUCKS (and I honestly don’t care about service most of the time). Becky, the server, turned around to help other people TWICE in the middle of taking our orders. She also prioritized big groups and left my husband and me hanging (didn’t get a to go box and our check 15 mins after asking for them). I don’t remember the details, but last time we had issues with their service as well. Why do I come back? I couldn’t care less about this place but hubby likes their food.

Ok first timers here! First let me start by saying that Gigi is a GEM! Im sorry, she made sure we were straight from the time we sat down til the time we left!! Superior service! Ok the food. We ordered 2 entrees the Salmon Reuben Sandwich ... I know it sounds crazy but it was delicious!! And the Salmon Tortellini, I have to be honest it is the reason I gave 4 ⭐s it was Okay. 🤔 We of course enjoyed the Caesar Salad as well as the Chateau St. Michelle Resiling I forget the year. But 2012 is my favorite. Definitely not. Ok now the views! We had the indoor window seat overlooking the beautiful lake while enjoying the ducks and hummingbirds! This was the ambience we were seeking and it did not disappoint! Will visit Again. (P/S I missed the pic of the Salmon Tortellini!) LASTLY... Gigi YOU ROCK!! (Put her name on the board!) 😉

This was an outstanding experience for us. We were looking for a nice lunch after a 3 hour drive and got into a restaurant that has been there since 1946! Fresh seafood and a very nice tasting wine flight along with some veggies and salad made for a great lunch. They have a large pond with waterfowl in the property. You can eat out on the pond and stroll around it too! Great place that we found out by accident...

This is a nice restaurant on I-8 between La Mesa and El Cajon. It has a small lake with outdoor dining alongside a pleasant indoor dining area. Our family has always enjoyed going there for good seafood, but last week the food was rather pricy and unexceptional. The staff and service are still good and the atmosphere is great. Heres hoping they will improve and get back to the excellent place it used to be.

Been coming here since I was a kid and never a complaint. Its one of my go to spots to bring my dog. I love that they have a little play area for dogs in the back patio.The ambience is tranquil especially in the evening when the fountain is lit up with colors. Our most recent waitress Kathleen was so very sweet and kind and very attentive and brought our dog a doggy plate for $4 which had salmon and rice. We had the sourdough bowl with clam chowder and two fish tacos. So delicious and yummy! Will be coming back again.

Have been a patron of Anthonys Fish Grotto for over 20 years. Only able to visit a few times a year. I have only settled on one dish, because its so good! Love getting their Fish and Chips. Service was very pleasant and friendly. Very attentive to our table. They have moved from the pier next to the Maritime Museum, to this new establishment in La Mesa, but the food is the same! Love the décor as well! Can hardly wait to come back!

This is about as Nostalgic as it comes. This is a playbook right out of an Italian Grandmas recipe book. Its definitely a throwback and has that old school vibe. The food is excellent and the ambiance has that 60s - 70s decorum. It has been some years since I visited this place. As a matter of fact, cellphones were a thing of the future! (Lol). Definitely worth the trip. Its not a child place. Definitely you must be grown. Also, the seafood is about as fresh as fresh can be. Great water view.

The complimentary bread was terrible, severed cold with some odd orange based mayo sauce? And it was just a mini ciabatta bread, odd choice. The Caesar salad wasn’t any good, the lettuce was roughly chopped and tasted unwashed. The shrimp in my entree were all over cooked, the baked potato was cold and hardly melted the butter. The coleslaw….well the picture speaks for that. But it was literally not even mixed together? Just basic out of a bag cabbage mix and then a weird poppy seed sauce just poured on top.. not even mixed together.. Terrible to say the least. All the fish on my fiancé’s plate were over cooked as well. Really saddened by our experience here. Especially for their price point, I would expect better quality food. Also the cocktail, the blackberry mojito tasted like rubbing alcohol, way too strong. Service was also kinda weird, but the restaurant was fairly busy.

Everything is just ok...Except that they charge you 4% extra ( separate from tips) for the service just saying is for the minium wage salary ( is the same 16$ as everywhere) and complaining about the trash... We have been going to the Anthonys Fish Grotto in downtown San Diego for years. We were saddened when they closed that location since it is a favorite of ours whenever we visit San Diego. The Place brings back lots cf memories for me. My dad use to take me to the Anthonys by the Embarcadero when I was a kid. Back then Anthonys was famous for the Fish and Chips. They even had a side mini restaurant called Anthonys Fishette right next to the main Anthonys featuring the famous fish and chips . This was for people craving their famous fish and chips but didnt want to go through the whole restaurant thing. Of course I ordered the famous fish and chips but unfortunately its not the same recipe.They use to be golden fluffy crispy and tasty. Now they are soggy all overr the place pieces of fish . Veteran management how could you let that happen ? The one plate your known for ?I dont know if I got a bad batch but I doubt as the table next to me was also complaining about the exact same thing .So Ill probably try them again in a couple of months . We were there for my birthday last night. We have always gone to the previous location in San Diego. The Ambiance was not as nice. The decor looks like something at a restaurant inside of a mall. It was too cold to be seated outside perhaps it would have been better. The food is the most important thing! The food has not changed it was just as great as it has always been all of these years! The clam chowder is still the best ever. I had this Norwegian salmon with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes. For dessert I had the chocolate moose which was free for my birthday. Arrived and the front of the restaurant smelled a little like old water.Ordered an Old Fashioned to start. Drink took about 15 minutes to arrive. Once it did, the drink was pale in color with what looked like smashed up fruit in the bottom of the glass. Drink had no syrup or bitters added, was just smashed fruit with water and whiskey. The fish was previously frozen. It was thawed, battered, fried and then placed on the plate and left for a while to gather sweat. (See picture)I cannot speak for my companions on this trip, but my wife did not finish her meal and complained that their mashed potatoes were sour.For the prices this place charges, one would expect fresh fish and a bartender with knowledge of basic cocktails at least. Great time, great atmosphere and good people watching!Inside and outside are both enjoyable. Outside feels great by the water, with duck watching and beautiful trees all around.even at its sunniest, it still feels good outside.Inside is nice and chilly if thats your thing. The themed interior is a TREAT. These molded fish heads are all throughout the place, fake rock sides and more.We got the brussel sprouts, fish and chips, and fish and shrimp. All delicious! Just wasnt a fan of the veggies that are served as a side. Dont get that.

I started coming to Anthony’s about 30 years ago. The last 3 times I have really been disappointed by the service, declining quality/portions of food and the ridiculously long wait. Today I came here with 10 family members for my father in law’s birthday. It took just under 2 hours to get served our main course. We had to ask for plates for our appetizers. We had to ask for refills. Sad to say, I will never be coming again. There are just too many other options in San Diego. I don’t want to spend $30 per plate for Denny’s quality food. (The service is better at Denny’s.)

Summary: Great food, great staff, beautiful site, perfect for a group event with wide range of ages and tastes.Last month, we hosted a family reunion/graduation lunch at Anthonys. We needed a place comfortable for guests ranging in age from 3 to retirement age. We had to arrange this remotely and Im a novice at planning a group gathering. Valaree and Vicky made this extremely easy and pleasant. We reserved the cabana for lunch, and since we were only 18 people, we decided to order from the regular menu rather than the menu for a group menu.The day arrived: The tables were set up beautifully. They swiftly fulfilled my last minute request for a table and chairs to the side as an activity table for the kids. Our server Will was clearly an experienced pro; he checked-in with me before each stage to be sure it flowed at a comfortable pace for us.I was afraid the small kids may be bored- no way. The cabana is at the edge of the restaurants lake, but with a low-fence so we didnt need to worry about the pre-schoolers falling in while they fed the ducks. (They have baggies of duck food for a very small charge.) And the cabana area was big enough for them to walk around, but separated from the other diners.Oh and the food! The food at Anthonys was flavorful and well-prepared. (Ill be back next time Im in town.) Theres also a childrens menu, so the preschoolers were happy too.It was a great experience, even better than we had hoped for. Thank you, Anthonys!

Such an original place! Ocean theme is great.We sat outside and the ambiance is in full effect. Water and cool breezes. You can bring you pup and sit outside.The food is really done well. A little bit pricey, but isnt it all over priced these days.Seafood was fresh and tasty. Had a Cobb Salad this time. I love the Grilled crab and cheese sandwich. Very good.They offer a vegetarian menu if you ask.Service was good. Beverage refills were frequent. This is not fast food. Nice pace for entrées. Did not feel rushed.Always a great experience at Anthonys.

Really like being outside by the pond. People bring their doggos and the area is wonderfully calm. The food is good, maybe a bit overpriced😬Parking is usually available and free.The service is ok…staff is nice but not efficient and I needed to remind our server to replace dirty silverware.

Overall Anthony’s Fish Grotto is above average but nothing exciting.The fish is fresh and well prepared, but generally the dishes and flavors are what you’d expect for a staple seafood restaurant. If you want dependable and good seafood, come here; if you are looking for something a bit more exotic and creative, this may not be your place.The service was pleasant and responsive.

We sat in the bar late, had 2 Manhattans, made by Steve. Perfect. We love the ambience here. It’s so unique and nostalgic. We come here every time we visit family in La Mesa. Love the outdoor seating around the lake in daylight. The food is good. Try the sand dabs. Great service.

I have been looking for a new after work bar with food and I think this is it! Finally in east county an excellent bar with excellent food. The bartender, Joey, is on it. Everything you want quick no matter how busy. The food is what you expect from Anthony’s so no complaint there. The bar is on the smaller size which I like. Everyone very friendly. I usually order to go from here and have been very happy with that, but from now on I will stay and eat at the bar

The plate I bought was so bland and didn’t have much flavor. I’m not saying all their food is like that but that was my experience with the shrimp trio. The view was nice but that was about it. The service was terrible which made the experience meh. Definitely don’t recommend if you want to be ignored. I was dining alone so I wasn’t with a big group or anything.

The food here is unbelievable!!! When the staff says that the seafood is fresh they are not kidding! Besides the obvious with the menu, we have never experienced service like we did from the staff here. Theyre attitude and respect to the customer and to each other is something not seen much anymore. An absolute fabulous place.

The decor and ambiance of this establishment is perfectly lovely. The rock grotto feel. The beauty of the fountain and pond out back.But I’m not exaggerating when I say this was, hands down, the most unpalatable and unappealing seafood I’ve ever had in my life.The shark was absolutely tasteless. the calamari cold and greasy, bread basic and dry.We ordered the pasta with clams, and after nearly a half an hour, the waiter comes over to tell us they’re out of clams.I had never cared for Anthony’s downtown, but decided to give this a try anyhow. As it was recommended by so many. But, definitely will not be spending my money here again. Very disappointed.

Anthonys Fish Grotto is a lakefront neighborhood gem that combines Italian Cuisine with Seafood. For ambiance, sit lakefront with dog-friendly outdoor seating or sit along the window for a beautiful view of Anthonys water features mounted to the building and in the center of the lake. Anthonys menu has been perfected over many years and is both delicious and consistent. Anthonys has been a go-to restaurant for my family and I since I was an infant; for over 40 years now. I would be shocked if someone ate here and did not like the seafood.

This is my all time FAVORITE restaraunt!!!! My boyfriend mentioned he wanted to take me there for Valentines dinner & he did. There was a wait because of the holiday but it was not a long wait. It was worth the wait 100% just like always. Great food, great service, great atmosphere & great pricing. The staff all seemed to be happy and helpful.

If you enjoy forcing yourself to eat bland food this is the perfect place for you! we were planning to come here often after going in because the place is so cute and we enjoyed looking at the ducks, but none of that can make up for the “food” they serve. we ordered the artisanal salad appetizer and it includes beets but the beets were frozen? i wish i can list more but i would have to go on for almost forever. this place is like if you stole your kid’s school lunch and went to a lake/park to eat it.

Enjoy the wonderful view and always fantastic service, wait staff has been exemplary on a number of visits. Occasional just ok meals but in general pretty good food. Wishes would be for a little better washing machine for the flatware and different parking. Average a few meals a year there as it is a drive, but will definitely be back! Have to say it again, consistently one of the better places for friendly wait staff that makes dining there memorable.

The service is exceptional. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is also amazing. It has a true late 80s early 90s vibe, which I know isn’t intentional but I love it. You can tell people have been patrons here for years. It was super crowded on a Thursday night but we got seated right away (5:30pm). Chowder was really good-starter salad was nothing special but tasty to me. Crab cake was mushy and didn’t taste great. But the shrimp and salmon were super good and the mashed potatoes side was very yummy. Shrimp scampi was very good too, although it was in a pool of butter- some peoples jam but not mine. 4 stars for service, atmosphere, and food that fills you up. But minus one star because the food isn’t that great and it’s pretty pricey. Two entrees, a chowder, sprite, & beer was $93 with tip. Definitely will go back for atmosphere but not for food necessarily. Maybe we’ll order differently next time.

Given the prices, I did not feel they gave enough fish for the money. What was there was pretty good, baked potato was awesome, Bread was just okay, very little flavor. The coleslaw was really really good. Overall I think its overpriced for the amount of food they give, but the lake area is very nice.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! TERRIBLE management! This place has gone hill DRASTICALLY! Its such a shame too! Its not what it used to be! For what the prices are, I was RIPPED OFF! IF YOU LOVE GREASY SEAFOOD WITH SMALL PIECES OF of fish, mostly breaded, lousy service than this is your place! Management does absolutely nothing to accommodate customer, you will be made to pay for your food even if you dont like it! Totally unacceptable! Buyer BEWARE!
